As a Fashion Week newbie, it can be a little daunting to figure out what to wear to a show. After having attended a few presentations for NYFW so far (as a Polyvore + Brit + Co NYFW Correspondent ;), I can tell you the most important thing to keep in mind is the designer’s aesthetic. Google up what the designer came out with in the last collection. Ask yourself — what is their signature? What was the overall feeling of their last show? Use all that info to help you choose the right outfit. Need a little guidance? Here are five shows we wish we could’ve taken a “sick day” #coughcough to sit in the front row for PLUS what we would wear to them! What’s more? Each individual item featured in these looks is less than $100 — because great style doesn’t have to be expensive.
Jason Wu’s S/S ’15 collection was breathtaking. Wu designed an exquisitely elegant, yet chic and casual collection. It was heavy on minimalism, sleek and subtlety sexy, the kind of clothes you can be taken seriously in without being seriously stuffy. A sleek black Wilfred V-neck crop top and a high-waist pleated French Connection midi skirt are an appropriate pair for this kind of show. Pointed pumps from Black Five and a navy clutch bag that can be scooped up on Amazon are spot-on accessories for such a dainty, ladylike look.
Coach
The S/S ’15 collection for Coach was focused on iconic youth culture. The show was definitely Instagramable. The collection was playful and encompassed a plethora of pastels. And can we talk about the shoes? The flat forms are everything. A cool pastel print mini dress from Mango with gold flat form sandals from Nasty Gal and an oversize New Look denim jacket would be perfectly appropriate for this event. The hot pink Fashion Union satchel really pops against the all-pastel ensemble for a look that’s definitely cool.
VFiles
VFiles is an online social networking site for fashion. Four designers were selected from the site to present collections at NYFW. There was a big bag of tricks for this one and each collection was completely different. This is a show where anything goes, so why not be comfortable in a fitted Get The Looks pencil skirt, Monki tank top, Nike running shoes, finished off with a BCBG Max Azria bag and Chic Nova sunglasses. The show was energetic and ever changing so it’s best to sport a “be bold and ready for anything” look.
M Missoni
M Missoni’s look is both youthful and classic, iconic and easily recognizable. Patterns, prints and abstract motifs are part of the brand’s signature. The overall vibe is nonconformist freedom. Going to this show can be intimidating if you don’t own anything from M Missoni or its parent label. You have to focus on the things about the brand that you love and look for it in the clothing that you have. I saw a lot of black and white print from the S/S ’15 collection so incorporated the black and white pattern in a cute, affordable Levi‘s bag. I also really love M Missoni’s light gauzy fabrics. So, I chose a lace fabric dress from ASOS to embody that.
Whitney Pozgay
Whitney Pozgay, the designer behind Whit, is known for presenting chic fashion with a dose of fun. The S/S ’15 collection was inspired by the designer’s teenage years. It was a little bit punk rock with pretty prints that could start a fashion riot. They’re that good. It’s all about opposites attracting in this collection: Feminine but tough. I loved the pattern on this River Island skort paired with metallic J. Crew slip-on sneakers and a printed Zalando t-shirt for a fashion forward but casual outfit. Finish off the look with a Mango bag and a pair of shades from Amazon.
