The Evolution of Self-Help and What It Looks Like Today

A little bit of stress can be a good thing; it pressures you into performing at your very best at work, at the gym, and in life. But too much stress can lead to anxiety, lack of sleep, and general unhappiness. In this day and age, managing your stress levels is as easy as downloading an app, but it didn’t used to be that way. The self-help movement began with books on living a better life, but it’s still evolving today to address modern challenges and concerns.

The terms “self-help,” “self-care,” and “self-love” used to vary in their meanings, but today’s leaders in the field increasingly believe that their definitions blur together. Lori Harder is an expert in self-love and the author of A Tribe Called Bliss: Break Through Superficial Friendships, Create Real Connections, Reach Your Highest Potential($26) — and she believes that self-help’s new, all-encompassing meaning is a good one.

“Self-help today takes on so many different forms and that’s what I love,” she says. “It can be anything that challenges you to look at how you are showing up, acting, and reacting. It can be seeking out resistance in order to get stronger or it can be simply using your life and your relationships to see how much more loving you can be in the circumstances and relationships that already exist.”

While the definition of self-help in the 21st century remains ambiguous, Harder says that there’s been a key shift in self-help philosophies since the mid-1900s when the movement took root. The self-help of the past had to do with finding happiness, which is why it was called self-help; we tried to help ourselves be happier. Now, that phrase has morphed into the more appropriately named self-care — because, as Harder says, we have the opportunity to care for the happiness that we’ve found.

“I think it has changed from the past from trying to figure out what makes a good life and business, to now, what happens after the happiness comes,” she says. “That is how our happiness can lead to our ever-changing purpose, which can lead to impacting the planet for the highest good.”

The prevalence of social media in the lives of millennials has contributed to why the term “self-love” has been thrown into the mix; the idea of self-love has popped up to address the challenges of comparison, bullying, and popularity that are synonymous modern life — especially online.

“We live in a world that tells us we are never enough no matter what we are — and the only way to survive and thrive is to accept, love, forgive, and become a person who learns to see their own value and accept and release everything else,” she says. “It’s not what happens to us, but what matters is to learn how to tell ourselves an empowering story after the event occurs, and this takes a lot of self-work.”

No matter how you spin it, the modern era of “self” has culminated in what Harder calls “a focus on healing on your own,” meaning that we rely on inner strength to overcome our tribulations in life. However, Harder also says that no amount of self-help, self-care, or self-love is a complete substitute for the capacity we have to find our purpose in groups.

“Essentially, this vision will be groups of people agreeing to communicate openly and hold each other accountable to higher standards,” Harder says. “Otherwise, it would be too easy to just go back to how we were before [we read] the book or [attended] the events.”

In other words, inspirational Instagram accounts or books like Harder’s — while certainly helpful — aren’t enough to change our internal mindset. The irony of self-help, then, is the fact that we are so dependent on the presence of others in order for it to truly work.

1. Nail Reformation Fleur De Magnolia

Nail Reformation

Are you in your dainty girl era? Great, we are too! It's the perfect excuse to wear these pretty press-on nails from Nail Reformation! They feature the familiar French manicure design, but with pastel colors, florals, and cute pearls on each finger.

2. Colorful Arts & Crafts Nails

Sarah Torres/Dupe Photos

Remember when you used to draw abstract doodles in class? Take this as a sign to use your mini drawings as inspo for the easter nails you're thinking about wearing. They'll stand out no matter what you're wearing and may garner a few compliments when you're making your weekly Trader Joe's run!

3. BTArtbox Soft Gel French Press On Nails

Amazon

This easter nail idea is debunking the myth that French manicures are boring. They're everything but because you can have so much with different designs. Unlike our first pretty pastel pick, these nails feature slanted and complementary colors that give it a modernized look.

4. Artsy Abstract Nails

Jackie Dewar/Dupe Photos

Abstract nails continue to reign supreme for one reason: they're unforgettable and bring a smile to our face. This idea is perfect if spring makes you want to do as many quirky things as possible. Frolicking in a field of tulips for absolutely no zero reason at all? Make sure these nails graze as many of them as they can!

5. Juicy Fruit Nails

Alexis Charles/Dupe Photos

Do you get anxiety every time your nail tech asks you to pick a color during your appointment? Pick five bright shades that fit many of your moods. She might not be happy, but at least your nails will look pretty.

6. Matcha Green Nails

Lara Hayley/Dupe Photos

Are you obsessed with making matcha drinks like we are? Let your love for the green drink show with these pretty nails. They'll look great against your glass cup, making your roommates envious that they didn't consider this shade.

7. Nail Reformation Garden Of Pearls Press On Nails

Nail Reformation

Keep your love for green going, but go a few shades lighter with these pastel press-on nails. They're as dainty as Nail Reformation's Fleur De Magnolia nails, but they blend several designs together. From the class French manicure to metallic accents, you'll love watching the sun make them shimmer.

8. WICKED X KISS There's Joy

KISS

If you been watching Wicked all week, you'll love this collab between the movie and KISS. They feature the prettiest floral designs with cute little bees pollinating them. While we can't promise they'll make you get over your fear of the black and yellow cuties, we can all agree you won't be able to stop looking at your hands.

9. Olive & June Bandana Chrome Press On Nails

Olive & June

Instead of checkered print nails, take a walk on the wild side with Olive & June's bandana chrome nails. They're not as "girly" as our other easter nail idea picks, but you'll definitely have a great time wearing them the more you spend time in the sun.

10. Short And Sweet French Manicure

Brit + Co Courtesy of Bellacures

Dunkin'just dropped a new specialty donut flavor alongside their spring menu, and it’s already got fans in a doozy. Inspired by perhaps the most sugary dessert out there, cotton candy, it’s not hard to see the treat going downhill (AKA being way too sweet). Plenty of Dunkin’ fans are still skeptical about the new flavor – making this the most divisive donut drop in a hot minute.

Read on to learn more about Dunkin’s Cotton Candy donut and the best fan reactions to the new flavor!

Dunkin’

Dunkin’ describes their all-new Cotton Candy Specialty Donut as “asweet throwback for kids and kids at heart.” It’s a filled donut full of cotton candy-flavored buttercream that’s then topped with strawberry icing and blue sprinkles.

But is it really as “whimsical and delicious” as the chain claims? Dunkin’ fans on Reddit had a lot of thoughts.

Reddit

If you’re wondering about the true flavor, one person who tried it reported that it tasted like a combo of bubblegum and cotton candy ice cream. Another person liked that it was “very balanced.”

“Not a fan of cotton candy flavored stuff but this was pretty good or at least better than expected,” one customer reported on Reddit. “The doughnut wasn't overly sweet and I liked that the cotton candy flavor was all in the cream. I also liked how soft the dough was.”

“I really liked how the filling was more fluffy and airy compared to regular donut filling!” another person said. “The cotton candy flavor was quite subtle which I think was for the best lol.”

Reddit

While plenty of people were pleasantly surprised by the Cotton Candy Specialty Donut, others could not find the strength to stomach it.

“Not appetizing to me at all but it looks cute,” someone said.

“I actually think Dunkin's R&D is run by tweens,” another commented. “Cotton candy donut, how ridiculous.”

Dunkin'

This is a treat you just have to try for yourself. No matter what you think about the Cotton Candy Specialty Donut, you can also snag some other great items from Dunkin’ this spring, including the all-new Blueberry Sprinkle MUNCHKINS and Ham & Swiss Pretzel Sliders. They also launched an Arctic Cherry energy drink and brought the famed Dunkalatte for sippers to enjoy!

Beauty appointments are at the top of my self-care list, but you there's one question that's always sat in the back of my mind. Do I have bad habits that are annoying to my hairdresser or am I a "good" client? This could stem from being listening to retail horror storiesand fighting the urge to gasp in horror at customers' behavior.

No matter what it is, it's apparent hairdressers aren't a fan of everything you and I may do before, during, and after our appointments. Out of curiosity, I asked the following hairstylists about their biggest pet peeves:

Learn which bad habits you should stop doing if you want to stay in your hairdresser's good graces!

1. Coming To Your Appointment After Being At The Gym

Madison Kinsley/Dupe Photos

I'm thoroughly surprised that people do this because I know how sweaty I get after a workout. But Jorge's had clients who've done this and it's not a good look, according to her. "Yes your service begins with a wash, but seriously," she asks. I don't think you need a reminder, but you might want to take a shower after your gym or pilates session out of courtesy for your hairdresser!

2. Arriving Late To Your Appointment

Most hairdressers have have a grace period for clients because they understand things happen, but that's not your cue to take advantage of their kindness. For Durante, "being late is the primary issue." Want to know why? He says it's because this "backs up all the appointments and creates a domino effect of issues that can often be hard to catch up on."

3. Acting Like An Armchair Stylist

cottonbro studio/Pexels

Hair appointments should be collaborative, yes, but not to the point where your hairdresser feels like you're trying to do their job for them. Jorge says, "The most nerve-wrecking thing a client can do while they are in the chair is constantly second guess what the stylist is doing or changing their minds about their service. Clients need to trust their stylist and not back seat drive every snip."

If you're guilty of doing this, try to be mindful of how this makes your hairdresser feels. They're providing a service, but they're still human.

Jorge also says, "Sometimes, I just want to give the client the scissors and let them cut their own hair. J/K.."

Rene Terp/Pexels

It's something Durante doesn't care for either. "We always encourage our clients to give as many details as possible with how they want their hair to be cut, colored, and/or styles, but directing the service and telling the hairstylist exactly how to do their hair in step-by-step format is unnecessary when seeing a professional," he states.

Should you be afraid to talk to your hairdresser? Not at all, but it's unhelpful if you think you're more equipped to do your hair while sitting in their chair. "We appreciate a client's direction as it is their look, but critiquing and instructing us on how to reach the end goal is beyond frustrating. Quite frankly, we have spent years handling requests and know exactly how to achieve your desired look based on the tools we've gathered throughout the years," Durante adds.

5. Waiting To Share Your Dissatisfaction

Antoni Shkraba/Pexels

Another annoying behavior stems from something we've all done at least once. Durante says, "When completing a cut or color based on an inspiration photo, the client says they "wanted to go a different direction" - but only tells us once the service is completed."

At this stage in life, I realize the importance of communicating with my hairdresser throughout my appointment. People can't read minds so it's something to think about if you typically wait until your service is over to complain.

6. Covering Your Hair Once It's Been Styled

Melissa Romee/Dupe Photos

According to Jorge, it's annoying when "after receiving a hair cut and styling, the client wears a hat or covers their hair." I'm always excited after a hair appointment because it's a chance to enjoy and show off my new refreshed look, but I guess some people feel the need to "hide" their style.

Her other pet peeves? "Washing their hair with a cheap, sulfate shampoo that ruins their color. Going for a swim after a keratin treatment only to dry their hair afterwards and realize a giant frizz bomb where perfectly straight hair once was."

TV shows have the unique ability to capture the cultural pulse of their time, and sitcoms might just be the greatest example. They're packed with relevant humor and characters that are supposed to be relatable, so they quickly become staples in homes across the country.

However, as we continue to evolve as a society, so do our standards, and plenty of shows you might've watched as a kid or teen now just seem dated or even downright offensive in hindsight. Here are some classic sitcoms that, while once iconic, haven't aged well.

Scroll to see all the sitcoms that actually aged really badly...

CBS

1. How I Met Your Mother

It's natural to have flawed characters in TV series, but one How I Met Your Mother character in particular, Barney Stinson, is especially problematic. Portrayed by Neil Patrick Harris, Barney is known for being manipulative and casually misogynistic.

For instance, he has a "playbook" of pick-up lines, regularly lies to women just to sleep with them, and perpetuates toxic masculinity. Barney's behavior might've been able to snag some laughs back in the day, but his disrespectful actions wouldn't be so well-received by audiences in 2025.

Warner Bros. Television

2. Two and a Half Men

Two and a Half Men continues to air on TV and stream across platforms, but that doesn't mean its premise isn't controversial.

Charlie Sheen plays Charlie Harper, a man who routinely treats women as objects for his own pleasure and perpetuates harmful gender stereotypes. Not to mention, Charlie's behavior is showcased in front of his young nephew, Jake, who becomes privy to situations that are way too mature for a kid.

Sure, there is humor in the tension between Charlie and his brother, Alan. Nonetheless, the line between comedy and inappropriate content is definitely blurred.

ABC

3. Ugly Betty

Both the title and plot of Ugly Betty probably wouldn't hold up if it were released today. The show revolves around Betty Suarez, played by America Ferrera, who is a smart, ambitious, and kind-hearted young woman. However, since she wears glasses, has braces, and doesn't follow fashion trends, she's deemed "ugly" and deals with constant ridicule after landing a job at a fashion magazine.

It's undeniable that Ugly Betty is packed with both funny and heartfelt moments. Nonetheless, the way the show treats Betty's looks and reinforces harmful beauty standards feels super outdated in our more body-positive and inclusive era.

20th Century Fox Television

4. That 70's Show

When you think of That 70's Show, you might picture the classic bell-bottom-wearing friend group sitting around, surrounded by clouds of smoke. Compared to how the character Fes, played by Wilmer Valderrama, was treated, the underage drug use seems relatively tame.

As the "foreign exchange student," Fes is not only given a name that reduces him to being an outsider, but a lot of the humor surrounding his character also just relies on racist stereotypes. That 70's Show might've intended to be lighthearted, but it's tough to imagine a modern sitcom leaning on so many old tropes.

CBS

5. Everybody Loves Raymond

Despite being a funny character, Ray Barone, played by Ray Romano, reinforces problematic gender roles in Everybody Loves Raymond.

He comes off as a passive husband who typically sides with his mother over his wife, leaving his wife to shoulder much of the emotional labor and household chores. This old-fashioned family dynamic feels especially inappropriate today when modern sitcoms are trying to challenge these old stereotypes.

CBS

6. The Big Bang Theory

The initial appeal of The Big Bang Theory centered around nerd culture being quirky and odd, but today, this kind of "otherness" just isn't considered funny anymore.

Each character also has their own specific issues, with Raj's selective mutism being played for laughs, Penny embodying the "dumb blonde" stereotype, and Sheldon's behavior that's exaggerated for comedic effect. In 2025, this sitcom seems repetitive and shallow since it leans too heavily on stereotypes.

Touchstone Television

7. Home Improvement

When it comes to Home Improvement, this show pushed a traditional narrative where men are defined by their roles as the breadwinners and having handyman skills; meanwhile, a woman's value is tied to her appearance and household duties.

Tim Taylor, played by Tim Allen, is a one-dimensional character whose storyline almost totally revolves around his role as the host of "Tool Time," a fictional TV show. Not to mention, there's the "Tool Time girl," a woman whose sole purpose is to stand and look attractive while introducing Tim and his co-host. The lack of depth and outdated gender tropes make Home Improvement a tough watch today.

CBS

8. According to Jim

On a similar note, the show According to Jim features a father, played by Jim Belushi, who embodies traditional gender roles. His behavior doesn't fit the mold of the typical sitcom dad, though, since Jim is always lying to his wife and sister, interrupting others, and acting just plain rude.

In hindsight, Jim's character perpetuates misogyny and being overly macho, something that probably wouldn't fly if made today.

The 'blush-draping' makeup trend is taking the internet by storm, and it's easy to see why. It creates a sculpted, lifted look with minimal effort, highlighting your best features and giving you a soft, natural glow. While typical blush application focuses on the apples of the cheeks, blush draping involves applying it in an upward motion to the temples, blending it toward the forehead, and even in the jaw area. It creates a high-cheekbone effect, adding warmth and a sun-kissed element that feels natural and not overdone. Convinced? We've curated a list of our favorite products to nail the look, from jelly blushes and dewy lip-stains to foundations that provide the perfect base.
