The Surprising Thing I Learned From Running The NYC Marathon

I set three goals for myself as I approached my 30th birthday: live in a city larger than San Francisco (where I was living at the time), study Spanish in Spain, and run a marathon. I spent a summer working in Paris the year before, and my coworker Scott was training for the NYC marathon. I never considered myself a runner – AT ALL – but I joined him one morning for a run along the Canal Saint-Martin (we looked conspicuously American in our running shoes). He was a slow runner and it made me realize that I can actually run if I just slow down.

When I returned to SF, I started making my year-long plan to save money to leave my tech job, book classes in Spain, enter the NYC marathon lottery, and move to New York City. I was in Seville, my first stint studying my Puerto Rican father’s native tongue, when I learned that I was chosen in the lottery. Terror and excitement set in all at once. That meant I’d have to actually train for a marathon, never having run more than a mile.

Pain Before The Gain

Having already left my heart and job in SF, I returned home to my mom’s house in New Jersey to start training. It helped that I didn’t have a job and could focus the next two months on eating, sleeping, and running. I started out of the gate strong, 5 very slow miles. I realized that not thinking about the finish line made it much easier to focus on just running. I started to learn about my form – keeping my head up, shoulders back, relaxing my hands. I figured out a pace that worked for me – as soon as I started to lose my breath, I slowed down vs. just stopping. It became a game for me to keep my breath even. My body would eventually get stronger and take me literally the extra mile. I started running 5Ks to get familiar with the race experience. I trained with NYC friends, who were either training for the same marathon or had run it before. I eventually reached the final 20-mile training run, which I ran in the rain in Central Park.

My body was the strongest it had ever been. I was lean and healthy but my body was still the same pear shape it had always been. That’s when it sort of hit me – I had worked the hardest I ever had and my body was still my body. I was never going to have long legs or small hips no matter how hard I worked. I realized that griping about my imperfections – even if just in my head – was a huge waste of time. Once I realized that, I sort of let go of the body insecurities and negative self talk circulating in my brain. The marathon kick-started a life-long routine of running and taking better care of my body. Kind of an intense kickstart, but I’m grateful for it!

Five Boroughs In One Day & On Day One

While I trained, I searched for a place to live in NYC. I found a roommate situation on 70th and Columbus Avenue, just a few blocks away from the marathon finish line in Central Park. And thus I was committed! I moved into the fifth-floor walkup the night before the race and woke up the next morning before dawn to head to Staten Island, where the race would begin. I started running with two friends until they eventually outpaced me.

By mile 8, running through Brooklyn, I knew I was going to finish it. I was at a good pace and I felt like I was on auto-pilot. I knew my body was strong enough to get to the finish line. My first day as a New Yorker, I ran through all five boroughs. Random New Yorkers were cheering “Go T!” because of the letter T I had on my shirt; I saw my mom on the sidelines in upper Manhattan and teared up, and my college friends met me one mile before the finish line with a sign that read “T-Love, Nice Hustle” and on the back “26.2 ain’t got nothing on you!” They jumped in to run with me for a bit – the total boost I needed to get to the finish line (a mile in, I *did* start to think about the finish line).

Every year after that, for the five years I stayed in NYC, I would join the runners but only from the sidelines. I’m so glad I took that time in my life – single, no job, no kids – to train and run it because it was an amazing NYC experience and a huge personal accomplishment. Eventually my career, relationships, and raising a child would take over my life but I’ll always have that New York memory. I’ll always have the NYC marathon.

1. Hot peppers

Hot peppers like jalapeños, serranos, habaneros, and more contain capsaicin, which lends them their spicy heat. Though capsaicin can totally enhance the flavors of certain dishes, it can also irritate the lining of the stomach and intestines, causing pains, cramps, upset bowel movements, acid reflux, or heartburn.

2. Curry spices

Many common curry spices like turmeric, cumin, coriander, and chili powder tend to stimulate stomach acid production. While they can aid digestion when eaten in small amounts, they can be harmful if you're simply sensitive to them or eat ‘em in large doses. If you have a sensitive stomach, you could experience indigestion, bloating, or a burning sensation from certain spices.

3. Milk

Ah, yes – the ol’ lactose intolerance! Milk obviously contains lactose, which is commonly hard to digest. If you’re lactose intolerant or have a sensitive stomach, consuming milk can lead to gas, bloating, cramps, and diarrhea as undigested lactose ferments in the gut.

4. Cheese

Just like milk, cheese contains lactose – though typically in smaller amounts. Nonetheless, it can trigger plenty of tummy problems. Aged cheese in particular can also be high in fat, slowing digestion.

5. Coffee

Coffee is not only naturally acidic on its own, but it also encourages the stomach to produce more acid. This can irritate the stomach lining and contribute to acid reflux, heartburn, or gastritis (AKA inflammation of the stomach lining). On the contrary, it can also speed up digestion, leading to cramping or less-than-ideal bowel movements.

6. Tomatoes

Tomatoes are another naturally acidic food and can trigger acid reflux or heartburn easily. These symptoms are especially prevalent in people with sensitive stomachs or GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease). The acidity can also irritate the esophagus and cause a burning sensation or indigestion after eating.

I'll be the first to say I've had to set strict limits for myself because it's been too easy to stay glued to gossip sites and what's happening in the world. While it's always great to be informed, there is a such thing as information overload that can affect us mentally and emotionally.

Make an effort to find activities to occupy your time sans scrolling endlessly on Instagram, TikTok, or other news platforms.

2. It Allows You To Be Honest With Yourself If You're An Overthinker

Have you been allowing overthinking to make you feel stressed? If so, you should try writing down or repeating a few phrases to help you calm down. They're such a big help if you have anxiety because they remind you that you can be present in the moment instead of existing solely in your head.

This should be in all caps, but I don't want you to think I'm yelling at you. It's just, I know what it's like to be hyper-independent while embodying the traits of a "strong woman." But, there's some things you can't #GirlBoss or #LuckyGirlSyndrome your way out, and it can be devastating if you don't like asking for help maneuvering a tough event.

I'm still processing an emergency situation I was in after what was supposed to be a routine doctor's visit, so I've been out of my element whenever I lean on my family and friends for emotional support. I usually like to deal with sad or scary situations by myself, but not all things are meant to be shouldered by ourselves.

What I can tell you is that asking for help and receiving it makes life a little more peaceful because there's no extra burden of hurting while trying to portray a role society claims it loves.

4. You'll Become Comfortable Journaling Your Thoughts

I sound like a broken record, but I feel strongly about journaling your thoughts. It's a way of processing things that have happened and how you feel about them. Also, it can be a place where you create lists of goals, books you want to read, hobbies you want to try, and more!

If you can, push the pause button on being available to everyone for a couple of days. Even if you're an extrovert, it never hurts to occasionally stay in bed and do nothing. Take it from someone who has a hard time resting: you're not "lazy" if you're not always going somewhere or talking to someone.

6. You'll Begin To Do Nice Things For Yourself

Buying myself flowers is one of my favorite things to do in my soft girl era. Instead of waiting for a man to surprise me with a bouquet outside of Valentine's Day, I regularly adorn my home with tulips or sunflowers. Being a soft girl isn't just about looking good or reaching for fun things, it's also about nourishing your body with healthy meals. Sometimes we eat and drink things that our digestive system doesn't like, so I'm recommending that you make small changes to your meals.

You can create your own Mediterranean bowl à la Cava or aim to eat more fruits and veggies during the week. Whatever you choose, just remember to start small!

9. You May Even Adopt A Sober Lifestyle

Whether you know it or not, there's great joy in grabbing a non-alcoholic beverage with your bestie in the city. You can catch up about life, share your dreams or whatever's troubling you, and sip the greenest beverage that beats the idea of eating green eggs and ham. That's right — I'm talking about matcha.

10. Solo Activities Won't Feel Daunting

During a panel at Bell Works in New Jersey (where the show is filmed), Britt Lower revealed a theory the whole Severance cast is "getting a kick out of [is] Ricken being a goat," she tells People. "I think that's everyone's collective theory. You never know."

Michael Chernus (who plays Ricken in the show) says that "people have all kinds of theories about Ricken that he's a goat or that he's an Eagan or he's part of the board. I think, you know, we don't see a ton of Ricken in season 2, so I think the fact that he isn't around much makes him seem very suspicious to some people."

Fans love getting caught up in the theories, but for the team behind-the-scenes, it's a little tricky to navigate. "You have to like take all that with a grain of salt and sort of appreciate that everybody has different ideas, but we have to have our own sort of clear idea of what we're doing that is independent of that," executive producer Ben Stiller says.

However, that doesn’t mean he turns a blind eye to online chatter, saying, “I'll read a theory and I'll be like, 'Oh I wish we were making that show because that sounds cool.' But generally, I have to sort of turn the other way," creator Dan Erickson agrees.

Yes, Apple TV renewed Severance for a season 3 on March 21, 2025.

“Making Severance has been one of the most creatively exciting experiences I’ve ever been a part of,” executive producer and director Ben Stiller says in a statement. He jokes that, “While I have no memory of this, I’m told making season three will be equally enjoyable, though any recollection of these future events will be forever and irrevocably wiped from my memory as well.”
