My Smartphone Habit Meant Nearly Missing My Kids’ Childhood

It started when I was breastfeeding my first baby. I spent hours nursing in the static quiet of his little bedroom, and staring at the grinning octopi and seahorses (#nauticalnursery) on his walls certainly didn’t engage my intellectual capabilities. Though I’d long been a devotee of text messaging, my missives to friends and family took on a more insistent — and rapid-fire — tone. And when it was four in the morning and I needed to stay awake on the rocking chair, my text notifications weren’t exactly hopping. So I took to scrolling social media to keep my eyes open.

Before I knew it, I was one of those people. You know the ones: phone in hand, perpetually distracted, the glow of their smartphone reflecting off their eyeballs like a doomed sci-fi character. As my newborn became an infant and then a toddler, his physical needs for me grew. At the same time, my desire to feel like I was connecting to the world that was still happening without me grew from a whisper to a roar. It didn’t matter that I was going for days on end without muttering a compound sentence. I was still getting parenting advice, relationship tips, the latest news, and a heaping helping of whatever Kim Kardashian was wearing. It was all in the palm of my hand.

What’s more, I was cultivating my career. Since I’d chosen to give up my office job to be my child’s primary caretaker, I had felt at first like my career was stalled for the foreseeable future. But with the bevy of self-promotional opportunities available online (and our ever-diminishing family checking account, natch), I reevaluated that assumption. Like many mothers, I felt myself having a creative renaissance that was born out of — well, giving birth. This flush of fresh inspiration translated into writing gigs and freelance editing opportunities. The more I was checking my email, building relationships on Twitter, and evaluating trends for story ideas, the more the opportunities seemed to multiply. By my kid’s third birthday, I didn’t feel like I fit the definition of a stay-at-home mother at all. I was home, and I was a mother, but I felt like I was always at work.

Until my son became more verbal, it didn’t even occur to me that I could be damaging him with my smartphone habits. I was modeling how to chase dreams! I was a strong woman leaning in! Then one day I noticed how often during a typical day my child had to ask me to look up at him. My heart sank when it hit me that he could have been trying to communicate in other ways while I had been pitching stories to online venues (or, let’s be honest, lost in a Wikipedia abyss of former Nickelodeon child stars). By this time, my second child had already been born, and he was far less patient than my first. He’d taken to just slapping my phone from my grip.

That’s when I found out about the clinical studies being done about what’s being called “technoference.” Children whose parents are checking in with their phones often during childcare are more prone to behavioral outbursts, according to a study published in Child Development journal. And nearly half of parents report having digital interruptions disrupt the time they spend with their children at least three separate times per day.

Research also tells us that women are more likely to be addicted to their smartphones, and that women tend to see smartphone use as more problematic than male caretakers. Early motherhood is a time when women are especially susceptible to anxiety and depression, which has them reaching for their phones to make a connection with the outside world. Ironically, we’re now understanding that smartphones may very well be closely connected to anxiety and depression, possibly making them worse.

We spend a lot of time talking about what it means to “be present” and “in the moment,” especially as mothers fighting societal pressures and sensory overload. One thing that women tend to shy away from addressing is how hard it is to fight distractions, digital and otherwise, while we’re at home. The mundane and physically exhausting acts of motherhood can wear down even the most screen-free vigilante.

Camaron Brooks is a blogger, author, and mother of three who worked as a television reporter before choosing to stay home with her children. Although her primary occupation changed, her smartphone reliance initially didn’t. Brooks was still tracking the news and using her phone to stay connected with the world she had left behind… until she started doing research of her own into how maternal lack of engagement can influence child development.

Now she’s striving to be more intentional. “I try to ask myself what the feeling is that I’m trying to escape when I look at my phone. Some of the time, it’s boredom,” Brooks admits. “But I want to be available to my kids… their behavior is connected to my phone behavior.”

Part of the problem can be solved by reconsidering the way we see community. During my late-night text binges and midnight Twitter scrolls, I was desperate to feel like I wasn’t the only person in the world that couldn’t seem to nail sleep training. Educational resources, tried-and-true advice, and the physical presence of other mothers in my life diminished that craving when I learned how to find them. Making time to go outside and actually be with other mothers of young children provides a level of accountability that’s sometimes missing during long hours spent behind closed doors. “The way that motherhood is set up for us, there’s so much pressure to be present all the time. In the past, we didn’t have to think about ways to be present — we just were present,” Brooks observes. And we can still achieve that level of “present” by simply focusing on our IRL connections for a couple of hours.

Trying to envision how I appear through my children’s eyes when I’m on my phone all day (think: strung out on useless information and visibly ignoring their appeals for my attention) was a quick cue to delete Clash of Clans already. But avoiding the beckoning glow of my device is probably never going to be easy for me. Reading angry comments on websites (no one should do this; why did I?) and posting on forums to pass the time is just never going to beat paying attention to what my super weird, incredibly intelligent, maddeningly intuitive offspring is telling me about. Instead of asking me what I’m doing on my phone (alas, a question to which I often had absolutely no answer), my son is asking me to play with him more often. Because I’m more fun now.

Engaging in a group-text rant or a couple of midday email exchanges is still essential to my sanity, but I’ve worked hard to cut back on the apps and newsfeeds that were stealing the precious few moments I have to soak up my kids while they’re little. Don’t get me wrong, it felt like work — and I had to remind myself why I was doing it every step of the way. As with anything else, sacrificing a momentary impulse for a long-term goal, when it comes to my kids, will always be worth shutting off my WiFi for an hour or two. As I struggle to keep my eyes open while I hold one kid’s hand and rock back and forth with another child in my arms, I’m grateful that my hands are free. I think, “Remember this.” Remember this. They’re going to.

In a conversation with Hugh Jackman ahead of Deadpool & Wolverine, Ryan Reynolds opened up about how his family has helped his anxiety. "I think it makes it better because your focus is less on yourself and more on your kids," he says (via People). "I love that I've had anxiety because when I see my kids experiencing some of that, which is probably genetic, I know how to address it in a way that is compassionate, that actually allows them to feel seen. I know that I can't just fix it. And I can communicate all that stuff to them and with them. I'm always grateful for it."

Per People, Ryan Reynolds has also made it clear he and Blake are wholly invested in the kids' daily lives. The doting husband and father enjoys the moments of "walking them to school and walking them back" as it deepens their bond. More than anything, Ryan and Blake's main goal is to make sure they teach their kids how to be introspective with Ryan saying "the thing we sort of hang our hat on the most is self-awareness with our kids."

However, that doesn't mean Blake and Ryan don't absolutely love being parents. "We're very excited [and] we wouldn't do this four times if we didn't love it," he says in an interview with CNBC's Power Lunch. "Everybody's doing great. Everybody's actually doing fantastic. I think if we hadn't figured it out by now, I think we'd be in deep, deep trouble."

"It's a zoo over here," he jokes. "This is my office here, this is where I'll probably — to be honest, I'll probably spend the rest of my life in here."

We love how much energy Ryan and Blake are pouring into their kids. It's always beautiful when parents are able to be present with their kids and teach them how to be present with themselves. Ryan Reynolds has also mentioned how having daughters "has been such a ride." Since he comes from a family of all boys, having daughters is something that was beyond his wildest dreams! “I love being a girl dad,” Ryan tells Access in 2020. “I have three daughters, which I never in a million years would imagine.”

He mentioned his newest child in June of 2023, when he announced his new series Bedtime Stories. "The idea for a show made to help everyone fall asleep was born the same day as my fourth child," he says on Instagram.

The Deadpool actor also recently offered some parenting advice on Amanda Hirsch’s hit podcastNot Skinny But Not Fat. "Embrace the chaos,” he tells Hirsch. "[Blake] always says, ‘They're all under our roof right now. The whole family's under our roof right now. We have them all.’ And that is a fleeting thing. Not an infinite resource, you know?”

While Reynolds understands firsthand how overwhelming parenting can feel, he also doesn't wish away this time with four young kids: “Just say, ‘Think about what you would give in 40 years or 30 years to come back and enjoy this one moment.’"

Blake Lively opened up about how Ryan Reynolds and she monitor screen safety for their kids, which is definitely something top-of-mind in 2024. “This is not an ad. I get nothing out of this. I just love @tappityapp,” she said of the STEM-focused educational app. “It’s engaging, informative, fun and they care about safety."

She also jokes that she's learning new things right along with her kids! But, no matter how educational or fun an app is, Blake Lively also emphasizes the importance of engaging with her kids' devices: "I’m always triple checking any kids app constantly for safety because that’s my responsibility not an app’s, but I do LOVE this one.”

Despite its fun and funny moments, the actress has admitted being a mom is hard, but she did it with her signature dry sense of humor. “BettyBooze at your service," she wrote in an Instagram Story announcing the new brand. "These are recipes I’ve been making for loved ones for years. But I have 4 kids now. And I’m tired. So here they are. In a can."

However, Blake Lively absolutely loves motherhood, and says in a 2022 interview with Forbes that having children has made her feel more comfortable in her own skin. "Once I had children, that just became even more profound because my time was even more precious, but also I think having children for me made me feel so much more in my skin," she says. "I never felt more myself or at ease in my own body or more confident — not to say that there aren't a bevy of insecurities coming at me a million times a day, but I just feel incredibly settled."

Speaking with People in 2021, Lively also explains how important it is that her children see her accomplish things outside the home. "I want to be as present of a mother as humanly possible and I want them to feel my presence, but I also think the best way to be the best mother is to show them that you can have a life and have a passion and have an identity outside of just being a mother," Lively says.

While she acknowledges that motherhood is all-encompassing, and it looks different for everyone, she knows that having your own identity is very important. "Teaching them that they can maintain themselves and that everything is possible [is crucial]," she adds.

From Kamala Harris-inspired bobs to silky Lindsay Lohan-esque tresses, the season of the silk press (or straighter hairstyles) is officially here! It's been fun watching watching TikTok videos of women going to the salon to get their hair straightened, but it made me ask myself if people truly know how to maintain this style at home. It's one thing to watch a licensed hairstylist work their magic, but the upkeep may not be as straightforward for some people!

Luckily, celebrity hairstylists, Takisha Sturdivant-Drew and Natalie Lamorena, are here to answer all my burning questions. Sturdivant-Drew has over 20 years of experience working in the film and commercial industry, styling clients such as Kerry Washington, Lucy Liu, and Ashley Graham. She also worked on TV series like Suits and the Oscar-nominated film Ray. Lamorena owns Polished Pub Hair & Nail Bar— not to mention she invented the viral "Headicure" service for clients who love the idea of getting a manicure while receiving the best blowout of their lives. And with all that experience, the two of them have plenty to say about silk presses.

How do you know when to straighten your hair at home or go to the salon?

Desperate times call for desperate measures when you're due for a hair appointment and can't book one. I'm sure all of us have turned into an armchair hairstylist by giving ourselves a trim, quick haircut, or dye job. You've probably even watched a few tutorials about how to give yourself a homemade silk press or blowout. I know I've recently purchased a few things to help me maintain my hair at home, but should we be straightening our hair at home?

Lamorena says, "While it’s possible to straighten hair at home, I’d recommend going to a professional for the best results. Stylists know how to work with different hair types, adjust heat settings accordingly, and use high-quality products that protect your hair." If we decide to forego a stylist's expertise, she says we can "accidentally cause damage with uneven heat or over-processing."

Sturdivant-Drew agrees that it's best to see a stylist "for the first few silk presses," but it's not impossible to safely straighten your own hair. "If you have the right tools and products, along with research, you can achieve this hairstyle at home," she says.

How should different hair types approach a silk press?

Just like everyone doesn't have the same skin complexion or undertones, hair types can differ too. This means someone with a fine hair isn't always going to have the same routine as someone with thicker strands — which is why all silk presses aren't the same. "There's definitely no one-size-fits-all approach. The technique used depends on the client’s hair type and texture," Lamorena confirms. This isn't to scare you, however!

Sturdivant-Drew says, "The process of getting a silk press is pretty standard — prepping the hair with shampoo, conditioner, and heat protectant, followed by straightening with a blow dryer and flat iron, and finishing with a lightweight oil or serum."

She and Lamorena do agree that some hair textures require a little more than others though. Lamorena says you could only need "a simple blowout and flat iron" while someone may need "more intensive treatments like keratin or a Brazilian blowout for longer-lasting results." If your hair is very curly or textured — and you're ultimately not seeing the results you want — she says chemically straightening your hair is another option. However, Sturdivant-Drew reminds me, "Stylists usually adjust heat settings based on their client's hair health and texture."

Either way, we always recommend you check with your stylist before making any permanent or lasting decisions!

What should you avoid doing before getting a silk press?

Getting a silk press doesn't always involve chemicals, but there are still things you need to avoid before your appointment. Unlike the steps you may follow at home, Lamorena wants you to "avoid loading your hair with a bunch of heavy products " because this can "make the straightening process less effective and lead to more heat being used" than you need. Also, she doesn't want you to wash your hair because "natural oils protect your hair from the heat."

It probably goes without saying, but you also shouldn't book a silk press appointment if you've already straightened your hair. "...that can make it harder for the stylist to work with and could increase the risk of damage," says Lamorena. Besides that, Sturdivant-Drew advises against "using color or relaxers should be avoided before getting a silk press" because "this could lead to a lot of breakage."

What increases a risk of heat damage with this style?

As gorgeous as silk presses are, it's possible to use "too much heat," according to Lamorena. She says, "People tend to crank up the heat on their flat irons and blow dryers, but that can seriously damage the hair cuticle, especially if your hair is fine or already fragile." Something I've learned over time is that a licensed and experienced hair stylist has better knowledge of what's really going on with our hair. They're able to have a clearer view of your scalp, roots, split ends, and more.

The other thing that contribute to damage is not protecting your hair. Lamorena implores that heat protectant products are "are crucial for minimizing damage." Even if you use the right products, you could be straightening your hair way too often. It's normal to want to have straighter hairstyles for a little while, but you should keep in mind that you don't want to overdo it.

"Not prepping or using a heat protectant on your hair will cause a lot of damage. Silk presses require a lot of heat, so it's best to use good heat protectant," adds Sturdivant-Drew. She personally prefers to use Smooth Moisture's Thermal Hair Strengthener because "their system is built for silk presses specifically." She loves that it truly upholds against heat and "adds a nice shine to the hair" once you apply it.

When would it be recommended that a client avoid getting a silk press?

Here comes the not so fun part. As much as you don't want to hear this, your hair may not be able to handle getting a silk press right now. "If your hair is already damaged, it's best to hold off on straightening. Hair that's brittle, dry, or over-processed can be further damaged by heat styling," says Lamorena. What you can do in the meantime is help strengthen your hair by giving yourself "deep conditioning treatments," according to Lamorena.

This is completely up to you and your stylish, but Lamorena suggests staying away from having your hair straightened "during really humid months...if you're prone to frizz" because "the style may not last as long."

Is there a limit to how often clients should receive a silk press?

I'm not an expert, but even I know too much of something can become a bad thing. In the case of using excess heat, I can imagine the implications of that over time. Lamorena says, "There's definitely a limit. You don't want to be straightening your hair too often," and shares her rule of thumb for textures:

  • Naturally Curly or Textured Hair — Limit silk presses to once or twice a month to avoid weakening the hair or losing your curl pattern.
  • Other Hair Types — Keep it to no more than once a week.

All hair types are capable of experiencing "long-term damage," but giving "your hair a break between sessions helps maintain its health," Lamorena says.

Sturdivant-Drew stresses, "Taking a break between silk presses is important in allowing your hair to recover and maintain the health of your hair. I recommend limiting your silk presses to every 6-8 weeks."

How can clients maintain this style at home during the fall?

Even though cooler temperatures means you won't have to fight against possible frizz, you still have to take care of your silk press. "Maintaining a straight style during the fall can be tricky with cooler weather, wind, and dryness in the air, but it’s doable," says Lamorena. She suggests that you use:

  • Use a flat iron with adjustable heat settings to avoid unnecessary damage. Tools like the Dyson Corrale or GHD Platinum+ are solid options
  • A wide-tooth comb is great for detangling without pulling or breaking the hair

"Keeping up with a regular routine and using the right tools and products can really help your style last, even through the challenges that fall weather brings," she says.

No matter what your hair type is, Sturdivant-Drew suggests "wrapping your hair correctly and using a bonnet" as they're "key to maintaining" a silk press. Similar to what Lamorena said earlier, Sturdivant-Drew believes "humidity is your worst enemy...so try to avoid humid environments as best as possible!"
