Not So Fast, Taylor: Science Says Grudges Are Bad for Your Health

Taylor Swift is angry — like, dress-up-like-a-zombie-and-emerge-from-the-grave angry. To see Swift proudly display her heart on her sleeve is nothing new: From her early days as a pop-country singer-songwriter, she has built a career upon writing emotion-fueled music about her personal experiences. And most of us loved it. But innocent choruses aimed at her Rolodex of exes — think “I Knew You Were Trouble” and “We Are Never Getting Back Together” — have recently evolved into something more sinister.

Before her now legendary 2009 MTV VMAs show drama with Kanye West, it would have been difficult (even laughable) to imagine a character as saccharine as Swift with enemies. However, with the release of “Look What You Made Me Do,” her first single after three years without new music, the formerly perky Swift (RIP “Shake it Off”) re-emerged as a bitter villain bent on getting back at those who wronged her.

While Swift’s very public feuds with the likes of Katy Perry and Kimye began as an extension of her trademark emotional honesty (a la “Bad Blood”), her new work, instead built on the rickety framework of unforgiveness, has surpassed innocent authenticity and entered toxic territory.

This time, Swift isn’t here to put memory to melody. And based on her lyrics (“Maybe I got mine, but you’ll all get yours”), she’s not interested in stirring drama for drama’s sake — she’s seeking recompense for crimes against her reputation. The girl’s got grudges, and she’s here to make good on them for better or for worse. But probably, mostly worse.

While channeling emotions like anger or stress into creativity can be a healthy coping mechanism, experts say unforgiveness — in Taylor’s term, “Bad Blood” — can have profoundly negative effects on both physical and mental health. So while Swift appears to be positioning herself to sabotage those who have tarnished her reputation, her method is counterproductive. From a psychological perspective, she’s essentially sabotaging herself.

“Having a vendetta or holding a grudge is toxic,” writes author Christopher Bergland in Psychology Today. “Over the long run — if you don’t make conciliatory efforts to neutralize interpersonal conflicts — holding a grudge will wreak havoc inside your body. In many ways, holding a grudge is a form of self-sabotage.”

How, exactly, does the sabotage go down? The havoc of a grudge usually begins with an isolated incident of anger, which escalates if it isn’t managed. Here’s how it works: Our anger or bitterness toward someone ignites the sympathetic nervous system, resulting in a release of cortisol, also known as the fight-or flight or stress hormone. Stress left unchecked, or worse, celebrated, creates a toxic environment in our bodies, setting the scene for disease, which means that negative emotions can literally make us sick. For example, scientists attribute elevated cortisol levels to physical issues like lower immunity, learning and memory problems, lower bone density, weight gain, blood pressure problems, and even lower life expectancy.

Mentally, rampant cortisol has equally toxic effects: It’s known as a trigger for depression and other mental illnesses, along with decreased resilience, especially among adolescents. And according to one study, 20 to 50 percent of individuals develop depression after recently experiencing a major life stressor (ongoing shade thrown from other celebrities and/or unrelenting media seems like a big one, to be honest).

Of course, there’s speculation that Swift’s feuds, and by extension, her fancy new anger, are manufactured or exaggerated as the most well-executed act of PR gymnastics in recent celebrity history. But even if that’s the case, her ongoing victim persona is not isolated. Because whether or not Swift herself is as guilty of grudges as we think she is, she may be setting an unhealthy example for her fans, many of them young and impressionable, by glamorizing toxic emotions, literally dressing them up in diamonds.

Given her multi-million-follower platform, her cryptic and admittedly terrifying Instagram image of a snake (there is no clearer symbol of poison!) before she released her single received 9.5 million views. It’s safe, then, to say Swift exists on the cutting edge of the pop culture algorithm, more likely setting trends than responding to them.

Public response to Swift’s new direction hasn’t been totally positive. But in spite of the criticism surrounding Swift’s resurgence, people are listening. Her video for “Look What You Made Me Do” had the biggest debut in YouTube history, with over 43 million views in 24 hours. And according to Billboard, the single is set to hit number one on the charts next week (sorry, “Despacito”).

Thankfully, Taylor isn’t trapped in her self-made toxicity, and neither are we, if we are willing to let go of our grudges (though for a celebrity act conjured solely on the premise of bitterness, there may be some heavy deconstruction involved). For most of us, finding a better, healthier path may be as simple as reclaiming positivity and seeking to mend broken relationships.

Mental health professionals associate forgiveness and restored connection with the “love hormone” oxytocin, which affects our minds and bodies inversely, like the yang to cortisol’s ying. While bitterness increases cortisol and diminishes oxytocin, connection re-establishes it, which could result in reduced anxiety, general emotional stability and even increased longevity.

Chances are good that Taylor Swift will outlive her angry stage and reset her emotional algorithm to impact us in a different, likely more potent way. But as she works out her public identity, whether she’s simply living through painful relationships or carefully orchestrating feuds from her Rhode Island mansion, we can hope that she will peer beyond the veneer of her fame and into the deeper places of her body and mind — for our sake, but mostly for her own. Because what she sang on 1989’s “New Romantics” is true: The best people in life are free.

What’s your take on the “new” Tay? Tell us @BritandCo!

After reports started circulating that Taylor Swift was distancing herself from Blake Lively amid the It Ends With Us drama (namely Blake calling in Taylor as backup in a meeting with Justin Baldoni, and then referring to the singer as one of her "dragons" in a text), sources promised things were good as gold between the two famous BFFs. But new reports are suggesting Taylor "feels used" by Blake (and her cringy Game of Thrones text).

Here's the latest update on the Taylor Swift and Blake Lively feud rumors.

Taylor Swift reportedly "feels used" by Blake Lively.

A source told Page Six Taylor Swift “is taking a break from their friendship right now,” and that she's “really hurt by this whole situation and feels like a pawn.”

Another source says Tay “can’t help but feel used” by Blake Lively as her legal battle with Justin Baldoni rages on, and that she “doesn’t appreciate being referred to as one of Blake’s dragons.”

"If you ever get around to watching Game of Thrones, you'll appreciate that I'm Khaleesi, and like her, I happen to have a few dragons," Blake allegedly said in a text message to Justin after their meeting with Taylor and Ryan Reynolds. "For better or worse, but usually for better. Because my dragons also protect those I fight for. So really we all benefit from those gorgeous monsters of mine. you will too, I can promise you."

TMZ reports that Taylor had no idea Justin would even be there, and didn't appreciate feeling weaponized. "It's weird to say that about a friend," an insider says of the text. And apparently, things are feeling strained. All in all, with somewhat conflicting reports, no one really knows how things stand between Blake and Taylor at the moment. But this alleged tension could impact who Taylor Swift brings with her to the Super Bowl.

And apparently, Blake might not get a Super Bowl invite this year.

Rumors were circulating that Blake already had an invite to the Big Game, but a source tells Daily Mailthat "Blake is not attending the Super Bowl with her. Blake has not left the house since this started practically. Taylor wants nothing to do with this trial and court case."

Another source told the US Sun that "Taylor would like to have some of her close friends and family all together and be there to show love and support her man" at the Super Bowl, but only time will tell who will spend the evening with Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce.

And even if Taylor doesn't want anything to do with the legal battle, Justin Baldoni's lawyer Bryan Freeman has already said there's a possibility she could be deposed for their March 2026 trial. "I don’t know that we’re going to depose Taylor Swift. I think that that’s going to be probably a game time decision. I don’t know that that decision has been made,” he said on TMZ's Two Angry Men podcast. “But, I can tell you this, anyone that reasonably has information that can provide evidence in this case is going to be deposed.”

Oy. Stay tuned for the latest update on Taylor Swift and Blake Lively's celebrity friendship.

2024 was the year of the internet boyfriend: Mike Faist and Josh O'Connor (Challengers), Ryan Gosling (The Fall Guy), and Glen Powell (Twisters). But it looks like Glen might be taken IRL — but no, it has nothing to do with Sydney Sweeney postponing her wedding (she's got a busy schedule, y'all!). Glen was seen leaving a pre-BAFTA party with Lily James, and the internet is in a frenzy.

Here's everything we know about those Glen Powell and Lily James dating rumors following the 2025 BAFTAs.

Lily James and Glen Powell get cozy ahead of the BAFTAs.

Glen Powell and Lily James starred together in Netflix's The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society in 2018, where they play lovers, but they were most recently seen together ahead of the 2025 BAFTAs. After a party thrown by Charles Finch and Chanel at Loulous in Mayfair, London, the duo hopped into a car together — and Glen lent Lily his coat (based on the rain on the windshield, he must have been protecting her from the weather. Sweet!).

These two actors match their energies so well, and now that they've been spotted together again, fans are hoping we them in a rom-com sooner rather than later. I could totally see them in a "farm girl meets city boy" love story (or maybe even an Emily Henry movie?)

Only time will tell whether these two are an item, but until we know for sure we'll just have to enjoy these super cute pics!

In the past, both actors have been linked with other stars in the past. Glen Powell dated model Gigi Paris until 2023, which is the same year rumors about a relationship with Sydney Sweeney went viral (Sydney later shut those rumors down).

Lily James has dated Matt Smith and Michael Shuman, and was spotted with Chris Evans in 2020.

Taylor Swift became a part of the It Ends With Us saga when her song "My Tears Ricochet" was featured in the movie's trailer, but none of us could have expected that by December 2024, the popstar would be pulled into Justin Baldoni and Blake Lively's legal battle. The singer, as well as Blake's husband Ryan Reynolds, was allegedly present for a conversation between Blake and Justin...and could now be deposed in their March 2026 trial. And while past reports say she didn't have any creative involvement in bringing It Ends With Us to the screen, apparently she did have a hand in casting Isabela Ferrer as young Lily. Wait, what?

Here's what Justin Baldoni & Isabela Ferrer had to say about Taylor Swift's involvement in It Ends With Us.

Taylor Swift was "a helpful part" of casting young Lily.

At the beginning of February 2025, multiple Us Weekly sources claimed Taylor didn't actually have any creative involvement in the movie. “Taylor has always been Blake’s friend, but Taylor doesn’t have any involvement in the case. She wasn’t part of the movie,” an insider says. “Taylor was not a producer on the film and had no creative involvement.”

“While she and Blake are friends, this case is now a legal matter for the courts to resolve,” they continue. “Dragging Taylor into it is unnecessary and misrepresents what really happened.”

But in a resurfaced video, Justin Baldoni tells Access Hollywood that the team searched far and wide to find Isabela Ferrer to play young Lily. "When you have somebody as beloved and recognizable as Blake," he says in the interview, "the only way it can really work is if you have somebody that resembles her."

And if you've seen the movie, you know that Isabela and Blake look so similar! “I had actually brought in and showed her casting tape to Blake and Taylor and they were both, like, ‘Yes! her,'” he said. “And that’s a true story.”

"Yes, she did," Isabela herself told Extra at the It Ends With Us premiere. “I don’t even know if I’m supposed to be saying it, but I’m saying it! Yeah, she was a helpful part of the process of the audition, which I found out later after I got it and that rocked my world. I have no words.”

The videos resurfaced among rumors of a feud between Blake and Taylor, which started flying after it was revealed Blake allegedly called Taylor (among others) as a dragon in a text to Justin. You know...like in Game of Thrones. "I'm Khaleesi, and like her, I happen to have a few dragons," Blake wrote. "For better or worse, but usually for better. Because my dragons also protect those I fight for. So really we all benefit from those gorgeous monsters of mine. you will too, I can promise you."

A Page Six source claims that Taylor “can’t help but feel used” by Blake Lively, and that she “doesn’t appreciate being referred to as one of Blake’s dragons.” In fact, the rumors spiraled so far that some internet users speculated that's why Blake wasn't with Taylor at the Super Bowlthis year.

But Swifties can rest assured because "Taylor is not shading Blake or is she trying to teach her a lesson," according to a Daily Mailinsider. It isn't like that. Even if Taylor did invite Blake, Blake would not come...Blake would not want to overshadow Taylor ever."

While trends in everything from fashion to interior design always come and go, certain baby names are on the brink of extinction, and it remains to be seen if they'll make a resurgence.

BabyCenter, a parenting resource website, recently shared its "Baby Names at Risk of Going Extinct" list for 2025, which used data submitted by registered website users.

The list revealed that a specific category of boy names, those ending with "-aden," are falling in usage. Jaden, for instance, hit peak popularity back in 2002 at number 62. Yet, in 2024, this name dropped 162 slots.

More millennial names are on the outs, too. From 1974 to 1996, Jamie was a name that stayed in the top 100 picks. However, it plummeted by 320 spots in 2024.

Plus, not even royal names have managed to evade the fall. Names like Phillip, Anne, and Catherine, all tied to the British royal family, have also seen notable dips.

Here are eight more baby names that could be heading toward extinction in 2025.

Scroll to find out which baby names are nearly extinct now!

1. Remy

Hồng Xuân Viên

This French name may remind you of the lovable cartoon rat from the movie "Ratatouille," but its popularity has still taken a hit.

From 2023 to 2024, Remy, which means "rower" and was historically used to honor St. Remigius, dropped a whopping 277 spots.

2. Guy

Erika Quirino

Despite the charm of this lighthearted yet masculine name, Guy is on the verge of extinction.

It was most popular during the 1950s, with usage steadily declining ever since then. Guy fell 990 spots from 2023 to 2024, landing at number 2,718 last year.

3. Liv

J carter

Short for Olivia, which means "olive tree," this name is Latin in origin and reached its height in 2016.

However, its short length and elegance seemingly haven't been enough to keep it relevant. Liv tumbled 257 spots from 2023 to 2024, landing at number 970.

4. Randall

Helena Lopes

With Old English roots meaning "wolf shield," Randall was once a beloved boy's name. But ever since peaking in 1960, this baby name has continued on a downward trend.

There appeared to be some hope in 2023 when Randall saw a rise of 63 spots. Nonetheless, it was still number 1,753 in 2024.

5. Belle

Subin Cherian

You may associate the name Belle with the classic film "Beauty and the Beast." However, this French name, which means "beautiful," has witnessed a pretty consistent downturn since 1880.

It has dropped 242 spots since 2023 and sat at number 984 in popularity in 2024.

6. Danny

Helena Lopes

Stemming from the more formal name of Daniel, which means "God is my judge," Danny is a classic and friendly name. Even so, it's faded in recent years.

Danny was most popular during the late 1940s and early 1950s. As of 2024, it sat at number 558.

7. Carolyn

Natalia Olivera

Taking inspiration from the names Carol and Linda, which mean "joyous song" and "pretty," respectively, Carolyn was most popular in 1942. A total of 14,794 baby girls per million were given this name that year.

This figure fell to 140 baby girls per million in 2023, landing Carolyn at number 1,568.

8. Arnold

Henley Design Studio

Last but not least is Arnold, a name with Germanic roots that means "eagle power."

According to BabyCenter, it was most used in 1916, but in 2024, it ranked number 3,328 in terms of baby boy name popularity.
