7 Myths About Plus-Size Fashion Debunked

If you’re like us, you’ve likely become obsessed with AMC’s brand new show Dietlandbased on Sarai Walker’s best-selling novel of the same name. The series tells the story of Plum Kettle (played by actress Joy Nash), who is the ghostwriter of the editor to one of New York’s hottest fashion magazines. On the show, Plum, a visibly plus-size woman, is always looking fierce, fabulous, and trendy. This is in large part to Katie Riley, costume designer and fashion impresario.

Here, Riley, who lives and works in New York, debunks the biggest myths about plus-size fashion and how women of all shapes and sizes should feel empowered to dress how they want. (Photo via Erik Madigan Heck/AMC)

Myth 1: Stick to dark colors

Riley thinks that this myth couldn’t be further from the truth. If you love a color, just go for it, and embrace shades that complement your skin tone rather than your waistline. Another tip? “If monochromatic [brights] feel overwhelming, try mixing in neutrals or a contrasting tone in accessories,” she says. Add in shades like black and navy to metallics and animal prints to make highly pigmented hues feel less intimidating.

Myth 2: Don’t mix prints and patterns

One of Riley’s favorite styling tricks is pattern mixing, and she recommends it to every one of her clients. “It’s a playful and sophisticated way to work with your clothes,” she adds, noting that if you’ve been looking for ways to add interest to your wardrobe, this is it. She suggests unconventional pattern pairings, like florals or stripes paired with plaid. “It’s really all about what makes you feel confident and strong,” according to Riley.

Myth 3: Miniskirts aren’t for everyone

Who has time for such lies?! “This is so not true — it’s about finding the right mini for you,” Riley says. The silhouette of your itty bitty mini is just as important as the length. One thing that she suggests is trying on different shapes of short skirts (who knew?). How the cut lays on your curves will determine what cropped style is best for you.

Myth 4: Keep accessories quiet

Riley knows the power of statement accessories to punch up a simple outfit (like a T-shirt and jeans). Don’t be afraid to sidestep safe choices and dare to stand out with a bold bag or a head-turning bright necklace. “It can transform a look and really dress it up!” the costume designer, who also worked on Mozart in the Jungle, explains.

Myth 5: Light colors make you look bigger

According to Riley, “It’s not about the value of the hue, it’s about the fit and how you feel in the pieces.” People will sense if you are unsure or self-conscious in your clothes. Covering up or constantly tugging is a telltale sign that you’re second-guessing your choice. But, in the end, balance is key. Lighter colors don’t automatically translate to an unflattering outfit, but lack of proportion will. Riley, who also worked on MTV’s Finding Carter, suggests for those who might find an all-white ensemble daunting is to try pairing a white T-shirt or a light-colored blouse with a dark denim bottom.

Myth 6: It’s hard to shop for plus-size fashions

Listen up: we all know that it can be difficult to find clothes that are fashionable, functional, and flattering. But we’re introduced to new brands, new designers, and new looks every single day — trust and believe that there are options out there that fit your needs.

Riley notes that the fashion market is finally starting to understand that every woman has the right to look and feel amazing in her clothing. Brands like Universal Standard, Eloquii, and Premme are just a few of the names redefining plus-size shopping. High-end designers, however, are just starting to see the potential in this demographic. Online retailer 11 Honoré launched last year to address this very void in the market and has since partnered with body-positive labels ranging from Prabal Gurung and Christian Siriano (both longtime supporters of inclusive sizing) to TOME and Jonathan Simkhai.

Myth 7: Oversized clothing makes you look smaller

Well-tailored clothing is the way to go — no matter if you’re a size 0 or a size 32. Oversized items can add unwanted bulk, but mostly they can hide your natural curves and mistakenly add volume to your frame. Riley tells us that folks should pay attention to where seams fall on their body and not be afraid to visit a tailor. If a seam is off-center, warped, or stretched, it’s time to revisit your fashion choice. “I am a big believer in finding a good tailor. Sometimes a small adjustment can make a big difference,” Riley adds.

Since I just harped on all the dreary, outdated shoe trends for 2025, it's only fair I give you all the options you should wear in the new year! I also heard you when you said to let people wear what they want... Since I try to be a girl's girl, I want to give you as many exciting shoe trends that'll align with your personal style as well.

Instead of solely relying on my own wits this time, I reached out to Stitch Fix stylish Jessica Sockel; fashion expert and principal of The Curio, Maggie Gillette Sowislo; personal stylist Sarah Brandt of Shop the City; and Rusty Hall, CEO of Mephisto USA. Here's what stylists and fashion experts have to say about all the best shoe trends for 2025!

Scroll for all the 2025 shoe trends your feet — and outfits — will love!

Steve Madden

1. 'Mocha Mousse' Kitten Heel Boots

Don't fight it — this style is back and better than ever. "We have all seen that Pantone has named 'Mocha Mousse' [color of the year], cementing that brown has surpassed black as the go-to neutral," Brandt muses. As for why she believes kitten heels boots will be a popular style in 2025, she believes it's a "super wearable" choice "for the colder weather months."

2. Elevated loafers and flats on par with 'Quiet Luxury'

Did you really think we were done with quiet luxury? This is a trend that "focuses on classic design and high quality materials," according to Hall. After the success of, well, Succession, people aren't ready to let this trend go — and I don't blame them! Hall says, "We’re seeing a movement away from runway and status brands of the past several years, and instead, consumers have been drawn toward the echo of vintage style."

Hall also feels like people are looking to add comfort instead of "overabundance" to their wardrobes. He explained that after the pandemic, "comfort has prevailed as a predominant factor in shopping for footwear." You'll want to steer clear of gaudy designs with this shoe trend, instead reaching for "shoes with premium construction and materials" that don't have "noisy logos."

If you want a little bit of height, Sockel says "chunky loafers became a go-to for achieving the 'Prep School' aesthetic." She also saw that "ballet flats were a top request, with 38% of shoppers seeking ways to style them."

3. Low profile sneakers

This year saw the rise of the 'errand' or everyday sneaker. Hall says, "In contrast to the chunky sneaker silhouette, low-profile sneakers have been trending in 2024, and expect to see that trend continue in 2025."He adds that they're "defined by the upper confirming closely to the foot and lack of support around the ankle" making them "exceptionally versatile".

Both he and Brandt agree that the "iconic Adidas Sambas" are the driving force behind this with the latter adding, "But as they can be hard to come by, I’m seeing some alternate sneakers take the stage — particularly the Adidas SL72, and Onitsuka Tigers, especially the Mexico 66s."

If you need inspo for how to style them! Hall has a couple of tips because "the timeless low-profile look isn't going anywhere." He feels pairing them with "bell bottoms or flare-legged jeans" because they "create a long, clean line."

4. Colorful shoes

The world already feels like a mess sometimes — why not be bold and have fun with your outfits?! While you continue leaning into the red and burgundy shades that continued to trend this year, Hall feels that "turquoise, fuchsia, and yellow tones will brighten up this spring from the past couple of seasons of neutrals."

Another outfit tip he has is to "opt for white and soft ecru shades in the rest of the outfit" as this will "help these bold colors speak for themselves."

5. T-Strap Shoes

If you're still watching The Great Gatsby, you may be familiar with what Gillette Sowislo calls the "new shoe profile." In other words, she feels they're "an update on the Mary Jane trend we've been seeing for a few seasons."

We couldn't get enough of the revival of this that trend so it's going to be exciting to see you and other shoppers rock them with your 2025 outfits. Honestly, Sowislo is sure that "this versatile design can be found in flats, heels, and wedges."

6. Wooden Platform Shoes

Wooden platform shoes are having their comeback moment; more notably clogs. Sowislo says, "Since Chloe designer Chemena Kamali decked out the front row of her show in matching wood-bottomed platform sandals, the trend for boho-inspired shoes has risen. These can look like the playful platforms she debuted or be a more practical pair of everyday clogs."

Sockel added, "Looking ahead, we [Stitch Fix] predict a shift toward heeled shoes—think chic booties, clogs, and sandals—that pair seamlessly with oversized jeans and a simple tee for an effortlessly polished Easy Street look."

2025 already has a nice ring to it – the new year always offers a fresh start, a nice chance to make improvements in all areas of your life. Technology is undoubtedly one of those things that’ll always make our lives better (well, depending on how you look at it), so the new year is the perfect time to revisit what your devices are doing for you. If you can think of more ‘cons’ than ‘pros,’ it might be time to upgrade your outdated tech gadgets.

Tip: do not throw your devices away – instead, turn them into an authorized recycling facility or sell them to a repair shop, because your old stuff may just be someone else’s treasure.

These 5 outdated tech gadgets are totally worth replacing in 2025.

Axa Crown / PEXELS

1. Wired headphones

It feels weird to say, but wired headphones are so outdated, especially considering the vast variety of hands-free, wire-free bluetooth headphone options on the market now.

Not only are wired headphones outdated, they’re also not very practical. They aren’t very workout- or travel-friendly, since they can fall out (or rather, get ripped out) of your ears easily.

A lot of today’s bluetooth headphone options – from AirPods to over-the-head designs – also have way better audio quality than wired ones.

Jéshoots / PEXELS

2. Anything older than an iPhone 12

The iPhone 12 launched in 2020, making it a whopping 5 years old in 2025. It doesn't sound that long, but Apple's made a ton of upgrades and improvements to their iPhone models since.

Due to the mass amounts of upgrades and improvements, snagging the newest iPhone may just surprise you in what it can do – and make your life easier all the while.

Anna Tarazevich / PEXELS

3. Chunky old speakers

My family’s owned the same stereo speakers for, like, 20 years. I mean, if it’s not broke, don’t fix it, but music, TV shows, and movies could sound so much better on a modern speaker.

If you or your family tend to hold on to older technology like chunky old speakers, it’s time to convince them that a hi-fi sound bar is the right upgrade. Sound bars often display much richer bass sounds, clearer dialogue, and provide a more immersive audio experience overall!

George Milton / PEXELS

4. Clunky printers

If you’ve entirely worn out your 2000s-era printer, shopping for a sleeker model could save you so much money, time, and result in higher-quality prints, no matter what you’re printing out.

Newer models often use less ink than older ones and can handle larger print jobs with ease. Plus, they don't take up nearly as much space in your home office.

Cottonbro Studio / PEXELS

5. Y2K-era PCs

If you’re still using a big ol’ PC, you’re way past due to treat yourself to a new iMac or Macbook. Get with the times, y'all! Apple models are the only computers I can recommend, based on my experience. They’re sleek, clean, fast, easy to use, and have great security measures.

It feels like everyone has at least one Apple device these days, so if you’re looking for a splurge moment, this is your sign.

Powder rooms, or half baths, are truly the most exciting spaces to design in a home. You can take bold risks without blowing your budget and it’s the perfect place to personalize with unexpected touches, like swoon-worthy wallpaper or statement tile that reflect your unique style. To inspire your next 2025 makeover, we’ve rounded up our favorite half bath decor ideas from top interior designers, proving that even the smallest spaces can make a big impact.

Trend alert: 15 half bath decor ideas every designer is loving in 2025:

Michael P.H. Clifford

Idea #1: Scalloped Backsplash

This half bath designed by Kirsten Blazek of a1000xbetter is an absolute stunner. The home hails from the roaring '20s and elements like unlacquered brass hardware, natural stone countertops, and a B&W silent film print make subtle calls to that era. The scalloped backsplash is a perfect detail for this character-filled powder room. Check out the full gorgeous cottage remodel by Blazek.

Gavin Cater

Idea #2: Marble Sink

Designers Amanda Leigh and Taylor Hahn of celebrity-loved design firm House of Rolison are never afraid to go bold with marble. The design duo were inspired by the home’s French-country architecture and this bath exudes the timeless luxury found throughout the home. Get the look with this Etsy Wall Mount Calacatta Viola Marble Sink Basin.

Artistic Tile

Idea #3: Statement Mirror

Choosing a decorative or oversized mirror can make the space feel larger and add visual interest. This Art Deco bath from Artistic Tile pairs beautiful pink tile with a dramatic gold mirror, both complementing the rainbow onyx sink.

Madeline Harper

Idea #4: Bold Wallpaper

There's nothing like a statement wallpaper and the half bath is an excellent opportunity to try something fresh and colorful. Austin architect Alice Arterberry of Arterberry Cooke designed this charming bathroom with Cole & Son Frutto Proibito Wallpaper in Hyacinth & Orange. Here are some wallpaper ideas to try!

Shade Degges

Idea #5: Classic Beadboard

Karan and Sapna Aggarwal of L.A. design firm Bungalowe designed this European-inspired half bath by pairing a classic beadboard with House of Hackney London Rose wallpaper. So romantic!

Cari Field

Idea #6: Pattern Blending

James and Christine of Stewart-Schafer thoughtfully renovated their clients' 200-year-old home in Connecticut, merging Persian flair with timeless classic beauty. This stunning floral B&W wallpaper pairs perfectly with the dramatic B&W marble sink. Keep the elements in the same color territory to make the patterns work seamlessly.

Gavin Cater

Idea #7: Textured Walls

Experiment with natural stone or wood accents for warmth and create textured walls for contrast and a unique touch. Bungalowe's Karan and Sapna paired this travertine sink with plastered walls that organically feature the natural stone, creating an earthy, modern palette that compliments the home’s architectural roots.

Courtesy of Hollis Jordyn Design

Idea #8: Colorful Sink

Who says sinks have to be white? Design principals Hollis LaPlante and Jordyn Grohl of Hollis Jordyn Design featured a teal sink, retro brass light from Etsy, and Benjamin Moore Sandblast paint to elevate this 1960s bath. "We wanted to create a moody powder room and thought the mauve paint tone really accentuated the teal and brass in a romantic way," says Grohl.

Gavin Cater

Idea #9: Floating Sink

Because powder rooms are meant generally for guests, there's little need to store all your bathroom essentials. Floating sinks help maximize space. In the same home as above, Karan and Sapna of Bungalowe use a travertine sink and quiet luxury aesthetic to create a calm, soothing space for a bathroom break.

Nils Timm

Idea #10: Dark and Moody

Don't be afraid to go dark in a small bathroom. Drama is good when it comes to half baths where you want to make an impact. Amanda and Taylor of House of Rolison created a tonal palette that combines luxury with functionality in this elevated design.

Gavin Cater

Idea #11: Homey Vibes

Add a small vase with fresh flowers, a scented candle, and/or an elegant soap dish to personalize the space. Here's another nature-inspired gem by House of Rolison.

Gavin Cater

Idea #12: Unique Lighting

Add a statement light, like a small chandelier or pendant, to elevate the space, and consider fixtures with dimmable options for versatility. Love this unique space by House of Rolison.

Gavin Cater

Idea #13: Maximized Wall Space

Because you don't get a lot of floor space in a half bath, use walls to your advantage. Even the toilet doesn't touch the floors in this bathroom inspired by Karan and Sapna's trip to Oaxaca, Mexico.

Cari Field

Idea #14: Tile Wall

Tile is a practical option for bathrooms and with a small space, you can go big here. Hollis and Jordyn infused this space with a pop of blue tile that travels from floor to ceiling, paired with contrasting B&W tile floors, creating an eclectic and colorful space. Pro tip: Pay attention to floors too! Heated floors can also be a luxurious touch.

Nils Timm

Idea #15: Monochrome

This green on green bath by House of Rolison is a showstopper. Find a jewel-toned marble and color-match it to the wall paint for a luxurious vibe that will wow your guests.

Chef Genevieve LaMonaca

Foolproof Beef Wellingtonby Chef Genevieve LaMonaca

Ingredients:

  • 2 lbs beef Tenderloin center cut canon (ask your butcher)
  • 1-2 T Avocado Oil for searing
  • 8oz shallots, minced
  • 1 lb Mushrooms, cremini or button, minced
  • 6 T butter
  • 1 t thyme leaves
  • 1 T minced Parsley
  • Salt and Pepper TT
  • Pastry Dough x 2:
  • Bread Flour 1 1/2 cups plus 1 T
  • Butter 3/4 cup (6oz) cubed
  • Salt 1/2 t
  • Ice cold water 1/4 cup

Directions:

  • Slice off a 2 lb center cut canon from a beef tenderloin or ask your butcher.
  • Pat dry, season heavily with salt and pepper. sear on all sides using a fat with a high smoke point (Avocado oil)
  • Tip: Precooking your beef is the secret to preventing a soggy bottom crust and most of the moisture is removed prior. This will also ensure that your tenderloin is cooked perfect every time.
  • Roast in a 150 oven to an internal temp of 115. Chill
  • TIP: I like to measure my canon lengthwise side to side then the circumference by using butchers twine. This will help me determine the size I need to make my prosciutto bed and pastry sheet.
  • Make your mushroom duxelles. Saute half a pound of minced shallots in 6 T butter then add 1 lb finely chopped mushrooms and thyme, saute, deglaze with sherry wine as necessary, cook until pan is dry, add minced parsley, season and set aside.
  • Add flour and butter to a counter top mixer and using a paddle, combine on lowest speed until the butter is turned into crumbs and all the flour is Incorporated. Pour in your ice water and mix until combined. Place dough onto the counter and form into a ball then flatten/ wrap with plastic wrap and chill.
