An Open Letter to Anyone Who Still Loves Pumpkin Spice

pumpkin spice latte

As much as we collectively love PSLs and pumpkin desserts, it's no secret that anything pumpkin-related has become slightly taboo in the last couple of years. We're going to unpack all of that, but let's start off by saying what should be obvious: Just as with your taste in music, film, or art, you should never have to apologize for liking what you like.

Back in the mid-2010s when pumpkin spice was becoming ubiquitous, there was a cultural embracing of the positive attributes of pumpkin; it's warm, it's cozy, it's autumnal, and when combined with a little sugar, it becomes a delicious dessert, making all of those traits just a little sweeter. It's not just Starbucks customers who love pumpkin spice... it's been used throughout modern history in Thanksgiving recipes, holiday desserts, and healthy side dishes.

But after the initial proliferation of pumpkin-spice-everything, the cultural tides started to turn. "Pumpkin spice latte" became something of a dirty word, and PSL-lovers everywhere were maligned for their "basic" tastes and "annoying" obsession with pumpkin. But what was really behind this cultural backlash? Exactly WHY did pumpkin spice become obnoxious to everyone outside its most dedicated fanbase?

The Mocking of Feminine Interests

While enjoying pumpkin flavors is hardly limited to women, the phenomenon of the PSL was widely embraced by women and female-identifying people. You rarely (if ever) see men's t-shirts, socks, notebooks, and home goods displaying phrases like "I Heart Pumpkin Spice." Women in today's culture have been raised to value topics like design, cooking, and decorating, all of which are topics that easily span the divide between a coffee drink and a lifestyle symbol. Therefore, the deliciousness of the PSL was able to manifest in all kinds of ways in female-focused literature and products.

But of course, it wasn't long before people started mocking pumpkin and its devotees. It was soon considered silly, uncultured, and unintelligent to enjoy pumpkin spice. This is because, like many other female-skewing topics (fashion, pop music, interior design), the pumpkin spice latte became synonymous with women's lifestyle culture. And women's lifestyle culture is, as a rule, mocked and devalued by society. But the jokes on the haters, really: Women make 83 percent of purchasing decisions in the United States, which means women's lifestyle culture is a HUGE driver of of our national economy. Additionally, women's lifestyle topics are incredibly valuable for personal growth and empowerment. They channel our creativity, help us grow and fine-tune our skills, and make life fun.

The Misogyny of "Basic"

A term that came out of the woodwork around the same time as the PSL was the term "basic bitch." Around 2015, women were assigned to one of two camps: They were either hipsters or they were basic. As anyone who lived through 2015's internet culture knows, these were coded terms for smart and dumb. It was an insult to call someone basic: Women who liked Taylor Swift, PSLs, and mainstream fashion trends were, apparently, the worst thing to be.

The idea that women who enjoy female lifestyle culture are unintelligent, boring, and just like everyone else is clearly rooted in misogyny. There was no widely used term in 2015 for mainstream-leaning men, and certainly none that carried the weight of the "basic bitch" insult.

Many women decided to take the insult lightheartedly, intentionally christening themselves "basic bitches" and fully embracing the fact that they loved PSLs and anything autumnal. But the lingering cultural distaste for anyone who likes pumpkin is a proof that the "female culture = stupidity" beliefis alive and well in society.

Why You Shouldn't Worry About What People Think

Listen, whether or not you genuinely enjoy the taste of pumpkin isn't what we take issue with. It's perfectly fine to dislike pumpkin spice. But when you dislike the CULTURAL aspect of it simply because it seems "basic" or "silly," the aversion is actually rooted in misogyny.

No one should be shamed for their tastes and preferences, whether that's in music, internet content, or coffee flavors. If you're a PSL lover, know this: It's STILL one of Starbuck's most popular drinks and arguably the most successful coffee flavor of all time... so you're in good company. Never let other people's opinions on "basic" or "mainstream" topics dissuade you from enjoying a piping-hot cup of deliciously sweetened, pumpkin-flavored java.

Making friends as an adult can be difficult but keeping friends? Apparently that's even harder. Miscommunication, Venmo requests, and romance can test even the best of friendships, but you really don't want to ignore any serious red flags in your relationships. A friend who only takes & never gives, someone who never listens, and someone who acts like they're the center of the universe are just a few no-no's you want to keep an eye out for.

These 13 friendship red flags should be deal breakers in your relationship.

1. Acting possessive is a huge friend red flag.

Vitaly Gariev/Unsplash

"You don't have to prove you're my BEST friend by constantly saying it to everyone out loud or excluding people with inside jokes — you can just BE my best friend," says editor Haley Sprankle. Like y'all, friendships aren't supposed to make us feel like an item!

2. They don't care about your boundaries.

Brit + Co

If a friend doesn't care about boundaries you've set in place, that's a clear sign they don't actually value your relationship. One user on X thinks it's a huge red flag if "they do not respect your time, boundaries, energy, possessions, work, privacy, or space. They expect you to change and adjust yourself to their liking."

3. It's a red flag if a friend never pays attention during conversations...

Obie Fernandez/Unsplash

One big friend red flag is when someone never pays attention while you're trying to have a heart-to-heart — or if they're checking other messages. "One of my pet peeves is when people constantly check their Apple watches when we're in the middle of a conversation," says Entertainment Editor Chloe Williams. "Which is also why I will never buy one for myself."

4. Or if they only talk about themselves.

Brit + Co

We all joke that our dates never ask us questions, but the same rule should apply to friendships! Staff writer Kayla Walden considers it a friend red flag if someone "never [reciprocates] questions and [asks] how I am (a selfish needy Gemini here)." So valid.

5. Never learning to work through disagreements should be a friendship red flag.

Diva Plavalaguna/Pexels

"A red flag in friendships is being agreeable on every little thing," @mikaylaxcvi says on X. "I’d much rather be told the truth, lightly & sweetly, than coddled. A grow together type of friendship." Preach.

6. Realizing a friend expects to be the center of your universe is a huge no-no.

Brit + Co

Staff writer Jasmine J. Williams says one issue she finds in friendships is if the supposed friend wants to be the most important person in every situation, like "getting upset because of your work schedule, life's emergencies, navigating newborn stage, etc." No thanks!

7. A friend shouldn't be rude to others.

Joshua Rawson-Harris/Unsplash

It's totally natural to be closer to some people than others. But making a point to exclude everyone around you? Not the vibe. "Red flag: when I notice they make plans without including everyone in the room but they make it loud enough for everyone to hear that they're making plans," says Brit + Co Social Media Assistant Melanie Cornejo.

8. And a friend shouldn't be overly critical.

Matteo Di Iorio/Unsplash

B+C editor Haley also things a friend red flag is when someone is "critical of all their friends' new relationships."

9. Turning every single detail into a competition is a friendship red flag.

Roman Aguila/Unsplash

"Acting like everything is a competition really stresses me out and definitely has the potential to end a relationship before it begins," Entertainment Editor Chloe says. "It just makes every conversation feel inauthentic."

10. And friends DEFINITELY shouldn't talk behind your back.

Brit + Co

Talking crap to other people is a major friend red flag, hello! "If you are friends with someone who talks sh—t about people but smiles in their face later in front of you..Guess what they’ll eventually do to you?" @oriiizgold tweeted.

11. A friend also shouldn't make you feel bad about yourself.

cottonbro studio/Pexels

It's not great if friends "make 'innocent jabs' at you around other people," Social Media Assistant Melanie says. If conversations constantly make you feel bad, then that's definitely not good, y'all.

12. Outright refusing to engage with current issues isn't great.

Hitesh Choudhary/Unsplash

Limiting your social media & news exposure for mental health is one thing, but completely ignoring the state of the world is another. "If you [don't know] and don't wanna know about war crimes, current conflicts, and famine is just you enjoying your privilege and living in your bubble and I see it as a lack of humanity so...red flag," @OvenPsychological485 says on Reddit.

13. And don't forget, YOU don't want to have friendship red flags either!

Prince Akachi/Unsplash

"My friendship red flag for myself is when I notice myself starting to contort into being obsessively helpful & overly accommodating," @pigletish says on X. "Means I don’t feel comfortable, am masking to perform likability & need to check-in on why I feel discomfort." That's a good reminder for us all!

Studio McGee has spent the last decade inspiring us with a blend of accessible and elevated designs, creating beautiful and totally livable spaces. In her 2025 Home Decor Trends report, Shea McGee emphasizes that home decor trends evolve gradually over time, and I couldn’t agree more. Unlike the fast-paced world of fashion, where trends shift every season, these design moves develop organically over time, and that's good for your wallet and taking your time to create a space you love. Get inspired to refresh your home in 2025 with a few new accents, from embellishments like fringe to maybe a little western or seaside art.

Here are Studio McGee's 2025 Home Decor Trend Predictions, with a few surprises!

Photo: Shade Degges | Design: Studio Mountain

Romantic Silhouettes

Take Romantic Silhouettes, for example. This is a trend we've seen steadily gain traction over the past few years. Think curvy furniture, delicate floral prints, and soft blush hues — when curated thoughtfully, these elements can become timeless staples in your home.

Western Cowboy

This is a design trend that totally surprised me, but I'm so happy to see it in the mix. Elements like leather furniture, rustic accessories, equestrian art, even wood walls, shown in this office designed by A1000XBetter, are making an impact in 2025 and beyond. But Shea notes that you can take this trend literally or just be inspired by the look. You can also mix it with other styles to personalize it for you. Add romantic pillows or ruffled tablecloths like McGee & Co. x Loeffler Randall Gardenia Ruffle Border Tablecloth – things you love that make it yours vs. based solely on one trend.

Gavin Carter| Design: House of Rolison

Saturated Colors

Shea predicts that rich hues like deep browns, oxblood red, and earthy greens will continue to dominate home decor colors going into 2025. House of Rolison's bathroom brown is an excellent example of this beautiful trend.

Pattern Drenching

Embracing a single pattern and drenching an entire room in it — from walls to pillows, headboards, and curtains — is a surprise trend for 2025. This maximalist approach, which has been quietly gaining traction, draws inspiration from Arts and Crafts designers like William Morris and has been in and out of vogue since the Victorian era.

McGee & Co.

Embellishments

This is a trend you can easily DIY to add an extra layer of charm to your decor. Think playful details like fringe accents —beautifully shown in McGee & Co.'s Philippa Settee — along with tassels, pleats, ruffles, and rope. It’s all about embracing texture and whimsy, so have fun with it!

McGee & Co.

Seaside Inspiration

Coastal decor has long been an influence in design and you can be inspired by it in many forms, from shell accents to beach-inspired artwork like McGee & Co.'s Distant Coastline art to textured seagrass baskets and jute rugs. Even the soothing hues of the sea — think soft blues, sandy neutrals, and gentle greens — can inspire your 2025 spaces.

November 2024 — Gwen Stefani Almost Walked Away From Blake Shelton

This relationship almost didn't reach a sweet point, according to Gwen Stefani. Since they were dealing with a lot when they decided to date, the "Sweet Escape" singer was ready to leave Blake in the dust. "We had just met, and it was chaos. Both of our lives were in complete turmoil, all over the ground. Nothing could save us at that point," she remembered (via PEOPLE). "There was a point where I was like, 'I can't even talk to you. This is insane. I already have enough problems. This is not happening anymore. We're not going to text or nothing.'"

The key to winning her over was speaking to her through music. "I think he really wanted to impress me, because he doesn't really write songs as much as he used to. And I love writing songs. That's everything to me...That's where I get my fulfillment," she says.

His ability to start writing "Go Ahead and Break My Heart" to send to her became one of the couples first completed songs together. "He sent it to me, and it was a half-written song. He was like, 'Help me finish this.' So I wrote him the verse back — the second verse on the song — and it's just over text," she said."

Dunkin’s winter menu for 2025 is lookin’ pretty sweet. Seriously – 3 out of 5 new drinks on the menu are inspired by cake. Since there’s little I love more than a good, decadent dessert (other than coffee, of course), I’m especially excited about this new lineup!

The Dunkin’ winter menu also has one sweet snack and an iced espresso drink that are both hauntingly similar to what Starbucks has to offer. Is the competition heating up, or is it just me?

The Dunkin’ winter menu dropped on December 31, just ahead of the new year. Dunkin's holiday menu dropped on November 1.

Let’s officially get into it. Here’s everything on the Dunkin’ menu this December to start 2025 off just right!

Drinks On The Dunkin' Winter Menu

@snackolator

NEW! Lava Cake Signature Latte

Lava Cake Swirl flavoring, whipped cream, mocha drizzle, and hot chocolate powder. Now that's a mouthful! That's exactly how this new drink is built – with tons and tons of chocolate. If you've got a strong sweet tooth, this one's for you.

@snackolator

NEW! Lava Cake Coffee

Dunkin' is also featuring the new Lava Cake Swirl flavoring in this creamy coffee. It'll be available to order hot or iced!

@snackolator

Brown Sugar Shakin' Espresso

Um, Starbucks dupe, anyone?! Dunkin's version of the famed Brown Sugar Shaken Espresso looks like it follows a very similar recipe to the Starbies way: espresso (shaken until frothy), brown sugar syrup, and oat milk. I can't wait to try this one and see how it measures up to my routine Starbucks order. It even got a co-sign from Sabrina Carpenter.

Dunkin'

Brown Sugar Oat Iced Matcha Latte

Dunkin' will offer two new in-app exclusive drinks this season, the first being the Brown Sugar Oat Iced Matcha Latte. It's like your average iced matcha latte, amped up with some brown sugar syrup and oat milk. Yum.

@snackolator

Raspberry Lava Cake Coffee

The second in-app exclusive drink on theDunkin' winter menu is the Raspberry Lava Cake Coffee, which features a dose of Lava Cake Swirl alongside a raspberry flavor shot and cream. You'll be able to order this one hot or iced.

Food On The Dunkin' Winter Menu

@snackolator

NEW! Whoopie Pie Specialty Donut

Now, onto the good stuff. The Whoopie Pie Specialty Donut features a halved glazed chocolate cake donut that's filled with vanilla whipped buttercreme icing and topped with a cute lil' buttercreme rosette.

Dunkin'

Iced Lemon Loaf Cake

Okay, yet another Starbucks similarity! This zesty-sweet snack returns on December 31. Dunkin's Iced Lemon Loaf Cake is moist as can be, and is topped with a thick layer of lemon icing.

More Dunkin' Menu Items To Come In 2025

Dunkin'

Dunkin' Valentine's Donuts

Speculation around the Dunkin' winter menu for 2025 also dropped some hints about the chain's Valentine's Day offerings.

According to the buzz, the Brownie Batter (pictured above) and Cupid's Choice donuts will return on January 29. What's even more exciting is that a new iteration of Dunkin's Munchkins will be available, too!

The new Valentine's Munchkins will reportedly be made from glazed chocolate donut holes coated in Valentine's-esque sprinkles. I'm craving them already!
