When an interior designer decorates their own home, you know it’s going to be stunning. And when that interior designer is Nate Berkus and his husband Jeremiah Brent, then you really know you’re in for a treat. The most picturesque apartment in Manhattan was recently featured in Architectural Digest and had everyone seeing gold (so much so that shortly after the feature, the three-bedroom, 2800-square-foot apartment was put on the market). Sadly, the furniture is not included in the asking price, leaving it up to you to get the look all on your own. You know, just in case you were tempted to make an offer.
Nate’s design work is timeless: He creates a cool blend of antiques with modern touches and bold color palettes. All the rooms in his home feel personal, and he’s totally the king of layering textures — think handwoven rugs, baskets, velvet chairs and sleek lines. Oh, and a ton of metallics.
To get the same look of Nate’s antique copper table, use a little gold or copper spray paint on IKEA’s inexpensive nesting tables, like in this DIY from Style Me Pretty. Cover your throw pillows with these gray linen covers from H&M ($13) or go all out and grab these mustard velvet side chars from Anthropologie ($1600). Natural wood is one of Nate’s favorite textures to work with, so bring in some warmth with a couple of decorative wooden bowls from Macy’s ($26).
Family Room
Nothing says “home” like shelves full of books and a soft gray couch where you can curl up and actually read them. Instead of covering the warm wood floors, Nate opted for narrow runners with neutral patterns.
Create a sense of warmth with a soft gray sectional from West Elm ($1,300-$2,000). If you love your floors, pull a trick from Nate’s playbook and opt for these long runners from Overstock ($131) instead of an area rug. Bring in some signature Berkus gold with this DIY table from Brit + Co and top it off with a gold dish designed by Berkus himself from Target ($25).
Kitchen
Thanks to plenty of natural light — hello, domed casement windows — and a wide, white tile backsplash, bold black cabinets don’t overwhelm the room. Right on theme, a metallic island brings in the luxe style that you’d expect to find in this power couple’s kitchen. Yes, we’d like to move in yesterday.
Even if you don’t happen to have huge windows in your kitchen, you can still create a sense of drama with DIY marble open shelving from Martha Stewart and metallic kitchen accessories like this gold cocktail shaker from Brit + Co ($54). Bring in some contrast with black dishware from Bed, Bath and Beyond ($70), and if you need a “hand” while you’re cooking, try this gold hand DIY from House of Jade Interiors for a place to put your rings while you perfect your pie crust.
Nursery + Playroom
Mr. Berkus and Mr. Brent transformed their home office into a nursery for their daughter, Poppy. Even though the color palette is soft and neutral, the accents are full-on glamour, from the faux fur details to the gold storage accessories. Because who doesn’t keep diapers in a gold bowl?
Make your own version of this serene nursery with the same white crib from RH Baby and Child ($850) and a dalmatian area rug from Society 6 ($28). DIY a Behind the Seams faux fur stool, and then deck out your changing table with plenty of gilded storage from Target ($25).
DIY a way cooler teepee — err, fort — with this tutorial from Brit + Co and make it super cozy with a few faux sheepskin rugs from IKEA ($13). Bring in stylish stuffed animals, like a pastel pink elephant from RH Baby and Child ($29), and use extra large baskets from Pottery Barn ($129) for storage.
Master Bedroom
Nate’s design for the master bedroom is completely unpretentious, and the perfect space to retreat to. Soft throw blankets, a leather sofa and a simple headboard give the bedroom a fresh but decidedly masculine feeling. Naturally, a solid copper side table and big gold lamps keeps the home’s metallic theme going strong.
To give your bedroom the same calm and relaxing vibes, stock up on a cozy throw blanket from Nordstrom Rack ($30) for the end of the bed. Add more soft texture with a DIY wall hanging from Brit + Co and then have fun with gold accents like a metal drum side table from West Elm ($249) or splurge on the crazy cool pendant light from Apparatus Studio (prices start at $3,000).
