Know Your Worth: The Secrets To A Thriving Music Career

illustration of woman in music industry

In our Take 5 series, sponsored by Verizon, we ask women in business about unexpected challenges, their inspirations, recent wins, and how the free Verizon Small Business Digital Ready Program has helped propel their business forward. Here, we meet La Wuandia, singer, songwriter, and promoter behind the Chicago-based global entertainment company Agape Vibes.

La Wuandia of Agape Vibes

What's the most unexpected business challenge you've faced and how did you overcome it?

When I began in the late ‘90s, it was not a surprise that financial institutions would not lend to unconventional or non-traditional businesses like a performance company and even further to a person of color, and even to a female person of color. That was one of the initial road bumps. Then, when the pandemic hit, I had to figure out how to still perform for profit. The audio isn’t great on Zoom, so I started reaching out to other groups and we started performing outdoors, and traveling around the country. They were practically giving hotel rooms away!

What’s a recent small win for you and your business?

Staying Alive. Staying Alive. [laughs] During the pandemic, so many doors closed. But I was able to support my band members who did not have nine-to-fives to fall back on. Now, whenever I do have a performance, if they have something booked, they'll find a sub for that book and come and perform with me. You got to love that integrity.

Who is a woman in business that you look up to and why?

I had the opportunity to meet [a late Supreme Court Justice]. I was a flight attendant, and when she was leaving the plane, she told me she had never experienced a flight with my service ever before. Of course, I was floating. For someone of that caliber to stop and actually recognize and acknowledge my services is truly amazing. I love her story, how she was able to balance work and life and family, then to be able to go as far as the Supreme Court. That was amazing to me.

What's a book, podcast, or resource that has made an impact on you as an entrepreneur?

I love motivational speaker Jim Rohn’s practical applications and how he helps an individual to recognize that a lot of what we are hoping to obtain is already within us, it's a matter of focus. It's a matter of keeping our thought processes positive and moving forward. And also to keep our circle with positive like-minded individuals.

How has the free Verizon Small Business program helped propel your business forward?

The one beautiful thing that I love that Verizon did was to analyze my website [via 1:1 coaching]. I started to learn how my website was being utilized in terms of the traffic and how I can make better use of it. Their digital platform also offered peer networking, peer coaching, mentoring, and it was not a long drawn-out type of programming or training. It was to the point, and then offered a way to get more information. Finally, what I learned from the Verizon program is how to pay myself and how to assess my worth. I was paying myself whatever was leftover, but I realized that was wrong. I needed to give myself a salary.

From announcing her tenth album Midnights during an acceptance speech to breaking ticket-selling records to gearing up for her feature film directorial debut, Taylor Swift continues to surprise us. And that includes her Eras Tour, which kicked off in Glendale, Arizona on March 17.

At one of her Texas shows, she surprised the audience by swapping a song on the setlist for something she had never performed live. "You think you can just go online, you think you can just scroll and know the setlist, you think you can just come prepared," she said onstage. "Let it be said about the Eras Tour: we're tricksy."

In addition to her self-proclaimed "setlist hi-jinx," every night of the tour will see two surprise songs. That is, until Taylor started doing mash-ups, which means the surprise song segment can have as many songs as she wants! She did something totally new in Sydney, Australia and played mash-ups every single night.

All in all, even if your favorite song didn't make the original setlist, you might still get to hear it (even if you're streaming the concert on TikTok). While we wait for The Tortured Poets Department — and maybe Reputation (Taylor's Version) — here's everything she's played on the tour.

Does anyone sing Taylor Swift's Eras Tour surprise songs with her?

Image via Mike Coppola/Getty Images for iHeartRadio

Taylor Swift will occasionally bring out her opener to sing the surprise songs with her, like she did with Sabrina Carpenter in Sydney, Australia! After crazy weather preventer Sabrina from performing her set at the beginning of the concert, Taylor brought her out for a medley of "White Horse" from Fearless (Taylor's Version) and "Coney Island" from Evermore.

How does Taylor Swift choose surprise songs?

Image via Chloe Williams/Brit + Co

It seems that Taylor Swift's surprise song choices are somewhat last minute and based on what she wants to play, but we're thinking that two of her songs from Houston are more than meets the eye — er, more than meets the ear?

Twitter users recently brought up Speak Now (Taylor's Version) when images of Taylor filming in Liverpool went viral. The other two people in the photos appear to be Joey King and Taylor Lautner, who both played a role in the original Speak Now: Joey King was featured in the "Mean" music video and Taylor Lautner is the subject of

And we're talking about Speak Now (Taylor's Version) again after the April 22 concert because of her surprise songs. After all, "A Place In This World" (which is featured in Joey King's Ramona and Beezus) and "Today Was A Fairytale" (which is a part of Taylor Swift and Taylor Lautner's Valentine's Day) feels very intentional. Turns out, we were right because she brought Joey and Taylor onstage during the Speak Now (Taylor's Version) launch party to premiere the music video!

In addition to playing requests from her openers during the surprise song segment, Taylor seems to choose songs based on her celebrity attendees. The Summer I Turned Pretty's Jenny Han and Lola Tung attended the May 27 show, where Taylor played "False God," which was featured in season one.

And during her last performance in LA, Taylor Swift chose "New Romantics" from 1989 and "New Year's Day" from reputation. This is very telling because for one, "New Romantics" was the only song from 1989 that she hadn't sung yet, and it came right after the 1989 (Taylor's Version) announcement! And based on this frame from the "Karma" music video, we might be getting reputation TV after 1989 TV. So "New Year's Day" was the perfect follow-up!

November 19 and 20, at the end of Taylor Swift's time in Rio de Janeiro, she played two songs from Reputation: "Dancing With Our Hands Tied" and "So It Goes..." (both of which are two of my all-time favorite Taylor songs and are very under-appreciated). This leaves "I Did Something Bad" as the final Reputation surprise song, and Swifties are convinced we'll get the announcement before the end of November. Fans also pointed out both "Me!" and "So It Goes..." feature a 1,2,3 countdown in the lyrics — and there are only three shows left before Taylor takes another break. It's the perfect time for an announcement if you ask me!

After Christmas parties, trips to Vegas, and engagement rumors, I thought Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's relationship couldn't get any better. But clearly I was wrong because Taylor basically broke the internet this weekend by bringing Travis onstage during one of her London Eras Tour concerts!

@ameliamanca TRAVIS KELCE ON THE STAGE OF THE ERAS TOUR #londontheerastour#tstheerastour#traviskelce#taylorswift#theerastour♬ suono originale - ameliamanca

After "The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived," Travis Kelce came onstage during "I Can Do It With A Broken Heart." Along with some of Taylor Swift's backup dancers, he appeared in a tux and a top hat to help Taylor "get ready" to perform for an audience.

Pretending to dress Taylor up, as well as the choreography making her look like a doll or a puppet, perfectly match up with lyrics like "They said, 'Babe, you gotta fake it 'til you make it' and I did" and "I was grinning like I'm winning, I was hitting my marks // 'Cause I can do it with a broken heart." But it looks like thanks to Travis, Taylor doesn't have to perform with a broken heart anymore!

Gareth Cattermole/Getty Images

Even though this is Travis Kelce's first time onstage at the Eras Tour, this isn't his first time attending the tour. He showed up to some of her Singapore shows in 2023, as well as the Australia leg of the tour. And now, some fans think Travis should return the favor and welcome Taylor onto the football field!

"i think it’s only fair that the chiefs reciprocate this energy and put taylor in for a drive," one X user jokes.

"@Chiefs if you're ever up by a bunch let her kick a field goal or [something]," another agrees.

I think it would be amazing to see Taylor on the football field, especially after a season of seeing her in a box seat! I mean, the MLB begins their games with a Celeb First Pitch, it seems only fair the NFL would follow suit ;).

What was your reaction when you saw Travis Kelce onstage at the Eras Tour? I couldn't believe it! Read up on why we're excited that We Finally Have New Taylor Swift Songs About Travis Kelce for more TayVis news!

Wanna look cute and feel comfy while exploring your fun vacation destinations this summer? Look no further than espadrille mary janes, a shoe I could — and have — walk miles in all summer long. Espadrilles are a notorious favorite across Italy and Spain, considered a Ventian classic slipper that have actually been worn for hundreds of years in Italy. And if I didn't already love these euro-classics before, now espadrilles come in an adorable mary jane style that I'm so obsessed with! So keep reading to see all of our favorite mary jane espadrilles that you can shop right now!
