Whether you're craving
something indulgent or a
healthy snack, these new foods and drinks let you quell tummy rumbles. We taste-tasted dozens of summer 2018 releases to bring you the best of what you can find stocked on grocery store shelves. We guarantee you’ll discover at least one thing you cannot wait to add to your shopping cart.
Jif Power Ups Granola Clusters Classic Peanut Butter ($4): Imagine creamy Jif peanut butter rolled in crunchy, cinnamon-y granola pieces, and you have these clusters. Though they’re totally kid-friendly, adults love ‘em too.
Birch Benders Paleo Waffles ($4): What if you could have waffles while working on your Paleo diet? Birch Benders makes that possible with fluffy-on-the-inside, crispy-on-the-outside freezer waffles that hail from Belgium.
Weekday Warriors Protein Joe ($27): Many of us eat while commuting to work or the gym, which is why Weekday Warriors invented this all-in-one coffee protein powder that will fuel you on the go. Though it sounds sorta weird, it tastes just like an iced latte only packed with 20 grams of grass-fed whey protein and 3 grams of MCT coconut oil to fill you up.
Hope Hummus Spicy Mango Guacamole ($5): The tropical fruit seems like the most unlikely addition to guac, but its sweetness helps tame the fiery heat. You can’t help but keep dippin’ for more, chip after chip.
Babybel Cheese & Cracker ($4 for 3): It’s oh-so satisfying to peel open one of the wax coatings of Babybel semi-soft cheese. Now, we get the added bonus of serving it along Ritz-like buttery crackers. Mmm.
Gimme Seaweed Thins Sriracha Almond ($4): Flaky seaweed nori snacks are sandwiched between almond slivers and a spicy-sweet brittle. The combination of flavors and textures makes it impossible not to finish a bag in one sitting.
Sabra Barbecue Hummus With Jackfruit and Smoked Paprika ($6): This tastes exactly as the name implies. The smoky barbecue flavors surely came through. We enjoyed scooping it onto tortilla chips and pairing with guac.
Walmart W Wines ($10-$16 a bottle): Beyond the beautiful labels and affordable price range, we loved the flavors of these worldly wines (from Italy, France, and California in varietals like rosé, sparkling rosé, chianti, and cabernet sauvignon) that appeal to every tastebud. We found the Italian Red Blend to be the crowd favorite for its rich, smooth berry taste.
Tcho Bites Triple Berry Chocolates ($6): When chocolate-covered strawberries aren’t realistically happening, sub in these chocolate coins with freeze-dried berries swirled in. This dessert begs to be paired with a rich, sweeter red wine or sangria.
Trader Joe's Dark Chocolate Mint Coins ($2): Umm, hello all-natural Thin Mints. TJ's has officially joined the copycat cookie bandwagon. You may be very familiar with its Joe-Joe's (aka Oreos) and chocolate-filled Belgian cookies (aka Milano's), but have you tried these little mini chocolate shortbread snacks, enrobed in dark chocolate seasoned with peppermint oil? Stash them in the freezer if you know what's good for you.
Just Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough ($6): Just's refrigerated cookie dough (that’s free of eggs and dairy, shh!) is back! It tastes as good (if not better) than homemade and can be snacked on raw or baked up into chewy, caramelized cookies. Don’t forget to try the rainbow-sprinkled Birthday Cake flavor too. Currently, you’ll find them in Sprouts and Publix, and they'll soon be on Jet.com.
Wild Ophelia Confetti Cake Chocolate Bars ($4): Though you can select up to four of your fave flavors (choose from Confetti Cake, Cookies n' Cream, Chocolate Dipped Strawberry, and Hazelnut Cocoa Toast) online for $16, you can buy the individual bars at Whole Foods Market. Our top pick is the Confetti Cake, a white chocolate bar with plenty of rainbow jimmy sprinkles. Snap off a square, and pretend like it’s your birthday.
Nilla Banana Pudding Flavored Cereal ($4): Remember Oreo O’s? Well, Walmart is back with this new flavor that basically tastes like banana-y Nilla Wafer Cookie Crisp with little marshmallow pieces. It’s indulgent ’90s nostalgia at its finest. Snack on them dry like trail mix. Or, pour milk over the "cookies," and dive in to the best bowl o' cereal you've had in this decade.
Wandering Bear Coffee Cold Brew ($4): This brand uses organic coffee and cold water to brew one of the smoothest packaged coffees we’ve tasted. You can always stash the cardboard box tap in the fridge at home, but we’re partial to the on-the-go 11-ounce bottles. Be warned — it has 25 milligrams of caffeine per ounce, so you will be hella buzzed by one serving.
Rx Nut Butter: Peanut Butter ($2): The makers of the almond-date-egg-white-bars are now making actual nut butters, including peanut butter (our fave) and almond butter. This original PB has the best texture; it's a little runny and a little gritty. The packets keep it emulsified too, so you won’t have to worry about massaging clumps of peanuts into separated oil as per usual with natural peanut butters. Did we mention each serving has nine grams of protein? Heck yes, RX!
Bolthouse Farms Non-Dairy Unsweetened Protein Plant Milk ($5): The latest offering from Bolthouse Farms provides 10 grams of plant protein and over 100 percent of your daily value of vitamin B12. Vegans, rejoice! Though the entire line is tasty, the unsweetened is where it’s at. Sip it solo, splash it into coffee, or blend it into a smoothie.
Smart Sweets Sour Gummy Bears ($20 for 6 bags): Have you ever wondered, "What if sugar-free Sour Patch Kids existed?" These Smart Sweets are pretty darn close to your dreams. A bag of these chewy candies, which contain no artificial flavors or sweeteners, will only set you back 90 calories with three grams of sugar. These aren't completely empty calories, either. They contain 28 grams of fiber. That's like, the equivalent of a huge head of broccoli.
Enlightened Movie Night Ice Cream ($6): We’re not sure we feel enlightened after eating a pint of this nice-r cream, but we certainly enjoyed every bite of the popcorn-flavored ice cream with chocolate bites and buttery caramel swirl. It’s only 90 calories per serving, so go ahead and serve it (guilt-free) alongside some actual popcorn on your next movie night.
Living Intentions Malted Maple Superfood Nut Blend ($6): This addictive medley contains sprouted walnuts, raw cashews, white mulberries, and live probiotics (1 billion!) coated in maple syrup, mesquite powder, and spices like cinnamon and nutmeg. Snack on the nutrition-rich nuggets solo, or sprinkle them atop yogurt, oatmeal, or salads.
Halo Top Peaches & Cream ($6): You know peach yogurt? That’s what the newest flavor from Halo Top reminds us of. It's just tangy enough to keep you coming back for more. As a *bonus*, it's stuffed with 20 grams of protein and 320 calories per pint. Yes, summer’s looking really splendid after all.
Smashcrispy Strawberries & Cream ($5): Smashmallow now makes cereal treats! As to be expected, it doesn't hold back on the sticky-but-marvelous marshmallow. The top is studded with freeze-dried strawberries and sugar granules.
Skinny Dipped Dark Chocolate Cocoa Almonds ($4): This brand has nailed chocolate-covered almonds (TJ’s, WATCH YOUR BACK). As the name implies, the toasted almonds are covered in a thin coating of dark chocolate, but that doesn’t mean you’re sad about it. Per serving, the nuts contain only six grams of sugar with seven grams of protein. Woohoo!
Sambazon Superfruit Acai Bites ($7): Acai sorbet is now dipped in dark chocolate… mmhm! Don’t worry; these little bites are organic, vegan, dairy-free, and non-GMO, and they have only four grams of sugar, so you can go to town.
Breyers Vanilla Cupcake Delights ($5): If cake batter ice cream’s your jam, then you need to get involved in a pint of this sprinkle-filled light ice cream that truly does resemble frozen vanilla cupcake batter. It’s only 310 calories per pint, so you can go ahead and scoop that extra spoonful.
Yasso Chocolate Peanut Butter Chip ($4): Of all the goods we’ve gotten at the Brit + Co office, none have gone quicker than these new 100-ish calorie treats. So if you see these new frozen Greek yogurt bars in the freezer section of Walmart, RUN. Though we’re a little bummed the bars don’t look exactly like the packaging, we instantly fell in love with the slightly sweet, slightly tangy taste and crunchy bits throughout. Try the pistachio if PB's not your thang.
McConnell’s Dairy-Free Eureka Lemon & Marionberries ($12): Okay, before you freak out about the price tag, hear us out. This ice cream tastes so friggin’ good, you’ll forget about your credit card for a minute. Marionberries are sort of like blackberries, and the flavor resembles a fruity, creamy lemonade. McConnell’s has come up with something called “MCC’s P3 Blend” as the base, which is a mix of pure pea protein and water. Tapioca and coconut oil also contribute to the creamy, slightly chewy texture.
Amy's Meatless Pepperoni Pizza Snacks ($6): If you grew up microwaving dozens of Totino's Pepperoni Pizza Rolls, you'll definitely appreciate this healthier veggie option. The list of ingredients is completely pronounceable, and the snacks aren't greasy and deep-fried like their '90s counterpart. Though meatless, the house-made pepperoni, a blend of textured wheat gluten, Cannellini beans, and tofu, tastes like the real thing both in texture and seasoning. Don't be surprised if you down a whole package of these in one sitting. Shhh, we won't tell. Amy's also released another pepperoni product: Meatless Pepperoni Mac & Cheese with an oozy, sharp cheddar sauce that's so dang tasty, you can't help but scrape any remaining bits from the sides of the bowl.
GT’s Watermelon Wonder ($3): This drink tastes like freshly pressed watermelon juice mixed with fizzy water; it’s summer refreshment at its finest. If you’re not a big fan of funky fermented flavors, you’ll appreciate this kombucha, as it’s on the sweeter side.
365 AlmondMilk Chocolate Chip Peanut Butter Swirl ($5): Gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegan, this frozen dessert, part of Whole Foods' 365 line, tastes almost indistinguishable from dairy ice cream both in texture and taste. How do they do it?! Of the entire line of seven new flavors, we adored the CCPPS (above), naturally flavored Mint Chocolate Chip, and Berry Chantilly Cake. Let us all have tasty ice cream choices, no matter what the dietary restriction!
Waterloo Mango ($6 / 12 cans): Perhaps we can’t travel somewhere tropical this summer, but we can sip on something that tastes like we're beachside. Though there’s no sugar,
Waterloo’s latest flavor resembles sweet ripe mango. Your tastebuds won’t know what hit ‘em.
Red Rock Deli Himalayan Pink Salt ($4): Frito-Lay owns this Australian chip brand, and once you discover it, you’ll be hooked. These thick chips burst with true potato flavor thanks to the generous sprinkling of Himalayan pink salt. Don't mind if we do take these to our next barbecue!
High Brew’s Creamy Cappuccino and Protein ($3): The next time you're road-tripping, keep your eyes peeled for cans of this cold-brew coffee that boasts 12 grams of protein, 3 grams of fiber, and about 120 milligrams of caffeine (that's about two cups of coffee). The creamy, smooth taste and slight sweetness (14 grams) make it one of our faves on the market right now. If sugar's not your thang, the brand's Black & Bold cold brew is worth picking up.
Lundberg Organic Sprouted Rice ($4): As longtime fans of Lundberg rice, we knew its new line of sprouted flavored rices would taste good, but we weren't prepared for HOW good. For lazy nights where you need to eat ASAP, toss it in the Instant Pot for 22 minutes. Our favorite flavors from the line include Toasted Coconut Rice (best paired with stir-fried veg and tofu) and Chile Verde (cook it along with a can of drained beans and, upon serving, stir in some spinach until wilted).
Trader Joe's Spicy Cheese Crunchies ($2): It's like TJ's knows us or something. For years, we've wondered why they haven't created a Flamin' Hot Cheetos knock-off, and now, the wait is over. These baked corn snacks feature real cheddar cheese dust and
muy caliente spices for your guilt-free snacking pleasure.
Coco-Thins Cashew Cookies, Salted Caramel ($4): Imagine paper-thin, crispy coconut macaroons, and that's what you'll find in these cashew-based cookies. This clean dessert doesn't contain an ounce of sugar, but the blonde coconut sugar gives it a caramel-y taste that's true to its name. Thank goodness a serving size of these is eight cookies (160 calories), because you'll find yourself going back for more.
Hi-Chew Açaí ($1): Studded with chia seeds for crunch, the latest release from
Hi-Chew tastes like tropical grape, if there ever was such a thing. It’s not quite like açaí, but we’re okay with that.
Trader Joe's Gone Berry Crazy! ($2): This release honestly has us doing a dance in the TJ's freezer aisle. Remember the dark chocolate-coated frozen bananas? Well, this is the same concept but with strawberries instead. Now you can treat yourself to chocolate-covered strawberries any time for the fraction of the price. TJ's recommends putting them on ice cream, but really, these little nuggets do not need to adorn anything.
Hail Merry Salted Chocolate Protein Bites ($36 for 12 packs): The newest release from Hail Merry has people *flocking* to order 'em up, because who doesn't love the idea of getting 10 grams of protein while noshing on dessert? We can assure you these bites taste legitimately like nutty brownies with a salty finish.
Uncle Ben's Ready Rice Long Grains & Black Beans With Cilantro Lime Flavor ($2): When you have 90 seconds to shovel in some food during lunch (we feel you), turn to these flavored rice packs from Uncle Ben's. There's no funny stuff in here — just long-grain rice, black beans, and cilantro-lime for your delight.
