7 Newborn Things That Are Totally Not Worth Freaking Over

Your post-baby day brain is filled with hundreds of “What if’s.” What if baby’s pooping too much? What if she’s not pooping enough? What if she’s sleeping for too long at a time? What if she won’t sleep at all? And, why is she crying ALL of the time? We’re here to tell you — take a deep breath and relax! We’ve put together this list of totally normal baby behaviors that you don’t need to stress out about at all.

1. Poop Color: You open up your baby’s diaper and find — WHAT? Not anything that you were expecting. Before you speed-dial the pediatrician, keep in mind that some not-so-normal colors are actually okay. Breastfed babies often have mustardy or greenish poop, while formula-fed newborns might come in shades of tan, brown or tannish-green. Obviously, red, black or bloody poop should be totally alarming. Call your doctor, but don’t immediately assume something major is wrong (only a medical expert can evaluate what’s going on with your baby). On occasion, the blood is actually from you (if you have dry, cracked nipples from nursing).

2. Excessive Sleep: You’ve spent the last few months napping in preparation for staying awake 24-7. Now that baby’s here, she’s really not up much of the time. Hmm. That doesn’t seem right. For the most part, you can expect your newborn to sleep for eight to nine hours during the day and another eight at night. Keep in mind, this doesn’t mean your baby won’t wake up during these times. After all, her teeny tiny stomach can’t hold much food right now, so she’ll wake for feedings.

3. Learning: Yeah, we all know that the early years are learning years. But, don’t expect that your newborn will someday go to Harvard simply because you read Shakespeare to her while playing Mozart and showing her highly patterned black and white pictures. You’ve just brought baby home from the hospital. Now is not the time to start scheduling elaborate lesson plans. Focus on what comes naturally — loving your baby! Give her hugs, cuddles and snuggles. The learning part can wait, at least for a few months anyway.

4. Bonding: Repeat these three words over and over again: It will happen. You spent nine months talking to her as she grew inside you. Now that she’s finally here, you kind of feel like she’s an odd little alien. Your maternal instinct isn’t kicking in — yet. Sometimes that lovey dovey feeling doesn’t happen immediately. Even though you love her, it might take some time to truly feel a bond. Give yourself a moment to breath. The more time you spend with your baby, the more you’ll begin to bond. That said, if you’re depressed or can’t ditch those “baby blues,” it could be a sign of post-partum depression, so call your doctor immediately.

5. Germs: There’s no way around it. Germs are everywhere. They’re on doorknobs, the changing table and your kitchen counters. Before you start spending naptime moments bleaching every corner of the house, take a step back. Yes, cleaning and disinfecting are must do’s. But that doesn’t mean you have to drench yourself in hand sanitizer before picking up baby. When it comes down to it, keep yourself, your baby and your house clean. Just not overly so. Someday your kiddo will get a cold, and it won’t be your fault.

6. Acne:No, not yours. Your baby’s. That’s right, babies can have acne. Infant acne typically creeps up sometime around 3-4 weeks, following hormonal changes. While in rare cases the baby pimples signal a true hormonal problem, most of the time it’s just a passing phase. Think of it like being a teenager, taken down a step (or a few). Even though it won’t make for perfect pictures right now, infant acne typically clears up quickly without any treatment. That means, keep the scrubs, toners and drying creams for your face only.

7. Eating: Your baby isn’t eating as much as you think she should be, or she’s eating too much. All the books said she’d eat every two hours. But, she just went two hours and seven minutes in between feedings! What’s going to happen? Oh, probably nothing. Unless your baby isn’t eating at all, is losing weight, is in some sort of gastrointestinal distress or absolutely won’t stop feeding for even a second, chances are she’s okay. The lucky thing for you is that there’s a pediatrician just a phone call away. Before you consult good ol’ doctor Google, ask the actual expert.

Even though the nickname "Gertie" has a playful, vintage charm (and perhaps even reminds us of 5-year-old Drew Barrymore in "E.T."), it hasn't been enough to breathe new life into the full name, which has fallen out of favor in recent decades.

2. Ambrose

With Latin origins, Ambrose is a distinguished name that means "immortal." Yet despite it feeling both gentle and strong, many modern parents have seemingly shied away from it.

In 2023, Ambrose ranked at number 789 in U.S. baby name popularity, so its retirement may be on the horizon.

3. Ethel

Ethel, which is English in origin, means "noble maiden" and was once widely popular, especially during the early 20th century.

At the height of its fame, Ethel Barrymore was a Broadway icon, and the name was a staple in many households. It even held a top 10 spot for 16 years and remained in the top 100 until 1939.

Nonetheless, Ethel has a vintage vibe that can sound too old and may be better suited for earlier generations.

4. Bertha

Erland Efendi

Meaning "bright" and "glorious," Bertha is a German name that was once viewed as strong, feminine, and elegant. It reached its height during the late 19th century, but today, it seems a bit outdated.

Ranked at number 8,481 in U.S. birth name popularity, it's clear that Bertha has lost much of its appeal.

5. Claude

Claude is a name of French Origin and has ancient Latin roots that mean "lame." While the literal translation may not be the most flattering, the name has a rich history, having been carried by numerous notable figures.

Even so, Claude has struggled to make a significant comeback. It's ranked at number 6,685 in U.S. births, meaning it's a rare choice for today's little ones.

Derived from Myrtus, an evergreen shrub known for its medicinal properties used to treat respiratory ailments and skin inflammation, Myrtle is a Greek name that was first used for girls in the 1850s.

However, with its current ranking of 24,192 in U.S. births, Myrtle has definitely fallen into obscurity.

7. Chester

With English and Latin roots, Chester means "fortress," "camp," or "camp of soldiers." It was once favored for its association with strength and protection and is sometimes used as a nickname for "Rochester."

Regardless, Chester currently ranks at number 3,715 in U.S. births, showing parents are passing up this classic choice.

8. Edna

Finally, Edna is a name with Hebrew origins that means "rejuvenation" and "delight." With its biblical roots in the apocryphal Book of Tobit, the name carries a sense of spiritual renewal and grace.

Despite its rich meaning, Edna has become less popular in recent years, coming in at number 3,542 among U.S. births.

My S.O. will probably tell you that I randomly belt out, "Baby you're a firework" several times a day because I can't get enough of the way Katy Perryactively encourages people to b their full selves. It's something she strives to do in her career and personal life as evidenced by her public relationship with the actor Orlando Bloom. Yes, the same man who deliciously played Legolas in The Lord of the Rings and Will Turner in The Pirates of the Caribbean.

Now that I'm done catching my breath, it's recently occurred to me that these two are still in the wedding planning stage despite getting engaged all the way back in 2019. I'm certainly not knocking it, but I thought it'd be fun to revisit their relationship timeline to see how their love story began. Let's get into all things Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom!

On February 27, 2025, Blue Origin announced that Katy Perry is joining the New Shepard NS-31 crew — alongside an all-female crew including iconic journalist, Gayle King — that's headed out to space this spring...like actual factual outer space. While that fact is shocking to nearly everyone (just look at the comments section on the Instagram announcement), we could only imagine what that conversation with husband-to-be, Orlando Bloom was like.

However, Katy Perry just gave us a peak into her decision making process — including what her fiancé thinks about it all. On March 3, 2025, Katy told The Morning Mash Up on SiriusXMthat she and Orlando "respect each other so much" so they "want to get input from each other."

"He is also all about the journey," she said. "That's one thing, I really, really admire about him — he's a seeker."

So it's clear her almost hubby is here for her big space adventure! It's so nice to see how these two continue to support each other.

September 2024

Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom took the "'black" carpet at the 2024 VMA Awards, and they looked better than ever! Katy bared her body in a frayed, white two-piece look that only she could pull off, while Orlando rocked an all-black outfit to let her ensemble shine.

And while they looked great, Katy had a very relatable mom moment during an interview. She looked into the screen and told her daughter Daisy not to stay up too late and to "eat your broccoli," noting that it's Daisy's first time watching MTV ever! Adorable!

Orlando then introduced Katy before her VMA Vanguard Award performance. He said, "You fell in love with her as Katy Perry. I fell in love with her as Katherine Hudson." He continued by elaborating on Katy's many successes and how proud he is of her.

Then, post-performance (wow, that aerial work was INCREDIBLE), Orlando presented the actual Moon Person to Katy. While Katy rattled off the usual thank you's (her label, her team, her parents), there was one "thank you" that really stood out among the rest. When thanking her husband, she said, "Thank you to Orlando for keeping me grounded, celebrated, and doing the dishes." Stars — they really are just like us!

Shortly after her electrifying VMA Vanguard Award performance, Kate Perry explained how much her stepson Flynn helped her piece together parts of her album 143. She chatted with Audacy about his contributions, but made it known her family doesn't obsess over her music like fans."They've had enough of me. I mean, they're fine, but like...my family, they're telling me to move or take the trash out," she said.

Flynn's the only one who truly offers tangible feedback. She said, "He's got good taste" and "loves this song called 'All the Love,'" on 143. Out of everything Katy's written, it's one of her "favorite songs."

April 2024

Now here we are in 2024 and the blushing couple are still very much in love. They attended the 10th Annual Breakthrough Prize Event earlier this month and look elegant in their black-tie outfits.

As far as their wedding plans are concerned, Katy Perry shared what she plans to do once she leaves American Idol. Per Parade, she appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and said, "I think this probably will be my last show, my last season forIdol. I mean, I love Idolso much. It’s connected me with the heart of America, but I feel like I need to go out and feel that pulse to my own beat."

She didn't explicitly talk about when she's getting married to Orlando bloom but we'll cross our fingers for a beautiful wedding either this year or in 2025.

Orlando also revealed to Flaunt that things can be challenging for the couple. He said, "Her pool is not a pool that I necessarily understand, and I think my pool is not a pool that she necessarily understands. Sometimes things are really, really, really, challenging. I won’t lie. We definitely battle with our emotions and creativity."

Appearing on Chelsea Handler's podcast Dear Chelsea, Katy got real about her and Orlando attending therapy together. "We love it because it keeps us in tune...and so when you want to come back to being normal in a domesticated world where you have a child and stuff like that, you have to really learn how to be kind of different out there in the big and in the small," she said.

When Katy Perry accepted a prestigous award at Variety's Power of Women in 2021, she gave a heartfelt message that spoke of the two greatest loves in her life — Orlando Bloom and their daughter Daisy. BRB, I have to grab tissues.

August 2020

Later that year, UNICEF posted a photo of Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom holding their newborn's hand on Instagram to announce she'd arrived. The organization told fans via their caption that the couple were overjoyed about their daughter's birth. "We are floating with love and wonder from the safe and healthy arrival of our daughter," the organization shared in its caption.

Orlando couldn't help but gush over his little girl during a brief virtual appearance for The Ellen Show. He said, "...she sort of looked like a bit like my mum so then I got a little bit confused because Katy's breast feeding this mini-me/my mum/who’s she going to look like next."

The video for "Never Worn White" seemed to hint at the gender of Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom's baby, but the singer officially confirmed it on an Instagram post promoting her single "Daisies." A source told the outlet, "They changed the timing due to the location they want," and that makes sense. In a hilarious turn of events, Katy Perry found herself winning a date with Orlando Bloom after she outbid an eager fan during the One Love Malibu Festival charity auction. A fan account on Instagram shared a video of the Katy saying, "You can do a motorcycle ride with him to a lunch destination to have lunch with Orlando freaking Bloom. That also means that when you are on the motorcycle with him you’re holding him in a way that I am not excited about."

By the fall of 2018, Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom were definitely an item again. They appeared on their first red carpet together at The Global Ocean Gala and looked stunning. Elle even reported the two took a picture with Prince Albert and Princess Charlene of Monaco.

Sadly the couple broke up in 2017 and this caused their reps to release a statement to People in order to control any narratives that may have stemmed from it. “Before rumors or falsifications get out of hand, we can confirm that Orlando and Katy are taking respectful, loving space at this time,” the statement said.

Two sources gave different reasons for their split, but E! News reported that an insider said, "...they did discuss a future together during their relationship. They had an enormous amount of love for one another."

Per People, the “Firework” singer bonded with an American Idol contestant and excitedly shared how her paths crossed with Orlando. “So I had my security guard grab 10 In-N-Outs and all of a sudden I see my boyfriend’s hand — he wasn’t even sitting at our table — he just swoops in and he grabs it and I was like, ‘Hey that my burger,’” she recalled.

Leighton Meester Just Revealed A Surprising Detail About Her 2 Kids With Adam Brody

Adam Brody and Leighton Meester are definitely one of our favorite celebrity couples, but they’re also some of our favorite celeb parents. The couple has two children together, and they keep their family life pretty private.

But while getting all dolled up during a video interview on February 27, Leighton Meester offered a rare update about their kids, including a glimpse into their work-life balance as a family of 4.

While recording a Vogue Beauty Secrets video, Leighton Meester revealed that her kids are pretty used to traveling for her and Adam Brody's work.

“My kids, they get what we do," she says. "They come on location a lot." And while both Leighton and Adam have worked on some pretty big projects (and Leighton just joined Nobody Wants This season 2!), the Gossip Girl actress doesn't "think they're fazed at all."

"They get a lot of us off set and a lot of us not working, which has been always a really big benefit for both of us," she continues.

She also revealed to Brit + Co exclusively that Arlo is pretty helpful in the kitchen. “What I try to do is meal prep as much as I can. Sometimes that doesn't work out for me, but for my kids — I'll make things ahead of time," she says, adding that she's in “one of the luckiest positions that a mom could be.”

“When I was still nursing or my babies were still young, I had plenty of space and time to [be with my kids]," she continues. "And I know most women who are mothers don't have that opportunity at all.”

"We have some very truthful conversations, for better or worse. But other than that, I wouldn’t say overly strict," he continues. "There is a helicopter, you know, to keep them safe. I’m not overly strict but I see the sharp edges, literally...I want to keep those heads maintained."

Apparently, Ben feels like he "can just be himself" when he's with her. “Even though Ben and Jen have been split for a while now, he feels a certain level of comfort with her," the source said. “Ben has a strong relationship with Jen that will never dissipate because they have a lot of history together and she’s the mother of his kids.”

Meanwhile, another source shared with PEOPLEthat Jen, Ben, and their kids all worked together at The Midnight Mission's Thanksgiving Street Fair as well. The source said, “They truly enjoy giving back to their community and cherishing quality time together as a family."
