8 Reasons Why It’s Actually Okay to Ditch Your Bridal Party

Weddings have traditionally been about, well, tradition, which can be stressful — especially when those customs are expensive or impractical. The #1 headache from couples usually deals with the wedding party. Of course your nearest and dearest want to celebrate you, but the logistics of multiple wedding events and the associated costs often adds up to stress for all involved, including you. After all, they wouldn’t have made Bridesmaids if having (or being in) a bridal party was a breeze. The good news is, there’s no reason why you can’t have the best of both worlds with this new wedding trend: Your friends can still support you without being your bridal party. If Sophia Vergara and Whitney Port’s wedding traditions didn’t include it, yours don’t have to either. And yes, you still get to have that epic bachelorette party! Here are eight reasons why it’s okay to ditch the bridal party, and how to do it without losing all your friends.

1. You don’t have to choose one Maid of Honor or Best Man: You have three or more BFFs, and each one could be your Maid of Honor. Or, Jill is your oldest friend but you’re closer now to Sarah. No matter how you slice it, choosing a single “best of best friends” can cause some tension in your other friendships. Sit all the candidates down for one-on-one chats or Facetime to explain that while they will always be bridal party status in your heart, you’d rather they just focus on having a blast at the wedding as guests.

2. No tough cuts to the team: Your squad is large and you have a lot of cousins and siblings. Unless you want a 40-person bridal party, some cuts will have to be made. In some cases, it would be easier to cut off one of your own arms to avoid that family drama. The upside to not having a formal bridal party is you can still ask people to help out, and they are likely to say yes with enthusiasm.

3. Everyone can help out more: If your friends don’t have to spend the whole wedding day looking great for photos, they have more time and ability to help out behind the scenes. You can ask your friends to be ushers for the ceremony, DJ or emcee during the reception, drive the getaway car and so on. Just like that, you’ve got a lot more budget-friendly help that your friends are sure to jump at.

4. No awkward talks about finances: We all know being in a wedding is expensive. Odds are you’ll have some income disparity among the group. Nothing ruins a shower or bachelorette faster than half the group not being able to afford it. Take the pressure off and just plan some quality bonding time with your nearest and dearest. Brunch, camping, spa day or a good old-fashioned sleepover are great options.

5. Save hundreds on the wedding: Having a bridal party is the one money-suck everyone forgets about. Not only do the bridesmaids and groomsmen have to shell out for the shower, bachelor/bachelorette parties and wedding outfits, but it also costs the bride and groom money too. The hotel suites for getting ready, hair and makeup, bouquets, boutonnieres, bridal party gifts and transportation all add up to lots of cash that could be better spent elsewhere (like maybe the honeymoon).

6. Make the wedding day last longer: Everyone talks about the wedding day rushing by in a flash. That is less likely to happen if you have some downtime to yourself. Maybe have your makeup, hair and dressing time with your bestie or just with Mom. Then invite your closest friends to the first look photo session. They’ll get a preview of the dress, have time for a quick mimosa and a group hug.

7. Skip the rehearsal dinner: Without a bridal party, there’s no need! This is a great help for anyone who would have to take off an extra day of work for the rehearsal, and it’s at least another couple hundred bucks off your wedding budget. Instead, how about meeting up in the hotel the night before the big day and go Dutch on drinks and apps — you’ll actually be able to spend more time with everyone.

8. No sudden line-up changes: Your groomsman breaks a leg skiing in Aspen over the holidays, or your MOH finds herself pregnant soon after accepting the job as your right hand. Life happens, and sometimes it can really screw with wedding planning. Keeping your variables to a minimum will help you sleep at night and also build in room for life’s little complications that are bound to crop up.

27 Dresses is a fun story until you think about how much Jane (Kathryn Heigl) spent for each and every one of those weddings. There are engagement parties, bridal showers, bachelorette parties, bridesmaid dresses, shoes, jewelry — I mean the list of costly responsibilities goes on and on and on. Imagine doing that 27 times.

Wedding events aren't just a casual affair anymore either — the financial obligations for wedding guests and bridal parties continue to rise steadily. According to a 2023 study from The Knot, the average cost of a bridesmaid's dress is $130. Business Insider reports that you can expect to spend $1,200 for bachelorette parties on average. Just being a wedding guest alone has an average price tag of $580, according to another study by The Knot. Suddenly, from your dress to the destination bach to the delicate (and likely expensive) stemware you got the couple as a gift, you're potentially spending thousands of dollars on a wedding that's not even your own.

And while you likely love the bride asking you to be in her wedding party very much...is there a way you can politely decline? Especially if you're trapped for cash or trying to save for a major financial goal? HerFirst100k's Tori Dunlap would like to think so! And it doesn't have to be this friendship-altering event either. With Dunlap's tips, you should be well on your way to the happy couple's good graces without paying an arm and a leg to earn it.

When turning down a bridesmaid offer, Dunlap suggest using the "sandwich method" here — AKA saying something complimentary, giving the bad news, and ending on another positive, complimentary note. Seems simple enough, right?

She suggest saying, "I'm so excited for your wedding! Thank you so much for thinking of me! I am so honored. However, at this time I really can't afford the commitment of being a bridesmaid, but I would love to support you in any other way I can."

With this phrasing Dunlap says you're accomplishing three key things:

  1. Setting expectations
  2. Validating the friendship
  3. Maintaining your own financial boundaries
In doing this, you're ensuring that you've done and said everything you can kindly and upfront so that you don't leave the bride on the hook or disappointed. This should keep your relationship in tact — and if it doesn't, that maybe says more about the situation than your polite decline. Regardless, now you don't have to worry about going into debt for someone else's wedding, so you're able to spend mindfully and maintain your personal finance goals.

The Wicked moviepress tour has been a truly beautiful thing to witness. Ariana Grande & Cynthia Erivo have cried in almost every interview because of how much they love their characters and each other, and it seems like working on this project really did heal something in them. So, after the sincerity of their interviews, I was really taken aback when I learned Dax Shepard had Cynthia Erivo on his Armchair Expert podcast...and chose to ask her about going to the bathroom?

Keep reading for what Dax Shepard had to say and, like me, wonder why he asked it in the first place.

On an episode of his Armchair Expert podcast, Dax Shepard asked Oscar nominee Cynthia Erivo if her famously long nails make it difficult to wipe when she goes to the bathroom. “I knew you would ask that,” Cynthia responds, saying “no one’s afraid” to ask such an intimate question.

“My answer is that nobody uses just their fingers to wipe their backside,” she says. “You use tissue, correct? And you wipe!”

When he asked if she was annoyed or offended by the question, Cynthia admits she's "annoyed by it."

“I'm, like, 'Come on, guys,' ” she says. “But I get it, but it's also, like, ‘I'm a functioning adult, and I've never walked around smelling like, you know…'"

Theo Wargo/Getty Images

The actress has proved she's nothing if not honest this fall, going viral for saying "thank goodness" the actresses who auditioned with her for Glinda didn't land the role and for vocalizinghow much a fan edit of the Wicked movie poster offended her (she later admitted she should have texted her friends instead of posting on social media).

Now, this question was very weird to me for a few reasons. Not only does it have nothing to do with the film, but Dax asking Cynthia about her bathroom habits gives me a similar feeling to the one I got watching that male interviewer ask Scarlett Johansson about her underwear during Avengers: Age of Ultron press. Just...what is the reason? Plus, the fact Cynthia has also been vocal about how much she values her nails as a part of Black culture only makes the question (and the fact the nails feel like, no pun intended, the butt of the joke) weirder.

"Here’s the thing," Cynthia tells Dax before switching topics. "There are people who do not have nails who need to check how they’re wiping." Get 'em girl!

Her newest movie Babygirl comes from A24, and the steamy drama is mixing work and pleasure. Pour yourself a glass of wine for this one, folks.

Scroll down to learn more about Babygirl — and to watch the HOT new trailer!

What is the plot of Babygirl?

A24

Babygirl Plot

In Babygirl, Nicole Kidman plays Romy, a powerful CEO struggling to hold her perfect persona together. Her marriage to Jacob has never provided with much pleasure, despite the fact he's caring and artistic. But when Romy meets a young intern named Samuel, and feels immediately drawn to him, the two begin a torrid affair.

And filming scenes with Harry Dickinson got so intense, Kidman said she literally had to take breaks. “There were times when we were shooting where I was like, ‘I don’t want to orgasm any more,'” she told the Sun. “Don’t come near me. I hate doing this. I don’t care if I am never touched again in my life!”

But the fact the movie was made by women empowered Kidman — and gave her a sense of freedom. "Doing this subject matter in the hands of the woman that wrote the script, that's directing it and is a really great actress herself — we became one in a weird way, which I'd never had with a director before," Kidman says in a statement. "When you're working with a woman on this subject matter, you can share everything with each other.”

"I really decided in the beginning, I want to make a sexual film, just as sexual as all these films that I've always admired so much," adds writer-director-producer Halina Reijn, "but now I'm going to do it completely through female eyes. What does that mean and what does that look like?”

When is the Babygirl release date?

A24

Babygirl Release Date

Babygirl made its premiere at the Venice Film Festival, but you can watch the movie in theaters December 25, 2024.

Who's in the Babygirl cast?

A24

Babygirl Cast

The cast of Babygirl includes Nicole Kidman, Harris Dickinson, Sophie Wilde, and Antonio Banderas.

What has Nicole Kidman said about making Babygirl?

Amy Sussman/Getty Images

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Nicole Kidman revealed Babygirl is the most "exposing" film she's done because she's “made some films that are pretty exposing, but not like this.”

“It left me raggedm" Kidman says. "At some point I was like, I don’t want to be touched. I don’t want to do this anymore, but at the same time I was compelled to do it...This is something you do and hide in your home videos. It is not a thing that normally is going to be seen by the world.”

“I felt very exposed as an actor, as a woman, as a human being,” she continues. “I had to go in and go out like, I need to put my protection back on. What have I just done? Where did I go? What did I do?”

What does babygirl energy mean?

A24

"Babygirl" is a term of endearment that's usually applied to a man (you've probably heard it describe Pedro Pascal or Paul Mescal). When someone is giving babygirl energy, they're kind, cute, and disarming. And considering Babygirl plays with power dynamics, we could be guessing who the "babygirl" in question is up until the very end.
