These New Netflix Originals Will Be Your Binge-Watch Faves in July 2017

For every show Netflix has unfortunately had to cancel recently, there are new shows to take their place. The investment in original content certainly seems to pay off, with the recent (though controversial) hit 13 Reasons Why even breaking popularity records and becoming a phenomenon in its own right.

Your binge-watching schedule is probably already pretty jam-packed, but if you have room to add a buzzed-about new show, check out the Netflix originals we’re sure you’ll be obsessed with in July 2017.

To the Bone (July 14):To the Bone is already shaping up to be another controversial hit for Netflix, in the vein of 13 Reasons Why. Lily Collins plays Ellen, a 20-year-old woman who is battling anorexia and has been through several treatments, only to find them ineffective. Collins, who herself has struggled with the eating disorder, lost weight to play the role, and some people feel the depiction will be triggering for viewers who are living with or have a history of anorexia or bulimia. Collins has revealed that she actually got *complimented* for her weight loss for the role, proving that, controversial or not, the conversation is an important one.

Friends from College (July 14): This is a show most of us will be able to relate to in some way or another. Friends from College centers around a group of friends who went to Harvard together and are now trying to figure out adulting while still holding on to the past. The cast alone makes this one worth checking out: Keegan-Michael Key, Cobie Smulders, Fred Savage, Jae Suh Park, and others make up the group of intertwined (see: DRAMA) old friends.

Ozark (July 21): Jason Bateman plays a seemingly normal financial adviser who’s secretly handling the books for one of Mexico’s biggest drug cartels. When he and his wife (played by Laura Linney) flee their Chicago suburb for the Lake of the Ozarks, it quickly becomes clear just how much trouble they’ve gotten themselves into. Eep!

Daughters of Destiny (July 28): This four-part documentary series is a little different than the scripted dramas and comedies above. Directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Vanessa Roth, Daughters of Destiny profiles India’s Shanti Bhavan school, which, since 1997, has provided free education for some of India’s poorest and most underrepresented children. The series will chronicle the lives of five girls, ranging in age from 7 to 23, over seven years of filming. It’s sure to provide new perspective.

  • Actress Nicola Coughlan teases "very fun" Bridgerton season 4 at the Time 100 Gala.
  • She says Penelope Featherington & Colin Bridgerton are having "the best time together" as a newly married couple.
  • Coughlan also teases future queer storyline with Francesca Bridgerton and Michaela Stirling.

Bridgerton fans all over the world were thrilled to see Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) FINALLY get her happy ending with Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) — and swap her Featherington yellows & greens for Bridgerton blue. And no one is having more fun with newly married Polin than Coughlan herself!

Liam Daniel/Netflix

“It’s very fun to be playing a happily married person with a very cute baby,” she told Good Morning America at the Time 100 Next Gala in New York City on October 9. “It feels like they went through all their strife last time. So they get to come back and just be in love and have the best time together.”

Both Phoebe Dynevor and Simone Ashley saw a decrease in screen time after their characters got married and had their first child, but Penelope has played a prominent role in the series since the beginning. It sounds like the show could make an unexpected exception and continue to feature her (and the baby!) even though her love story has concluded. At least, that's what I'm hoping!

While Penelope and Colin will be busy enjoying their happily ever after, Coughlan says Luke Thompson and Yerin Ha are "hard at work being our leads this time," adding, "they're doing an amazing, amazing job."

And while it's no secret fans of the show have been hoping for a queer plotline, Coughlan revealed just how much the cast has wanted it too. "I love Bridgerton because it's a show that tells all different types of love stories," she says. “I just know that it’s going to be done so well by Hannah [Dodd] and Masali [Baduza],” she adds. “Whenever their time comes, they’re going to be ready, and they’re going to knock it out of the park.”

The end of Bridgerton season 3 introduced us (and Dodd's Francesca) to Michaela Stirling, a gender-bent twist on her love interest from the books, Micheal Stirling. "It makes perfect sense that Michael Stirling is Michaela Stirling in the show," one X user tweeted. "There's no way a man could ever deliver what Michael Stirlin was in the books. Only a woman can serve like this."

Ahead of the junior season of the hit show, Nicola Coughlan exclusively revealed to Brit + Co that she loved seeing Penelope come out of her shell, and gain more confidence, throughout Bridgerton season 3.

“It felt really different this time, I think just because she's finally a grown up and I love coming back to a show and playing a character again, and finding the new sides to them," Coughlan says. "She's becoming a woman and finding her self-worth — that side of her I really loved getting to play. It was great."

And she didn't just find her self-confidence — she found the courage to ditch Lady Whistledown once and for all, stepping into the spotlight just the way she is. And it doesn't hurt that she looks dang good doing it.

"The glow!" Coughlan's Big Moodco-star Lydia West adds. "You look so stunning. [I love] the different wigs."

"When the wig comes off, it's so sad because you just like under a wig, you just look like a little wet rat and it's all your hair is just all slicked back," Coughlan jokes. Well, it was a Rat Boyfriend summer — maybe it can be a Rat Girlfriend fall?

Contemporary classic adaptations provide us with so much nuance and detail that make the original story even more powerful. Audiences loved the way Greta Gerwig's Little Women brought all four March sisters to life, and Netflix's Anne with an E became so popular that when the show was canceled after season 3, 1.7 million fans signed a petition to revive the series.

And the newest movie based on a book is going to be one we think about forever — and not just because of its cast. Emerald Fennell (who you'll recognize from The Crown and her work as writer & director on Satburn) is adapting Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights and Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi just joined the cast!

The book, published in 1847, continues to grip readers, and it's become the blueprint for moody complexity — just like Emerald Fennell's Promising Young Woman, which won the Oscar for Best Screenplay thanks to its scathing look at sexual assault. Well, the Em's are coming together for this new adaptation. Here's everything we know about the new Wuthering Heights movie.

Is Wuthering Heights going to be in theaters?

Focus Features

It appears director Emerald Fennell and producer Margot Robbie are pushing for a theatrical release, which is why they've reportedly turned down a Netflix offer of $150 million so far, according to a recent edition of Puck's newsletter "What I'm Hearing."

Despite the fact Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos said theatrical releases are "just not our business," and the company has stuck to at-home streaming instead, they did break that pattern for Knives Out: Glass Onion in 2022. According to the New York Times, the movie appeared in around 600 theaters the day before Thanksgiving, but left a week later ahead of its December 23 debut on the streamer.

Co-CEO Reed Hastings told The Hollywood Reporter that keeping the movie in theaters could have made Netflix more money, but later said they just wanted to "break through the noise" and get movie lovers excited for the film to come to Netflix.

All that to be said, Margot Robbie (whose Barbie made over $1 billion worldwide) and Emerald Fennell (whose Promising Young Woman nabbed her an Oscar win and two other nominations) know how to capture the imaginations of movie lovers everywhere. And it could definitely be in their favor to stick to a theatrical release. Stay tuned for official news on where you can watch Wuthering Heights!

Wuthering Heights Cast

The Wuthering Heights movie will be led by Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie as Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw, respectively. Margot will also produce with her production company LuckyChap, which worked behind the scenes on Emerald Fennell's Saltburn and Promising Young Woman.

While some fans were initially excited about the casting, others were concerned about the fact that in the book, Heathcliff is described as "dark skinned." He also tells Nelly that, "I wish I had light hair and a fair skin, and was dressed, and behaved as well, and had a chance of being as rich as he will be!" Um, it looks like Jacob Elordi definitely has fair skin to me.

"Heathcliff is described as a dark-skinned brown man in the book and a major plot point is that he was subjected to racist abuse by his adopted family," one tweet (which is up to 8 million views) says. "But yeah sure Jacob Elordi is perfect!"

Another says, "Film studios will say 'We are committed to diverse casting' and then cast Jacob Elordi to play Heathcliff, one of the more famous people of color in literature, whose race is crucial to both his character and the story."

Check back here to see who will play characters like Edgar Linton, Nelly Dean, Isabella Linton, and Lockwood.

Wuthering Heights Plot

Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights follows the Earnshaws and the Lintons, who are living in the Yorkshire Moors in the 1880s. Their lives change forever when the Earnshaws take in Heathcliff. Like any good dramatic novel, passion lies beneath proper connections, marriages, and societal expectations — and despite Catherine and Heathcliffe's feelings for each other, they have to choose between security and love.
