How to Make a Dip Dyed Ombre Shower Curtain

Nothing can replicate the effect created when a piece of fabric is hand-dyed. This process has an artisan quality to it from the little irregularities and slight imperfections of the process; these kinds of details can’t be found in mass produced items. But this is one medium not restricted to professionals only – you can follow these easy steps to create a gorgeous shower curtain yourself! After you see how easy it is to get such great results, nothing in your house will be safe from a dip-dye!

Supplies:
– 2 boxes of RIT Fabric Dye (we used Navy + Teal)

– 1 cotton shower curtain

– 1 bucket

– liquid laundry detergent

– 3 cups salt

– large spoon

– plastic gloves

– measuring cup

– clothespins

– timer

Start by removing your curtain from the packaging and double check the label to ensure it really is 100 percent cotton. The dye won’t adhere to synthetic materials like polyester or nylon. If there are any finishes on the curtain that will keep it from absorbing the dye, wash it on gentle in warm water. It doesn’t need to be dried.

Once you make sure you have a curtain that will work, find a safe area that you don’t care if a few drops of dye spill. You can lay down a drop cloth, but I found working outside to be easiest. Put on your plastic gloves and pour one packet of teal RIT Fabric Dye into your bucket. Add approximately 4 cups of almost boiling water (I just prepared a full tea kettle and poured it in).

Stir until the powder dissolves. Next add 1 1/2 gallons hot tap water.

Now add 1 1/2 cups salt and a cap of liquid laundry detergent.

Stir again until everything is dissolved and well blended. Wipe clean any dye that may have collected on the sides of the bucket so it doesn’t dye the wrong parts of your curtain.

If your curtain is dry or has dried since washing it, wet it completely and gently wring out so its no longer dripping. We are going to dip the curtain upside down so the top gets dyed teal first in 10 minute increments. Decide how far you want the teal to go and mark it equally on both sides with clothes pins.

I found it easiest to fold the curtain in half so I could make sure I was pinning at the same height on both sides. You don’t need to be precise; just eye-ball about 3/4 of the way down the curtain and put a clothespin there. Then divide the remaining area into 4 equal parts by placing 3 more clothespins on each side. Dip your curtain in the dye up to the first clothespin and time it for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, lower the curtain down to the next clothespin.

After this 3rd 10 minutes has passed, lower again to the next pin. After 10 minutes, lower it to the last pin but only let this level soak 5 minutes. Now pull it out slowly and you should have 4 shades of teal. Be careful not to touch dye with your hands and then touch the curtain and spread the dye to unwanted parts.

Now hose down the curtain making sure the water runs from lightest to darkest so the dye doesn’t spread to the lightest parts. Wring it out and repeat this rinsing and wringing process until the water runs clear.

At this point you should have a curtain that looks something like this. You can see I draped my curtain on the back of a lawn chair to hold it up while I hosed it down. No two hand dyed fabrics will ever be exactly alike, so don’t stress if your’s looks different than mine. That’s the beauty of this project!

Next up lets prepare the navy dye by repeating the same steps we used to make the teal. Empty the navy powder packet and add 4 cups near boiling water and stir until the powder dissolves. Then pour in 1 1/2 gallons hot tap water and a 1/2 cup of salt.

Finish the dye-making process by adding a cap of detergent and stir until the solution is well mixed. Again wipe down the sides to remove any navy dye that has splashed onto the bucket sides. Now, place clothespins on what will be the bottom of the curtain at the level you wish the navy to dye. I decided to dye just the bottom 1/3 of the curtain navy, so you can see I just placed 3 clothespins on each side to mark off my dipping levels. I also folded the curtain in half again so I could make sure the clothespins were at the same levels on each side.

We are going to dip for 5 minute increments this time. So lower in your curtain to the first pins and time it for 5 minutes, occasionally poke the fabric down with the spoon so it all gets soaked. After 5 minutes, lower it again. Then lower it one last time at 5 minutes (this should be up to your last clothespin). When the time is up, dip it further for 30 seconds and then slowly lift the whole curtain out.

Now hose it down again (you could also use a bathtub or sink), remembering the water should run from the lightest shade of navy to the darkest. Wring it out and repeat the rinsing and wringing until the water runs clear.

Hang it in a sunny spot and it should be dry in just a few hours.

Place it in your bathroom and enjoy!

The options for dip dying are endless; you can always change up the colors, the soaking time, or how many colors you use. You could also use this technique on a regular curtain, tea towels, shirts, or pretty much anything made of cotton.

There’s nothing like a soft flannel shirt to keep you warm in the cold. They’re not only super comfy, like wearing PJs in public, but they’re also a closet staple that works for both men and women. We decided to give our softest flannel shirt a new look this season with a dip-dye DIY. Once you get the hang of fabric dyeing, you’ll want to transform your whole closet with a colorful dip dye. The possibilities are endless!

How To Make Your Own Dip Dye Flannel Shirt

Materials and Tools:

  • flannel shirt
  • fabric dye
  • plastic bucket
  • gloves
  • stir stick
  • cup or jar

Instructions:

  1. Make sure your shirt is laundered to remove any factory residue and prepare it to properly absorb dye.
  2. Follow the package instructions to mix up your dye solution.
  3. Fill your plastic bucket with water according to the package instructions and half of your mixed dye solution.
  4. Wet your flannel shirt and dip it into the dye solution where you want the dye to start.
  5. Follow the package instructions, and every few minutes pull the fabric out of the dye bath about an inch or so. We followed the instructions and moved it every 10 minutes for a total of 60 minutes.
  6. Add the rest of the dye solution to the bucket and keep pulling more fabric out every few minutes until you’ve removed it completely.
  7. Rinse the shirt in warm to cold water until the water runs clear.
  8. Once dry, the dye will lighten in color, so don’t worry if it looks too dark to start.

If you can’t find the color you want, try combining a few colors of fabric dye.

By only using half of the dye solution to start and adding the rest later, we can create a soft ombre effect.

You can choose a dye that complements the colors in your shirt or go wild with colorful combinations.

Pretty in plaid!

Landman fans, how we feeling? The first season of Taylor Sheridan's new drama came to a close on January 12 with the season finale, "The Crumbs of Hope," and it provided viewers with plenty of to think about as tensions between the cartel and M-Tex Oil came to a head — and one character suffered a potentially-fatal medical emergency.

Here's everything you need to know about the Landman season finale, including THAT (potential) character death.

What happens in the last episode of Landman?

Emerson Miller/Paramount+

The last episode of Landman opens after Monty's (Jon Hamm) ruptured aortic aneurysm in episode 9 lands him in the hospital for a heart transplant...if they can find a new heart in time. (I'm getting flashbacks to Dan's heart transplant catastrophe in One Tree Hill). But based on the fact Monty flatlines and Cami (Demi Moore) and their daughters cry over his bed, things aren't looking hopeful.

Meanwhile, Tommy (Billy Bob Thornton) takes over as M-Tex Oil president, and as he works on smoothing things over between the cartel and the oil company, he gets kidnapped by the cartel, who also blow up an oil tank and drive a nail into Tommy's leg for good measure. But just when it looks like Tommy might meet his end, cartel leader Galino (Andy Garcia) wipes out the other members and helps him escape.

Billy Bob and Andy have actually been friends for awhile, but this is the first time they've acted onscreen together! "Andy is such a great guy and great actor, and when we did those scenes at the end of the last episode, it felt so good, because we kind of had us two old veterans going head to head,” Billy Bob Thornton told Variety. “It was quite an experience, and I have to say every moment of it felt real. Tommy’s dealing with someone now who is really smart. The other guys were hired to work for him, but now Tommy’s talking to the man himself. There are advantages and disadvantages to that. Since he is so smart, who knows what Tommy is going to get tricked into?”

How did Landman end last night?

Landman season 1 ends with Tommy returning home with a proposition (er, more like a friendly demand) from Galino that the oil business and the cartel become allies. After all, the cartel's interested in taking part in the industry — and seeing what it has to offer.

“The cartel and the oil industry are kind of these odd neighbors living side by side in West Texas,” co-creator Christian Wallace tells Variety. “Now Andy’s character is thinking he is going to make a change and utilize that proximity in a way that could benefit him.”

Hopefully Paramount+ greenlights Landman season 2 so we can see just what happens between Galino and Tommy in the future...and if Monty makes it out of the hospital alive.

You know we can’t get enough of spray paint and repurposing, and what better thing to repurpose after a weekend of Halloween mischief than all those empty wine, liquor, and beer bottles? Here’s a quick and easy way to create an ombre wine bottle centerpiece – all you need is a few cans of spray paint!

We went for a candy corn motif but any color combination would do the trick!

Materials:
– orange, white, and yellow spray paint

– empty wine bottles, labels removed

– cardboard (for your spray painting space)

– optional: pumpkin, leaves, twigs, candy corns

First, get those labels off your wine bottles. Soak bottles in hot water and then labels should be pretty easy to peel off.

Set your spray paint area. Always spray paint outside, if you can, or in an extremely well-ventilated area.

First, spray paint the bottle white. Then orange in the middle. And lastly, yellow! That’s it!

If you want a little more style, add another layer of white on stop to create a drip effect over the orange. This would look pretty perfect with some wine cork candles.

Let try for an hour or so. Then create a fun fall centerpiece!

How have you repurposed old wine bottles or other containers? Have you checked out our Beer Bottle Bud Vases? Talk to us in the comments below – we love to hear from you.

It Ends With Us has quickly become the most memorable movie of Blake Lively's career after rumors of drama between her and costar & director Justin Baldonimorphed into a full-on legal battle. And after the feud was uncovered, the internet has spiraled over what Blake Lively's relationships with her other costars are like — and whether what's happening behind the scenes of her movies are going to delay them. Well, A Simple Favor 2 director Paul Feig had the perfect response to rumors that another feud between Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick caused Amazon to shelve the movie.

Here's exactly what A Simple Favor 2 director Paul Feig had to say about Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively's relationship.

Paul Feig offers a very promising update on 'A Simple Favor 2'

When a viral tweet claimed that Amazon had indefinitely delayed A Simple Favor 2 because of a feud between Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick, director Paul Feig stepped in to clear up the rumors.

"Despite glowing test screenings, Blake Lively’s refusal to promote—amid her messy legal battle with Justin Baldoni—and growing tensions with Anna Kendrick have derailed the sequel," X user Eric B tweeted on January 10. "Anna is furious. Paul Feig is disappointed. Hollywood is in shock. This isn’t just a movie—it’s an implosion."

"This is total BS. Sorry," Feig said in his retweet that same day. "The movie is finished and coming out soon. Don’t believe anything you read on social media these days."

And Anna Kendrick says reuniting with Blake Lively was "lovely."

Anna Kendrick also spilled on reuniting with Blake Lively, claiming that working together felt "a little bit like riding a bike."

"She lives on the East Coast, I live on the West Coast, so we don't get to see each other often," she told PEOPLE. "But it was lovely, and I think that those characters have such weird chemistry that it's so fun to just get the gang back together."

We don't know many details about the plot just yet but we do know it involves a destination wedding — and Blake Lively's Emily in a very fancy wedding dress. Stephanie and Emily "head to the beautiful island of Capri, Italy, for Emily’s extravagant wedding to a rich Italian businessman," according to the movie's synopsis (via People). "Along with the glamorous guests, expect murder and betrayal to RSVP for a wedding with more twists and turns than the road from the Marina Grande to the Capri town square."
