Which Netflix Holiday Movies Are Worth Your Time? We Graded Them

After getting into the holiday movie game in 2017 with A Christmas Prince and Christmas Inheritance, Netflix doubled its output in 2018, debuting four additional festive original films. Brit + Co Senior Writer Cortney Clift watched all six of the seasonal flicks and graded them on her very own (un)scientific scale, so you know which are worth your time. (Spoiler: All of them, really, but not for the same reasons.)

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I watch a lot of really bad Christmas movies. Maybe I’m drawn to them as a temporary distraction from our bleak political landscape. Maybe deep down I really just want to be that city girl who goes home to her charming small town and falls in love with a sexy woodworker. Who can really say? (Me. I can say. It’s the latter.) In all my hours developing my expertise in this niche genre, I’ve learned there is a fine line between these movies being delightfully bad and just plain brutal to watch. Since it’s almost Christmas, I want to offer up a very special gift to you. Should you find yourself in a cookie coma on your parents’ couch over the holidays, here are my unfiltered (very professional) thoughts on the top holiday movies currently available on Netflix.

THE Princess Switch

Summary: Stacy De Novo is a baker who needs to learn to loosen up a little bit. When her longtime bestie Kevin tells her that she’s been accepted into a baking competition in Belgravia, they embark on a last-minute trip that’s a little bit of work and a little bit of fun. While she’s there, she runs into the prince’s fiancée — who just happens to look like she could be Stacy’s long-lost twin. They switch lives and complicated romantic endeavors ensue.

Worth watching? This is essentially 90 minutes of Vanessa Hudgens giving a young Lindsay Lohan a run for her money. So yes, I’d say that’s worth some time. Most of the plot lines are visible from a mile away, but one thing I did not see coming was a pivotal scene in which Kevin (pictured above) wanders into Princess Margaret’s room shirtless, accompanied by a truly unbelievable amount of abs. Consider this clip the only trailer you need.

Final Grade: B

A Christmas Prince

Summary: Amber is a “journalist” whose first-ever assignment is to hop on an international flight to attend a press conference in Aldovia regarding the appointment of the country’s new king. Spoiler alert: The prince (soon-to-be king) doesn’t show and the press conference is canceled. But Amber is a real journalist, you see. She goes undercover as the royal family’s tutor and discovers that, OMG, she kind of loves the prince… and maybe he loves her too??

Worth watching? This is a resounding YUP from me. It really gives you everything you want from a cheesy Christmas flick: a grand castle, snowball fights, PG-rated romance, and a sassy sidekick in the form of Prince Richard’s little sister, Princess Emily. This one is ideal to watch with others so you can discuss the cheesier parts over many glasses of wine.

Final Score: A

THE Holiday Calendar

Summary: As one of Netflix’s earlier 2018 holiday releases, this one got a little buried in the queue. (I also temporarily forgot the plot and had to Google it to refresh my memory, so maybe there’s a reason for that.) Abby is a photographer faced with the classic starving-artist dilemma: She wants to make art but she also needs to make money. And if the career crisis weren’t complicated enough, her best friend (played by Quincy) returns to town, and it seems like maybe he doesn’t really want to be just friends after all.

Worth watching? Sure, why not? Are you interested in watching a montage of Gregory Peck’s very attractive grandson (Ethan Peck) take Abby on a slew of very festive dates? Would you also like to watch Quincy sulk about said dates while wearing a Santa hat? Then grab some of mom’s eggnog and settle in. I should also probably mention that a magical advent calendar and William from This Is Us are involved.

Final Score: B-

(Photo via Netflix)

A Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding

Summary: We’re back in Aldovia a year later for the royal wedding. Except, oh no! Life as a royal is turning out to be a lot more restricting than laid-back Amber is used to. Plus, her fiancé is kinda MIA lately and the people of Aldovia don’t seem to be loving his plans for the country. But maybe Amber’s seasoned journalism skills can save both her upcoming marriage and the country.

Worth watching? Meh. Maybe? Unfortunately, this sequel doesn’t feel quite as enjoyable as its predecessor. Between King Richard being in maybe five scenes and the semi-sexist remark he makes to Amber when she offers to help him fix the national crisis he’s caused, the romance in this one feels like — well, actually, it doesn’t really feel like anything. However, Princess Emily is as hilarious as ever, and this flick offers a recasting of Amber’s dad, who is just the right blend of cringey and endearing.

Final Score: C

(Photo via Netflix)

THE Christmas Chronicles

Summary: Kurt Russell stars as one of the cooler castings of old St. Nick in this new Netflix movie. It’s business as usual on Christmas Eve for Mr. Claus until spunky Kate and her angsty older brother Teddy spot his sleigh in the neighborhood and hop in to have a look around. But whoops! Santa doesn’t see them and takes off. It turns out it’s a bit chilly in a magical convertible 35,000 feet above ground in December, so Kate taps Santa’s shoulder to ask for a blanket and scares the jingle bells out of the poor dude. Cue a massive sleigh accident that needs to be resolved before sunrise.

Worth watching? Sure. This one is more akin to Tim Allen’s The Santa Clause than a cheesy romantic Christmas flick, but it’s enjoyable just the same. If you’re looking for a movie the whole family (even dad) can enjoy, this is your best bet. TBH, I wasn’t crazy about this movie’s interpretation of Santa elves, but I digress. Tune in for a very pure Christmas message and some fun cameos from the Hudson/Russell clan.

Final Score: B-

(Photo via Michael Gibson/Netflix)

 Christmas Inheritance

Summary: Ellen is the heiress to her father’s gift business, but her dad is worried that she’s a little too into all the parties that come with the lifestyle to successfully take over. As a test, he sends her for a weekend trip up to rustic Snow Falls on a very limited budget to see how she fares. (How this relates to running a company, I’m not entirely sure, but let’s just go with it.) While in Snow Falls, she sparks up a romance with the town’s taxi driver/innkeeper/resident single dude, even though she has a fiancé waiting for her back home.

Worth watching? Hell yeah. This one really leans into the Christmas ambiance I’m looking for when I watch these movies: a well-decorated inn, snowy main street, quaint local diner, etc. It even has a lead you might recognize. The actor who plays Jake had a recurring role on HBO’s Girls and was also in the hit indie comedy Obvious Child.

Final Score: A-

Miracles happen once in a while, which is apparent because The Princess Diaries 3 is in the works at Disney, according to The Hollywood Reporter. It's been 20 years since we last saw Mia, Lily, and Queen Clarisse (and since all three took part in one of the greatest birthday party scenes in film history. Tons of snacks! Karaoke! Mattress surfing!).

The Princess Diaries and The Princess Diaries 2 remain heartfelt, uplifting, and empowering, and we'll never get tired of them. Plus, the resurgence of Y2K pop culture just makes dressing up like Mia more fun than it already was. While much of this reported film (including the cast) is still rumor-only, we do have a few tidbits to share and will keep updating as news is released.

Who's in The Princess Diaries 3 cast?

Buena Vista Pictures/Walt Disney Studios

Anne Hathaway finally confirmed her return to the world of Genovia with an Instagram video in early October. But will Chris Pine be joining her?

"I don't know anything," the actor said on The Today Show on October 8. "Call Disney. Call Bob Iger. The answer is honestly I don’t know anything about it. I think it’s fantastic."

Chris' character Nicholas Devreaux, and his relationship with Mia in Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, was a lot of millennial and Gen Z viewers' first enemies-to-lovers relationship, and it's safe to say we've never been the same. While Chris Pine claims he has no clue whether he'll return, his recent haircut (which is very similar to Nicholas') has fans calling his bluff.

"I need Chris Pine to return as Nicholas Devereaux looking like this in Princess Diaries 3, and I will not be taking questions at this time," one X user tweeted, while another agrees, "oh he's definitely already taping the 3rd movie as we speak and you can't convince me otherwise."

Julie Andrews and Raven-Symoné have also been a part of the franchise, but there's no word on whether they'd return either. In December of 2022, Variety reported that Julie Andrews doubts that she'll be able to return to the franchise, but we're still holding out hope!

Stay tuned for the official Princess Diaries 3 cast list!

When is the Princess Diaries 3 release date?

Walt Disney Studios

Rom-com fans will be thrilled to know Adele Lim, who worked on Crazy Rich Asians (one of the best rom-coms of the 21st Century) will direct. We don't have a release date yet, but it appears pre-production has begun. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Supergirl and Quantum Leap writer Aadrita Mukerji is working on the script, and producer Debra Martin Chase (who worked on the first two films) is returning to produce. We're all in favor of women behind the scenes, so this news gets two thumbs up from us!

Anne Hathaway (whose new movie The Idea Of You is streaming on Prime Video now) recently revealed the movie's development is going very well. “We’re in a good place,” she tells V Magazine. “That’s all I can say. There’s nothing to announce yet. But we’re in a good place.”

What has Anne Hathaway said about Julie Andrews?

Buena Vista Pictures/Walt Disney Studios

In her recent cover story with Vanity Fair, Anne Hathaway talks about how working with Julie Andrews changed her life forever. “She respected that [fans] had a relationship to her work that spanned their entire lives and made it a beautiful experience for them,” she says of Julie stopping to sign autographs every day during The Princess Diaries. “I don’t know that I was always capable of that. So I’ve learned that I want to handle myself in a way that I’m going to be proud of at a later date.”

Anne also has a major appreciation for howThe Princess Diaries franchise as a whole turned her life upside down. "This was the film that changed my life," she says. "It felt so big at the time, and it wound up being so big, and it's kind of just gotten bigger as my life has progressed...So this is a total fusion of life and work, and all the things, and I'm just so proud to be in this movie."

What is The Princess Diaries 3 about?

Buena Vista Pictures/Walt Disney Studios

We don't have an official script, but according to sources, the film might continue the storyline from the previous two movies. Based on the books by Meg Cabot, both films follow Mia Thermopolis (Anne Hathaway), an awkward high schooler who learns she is next in line to be queen of Genovia. Makeovers, royal balls, romance, and tons of fun follow.

Gary Marshall, the director of the first two movies who passed away in 2016, told People that one idea he shared with Anne Hathaway was to set The Princess Diaries 3 in the big city: "It looks like we want to do Princess Diaries 3 in Manhattan." As someone who lives in New York City, I might be biased, but setting the story in Manhattan would be INCREDIBLE. Would Mia hang out at the Met? Would the movie feature any nods to The Devil Wears Prada? Anne Hathaway, if you need another background extra, hit me up!

Where can you watch The Princess Diaries 3?

Buena Vista Pictures/Walt Disney Studios

It's TBD whether this film would release in theaters or on streaming, but you can watch both The Princess Diariesand The Princess Diaries 2on Disney+ now ;).

What's the Princess Diaries cast saying?

Buena Vista Pictures/Walt Disney Studios

Don't fret, Princess Diaries fans, Chris Pine is TOTALLY on board for a Genovian reunion. "Yeah, I'm here! I'm here for it," Pine told Entertainment Tonight. "Give me a phone call or an email."

The actor (and our personal crush) played Lord Nicholas Deveraux in 2004's The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. Deveraux rivaled Anne Hathaway's Princess Mia Thermopolis for the throne, becoming her friend and love interest.

Recently, Hathaway toldPeople that the a third installment in the franchise was still in development and far from production, but it was "thrilling" to "see the level of excitement for it." However, while the movie industry gears turn slowly, she is still very much advocating for the long-awaited three-quel.

  • Outer Banks Season 4 Part 1 finally brings the cast back to the OBX.
  • John B., Sarah, Cleo, Pope, Kiara, and JJ are up against the Kooks — and other treasure hunters.
  • Season 4 feels more grounded and relatable than past seasons, making it a very strong installment.

If you know me, you know I'm a die hard Outer Banks season 1 fan. I binge watched the entire thing with my family in 2020 while quarantining on the real OBX, I joined the Drew Starkey fan club the moment he stepped onscreen, and I was obsessed with JJ and Kiara way before the internet started shipping them. So, needless to say, I've been waiting for Outer Banks season 4 with baited breath — especially when I heard rumors it would focus on JJ (Rudy Pankow) the way previous seasons had focused on John B. (Chase Stokes) in season 1, Pope (Jonathan Daviss) in season 2, and Kiara (Madison Bailey) in season 3.

I think season 1 will always be my favorite, but Outer Banks season 4 part 1 pleasantly surprised me. We're far enough into the show that we really care about the characters, and they have enough history with one another that we're invested in their decisions. Plus, returning to the OBX provided real-world stakes I could relate to as a viewer: family drama, dealing with bullies, and more. No matter whether you really love JJ, or you're always dreaming about your next beach vacation, here's whyOuter Banks season 4 absolutely NEEDS to be your weekend binge. (Serious spoilers ahead!!!)

We're Back On The Outer Banks!

Netflix

FINALLY! After a couple of seasons in the Caribbean and South America, Outer Banks is back, well, on the Outer Banks. Honestly, this automatically makes the season better because it provides a ton of familiarity, nostalgia, and comfort for readers. And it also provides a realistic, grounded aspect to the adventure. Because let's be honest, a group of teens hopping on a tiny plane and taking part in a jungle treasure hunt requires a little too much suspension of disbelief for me. Plus, just like Gossip Girl wouldn't be the same without Blair and Serena hitting up Bergdorf's, a Pogue beach & surfing day just feels right.

The Pogues Open Their Own Shop

Jackson Lee Davis/Netflix

The first episode of Outer Banks season 4 catches us up on that season 3 time jump. After learning how much money they actually have their hands on, the Pogues move into JJ's old house (renaming it "Poguelandia 2.0"), and open a bait, tackle, and charter shop. While I have a few questions about how six teens literally built a business without the help of a contractor, I love seeing this group lead regular lives. The shop plays into their strengths and allows them to cultivate their relationships in normal settings instead of life-or-death ones. Friendships are made in those boring moments, IMO.

The Pogues And Kooks Are Fighting Again

Netflix

Because so much of Outer Banks season 4 takes place on the OBX, it means John B., Sarah, JJ, Kie, Pope, and Cleo are once again clashing with Topper, Rafe, and the rest of the Kooks. Despite the fact this season features plenty of death-defying stunts, the scene that will stick with me the most is when the Pogues and Kooks wind up at the same beach access.

I audibly gasped when Ruthie, Topper's new girlfriend, plays chicken with the Pogues on the beach, almost hitting Kiara with her Jeep and running over a turtle hatch in the process. (IRL, protecting endangered sea turtles & their hatches are a big deal on the Outer Banks, so this definitely got a visceral reaction from me).

At the end of the day, the major (and arguably, the most painful) conflict of this teen drama is how the Kooks make the Pogues feel like they don't belong anywhere. And if you ask me, exploring this tension and these relationships is where the show truly shines.

The Villains Are Actually Scary

Jackson Lee Davis/Netflix

That being said, I found the villains this season, Lightner and Dalia, to be way scarier than I expected — especially once Lightner killed Terrance and almost killed Cleo. Every time he showed up onscreen, my heart started pounding like he was chasing me! The thought of being stuck in my bait shop alone with a creepy guy, especially one brandishing a knife? Thank you, next.

The Pogues Are Searching For More Than Blackbeard's Treasure

Jackson Lee Davis/Netflix

After Outer Banks season 3, the one thing I said I didn't want the show to do was go into supernatural, ghost territory. Turns out, that's exactly where we're going. Wes Genrette and his son-in-law Chandler Groff hire the Pogues to find Blackbeard's treasure, but it doesn't take long for them to realize they're once again in over their heads.

Wes is a direct descendent of Francis Genrette, the man responsible for killing Blackbeard and his wife Elizabeth. Now, Elizabeth haunts every generation of the Genrette family, and once she appears, you don't have long to live. Wes reveals his daughter Larissa (Chandler's late wife) saw Elizabeth a week before she died, and Wes himself has seen her, which means his days are numbered.

Now the Pogues have to find Elizabeth's amulet to break the curse. Their race against Lightner and Dalia brings Pope, Cleo, Sarah, and John B. to Charleston — and leavesPope and Sarah trapped in a crypt as it slowly floods.

Powers At Be Want To Bulldoze The Cut

Jackson Lee Davis/Netflix

If this show has proven anything, it's that the OBX is far from paradise. This season, some big names are trying to turn The Cut — including Poguelandia 2.0 — into an extension of the wealthier Figure Eight. Things get even more complicated when Hollis, who worked with Ward before he died, wants Rafe to be her financial partner...and then gets his girlfriend Sofia to convince him to sign her contract.

Rafe Could Actually Be Getting A Redemption Arc

Netflix

Drew Starkey admitted after season 1 that he didn't care whether Rafe got a redemption arc, and I agreed at the time. I found the idea of Rafe, who was so driven to please his father he'd literally murder for him, incredibly compelling. Plus, he's been the ringleader of the War on Pogues this whole time, so suddenly making him sympathetic towards them felt like backtracking on his character.

But now that I've seen him with Sofia, the romantic in me is kicking her feet and giggling.

Rafe still has his moments (like saying he'd never date a Pogue after finding out Sofia was from The Cut), but for better or worse, Sofia brings out the best in him. And in the aftermath of Ward's death, and his ultimate wish that Sarah and Rafe would make up, feeling sympathy for the Pogues might be Rafe's way of staying loyal to his dad.

I just want to know how Rafe is going to respond when he finds out Sofia overheard his comments about never dating a Pogue...and then tricked him into signing Hollis' contract. Messy, messy.

Luke Is Back

Jackson Lee Davis/Netflix

After JJ & Kiara said goodbye to JJ's dad Luke in Outer Banks season 2, he's been totally off the grid. Except, apparently, he hasn't? JJ learns Luke is back when he visits Barracuda Mike, but the father-son bonding quickly takes a turn for the crazy when Luke drops a piece of news that changes everything: he isn't JJ's biological father. Chandler Groff is.

JJ Has Actually Been A Kook This Whole Time

Netflix

JJ's entire character is based around the fact he's proud to be a Pogue. He hates the Kooks and everything they stand for, which is why when Luke reveals he isn't JJ's biological father, and that JJ is related to the Groff/Genrette clan, it totally sends JJ into orbit.

This Kook identity is something he's been running from the entire series — even before Kie had to reassure him that finding the gold didn't make them Kooks — and he's going to have to do some serious soul searching to figure out who he actually is now.

I was wholly sold on the theory Outer Banks 4 would reveal JJ and Sarah were siblings, but this is a pretty good alternative. And who knows? Maybe they're cousins. Fingers crossed JJ doesn't get a deadly visit from Elizabeth's ghost in part 2...

Ever since Timothée Chalamet’s starring role as Bob Dylan was announced, I've been on the edge of my seat waiting to hear him sing. (The same can be said for Paul Mescal's rumored role in the upcoming Beatles biopics. Let the men sing!) Last year's over-the-top Wonka proved Chalamet has the chops to be a musical leading man, but the new A Complete Unknown trailer proves he can excel at grounded storytelling just as much as caricatures.

Watch The New 'A Complete Unknown' Trailer!

This new trailer for the movie shows off just how much of a risk Bob Dylan took when he moved from folksy music to rock. And not only is he dealing with competing genres — he's also dealing with two different hearts: Sylvie Russo (Elle Fanning) and Joan Baez (Monica Barbaro). This biopic won't just celebrate Dylan's music. It'll get to the heart of who Dylan was, and explore the relationships solidified in pop culture history.

The A Complete Unknown trailer shows fragments of Bob Dylan’s life, while Timothée Chalamet, in the Dylan family’s Minnesota cabin, sings "A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall" throughout it all, tying together the past and the present. The film follows Dylan's move to New York City, as well as his rise to fame ahead of his historic 1965 Newport Folk Festival performance. Everything about Chalemet’s transformation proves he's primed for an Oscar, and this might just be the film that cements him as a true movie star.

There’s something for everyone in the movie, whether or not you’re a Dylan fanatic. Romance, old New York, musical performances. Elle Fanning and Monica Barbaro shine as Sylvie Russo and Joan Baez. If this is only a glimpse of the movie, the full film is sure to be one of 2024's best.

Some of us have sensitive tear ducts that seem to get triggered if the wind blows a little too hard — which can make it so tough for those of us who love a good liquid eyeliner. Suddenly, you look like you were just sobbing about a breakup, when in reality your allergies just got the best of you, leaving streaks of eyeliner and mascara.

However, it IS possible to find the best liquid eyeliner to wear that's long-lasting, waterproof, and perfectly pigmented.
