10 New Makeup Brands You Need to Know About Now

Makeup brands seem to launch just as fast as new frappuccino flavors — but there’s a select few that are actually destined for greatness. Whether it’s an Instagram launch that instantly develops a cult-following; a brand backed by a makeup-loving celeb on a mission to fill a major void in the market; or a beauty pioneer who pours her life’s work into making her visions available to the masses, there’s undoubtedly a new school of beauty superstars who you need on your radar right this moment. And, as always, we’re here to make the introductions.

1. Il Makiage

Year founded: 2018 in the U.S.

History: Brother and sister co-founders Oran Holtzman and Shiran Holtzman-Erel brought the brand to the U.S. in 2018 amid a shift toward natural and barely-there beauty. The siblings set out to usher in a maximalist movement in the beauty scene. They launched with over 1,000 high-impact, prestige products — the most ever for a beauty startup.

What you need:Infinity Long-Wear Matte Lip Cream ($27) and the Woke Up Like This Flawless Base Foundation ($47) — it comes in 50 shades.

How it’s disrupting the category: Unlike the trend that has leaned heavily toward minimalist beauty, Il Makiage entered the space specifically for those who are seriously into makeup, in all its boldest forms.

Noteworthy news: If you’re in New York City check out the shoppable Il Makiage pop-up shop, designed by world renowned architect Zaha Hadid. It’ll be moving to a new city (TBA) in a few months.

2. Dose of Colors

Year founded: 2013

History: Makeup artist Anna Petrosian started the brand after working as a freelance makeup artist for Sephora and MAC. Before launching her line, she’d create eye looks for Instagram that gained a lot of attention. She vividly remembers going into Naimie’s beauty store one day to stock up on lashes and brush cleaner when one of the employees told her that customers had come into the store wanting to purchase the products featured on Petrosian’s Instagram posts. That was the moment she realized that it was time to start her own cosmetics line.

What you need: The EyeDeal Duo ($25) combines the perfect pair of cream and powder shadows. The matte liquid lipstick ($18) will also be an instant fave.

How it’s disrupting the category: Aside from just having really good products, the collection consists of cruelty-free and vegan options for lips, eyes, and face. There’s no compromising on quality and product payoff, which is why it’s such a hit among Dose of Color’s more than two million Instagram followers.

Noteworthy news: The brand recently debuted a major collab with YouTube star Iluvsarahii. If you move fast, you still might be able to snag some of the colorful goods.

3. Pat McGrath Labs

Year founded: 2015

History: It’s only been three years since the fairy godmother of makeup, Pat McGrath, created this now billion-dollar business, and she certainly keeps beauty lovers on their toes with every new launch. The first product ever to hit the scene, Gold 001, sold out almost immediately.

What you need: No matter what it is, you know it’s going to be good — but if you’re up for going all out and diving head first into the glory of McGrath, splurge on the Skin Fetish Everything Kit ($350).

How it’s disrupting the category: McGrath went with the limited-edition and limited-run sales model that Kylie Cosmetics is known for. And if you ever want to slip down a rabbit hole of hypnotizing beauty inspo, just check out the brand’s Instagram feed.

Noteworthy news: Keep your eyes peeled to Instagram for all the newness.

4. Flesh Beauty

Year founded: 2018

History: Beauty veteran and former founding editor of Allure, Linda Wells, just launched a truly impressive 12-product collection that includes foundation in 40 shades, a primer, liquid and powder highlighters, blush, eye shadow, and lip color.

What you need: The standouts are the 40 shades of Firm Flesh Stick Foundation ($18) and the Fleshpot Eye & Cheek Gloss ($20), which is already a fan-fave.

How it’s disrupting the category: This is a line that really got the inclusivity thing right. Everything from the blush colors to the matte lippies were made with a wide range or skintones in mind.

Noteworthy news: Let’s just say we’ll be celebrating the holiday season for more reason than one.

5. JOAH Beauty

Year founded: 2018

History: Created by the same company that brought us Kiss Products (the master of false lashes and nails) this brand-new makeup line has everything you need to achieve all the top K-Beauty trends you’ve been swooning over.

What you need: The Glow Activator Radiance Primer ($10) will help you nail the glowy “glass skin” trend that K-Beauty is known for.

How it’s disrupting the category: The brand launched with a whopping 158 color products, covering everything from natural to bold wear. It also premiered exclusively at CVS stores with prices friendly enough for you to stock up on the full collection.

Noteworthy news: The entire collection is now online and rolling out in stores over the next few weeks.

6. Fenty Beauty

Year founded: 2017

History: You had to be living under a rock to not know that Rihanna launched a makeup line in 2017. Just in case you were — no judgment — it hit the scene and completely broke the internet (not to mention Sephora gondolas). The most notable of the line was a game-changing collection of 40 foundation shades that spanned the skin tone spectrum from fair to deep.

What you need: Everything — but if you have to choose, go with the Pro Filt’r  Foundation ($34).

How it’s disrupting the category: Fenty Beauty has officially set the standard for what can be considered an acceptable color range from a brand that touts itself as being inclusive. The “Fenty 40” is what many brands now mimic when creating a foundation category.

Noteworthy news: There’s no telling what jaw-dropping launch Rihanna has up her sleeve — but the platinum version of the brand’s now iconic “Trophy Wife” gold highlighter just hit stores. One hundred percent of every sale will go to Rihanna’s non-profit organization, The Clara Lionel Foundation.

7. Beauty Bakerie

Year founded: 2011

History: Before becoming a multi-million dollar beauty brand with a cult following, Beauty Bakerie was a dream of then teen mom and breast cancer survivor, Cashmere Nicole. She started the company in her kitchen with a motto of being “better not bitter” and a goal of creating products that were innovative and diverse. She has managed to do just that, and there’s still a lot more to come.

What you need: One of the premier products in the line, not to mention what you should start with if you’re unfamiliar with the brand, are the Matte Lip Whips ($20 each).

How it’s disrupting the category: The high-quality formulas are just as impressive as the product names and Instagram-friendly packaging.

Noteworthy news: Beauty Bakerie just launched an exclusive palette, the Milk & Honey Highlighter Palette ($48), in Riley Rose stores.

8. Charlotte by Charlotte Russe

Year founded: 2018

History: This shopping mall staple added a no-brainer brand extension this year when they introduced a curated collection of makeup that’s available both in-store and online.

What you need: Try the Make ’em Blush Cream Blush ($8) and The Finishing Touch Dewy Setting Spray ($9).

How it’s disrupting the category: Much has changed on the shopping mall front over past few years, but Charlotte Russe has managed to rebrand itself in a way that continues to meet the needs of savvy beauty consumers. They’ve crafted products that are high quality (even the fragrances in the collection are really impressive!) but still fit in with the budget-friendly price point that they are known for.

Noteworthy news: Look out for some bright pops of color (perfect for holiday looks) of the bestselling lip, nail, and eye products.

9. ModelCo

Year founded: 2003

History: It’s a pretty big deal for a makeup line, started fifteen years ago, to still be thriving and innovating the way that ModelCo has. What’s kept this brand top of the charts is their buzzworthy collabs with international celebrities and brands.

What you need: The Karl Lagerfeld + ModelCo lip balms ($15) are pretty darn cute.

How it’s disrupting the category: ModelCo has managed to achieved cult status through numerous celebrity ambassadors and collaborations including Elle Macpherson, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Hailey Baldwin and, most recently, Karl Lagerfeld.

Noteworthy news: There are a few new celebrity brand partnerships coming in 2019, so make sure to keep an eye on TrendMood for all the latest launch leaks.

10. Rituel de Fille

Year founded: 2014

History: This is one of those under-the-radar brands that once you discover it, you’ll be telling the world. It was founded by three sisters who were inspired by the magical side of natural ingredients. They formulate each product with the fewest ingredients possible, while still managing to pull off the richest, most mesmerizing colors and finishes.

What you need: The Lunaris and Solaris Rare Light Crème Luminizers ($58 for a set of two) were introduced as a limited-edition launch last year. They quickly sold out and once fans begged for their return, they were thankfully added to the permanent collection.

How it’s disrupting the category: Although natural makeup with clean or few ingredients have come a long way, you don’t often find formulas as dazzling as these. The entire line oozes ethereal appeal. It’s somewhat of a hidden gem on the makeup front.

Noteworthy news: Be on the lookout for new eye soots, another of the brand’s best selling items.

I think I have no less than 50 lip products in my makeup drawer — from glosses to oils, there’s just something about a tiny tube filled with a wash of color that I love.

What I don’t particularly love about my current lip product collection is most of the shades barely last on the lips. The mass amount of lipsticks and lip glosses I own typically require multiple rounds of reapplication if I want the color to stay on my lips, which is important to me for special occasions — especially ones I know I’ll be wanting to snap a few pictures of myself.

That’s why I was colored more than intrigued when my Instagram feed started booming with lip stain try-ons. The first lip stain to pave the way was none other than the magical Wonderskin peel-off lip stain that goes on blue, dries, then reveals an even pigment that’s meant to last all day. It honestly looked too good to be true.

There are many different kinds of lip stains on the market: peel-offs, markers, oils, and even glosses. The one thing they all have in common is their claims to be long-lasting, smudge-proof, transfer-proof, and water-proof. I put the claims of some of the most viral lip stains to the test by eating, drinking, and even sweating with them on my lips.

Scroll on to see which viral lip stains lived up to the hype, and which ones absolutely did not.

Covergirl Outlast Lip Stain

I love the marker format of this Covergirl lip stain. It’s super easy to use, and the precise applicator tip makes putting it on a total breeze. It helped me define my lip shape, which I feel is needed most times I want to wear a lip product because my natural lips don’t really have a defined edge.

The color I snagged was Canyon, and I must say, I am obsessed with it. It’s the perfect balance between a neutral, red, and terra cotta shade that I think is super complimentary to my skin tone.

Covergirl Outlast Lip Stain, before

Now, onto my first impressions wearing it. As I noted, the marker-like application tip was especially helpful for adding color and definition to the outline of my lips. It boasted an even and smooth wash of color once I was done lining. Disappointingly, it was not as smooth on the actual plush part of my lips. The result looked uneven and I felt like the color I had put on my lip line was a lot darker (which was not my desired look).

The texture of this lip stain didn’t stand out much to me. It simply dried down like a regular marker would — that being said, the lack of stickiness impressed me.

Covergirl Outlast Lip Stain, after

The real test, of course, was seeing if it could withstand things like eating and drinking. I wore the Covergirl lip stain to my family’s Christmas dinner, which was chockfull of snacks, apps, main courses, and cocktails.

Unfortunately, the lip stain barely held on through the first round of appetizers. The color had faded mostly from the plush part of my lips, though a few spots around my lip line had completely disappeared. I tried to minimize use of my napkin for the sake of the lip stain test, but there were a few moments I had to reach for it. Every time, I noticed that some of the lip stain had come off along with bits of food and drink. I definitely had to reapply it after dinner.

After a big bout of eating and drinking with it on, I have to rate the Covergirl lip stain a 2/5. While I absolutely loved the color and initial results, it did not keep its promise of being transfer-proof.

e.l.f. Glossy Lip Stain

I was beyond excited to try this lip stain from e.l.f. I had seen several demo videos on social media and loved how smooth the product looked, plus how it stayed on for influencers that put it to the test. A single tube is only $6, too, so the affordability aspect definitely had me hooked.

This pick comes in the unique form of a lip gloss and isn’t meant to dry down at all. While most other lip stains promise a full wash of color, this one is meant to leave a “sheer” and “healthy sheen” on the lips — which, honestly, feels more “me” than anything else, since I love me a natural look!

Meredith Holser

e.l.f. Glossy Lip Stain, before

Upon first application, I loved how satin-y the formula felt on my lips. The applicator tip was familiar to use and made putting it on precisely super easy. I decided to let the gloss sit on my lips for 5 minutes or so before blotting it a bit with some tissue (as many creators I saw online did).

While the glossy aspect was blotted away, the color stain wasn’t — amen! The shade Cinnamon Dreamz left an impressively flattering mauve-brown color on my lips. One thing I didn’t like about the first wear was I noticed the product sunk into dry patches on my lips (caused by my anxious habit of picking them — but that’s all just user error).

Meredith Holser

e.l.f. Glossy Lip Stain, after

I wore the e.l.f. lip stain to a friends’ dinner party to test out if it was really long-wearing. After a couple rounds of cocktails and a big feast, there was still a good amount of color on my lips. What stood out to me the most is that the color that stayed was still as even as if I had just freshly applied it — just sans glossy finish.

I was thoroughly surprised by e.l.f.’s glossy lip stain. The color, formula, and performance all lived up to the hype for me! All things considered, I have to grant it a 4/5.

Meredith Holser

Palladio Lip Stain

This lip stain by Palladio acted much like the one from Covergirl, thanks to its easy-to-use marker format. I tried the shade Mocha Cream and instantly fell in love with how it looked on my lips.

What I didn’t like, however, was how dry my lips felt after applying it. I knew that to keep the color on, I’d have to put up with drier-than-usual lips (the brand says the product works best alone), but it was a major bother to me in the sensory department.

Meredith Holser

Palladio Lip Stain, before

Much like the Covergirl lip stain, this formula from Palladio seemed to sink into the cracks on my lips and resulted in an uneven wash of color over time.

When it came to wearing this lip stain, I must say I was quite impressed with how long-lasting it was. I applied it right before sipping on my morning coffee on a WFH day, and I did not notice any transferring of the product onto my mug at all. I even tried to blot the lip stain on my hand, but nothing came off – which is so great.

Meredith Holser

Palladio Lip Stain, after

After several hours of wear (including a mildly sweaty morning walk), the Palladio lip stain was noticeably faded, but not as much as the other marker lip stain had. At this point, I'm thinking there's no real way to avoid fading, though maybe I just haven’t found my holy grail yet.

I was definitely surprised by the long-wearing potential of the Palladio lip stain. I loved the shade on my lips, though I wished it had applied and settled into my skin more evenly. I was also bothered by how dry my lips got when wearing it, so much so that I was distracted from my day. For this ,I rate the Palladio lip stain a 3/5.

I knew beauty trends were officially headed in a different direction when latte makeup dominated social media last year. Everything about it gave the appearance of soft features, making this millennial appreciate the ‘no makeup’ look more and more. And while I'm working on staying up-to-date on all the latest makeup trends, it also reminded me there are outdated trends that unintentionally age people...and definitelyneedto go.

Wanna look younger and more on-trend, too? From super metallic eyeshadow to contour that dominates your face, here are the 8 outdate makeup trends to leave in the early ‘90s to mid-2000s.

The 8 outdated makeup trends you need to stop ASAP!

1. Full Coverage Foundation

KoolShooters

There was a time where wearing full-coverage foundation was all the rage. From drugstore to high-end brands, it seems like they were consistently shoved in consumers’ faces to help us achieve a ‘full beat’ without sitting in a makeup artist’s chair. Also, those of us with dark spots or hyperpigmentation may have relied on them when we were in the thick of our skincare woes.

But these days, wearing too much foundation isn’t as popular as natural and skincare makeup are prioritized. If anything, more people are interested in wearing light-to-medium coverage foundation, skin tints, or tinted moisturizers.

2. Too Much Concealer

George Milton

It wasn’t until I watched this video by makeup artist Katie Jane Hughes that I realized some of us have been too heavy-handed with our concealers. There’s no reason we should be slapping products under the thinnest parts of our face, but we didn’t know any better!

Now that you know you can still get the desired effect with a minimal amount of concealer, don’t revert back to painting your under eyes!

3. 'Baking' Your Setting Powder

Chidi Young

Before you throw away your setting powders, step away from your makeup drawer and have a sit-down chat with me. There isn’t anything wrong with applying them to your face to help ‘set’ your foundation and concealer. However, spending over 10 minutes ‘baking’ your powder (AKA letting it sit untouched) doesn’t work for everyone.

It can lead to creased makeup which can derail your look, plus it’s a pain to correct when you’re halfway through your routine!

4. Overlining Lips

Kaboompics.com

I love a good lip liner, especially if it mirrors my favorite ‘90s makeup look. But, there’s such a thing as overdoing it. The key to lining your lips is following the natural flow of them. Going out of your way to draw above and under your lips’ lines comes off as comical and exaggerated. If anything, use a lip plumping gloss to help your lips look fuller.

5. Overtweezing Your Eyebrows

Getty Images

I don’t even have the words for this outdated makeup look besides wanting to say “no” 20 times in a row. But, I’ll bite and say why this shouldn’t be on your 2025 beauty moodboard.

Some people naturally have thinner eyebrows which is A-okay! However, purposely tweezing your eyebrows to smithereens is cringey. If you truly want to wear this look, here’s what you can do instead of tweezing:

  • Create a faux bleached look by applying a skin tone colored setting powder all over your brows.
  • Once they’ve ‘disappeared,’ take an eyebrow pencil or eyeliner to draw a thin line over them.

I’m…wondering what the ramifications of telling you how to do this will be, but only use go for this look if it’s a part of a themed party…like Halloween.

6. Exaggerated Highlighter On Cheeks

Milad Farhani

The shimmery look is in since it’s winter, but please don’t make it look like you dipped your cheeks into a vat of glitter. You can lightly dust highlighter onto your cheeks for a more natural glow that flows with the rest of your look. Otherwise you’ll look like a walking disco ball which could be the opposite of what you were going for.

7. Heavy Contour Or Bronzer

Laura Garcia

I know the ‘sculpted’ look is popular, but too much contour or bronzer can overpower the rest of your makeup and face. While it’s not impossible to fix if you do it by mistake, using the wrong shade of contour or bronzer may still peep through no matter how much you try to buff it out.

When in doubt, be gentle with your contour or bronzer application!

8. Incredibly Matte Makeup

Nataliia Yatsiuk

Matte makeup that didn’t budge was the ‘It Girl’ look for oily and combination skin girls! We thought it was the answer to our skin’s incessant need to hydrate our faces instead of actually using skincare products that focused on combatting that issue (psst…Vitamin C serums help!).

But now’s the time to break up with this look for good for one reason: dewy skin looks healthier.

While we have you here, learn about the outdated shoe trends you shouldn't be wearing in 2025 either.

After spending decades in the entertainment industry, some celebs like Pamela Anderson have opted for a makeup-free look. No one can forget when she stunned photographers right before Paris Fashion Week's Vivienne Westwood show last year by rocking a bare face. She told Vogue France, she wasn't thinking about not "wearing any makeup." However, she didn't want to "compete with the clothes" she was wearing. She felt "freedom" from not trying to "be the prettiest girl in the room" which speaks volumes to us!

Now, Pamela continues to embrace the no-makeup life — and not only does she look gorgeous, but she seems SO happy! The star shared recently how this lifestyle change impacts her day-to-day, and it's honestly incredibly relatable. Here's what she had to say!

Here's what Pamela Anderson just said about adopting a no-makeup life!

www.instagram.com

1. It saves her a lot of time.

Pamela Anderson stopped by the Live with Kelly and Markshow to talk about filming The Last Showgirl, her childhood, and how not wearing makeup has been beneficial for her. While her makeup-free clip from the episode isn't available on YouTube, PEOPLE reports hosts Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos asking her how her decision has changed her life.

Ripa started with, "You don't travel with a glam squad. How liberating is that for you," while Consuelos followed with, "And how much time have you gotten back?"

The former Baywatch star said she's "saved a lot of time" and admitted that her sons "used to say that I spent half my life in a makeup chair."

2. She feels more focused in general.

Pamela Anderson also admitted things feel easier for her in general. "I feel like I could focus better when I did the film, too." And her life outside of that? She said she's "gotten out of wearing makeup and it's been fun."

It's interesting because Kelly Ripa shared she's been inspired by Pamela Anderson's makeup-free choice. She remembers not wearing makeup for a short while and said to herself, "'Pamela Anderson is a genius." Kelly even thought for a moment, "This is the way to live." We're so here for it!

www.instagram.com

3. She lives for a glam moment, but appreciates simplicity now.

Pamela's all for being makeup-free now, but she's not bashing glam moments. She actually "loved it" because "it's fun when you're new in the business and you get all this attention." She's just at a point where she's "done that" and wants to "simplify and keep it low key."

She really does "love being elegant, sophisticated" but has found what "works best" for her.

Do you hear wedding bells? Because after Tom Holland and Zendaya's engagement, Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco's engagement, and those Suki Waterhouse and Robert Pattinson marriage rumors, it appears Hollywood does. And after all those Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift engagement rumors, Travis just spilled on his ideal wedding timeline — that's right, it appears our favorite IRL rom-com couple could be thinking about tying the knot!

Here's what Travis Kelce had to say about his least favorite time of year to get married.

Travis Kelce wants to avoid THIS wedding season for one reason.

@britandco#greenscreen do you think any of these will come true?! #taylorswift#traviskelce#tayvis#travistaylor#thealchemy#prpredictions♬ the alchemy ts sped up - Swiftie_Jean-Alex 😁✨

On a new episode of the New Heights podcast he hosts with brother Jason, Travis Kelce revealed he would like to avoid an autumn wedding day. And the reason is literally so on brand it makes me laugh.

After a listener revealed over the phone that his girlfriend wants to schedule their wedding during football season, Travis admits that "I actually don't know people who've gotten married in the fall."

"My friends always do it in the summer," he says. "I've seen weddings everywhere but the fall. So, I'm not sure if the fall is a good wedding season."

The weather of an autumn wedding (not to mention the incredible aesthetic of the wedding photos!!) have always made it seem so dreamy. Plus, I've attended more than one summer wedding (some on the beach!) and it can get toasty under the summer sun. Spring then, Travis?

Travis' comments come after he responded to rumors that he'd pop the question to girlfriend Taylor Swift. During the June 1 Big Slick Celebrity Weekend's onstage comedy sketch, Ted Lasso star Jason Sudeikis asked Travis about a potential engagement. "Hey Travis, real talk, OK, just the guys here," Jason says. "When are you going to make an honest woman out of her?"

"Guys," Travis says, "you're really pushing it." It's a pretty kind way to say back off!! I'm excited for whenever Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce tell us they're engaged — should they choose to share at all.
