The Biggest Trends From NYFW (That You Can Shop Now)

NYFW Trends Spring 2022 Brandon Maxwell

Blink, and you may have missed it — New York Fashion Week has already come to a close, after jam-packed days taking over the streets of New York (and our Instagram and TikTok). While the fashion set has already decamped to other festivities, like Sunday night's VMAs and Monday night's Met Gala affair, we're left salivating over all the NYFW Spring 2022 trends and inspiration for dressing next season. After a year and half hiatus, most of the major New York based brands showed up with IRL events and presentations that showed off a whole lot of optimism for next year. The colors were bright, the tailoring was relaxed, and the designs were all-around playful. Fashion seems to be saying the future will be bright — but for those of us who can't stand to wait any longer, here's how to start shopping for next season's biggest trends, now.

Electric Knits

We've all come to love our knitwear over the past year, but it's time to liven things up for spring with sweaters in bright colors and cardigans in electric hues.

H&M Rib-Knit Cardigan ($20)

Despite the bold color, this simple ribbed cardigan will be so versatile for this season and next.

Alice + Olivia Mora Twist Cropped Long Sleeve Pullover ($330)

Spring's neon-colored knitwear trend meets fall's continued obsession with boleros and shrug-like sweaters.

Who What Wear Shrunken Cardigan ($35)

Why wait until spring to throw this cheery cardigan on? Style with an all-black or neutral outfit for a fun pop.

Cute Quilting

As Seen At: Alice + Olivia, Sandy Liang, Moschino

No one said we were ready to give up cozy (or cottagecore) trends just yet. Be prepared for quilted jackets in soft colors and sweet florals to take over your outerwear in no time.

ASOS DESIGN Curve Quilted Cropped Jacket ($54)

This sage green quilted coat will transition seamlessly between fall dressing and spring ensembles.

Clare V. Timothé Black & Lilac Quilted Floral Vest ($295)

Layer over sweaters and under coats now, then shed the layers in the spring to let this pretty vest shine.

Anthropologie Quilted Patchwork Jacket ($160)

Whether your style is more bohemian or a little preppy, this coat is a sweet addition to any wardrobe.

Next Checks

www.instagram.com

As Seen At: Prabal Gurung, Brandon Maxwell, Christian Cowan

We can't get enough of the check trend — which is why we're already loving spring's version, which mixes in preppy ginghams and psychedelic houndstooth patterns, too.

Faithfull The Brand Falabelle Midi Dress ($229)

Just add combat boots and a leather jacket, and you can wear this dress all the way until spring, and then some.

Free People Aldrin Cardi ($198)

Truthfully, we may never take this dreamy cardigan off until next summer.

UO Olympia Scarf Pant ($69)

Let these fun pants pop underneath your outerwear this season until they stand out on their own come the next.

Western Touches

www.instagram.com

As Seen At: Proenza Schouler, Peter Do, Bronx and Banco

The runways are riding the western trend into next season with modern interpretations of traditional motifs, like fringe, chaps, and of course, cowgirl hats.

Wyeth Cash Cowboy Hat ($88)

No fall wardrobe is complete without some cute headwear, and no spring wardrobe will be complete with a cool cowgirl hat.

Ronny Kobo Marley Pant ($338)

Ronny Kobo served up stunning looks at The Revolve Gallery that showed how to style fall 'fits with winks of western touches, like snakeskin (faux) leather.

Line & Dot Jasper Fringe Cable Knit Sweater ($112)

Pair a fringed sweater with tried-and-true blue denim jeans for the right amount of western, this season and next.

Crochet Away

www.instagram.com

As Seen At: Anna Sui, Jonathon Simkhai, Staud

You don't need to plan a tropical vacation to rock crochet pieces anymore — wear the retro trend with your favorite fall denim until you can swap your jeans out for spring swimwear.

Anthropologie Cozy Crochet Cardigan ($300)

This splurge-worthy statement coat will add a whole lot of charm to your wardrobe for years of wear to come.

Glassons Crochet Tie Longsleeve Top ($50)

Crochet that's cute enough to be worn on a night out (with a matching skirt, no less), but dainty enough for daytime wear with denim, too.

For Love & Lemons Opens Blanca Crochet Sweater ($119)

If crafty crochet isn't for you, take notes from Jonathan Simkhai and start looking for simple, feminine crochet knits, like this sweet top.

Metallic Madness

www.instagram.com

As Seen At: Tom Ford, Rodarte, Christian Siriano

Tom Ford knows how to end Fashion Week with a bang — this year, it was with a sequined, satin-filled, majorly-metallic moment that (literally) mirrored other collections with celebratory sentiment. If the best is yet to come next spring, the least we can do is start dressing the part!

River Island Sequin Halter Top ($50)

The runways have confirmed: You no longer need an occasion to justify wearing a sequined halter top out.

Commando Sequined Leggings ($200)

These are the kind of leggings that make you want to dance as soon as you put them on — which is the point of this trend to begin with.

City Chic Class Satin Joggers ($79)

Get ahead of the metallics trend so you can wear your new pieces through the holidays, too. Hopefully, as fashion has predicted, there will be plenty to celebrate by then!

I've been floating in the pop cultural abyss because I was clueless about how amazing Netflix's latest comedy Survival of the Thickest is! I just finished Season 2 and it's the funniest and rawest TV series I've watched since being persuaded to binge The White Lotus. But, that's not the show it actually reminds me of.

No, Survival of the Thickest feels like Insecure and And Just Like That had a comedic baby we get to watch grow in real time. There's the familiar supportive friend group, burgeoning careers, and passionate love stories that make you want to call your bestie to complain or scream in excitement.

I genuinely can't stop watching it and can't wait to share why you should be watching it too!

Scroll to learn everything about Survival of the Thickest and why you should watch it this week!

What is 'Survival of the Thickest' about?

Vanessa Clifton/Netflix

What happens when you face the worst breakup ever? You cry and find a way to revamp your life, according to Mavis from Survival of the Thickest.

The series revolves around her getting acclimated with being single again while juggling her floundering stylist career. She's got a supportive village, but that doesn't mean she's not prone to making mistakes or facing situations worth cackling about outside of her group chat.

Where does filming take place?

The show is primarily filmed in New York, but parts of Season 2 take place in Italy (via IMDB)!

Who's a part of the cast?

Vanessa Clifton/Netflix

Survival of the Thickest has a sprawling cast that features some new and familiar faces. According to Marie Claire, here are the main characters who've appeared in Seasons 1 and 2:

1. Michelle Buteau as Mavis Beaumont

Vanessa Clifton/Netflix

Mavis Beaumont may have started off as a heartbroken stylist's assistant in Season 1 of Survival of the Thickest, but she's since gone on to build a name for herself in Season 2. She's also trying to figure out if she's going to stick with her new love interest Luca or go back to her familiar ex Jacque.

2. Taylor Selé as Jacque

Vanessa Clifton/Netflix

Jacque is a talented fashion photographer who seems to know what to say to uplift Mavis. Though he starts off saying and doing all the right things, Mavis catches him cheating on her and it leaves her devastated. Interestingly enough, Jacque appears to be remorseful over his huge transgression and tries to prove that he won't make the same mistake again.

3. Tasha Smith as Marley

Vanessa Clifton/Netflix

Marley's one of Mavis' no-nonsense besties who applies the same tenacity to her career as a finance executive. Her inspirational quips may come across as 'funny,' but she doesn't lie when she encourages those around her to move in excellence.

4. Tone Bell as Khalil

Vanessa Clifton/Netflix

Mavis is surrounded by even more love with the addition of the creative Khalil by her side. He has a softer approach than Marley, but he still wants the best for Mavis and has no problem helping redirect her when she's ready to throw pity parties. If only he could apply the same principles to his own love life...

5. Liza Treyger as Jade

Vanessa Clifton/Netflix

If you've ever had a roommate who triggered you at every turn, you probably had someone like Jade in your life. She's the kind of person who seems like she has good intentions, but always finds a way to do something that feels toxic. Whether it's ignoring boundaries or saying the wrong thing at the worst time, Jade's going to do it.

6. Garcelle Beauvais as Natasha Karina

Vanessa Clifton/Netflix

Garcelle Beauvais may have left The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, but you can watch her break necks and hurt feelings in Season 2 of Survival of the Thickest. She plays former '90s supermodel Natasha Karina who becomes Mavis' client after an initial period of misunderstandings.

7. Anthony Michael Lopez as Bruce

Vanessa Clifton/Netflix

Bruce has been on a mission to be the best assistant to Natasha Karina for as long as he can remember, so he takes it personally when Mavis doesn't seem to understand her new client in the beginning. Though he warms up to her too, his Type-A personality still follows closely behind.

8. Marouane Zotti as Luca

Vanessa Clifton/Netflix

Luca's all about Mavis and that's the I like it. Not only is he eye candy, but he's got enough passion stored in his body that makes me feel he's the obvious choice for our love-worn protagonist. However, only time will tell if Mavis thinks she and him are endgame or not.

9. Peppermint as Herself

Vanessa Clifton/Netflix

Survival of the Thickest is all about making sure all voices, storylines and identities are championed. Having Peppermint as another close friend of Mavis rounds out her supportive village because she's big on bringing her fun-loving energy wherever she goes. And when Peppermint takes a brief break from performing to get married, Mavis is right there rooting for her.

10. Alecsys Proctor-Turner as Nala

Vanessa Clifton/Netflix

My, how the tables have turned! In Season 2 of Survival of the Thickest, Mavis gets her own assistant in the form of the fashion-obsessed Nala. Though she has moments where her naive nature shines through, she helps provide even more comedic relief and moments of clarity.

How many seasons does 'Survival of the Thickest' have?

Fashion is like a time capsule that reflects the cultural, social, and artistic influences of each era. But for every timeless classic that we've gotten from decades past, there are also plenty of missteps that left us scratching our heads.

From strangely small hats to paisley prints and peplum tops, each decade has had its fair share of fashion fails. Whether you suffered through these trends or just want to cringe, get ready to laugh at some of history's most questionable style choices.

Scroll to see the outdated & absolute worst trends of every decade...

1. 1920s: Cloche Hats

The Vermont Country Store

Cloche hats were all the rage in the 1920s, but they were never the most flattering accessory for anyone. They were bell-shaped, fit snugly over your head, and often covered your eyebrows. So, wearers wound up looking more like swaddled babies in a bonnet.

Not to mention, this style was typically paired with shorter bob hairstyles and had a way of swallowing up the face, almost like a swim cap. You can still get this more old-fashioned style from The Vermont Country Store, or you can try a more modern take from Anthropologie...if you dare!

2. 1930s: Beach Dresses

Etsy

While itty-bitty bikinis are a common sight at beaches today, women took a more modest approach to swimwear during the 1930s. There's nothing wrong with leaving some things up to the imagination, either, but beach dresses took the trend too far.

Typically adorned with ruffles and other decorative details, these garments were supposed to make you look chic as you lounged seaside. But they were really just impractical since, obviously, sand, water, and layers of fabric don't exactly mix well.

3. 1940s: Mini Bowler Hats

Amazon

More than 80 years later, we're still confused about the rise of miniature bowler hats. These tiny pieces were perched awkwardly on wearers' heads and looked more like props from a costume party or play.

Mini bowler hats were simply too small to be practical yet too formal to be fun. And honestly, they were flat-out unflattering for most people.

4. 1950s: Poodle Skirts

Amazon

Along with sock hops came poodle skirts, another fashion faux pas. These oversized, felt circle skirts feature applique poodles or other kitschy designs and were a hit with teenagers.

They were twirl-friendly, making them great for dancing, but the overly literal embellishments were more childish than anything. The silhouette might work for some outfits today, but the poodles can stay in the past.

5. 1960s: Paisley Print

Ann Taylor

It's no secret that 1960s fashion embraced bold, psychedelic patterns. Regardless, paisley print (like this dress), especially in loud and clashing colors, was one of the cringier choices.

The swirling designs were just overwhelming and made wearers look more like dated wallpaper. Plus, when people paired paisley dresses, tops, or pants with equally loud accessories, the result was visual chaos.

6. 1970s: Sweater Vests

Macy's

We can thank the 1970s for groovy trends like tie-dye and bell bottoms, but sweater vests were more baffling. They weren't warm enough to be functional or stylish enough to be a statement piece.

So, these sleeveless knits toed an awkward line between preppy and pointless. Today, they've sort of made a comeback in baggier, more chic variations. But the classic fitted sweater vest can stay in the '70s.

7. 1980s: Sweatbands & Leg Warmers

Free People

In 2025, most people hit the gym in typical leggings or shorts with an oversized T-shirt or tank top. Back in the 1980s, workout classes looked more like overstimulating neon fashion shows.

Sweatbands and leg warmers are probably the worst offenders. They were meant to add flair to workout gear but were more about aesthetics than functionality.

Sure, a sweatband might be helpful, but leg warmers? Unless gyms in the '80s were equipped with crazy powerful air conditioning, it's hard to imagine anyone's calves were getting cold.

8. 1990s: Parachute Pants

Free People

Parachute pants were made from shiny, swishy nylon that, shocker, was the same material used for actual parachutes. These baggy bottoms typically came in neon colors or wild patterns, making them anything but subtle.

Aside from nylon not being very breathable, the style of parachute pants was just too loud and didn't really flatter silhouettes.

9. 2000s: Trucker Hats

ASOS

During the 2000s, trucker hats with air-brushed fronts and mesh backs somehow became a must-have accessory.

Brands like Ed Hardy and Von Dutch really popularized this look among teens and young adults, who paired them with low-rise jeans or graphic tees. While they helped complete the ultimate Y2K aesthetic at the time, trucker hats have been replaced with more neutral baseball caps.

10. 2010s: Peplum Tops

Nordstrom

Finally, peplum tops (like this striped one) are one of the most perplexing trends of the 2010s. They featured flared, ruffled hems that shot out from the waist and added more volume as opposed to defining someone's figure.

If you were a teen or college student during this regrettable era, you probably showed up to class or even parties wearing these tops. In hindsight, they weren't fun, flirty, or flattering.

One-Pot Chicken Caesar Pasta

Serves 4-6

Here’s a quick, flavorful twist on the classic Caesar salad — comforting yet refreshingly light! Made with seasoned chicken breast strips, Caesar dressing, crunchy breadcrumbs, artichoke hearts, and a squeeze of lemon, this creamy, garlicky pasta is your new spring staple!

Nicole Hill Gerulat

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup caesar dressing, divided
  • 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 pkg Perdue® Fresh Cuts Chicken Breast Strips
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Salt and fresh pepper
  • 2 tablespoons garlic
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 1 lb linguine or any type of pasta
  • 1/3 cup artichoke hearts, halved
  • 2 tablespoons capers, drained
  • 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese, finely grated
  • 1/4 cup toasted & salted breadcrumbs
  • Parsley, chopped
  • 1 lemon, cut in wedges

Nicole Hill Gerulat

Directions:

1. In a medium bowl, combine 3/4 cup caesar salad dressing, Italian seasoning and chicken breast strips to marinate for at least 30 minutes.

Nicole Hill Gerulat

2. In a large saucepan or dutch oven over medium heat, heat the oil until shimmering. Add the minced garlic and cook until fragrant, about 3 minutes.

3. With tongs, remove the chicken from the marinade and place directly into pan. Season with salt and pepper.

4. Cook for 3-4 minutes per side, not moving or flipping until well browned. Chicken is ready when an insta-read thermometer reads chicken at 165℉. Transfer grilled chicken to plate to rest while you make the pasta.

5. In the same pan, combine milk, remaining 1/4 cup caesar dressing and chicken broth and bring to a low simmer. Add the pasta and stir until the pasta fits in the pan.

6. Cook according to pasta package timed instructions. Stir occasionally to keep pasta from sticking. Salt to taste.

Nicole Hill Gerulat

7. When pasta is al dente, remove from heat and carefully stir in artichoke hearts and capers. Top with chicken and any juices collected, parmesan cheese, breadcrumbs and parsley. Serve with lemon slices and enjoy!

Nicole Hill Gerulat

When I moved into my home in the spring, the windows hadn’t been replaced in over 40 years! With a hot summer and rainy winter approaching, I was worried I’d be dealing with more than just a draft — so I swapped them out for double-pane, energy-efficient ones. Living in sunny California, solar panels were also a no-brainer. But making your home more energy efficient doesn’t have to mean major investments. Here are a few simple, budget-friendly ways to cut down on energy use without spending a fortune. Bonus: You'll save money on your energy bill too!

Here are low-cost ways to make your home more energy efficient.

1. Seal Drafty Doors and Windows

Use weatherstripping, caulk, or even a good old-fashioned draft stopper to prevent warm or cool air from escaping. It’s one of the quickest, cheapest ways to improve energy efficiency

Quince

2. Hang Thermal Curtains

Affordable and easy to install, thermal or blackout curtains help keep heat in during winter and block out the sun in summer, easing the load on your HVAC and reducing your heating and cooling costs. Plus, they add cozy style to a room!

3. Swap in LED Bulbs

LEDs use a fraction of the energy of traditional bulbs and last way longer. They’re a small investment that pays off quickly— especially if you swap them out room by room.

4. Use Smart Power Strips

Even when turned off, devices like TVs and computers draw power. Smart power strips cut that “phantom energy” without you needing to remember to unplug anything.

5. Install Low-Flow Showerheads and Faucet Aerators

Low-flow showerheads and faucet aerators are inexpensive, easy to install, and reduce water and energy use (since you’re heating less water).

6. Clean (or Replace) Air Filters Regularly

Dirty filters make your heating and cooling systems work harder, using more energy. Replace filters every 3-6 months for peak efficiency.

7. Wash Clothes in Cold Water

Most detergents are designed to work just as well in cold water, and heating water accounts for a big chunk of your washer’s energy use. Bonus: it’s gentler on your clothes, too so they'll look like new longer!
