The Fascinating History of the World’s Most Commonly Eaten Foods

Today it’s easy to go to the grocery store and grab a loaf of bread, a package of rice, or a jar of tomatoes, but do you ever stop and think about where these everyday essential foods came from? Even just a few centuries ago, Europeans wouldn’t touch tomatoes for fear of being poisoned, but in the span of a few centuries, tomatoes native to South America are now more closely associated with Italian cuisine. To unravel this tangle of intriguing food history, here is a short list of some of the world’s most important food staples and their origins.

Bread

Whether or not you choose to consume carbs, it’s undeniable that bread packs a powerful nutritional punch. Perhaps that is why humans have been consuming baked wheat for the last 30,000 years. Flatbread, which does not use yeast, is the most ancient type of bread that humans have eaten. It comes from the pre-historic era when cavemen baked grain-based gruel on stones. Fast forward a few dozen centuries, and modern examples include tortillas, naan, and pita. Leavened bread, on the other hand, requires yeast to create its fluffy, sponge-like texture. This type of bread first began to be “commercially” produced in Ancient Egypt around 300 B.C. (Photo via tomertu / Getty Images)

Tomatoes

The exact origin of the tomato is unknown, but it’s speculated that it evolved from prehistoric nightshade plants millions of years ago. Eventually, the Aztecs domesticated the plant in Central America, where it became a beloved staple in the regional cooking. In the 15th century, Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés brought the tomato back to Europe, and it was slowly adopted. Some countries viewed it as a poisonous fruit, while others thought it was more suitable for decoration than for consumption. Eventually, it has made its way into cuisines worldwide. Potatoes

Potatoes are an ancient crop from Peru that dates back to 500 B.C. The Incas not only cultivated them for sustenance, but they also worshipped them as gods. Naturally, when the Spanish conquistadores saw this, they knew the Incas were onto something special and decided to take a few of these root veggies home with them.

An Irish legend claims that ships from the Spanish Armada wrecked off the Irish coast in 1588, and some of the potatoes on the boat washed ashore. However, it wasn’t until 1589 that Sir Walter Raleigh introduced the tuber to the gardens of his estate that the crop really took root. Surprisingly, it was only just prior to the Irish Potato Famine of the mid-19th century that potatoes began to become a popular crop in America. (Photo via YelenaYemchuk / Getty Images)

Corn

Corn in its modern form is the product of thousands of years of genetic modification by humans. The juicy, yellow kernels of today have almost no relationship to its wild ancestor: a Mexican grass called teosinte, which archeologists can date back 9,000 years. If you look, it’s hard to believe that a grass with only a few seeds became a summertime favorite that provides about 21 percent of human nutrition across the globe. (Photo via alexkich / Getty Images)

Rice

The cultivation of rice began in Asia, but archeologists are still arguing whether or not it began in south-central China or India. What the experts can agree on is that rice was first domesticated between 6,500-7,000 years ago. After it was well-established in Asia, rice migrated to Greece and otherareas of the Mediterranean. Shortly thereafter, rice spread throughout Southern Europe and onto North Africa. Because of its versatility in cooking, it didn’t take long for rice to morph into a staple worldwide. In fact, many cultures even make reference to it in their folklore! (Photo via krungchingpix / Getty Images)

Cassava

Also known as manioc, tapioca, yuca, and mandioca, cassava is a tuber root much like a sweet potato that comes from the Amazonian basin. Today, this root is a primary calorie source in tropical regions worldwide, and it’s the sixth most important crop plant worldwide. Thousands of years ago, the Mayans had already identified its importance and domesticated the crop. They grew cassava in expansive fields, so archeologists know that the population was heavily dependent on this fibrous, starchy substance as a source of nutrition. Some of us know that feeling of a post-lunch stomachache all too well, but many of us are still in the dark about how what we’re eating impacts our digestive systems! Some of the most common foods in your daily routine could be the reason behind your bloating, cramps, or general tummy discomfort. These 6 foods might be messing with your gut – here’s how they can trigger pains, aches, indigestion, and more.

P.S. If you're experiencing frequent stomach pain, it might be helpful to keep a food diary and note when any symptoms occur to help you identify specific triggers. If your symptoms persist or worsen, consulting a healthcare professional is a good idea.

Scroll on for 6 foods that commonly cause stomach discomfort.

1. Hot peppers

Hot peppers like jalapeños, serranos, habaneros, and more contain capsaicin, which lends them their spicy heat. Though capsaicin can totally enhance the flavors of certain dishes, it can also irritate the lining of the stomach and intestines, causing pains, cramps, upset bowel movements, acid reflux, or heartburn.

2. Curry spices

Many common curry spices like turmeric, cumin, coriander, and chili powder tend to stimulate stomach acid production. While they can aid digestion when eaten in small amounts, they can be harmful if you're simply sensitive to them or eat ‘em in large doses. If you have a sensitive stomach, you could experience indigestion, bloating, or a burning sensation from certain spices.

3. Milk

Ah, yes – the ol’ lactose intolerance! Milk obviously contains lactose, which is commonly hard to digest. If you’re lactose intolerant or have a sensitive stomach, consuming milk can lead to gas, bloating, cramps, and diarrhea as undigested lactose ferments in the gut.

4. Cheese

Just like milk, cheese contains lactose – though typically in smaller amounts. Nonetheless, it can trigger plenty of tummy problems. Aged cheese in particular can also be high in fat, slowing digestion.

5. Coffee

Coffee is not only naturally acidic on its own, but it also encourages the stomach to produce more acid. This can irritate the stomach lining and contribute to acid reflux, heartburn, or gastritis (AKA inflammation of the stomach lining). On the contrary, it can also speed up digestion, leading to cramping or less-than-ideal bowel movements.

6. Tomatoes

Tomatoes are another naturally acidic food and can trigger acid reflux or heartburn easily. These symptoms are especially prevalent in people with sensitive stomachs or GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease). The acidity can also irritate the esophagus and cause a burning sensation or indigestion after eating.

While the thrill of waking up on Easter and searching for colorful eggs might feel timeless as a kid, the annual tradition can start to become a little predictable as time goes on (and your children get older).

So, if you want to shake things up this year, skip the same old routine and surprise your family with twists they won't see coming. Here are some creative Easter egg hunt ideas that will make the holiday extra memorable and keep everyone more engaged.

Scroll to see the unique Easter egg hunt ideas you need to try in 2025!

1. "ABCs" Egg Hunt

Dre Dawkcide

First, if you have younger ones, you can turn your Easter egg hunt into a learning experience with an added playful challenge. All you have to do is hide 26 eggs, each of which is labeled with a different letter.

Then, give your kiddo a checklist to mark off each letter as they find it. Not only will this activity help you actually remember how many eggs you hide this year, but it'll reinforce letter recognition in a fun, hands-on way. As an extra bonus, you can even tuck a small prize inside the eggs to match their corresponding letters!

2. Color-Coded Egg Hunt

Eren Li

Now, if you have multiple children who battle to find all the Easter eggs each year, then you know that things can get chaotic and tense. To say goodbye to sibling squabbles, simply assign each kid a specific egg color and matching basket.

If you have two sons, for instance, hide 20 green eggs and 20 blue eggs. They'll know exactly which eggs to search for, and everything will be kept fair since they'll each get to find the same number.

3. Glow In The Dark Hunt

alleksana

There's obviously more to Easter than just the fun of egg-hunting. Nonetheless, for kids, it's often the most looked-forward-to portion of the day, and once it's over, it can be hard to keep them entertained or invested in the celebration.

But with a glow-in-the-dark Easter egg hunt, you can delay that! Just wait until the sun goes down to host a nighttime version of the tradition with the help of glow-in-the-dark paint or glow sticks inside plastic eggs. Your children will be looking forward to it all day (and probably stay on their best behavior as they wait to participate).

4. Advent Calendar Hunt

Jill Wellington

To extend the Easter fun even further, remember that you don't have to limit the festivities to just one day. Instead, spread the joy out with an Easter-themed countdown hunt!

Every day during the week leading up to Easter, hide one egg or goody bag that's filled with treats or tiny surprises. It will build anticipation in an adorable way that gets your kiddos super excited.

5. Traditional Egg Hunt: Simon Says Edition

Eren Li

Growing up, your family might've always put little chocolates or coins inside your Easter eggs. To infuse the tradition with some more action, consider including "Simon Says" and call it "Easter Bunny Says!"

Just place a piece of paper inside each egg that contains a fun instruction, such as "hop like a bunny" or "spin in a circle three times." It's a great way to keep the giggles going and expel some extra energy before the sugar craze hits.

6. Scavenger Hunt

RDNE Stock project

For older kids (or even adults), take your Easter egg hunt up a notch by turning it into a scavenger hunt. Depending on where you're planning the hunt, like inside your home or in the backyard, come up with clues and riddles that correspond with hiding spots in that location.

It adds a puzzle-solving element that can be adapted for tweens, teens, and, again, the older folks who still want to get in on the fun.

7. Reward Hunt

Gustavo Fring

Another smart idea to sweeten the whole deal is turning your Easter egg hunt into a mini reward system. Alongside the typical candy, tuck in notes that offer fun perks, like extra bedtime stories, a chore pass, or even a screen time coupon.

8. Easter Egg & Balloon Hunt

Gabe Pierce

Finally, if you have a baby or toddler who isn't quite ready to participate in the conventional Easter egg hunt, all you have to do is incorporate some balloons to make the activity easier.

First, fill up some helium balloons and tie a chocolate egg to the bottom of each string. Then, you can let them bop around your home or backyard, serving as straightforward markers for your little ones to spot. Not to mention, what kid doesn't love a balloon?!

In less than 6 months, I experienced two devastating events that forced me to gauge my relationship with self care. Tough conversations with my inner circle made me aware that I needed to embrace my "soft girl era", but I didn't know where to start. On certain parts of TikTok, it looked like I needed to surround myself with new home decor or beauty buys, while other people implied it's about living a life that's free of stress.

To cut out the noise, I took a break from social media so I could ask myself what I need to thrive. This resulted in me making a temporary decision about my fertility journey, slowly axing out foods that disrupt my hormones, and choosing things that make me feel at peace in my mind, body, and soul.

Uncover 11 ways having a "soft girl era" can help transform your self-care!

1. It Can Help You Examine Your Relationship With Social Media & The News

Ketut Subiyanto/Pexels

Do you have a healthy relationship with social media and the news, or have you been doom scrolling? I'll be the first to say I've had to set strict limits for myself because it's been too easy to stay glued to gossip sites and what's happening in the world. While it's always great to be informed, there is a such thing as information overload that can affect us mentally and emotionally.

Make an effort to find activities to occupy your time sans scrolling endlessly on Instagram, TikTok, or other news platforms.

2. It Allows You To Be Honest With Yourself If You're An Overthinker

Andrea Piacquadio/Pexels

Have you been allowing overthinking to make you feel stressed? If so, you should try writing down or repeating a few phrases to help you calm down. They're such a big help if you have anxiety because they remind you that you can be present in the moment instead of existing solely in your head.

3. It Opens You Up To Asking For Help

Ron Lach/Pexels

This should be in all caps, but I don't want you to think I'm yelling at you. It's just, I know what it's like to be hyper-independent while embodying the traits of a "strong woman." But, there's some things you can't #GirlBoss or #LuckyGirlSyndrome your way out, and it can be devastating if you don't like asking for help maneuvering a tough event.

I'm still processing an emergency situation I was in after what was supposed to be a routine doctor's visit, so I've been out of my element whenever I lean on my family and friends for emotional support. I usually like to deal with sad or scary situations by myself, but not all things are meant to be shouldered by ourselves.

What I can tell you is that asking for help and receiving it makes life a little more peaceful because there's no extra burden of hurting while trying to portray a role society claims it loves.

4. You'll Become Comfortable Journaling Your Thoughts

Tonette Whitted/Dupe

I sound like a broken record, but I feel strongly about journaling your thoughts. It's a way of processing things that have happened and how you feel about them. Also, it can be a place where you create lists of goals, books you want to read, hobbies you want to try, and more!

5. You'll Give Yourself Permission To Rest

Cora Pursley/Dupe

If you can, push the pause button on being available to everyone for a couple of days. Even if you're an extrovert, it never hurts to occasionally stay in bed and do nothing. Take it from someone who has a hard time resting: you're not "lazy" if you're not always going somewhere or talking to someone.

It's completely fine to reset your mind, body, and soul.

6. You'll Begin To Do Nice Things For Yourself

Abigal Westlin/Dupe

Buying myself flowers is one of my favorite things to do in my soft girl era. Instead of waiting for a man to surprise me with a bouquet outside of Valentine's Day, I regularly adorn my home with tulips or sunflowers. They bring a touch of beauty and greenery to my space which helps on WFH days that feel challenging.

7. It's A Great Way To Rediscover Your Love Of Reading

Daniela Lara/Dupe

Can you think of the one book that makes you laugh, smile, and cry tears of joy? If so, that's the book you'll want to keep near your nightstand. It'll help you break up with your dependence on screen time while also giving you a chance to let your imagination fly. The added bonus is that you'll fall back in love with reading!

8. You'll Genuinely Find Ways To Nourish Your Body.

Payton Butler/Dupe

Being a soft girl isn't just about looking good or reaching for fun things, it's also about nourishing your body with healthy meals. Sometimes we eat and drink things that our digestive system doesn't like, so I'm recommending that you make small changes to your meals.

You can create your own Mediterranean bowl à la Cava or aim to eat more fruits and veggies during the week. Whatever you choose, just remember to start small!

9. You May Even Adopt A Sober Lifestyle

Sivan Weitz/Dupe

Whether you know it or not, there's great joy in grabbing a non-alcoholic beverage with your bestie in the city. You can catch up about life, share your dreams or whatever's troubling you, and sip the greenest beverage that beats the idea of eating green eggs and ham. That's right — I'm talking about matcha.

Is it the pretty green hue we can't stop staring at or does it really taste that good? Let's compromise and say it's both!

10. Solo Activities Won't Feel Daunting

Thyra Morton/Dupe

You don't have to be the next Frida Kahlo to enjoy a paint class! I personally like to engage in coloring or painting because it helps me find something else to focus on. Though it seems simple, the art of having a fun hobby you're not trying to perfect or gain profit from sparks your inner kid's joy.

11. The Beach Will Actually Feel Relaxing For Once

Sash Gabriel/Dupe

You deserve a mini vacation that includes putting beach towel down on hot sand near the ocean so you can read your newest TBR pick. It's soothing feeling the sun on your skin while a gentle breeze blows which is why I recommend everyone try to experience it a few times per month.

It has been over three and a half years since Daniel Craig's final James Bond movie, No Time to Die, premiered in October 2021. Amazon has since acquired the Bond franchise, and now that a new film is finally in the works, fans around the globe are wondering who will continue the legacy of 007.

Following Daniel's majorly successful five-year streak as the spy, he's passing the torch and leaving behind some pretty big shoes to fill. Still, the next Bond has yet to be cast, prompting plenty of speculation online. And the casting rumors — full of very, very attractive men — definitely do not disappoint. Here's who everyone thinks could be the next Bond!

Scroll to see the rumored top contenders to play James Bond next...

Jon Kopaloff/Getty Images

1. Theo James

First up on the watch list is Theo James, most well-known for starring in The Gentlemen andThe White Lotusseason 2. The 40-year-old from Oxford, England, would be the right age for the role, but Theo himself actually pushed back against the idea in 2024.

"Everyone's interested in that because it's a big part of British cultural identity, but that probably wouldn't be me. I do think there are better people for that job," he explained to The Guardianat the time.

"And honestly, it would be terrifying: if you do that, there's no going back. You are opening Pandora's box there. You have got to be willing to live a very different life and have a different life for your family. And that would be pretty tricky."

So, while many still want the iconic role to go to Theo James, fans have begun setting their sights on other potential Bond actors, like Aaron Taylor-Johnson, John O'Connor, Regé-Jean Page, and Henry Cavill.

Andreas Rentz/Getty Images

2. Aaron Taylor-Johnson

Starting with Aaron Taylor-Johnson, he is 34 years old, and his slightly younger age could be beneficial to the franchise, allowing them to hold onto the same 007 for a bit longer. But, ever since The Sun reported that Aaron could snag the role "should he wish to accept it" in 2022, the actor has been avoiding questions about the franchise.

Jeff Spicer/Getty Images

3. Josh O'Connor

Meanwhile, Josh O'Connor previously joked to Deadline, saying, "Wouldn't it be funny if I played Bond?" and the idea really riled up fans. Just like Aaron, Josh is 34, but it appears his quip might've been just that. In fact, in 2025, he claimed to "have no thoughts" on the role, saying he and Daniel Craig "did an Actors on Actors, and then something else happened, and then suddenly I was James Bond. If I am Bond, I don't know about it."

Amy Sussman/Getty Images

4. Regé-Jean Page

Following Regé-Jean Page's portrayal of the Duke of Hastings in the hit Netflix series Bridgerton, he also got thrust into the 007 conversation. But even though he expressed flattery over the speculation in 2023, he hasn't indicated any part in the next Bond film and, at the time, stated to Vanity Fairthat he had "enough on his plate."

Michael Loccisano/Getty Images

5. Henry Cavill

Finally, one more so-called frontrunner for the spy franchise is Henry Cavill. During a 2024 appearance on The Rich Eisen Show, he didn't seem that opposed to becoming the next Bond, either. Nonetheless, when asked whether he thought he'd get cast, the 41-year-old admitted his age may be an issue.

"I have no idea; all I've got to go on are the rumors. The same information you have. Maybe I'm too old now, maybe I'm not, we'll see," he replied.

Arturo Holmes/Getty Images

Other Potential James Bond Actors

Some other actors that fans believe are potentially Bond-worthy include Joe Alwyn, Paul Mescal, Richard Madden, and Idris Elba. Still, it seems that we will just have to wait and see until the next film, expected to be released in theaters by the end of 2027, gets further into production and promotion.
