Why it’s My Husband That I Celebrate on Father’s Day

I’m not someone who can get by on just a few hours of sleep — I never have been. At middle school slumber parties, I’d stay up until 2 am downing endless cans of Pepsi and talking about the Backstreet Boys, then take the entire weekend to recover from the lack of sleep (and, let’s be honest, all that sugar). So it came as no surprise that when I had kids of my own, I struggled with the lack of sleep: From waking at night to breastfeed or dealing with toddler nightmares at 3 am, nighttime interruptions have always thrown me off physically and emotionally. Yet, while both my young sons are early risers, often waking with the sunrise, I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve had to get up with them.

I have my husband, Tim, to thank for that — and dozens of other things, which is why I take time to celebrate him every year on Father’s Day. While watching my Tim parent our sons with joy and presence is healing in itself, I appreciate his patient, steadfast contributions in parenting our sons because it gives me the space I need to parent myself.

I wouldn’t call my childhood traumatic — my parents did the best they could with what they had, like the rest of us do —but I definitely experienced some traumatic moments. My mom struggled with physical and mental illness and addiction to prescription painkillers, and my dad traveled for work probably 80 percent of the time to provide for our family, since my mom couldn’t keep a job. The combination of a very sick mom and very busy dad left me in a care-taking role, which later on in life resulted in panic attacks and severe anxiety. I’m almost 30, and I still deal with anxiety today — but I’m working hard in therapy to face my triggers so they don’t control my life like they used to.

Last winter, for example, I had more bad days than good ones. Days when I plummeted to a frightening low and had to call Tim to come home early from work so he could take over kid duty. Days when I slept until nearly lunchtime because getting out of bed to face reality was too scary. Days when the need to take care of myself felt more pressing than playing with my boys, so I plopped them in front of the TV and hoped they wouldn’t remember when they were my age.

These days throw me into a shame spiral where I begin to believe my lapses in mental health will traumatize my kids, or that because I’m absent in some ways, I’m just like my mom. But my therapist has helped me realized that I’m not. Here’s the difference: My mom didn’t have support and resources she needed to face her own childhood trauma head-on. She came to a point where relying on prescription painkillers — and then abusing them — felt like the best way to manage her emotional pain. While I’m not perfect — I’ve had my share of struggles when it comes to self-medicating —support can make a big difference in the healing journey. I’m privileged to have a husband who takes this seriously and makes room for me to face my own pain. Tim not only participates in parenting our kids, but often takes the lead so I can do the work I need to do to become healthy and whole, no matter how long it takes, and no matter how many flare-ups I have along the way.

Lately, while I feel more emotionally stable than I have in a while, anxiety flare-ups pop up here and there. Every Thursday, when my kids are at daycare, I see a therapist who helps me process traumatic memories from my childhood. The therapy session itself isn’t too difficult; I usually make it through without tears or anxiety. But the days after the appointment are always hard, like my body is remembering and trying to metabolize pain I faced as a kid.

Like those childhood sleepovers, it often takes me the entire weekend to recover physically and emotionally from resurfacing that trauma. I go to bed early and sleep in late those days, while Tim pinch hits for me and takes the kids to the park or the library. When they go to bed at night, he’ll skip out on the basketball game he wants to watch and helps me talk through what I’m feeling and asks me what I need to feel safe and happy. My husband is present and attentive to my needs, and that’s one reason why he’s worth celebrating on Father’s Day, and every day.

I celebrate my husband on Father’s Day not because I don’t love or respect my own dad. (Don’t worry; I send him a card, too.) I celebrate my husband on Father’s day not because I depend on him to take care of me. I celebrate my husband on Father’s Day — and truthfully, every other day — because his love and patience give me space to take care of myself. And that’s profoundly healing.

One funny detail about Ryan Reynolds' kids that I love is when he mentioned the girls finally realized Taylor Swift was a popstar. "I think what's most exciting for them is that for the longest time they just thought Taylor's just like an aunt, like a friend of Mommy and Daddy that's very, very close, almost family," he tellsThe Jess Cagle Show. "And then they went to a concert one day and were like, 'Ohhhhh, this isn't a hobby.'"

For Super Bowl Sunday in 2024, Blake Lively joined Taylor Swift to support beau (and KC Chiefs tight end) Travis Kelce. "Last week I left my kids for the first time ever," she says on Instagram. "I took pictures upside down and had no clue. I treated a friendship bracelet like a Flat Stanley for my husband like I didn’t realize it wasn’t ‘07. I borrowed more jewelry than the skeleton in the Pirates of the Caribbean ride. And I went clubbing. Now I know what my episode of TheTwilight Zone would look like."

At the end of September, Ryan Reynolds revealed how different parenting seems to be now than when he was a kid. "Parents today are so different. We're so soft," he said at HubSpot’s INBOUND tech conference (via People). "I don't yell. I grew up with like — it was nuts, it was an improvised militia.”

“Now it's like, I can go look at all my resources for parenting and remind myself how to be perfectly compassionate,” he continued. "Something I love about [conflict resolution], and I know this is not very fancy, but what I love about it is that you can meet somebody where they are, and you don't have to be right or wrong...You can disagree and still connect."

Blake Lively recently joined an episode of her Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants' costar Amber Tamblyn's Further Adoand revealed the one unbreakable rule she made with Ryan Reynolds.

“When Ryan and I got together, we made a rule not to work at the same time,” she says. “So that we could always prioritize our personal life...That takes working really hard when we're not. Just like financial planning and sustaining that; it takes balance.”

In a conversation with Hugh Jackman ahead of Deadpool & Wolverine, Ryan Reynolds opened up about how his family has helped his anxiety. "I think it makes it better because your focus is less on yourself and more on your kids," he says (via People). "I love that I've had anxiety because when I see my kids experiencing some of that, which is probably genetic, I know how to address it in a way that is compassionate, that actually allows them to feel seen. I know that I can't just fix it. And I can communicate all that stuff to them and with them. I'm always grateful for it."

Per People, Ryan Reynolds has also made it clear he and Blake are wholly invested in the kids' daily lives. The doting husband and father enjoys the moments of "walking them to school and walking them back" as it deepens their bond. More than anything, Ryan and Blake's main goal is to make sure they teach their kids how to be introspective with Ryan saying "the thing we sort of hang our hat on the most is self-awareness with our kids."

However, that doesn't mean Blake and Ryan don't absolutely love being parents. "We're very excited [and] we wouldn't do this four times if we didn't love it," he says in an interview with CNBC's Power Lunch. "Everybody's doing great. Everybody's actually doing fantastic. I think if we hadn't figured it out by now, I think we'd be in deep, deep trouble."

"It's a zoo over here," he jokes. "This is my office here, this is where I'll probably — to be honest, I'll probably spend the rest of my life in here."

We love how much energy Ryan and Blake are pouring into their kids. It's always beautiful when parents are able to be present with their kids and teach them how to be present with themselves. Ryan Reynolds has also mentioned how having daughters "has been such a ride." Since he comes from a family of all boys, having daughters is something that was beyond his wildest dreams! “I love being a girl dad,” Ryan tells Access in 2020. “I have three daughters, which I never in a million years would imagine.”

He mentioned his newest child in June of 2023, when he announced his new series Bedtime Stories. "The idea for a show made to help everyone fall asleep was born the same day as my fourth child," he says on Instagram.

The Deadpool actor also recently offered some parenting advice on Amanda Hirsch’s hit podcastNot Skinny But Not Fat. "Embrace the chaos,” he tells Hirsch. "[Blake] always says, ‘They're all under our roof right now. The whole family's under our roof right now. We have them all.’ And that is a fleeting thing. Not an infinite resource, you know?”

While Reynolds understands firsthand how overwhelming parenting can feel, he also doesn't wish away this time with four young kids: “Just say, ‘Think about what you would give in 40 years or 30 years to come back and enjoy this one moment.’"

Blake Lively opened up about how Ryan Reynolds and she monitor screen safety for their kids, which is definitely something top-of-mind in 2024. “This is not an ad. I get nothing out of this. I just love @tappityapp,” she said of the STEM-focused educational app. “It’s engaging, informative, fun and they care about safety."

She also jokes that she's learning new things right along with her kids! But, no matter how educational or fun an app is, Blake Lively also emphasizes the importance of engaging with her kids' devices: "I’m always triple checking any kids app constantly for safety because that’s my responsibility not an app’s, but I do LOVE this one.”

Despite its fun and funny moments, the actress has admitted being a mom is hard, but she did it with her signature dry sense of humor. “BettyBooze at your service," she wrote in an Instagram Story announcing the new brand. "These are recipes I’ve been making for loved ones for years. But I have 4 kids now. And I’m tired. So here they are. In a can."

However, Blake Lively absolutely loves motherhood, and says in a 2022 interview with Forbes that having children has made her feel more comfortable in her own skin. "Once I had children, that just became even more profound because my time was even more precious, but also I think having children for me made me feel so much more in my skin," she says. "I never felt more myself or at ease in my own body or more confident — not to say that there aren't a bevy of insecurities coming at me a million times a day, but I just feel incredibly settled."

Speaking with People in 2021, Lively also explains how important it is that her children see her accomplish things outside the home. "I want to be as present of a mother as humanly possible and I want them to feel my presence, but I also think the best way to be the best mother is to show them that you can have a life and have a passion and have an identity outside of just being a mother," Lively says.

While she acknowledges that motherhood is all-encompassing, and it looks different for everyone, she knows that having your own identity is very important. "Teaching them that they can maintain themselves and that everything is possible [is crucial]," she adds.

Timothée Chalamet recently revealed that while he originally wanted to approach A Complete Unknown by taking direct inspiration from Bob Dylan, he quickly changed his tone...so to speak. "Somebody once said to me, you can't make a movie about a painter because it's not interesting to watch paint dry," he says in People's exclusive video. "Bob has that element because he's not one of these forward-facing musicians."

While Timmy saw Natalie Portman a sequence in Jackie "step-for-step exactly what Jackie did," and paid attention to "all this stuff that I saw my good friend Austin Butler crush it with on Elvis," he quickly realized "I gotta do none of this because this is not my style."

"Bob did not have a vocal coach," he continues. "He had two bottles of red wine and four packs of cigarettes. There's no way to impersonate that." One of my favorite things about biopics is seeing how a well-known actor portrays a recognizable figure. And you can see Timothée Chalamet's interpretation of Bob Dylan in theaters December 25!

We got a look at Monica Barbaro as singer-songwriter Joan Baez, who was one of the first major artists in the 1960s to record Bob Dylan's music!

I was super impressed to learn Timothée showed up and sang live for the film. "It was important for me to play and sing on set because it was in the spirit of the movie to do it live," he says in a video from People. "Many of the artists through American pop culture that had the balls to turn their back on what was expected of them, that moment started with Bob. His words are relevant; 'Times They are A Changing' ' is relevant, 'Blowin' in the Wind' is relevant."

Timothée Chalamet's Bob Dylan movie is called A Complete Unknown. The movie filmed around New York City in the spring of 2024, and James Mangold is serving as director (you might recognize his name from Logan, Girl, Interrupted, and Walk the Line). The movie will cover the period during the 1960s when Bob Dylan shifted from folk to rock'n'roll, changing the face of pop culture (and culture in general, TBH), forever.

"When that movie finally comes out, people are going to be shocked because you're going to think you're hearing Bob Dylan sing," vocal coach Eric Vetro tells PEOPLE. "[Timothée Chalamet] just has this uncanny ability to not impersonate, but really breathe life into it. He's embodying Bob Dylan and what he was like at that age."

Milo Ventimiglia Is A "Sweet And Attentive" Father-To-Be, And Duh!!!

Norman Mailer, I'm pregnant! This might be a memorable line from an equally memorable Gilmore Girls episode, but it's now also a reality for one of the show's stars because Milo Ventimiglia is expecting his first child! The actor married model and entrepreneur Jarah Mariano in the fall of 2023 at a tiny, private ceremony (a move that was very Jess Mariano of him), and on September 29, Jarah announced she's pregnant!
