Oscars 2018: What Frances McDormand Meant When She Said “Inclusion Rider”

The fact that Frances McDormand won the 2018 Best Actress Oscar on Sunday night for her performance in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri should come as no surprise — she absolutely destroyed it in the film’s lead role. What was surprising was how she finished her acceptance speech.

“I have two words for you,” said McDormand. “Inclusion rider.”

The statement undoubtedly sent more than a few viewers on a Google search to define the relatively unknown term. We’ll save you that hassle by breaking it down for you here.

An inclusion clause is a statement in an actor’s contract that stipulates the film must achieve a certain level of diversity in the cast and crew.

The idea was proposed by academic and Stacy Smith, who founded the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative at the University of Southern California. She explained in a 2016 TED talk that casting in US films does not represent the diversity that exists in the actual population. She suggests that having a starring actor demand in their contract that the cast and crew match real-world diversity could go a long way towards making the system more equitable.

“The goal is that talent can take the inclusion rider and adopt it in ways that make sense for their values and their beliefs,” Smith told the Guardian. A rider could be tweaked to ensure that LGBTQ+ people, women, people of color, and people with disabilities are represented.

In an essay published in the Hollywood Reporter in 2014, Smith also had a couple of other great suggestions:

A typical feature depicts roughly 45 characters,” writes Smith. “Most of them aren’t leads or even secondary roles, but rather tertiary characters speaking one or more words. Gender stereotyping in these small parts (police, doctors, lawyers) may be why we see consistent imbalance onscreen.”

The solution? Cast a woman in five of these roles, instead of a man. She also suggests that the industry adopt the NFL’s Rooney Rule, which stipulates that the league consider people of color for head coaching positions. Smith suggests that Hollywood execs should at least interview women for director positions as a way to correct the dramatic gender imbalance in these roles.

So who’s on board? Actor Brie Larson quickly tweeted her support for the idea:

As did Elizabeth Banks:

The concept is even reaching beyond the film industry:

As the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements progress, people are looking for practical ways to make real change. Thanks to McDormand and the work of Stacey Smith, actors may soon be including inclusion riders in their contracts — a giant leap in the right direction.

Should Hollywood actors take up inclusion riders in their contracts? Tell us @britandco.

"Halsey’s screen presence is magnetic and the chemistry between Sydney Sweeney and Paul Walter Hauser is so sweet. A neo-western that puts the eccentric characters of the modern wild west in the sun-soaked spotlight."

FX

9. Fargo

Created by Noah Hawley, Fargo weaves a different story of crime and corruption in each season, all of which are steeped in plenty of dark humor.

Book-to-screen lovers, get ready — Jessica Biel and Elizabeth Banks are starring together in Prime Video's adaptation of The Better Sister. These two are the on-screen duo we didn't know we needed, but now that we have this first look at the series, we can't picture this show any other way. What is 'The Better Sister' about?

Prime Video

As Jessica Biel and Elizabeth Banks join forces in The Better Sister, the story follows estranged sisters Chloe and Nicky, played by Jessica and Elizabeth, respectively, who are brought back together following the death of Chloe's lawyer husband Adam, played by Corey Stoll.

Before the tragedy, Chloe worked as a successful media executive and seemed to live a perfect life with Adam and their teenage son Ethan, portrayed by Maxwell Acee Donovan. Nicky, on the other hand, had been struggling with personal issues, like her finances and staying sober.

As estranged siblings, Chloe and Nicky lived separate lives. But after Adam's murder, they're forced to confront their family history and figure out who was responsible for the crime.

According to Executive Producer, Regina Corrado, the titular sisters have done "biblically horrible" things to one another. So, for viewers, answering the question of who the "better sister" is might not be straightforward.

"It changes minute to minute, hour to hour, in the sense that we're all good and bad. It's all very fluid and ongoing. The question is answered and unanswered and answerable and unanswerable. It changes moment to moment," Olivia Milch explained.

Is 'The Better Sister' based on a book?

And it's no secret that certain book-to-screen adaptations are hit or miss, but according to Burke, she actually "marveled at the creativity and talent brought to this project." Her novel was passed into new hands, but Burke shared how pleased she was with both the production and casting.

"I could not have hoped for better actors than Jessica Biel and Elizabeth Banks, who have captured the complexities of that sibling relationship so perfectly. I cannot wait for everyone to have a chance to watch these episodes," she said.

Sarah J. Maas is keeping readers in the dark about ACOTAR book 6, but that hasn't stopped fans from sharing elaborate theories about its plot! Our favorite ones revolve around Feyre's middle sister Elain and her overdue POV. For five books, we've watched her live in the shadows of her sister even after being thrown into a cauldron by the despicable King Hybern. She's only shared glimpses of her personality, but that's nothing compared to what readers feels she deserves.

Here's what BookTok thinks about ACOTAR book 6 being the moment we see Elain step into her power or worse

The first theory that stands out is one TikTok user @savannahlueckk shared in this video. Her caption says, "i have a theory that everyone is going to switch up on her and love her all the sudden lmao," in regards to Elain. I don't think anyone truly doubts where she's loved, but it's clear they're not allowing her to come into her own either. From there, the text overlay on the video compares Elain to "Rapunzel," calling out how she's been "sheltered and underestimated by everyone around her."

The first comment on the video says, "She is going to be a whole different person once we get her POV and I can’t wait" while the second comment refers to Frozen 2's song "Into the Unknown." "...just her hearing voices and getting frustrated with them and what they mean as well and learning to embrace her seer powers," user @emlechoppaa wrote.

Another theory by @thundernoblechristine refers to Elain's naturally extroverted personality and how she's currently dealing with everything she's experienced. She says, "Elain is unique in that out of all three of these sisters, she is the most extroverted and she clearly likes making friends...So it makes perfect sense to explore Elain's story as someone who processes trauma and gets to know people differently than Nesta and Feyre."

Only one comment mentioned Elain's potential mate which is great! @imaginedrealism wrote, "As goofy as it sounds, I want Elian with none of the people she is shipped with. She deserves someone totally normal not apart of the Far royalty drama, & it would be more interesting to see..."

But, we're not above leaning into the "Elain and Azriel Endgame theory. Tiktok user @abi.reads2 made her own video about why she thinks Elain and Azriel are meant to be together. She starts off reading a passage from A Court of Mist and Fury before revealing there's a point where the book left by the queen mentions "sing me." @abi.reads2 then points out that Azriel is a "shadowsinger," meaning he's able to detect things most people are unable to.

But @Shelbyaj319 has other thoughts. "I think Elain will manipulate them [Lucien and Azriel] into a blood duel or died or whatever and start a war. I think she’s the villain. She should have already denied the bond [with Lucien] by now yet hasn’t," she says.

There's so many different theories that could be right, but only Sarah J. Maas knows how ACOTAR book 6 will end!
