The Oscars Are Changing the Game With a New Category in 2019

It’s hard to believe that awards season will soon be underway, but nominations for the first shows will be here before we know it. While the big finale — the Oscars — won’t air until early 2019, the Academy has already revealed some changes that we can expect to see in next year’s telecast.

“Change is coming to the #Oscars,” the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the group behind the Oscars, tweeted on Wednesday, outlining three key changes. They elaborated further on the developments in a letter from the Academy to its members.

Among the most notable was the announcement that a new category for achievement in popular film is being introduced. Details on the criteria and eligibility have yet to be announced, but giving some shine to major blockbusters that are often left out of critical contention (hello, Wonder Woman!) should help boost attention and ratings.

Additionally, the Academy noted that they’re committed to keeping the broadcast to three hours, and will hand out some awards during commercial breaks in order to deliver a “more accessible Oscars for our viewers worldwide.” The winning moments will be edited and aired later in the broadcast.

Third, the air date for the 2020 Oscars will be moved up from the previously announced February 23 to Sunday, February 9. In the meantime, the 91st Oscars will air as announced on Sunday, February 24, 2019.

Despite the fact that the 2019 Oscars are still six months away, hype continues to build around more traditionally Academy buzz-worthy films. And with the new popular film category, it might mean that deserving but historically overlooked films like Black Panther or A Quiet Place could also have a real shot at more than just technical or costume prizes.

The 2019 Oscars will air on Sunday, February 24, 2019 on ABC.

Although it may be a little intense for the Rudolph-loving, Frosty-watching crowd, you know what it's really all about: Bruce Willis straight up saving Christmas.

You can't help that you're charming, Aries. Your fiery personality just sticks, lighting up the room around you — even when that room is full of your ex-boyfriend's family. Oh, and when it comes to a challenge? Yeah, you never turn those down. Throw this on for a good, holiday-filled laugh...and that little bit of heart that you totally love, too.

Home Alone

Let's face it: being home alone is honestly your dream come true. You know it, I know it, the stars know it. And while you could probably do without two goons skulking around your place, you always find a way to make your house a home, no matter the situation. If you're already picturing eating pizza in a limo, drinking Coke out of a wine glass...I'm honestly not surprised. Live that luxe life, sweet Taurus.

Last Holiday

Queen Latifah's Last Holiday is quite honestly one of the most Taurus movies of all time, TBH. Georgia Bird does everything she can to curate her life, saving money, staying home, and keeping to herself as much as possible. So when she finds out she's only got a short amount of time to live? She decides it's time to expand beyond the four walls of her home and explore life — and the world — around her. I know you love to curate your life, working hard to make it as comfortable and wonderful as possible at home, but this is a good reminder that there's so much more out there for you, dear Taurus. Chase after it!

Gemini (May 22 – June 21)

White Christmas

The duality of Gemini is definitely best summed up with the classic Christmas movie, White Christmas. While I obviously don't subscribe to the belief that you have two personalities, two faces, or any of those other Gemini stereotypes, I do think you have the ability to juggle the many truths that life has to offer. So it makes sense that you could relate to the two couples in this film, working their butts off to save the Vermont inn (I see your work ethic, babe!) and trying to understand their feelings for one another.

Our Little Secret

Remember what I said about duality? Well this plays right into that! When Avery and Logan — former fiancés — show up to Christmas celebrations, they realize they're new significant others are actually siblings...yikes! While they attempt to hide this from the family, obviously hilarity ensues, making them question how they even ended up in this scenario in the first place. While I don't think you want to keep secrets, I do think your ability to hold space for more than one truth could definitely help you out in this scenario — but your true heart would win out in the end, just like this movie!

Cancer (June 22 – July 22)

The Holiday

You've got a lotta heart, Cancer, and so does this iconic Christmas movie. The hopeless romantic in you would already love the idea of a house swap (how dreamy!) between a big U.S. city and the quaint English countryside — and when you add in the dual romances...this is just too perfect for you! You'll especially resonate with Jack Black and Kate Winslet's characters and all their absolutely adorableness.

How The Grinch Stole Christmas

Empathy is the name of your game, and I just know you'd understand that there's more to the Grinch than meets the eye. While he stomps around, loathing everything, you'd be able to comprehend all that loathing is the need for more loving. So when his heart grows three sizes bigger? Yeah, yours will swell too!

Leo (July 23 – August 22)

Elf

You've got a big personality, and you know it, Leo. You can't help bringing your lively energy to every space you occupy — much like Buddy! Your larger-than-life, excitable — and at times, campy — personality matches the vibe of this movie perfectly. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll consider eating spaghetti and syrup just for the gag. All around, Elf is great watch for you this holiday season!

Falling For Christmas

If you resonated with London Tipton as a little girl, this one's for you. I mean, you exude heiress energy (whether you actually are or not), so you'd definitely understand Sierra Belmont's plight. What's so wrong for wanting the finer things in life?! In all seriousness, while you could definitely relate to her princess behavior (in a much more down-to-earth, likable way of course), I also know you find joy wherever you're at — just like Sierra does after losing her memory. This cheesy watch is definitely a must for you!

The 'Freakier Friday' Writer Just Spilled On The Pink Slip Reunion

We're getting closer and closer to seeing a Freaky Friday2. The cat's out of the bag that the sequel treatment is confirmed and actually happening, and movie stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan have been increasingly vocal about the upcoming movie's plot. The dynamic duo, who you can see in 2024's Borderlands and Irish Wish, respectively, are expected to return as Tess and Anna, the mother and daughter that wake up one titular freaky Friday in swapped bodies.

Filming for Freakier Friday finally began on June 24, and we finally have an official release date for the film! Here's everything we know about Freaky Friday 2 so far.

Is the band Pink Slip going to be in Freaky Friday 2?

Anna's pop-rock teen band, Pink Slip, is undoubtedly integral to the plot of the original Freaky Friday, and thankfully, we'll see the band again in Freakier Friday! (Can we get some performances of “Take Me Away” and “Ultimate"?!). "Pink Slip is back together, the band. Yes!” Lindsay Lohan told Jimmy Fallon. “We just finished [filming] in August. It’s just been such a labor of love to make happen. And Jamie [Lee Curtis] and I, even at the table read, we were just smiling so big. I don’t think we were acting well, because we were so happy. But the movie’s funny, it’s really funny.”

"I may or may not have gotten to go to set and been around some pink slip energy," writer Jordan Weiss told me while promoting Sweethearts. "It may or may not have excited my inner child beyond belief because I was a super fan. I was 10 years old when the first movie came out. So 20 years later to get to work on the sequel as part of that team was a dream and, you know, don't meet your heroes unless your heroes are Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis, In which case they're amazing. Meet your heroes."

Before the confirmation, a fewFreaky Friday crew members spilled on whether or not we'll actually see the angsty band in the sequel in an interview with Cosmopolitan.

Screenwriter Heather Hach clearly agreed that the soundtrack played a huge part in the movie's plot. "You take out the band element and I don’t think Freaky Friday would be as popular as it is," she said. "It didn’t feel like a derpy Disney movie. The music was actually really good."

Jaclyn Pearson, PHD, the drummer for the band Lash (who wrote the ever-iconic song "Take Me Away"), teased that Freaky Friday 2 might revisit their discography. "We contacted our record label because we heard there might be a sequel," she said. "We’ve got this whole back catalog. Maybe they could use another song for the film."

Producer Andrew Gunn seemed to suggest the same thing: "We got a draft of a script for the sequel right before the writers’ strike, and it was really good. A writer came up with the most brilliant idea. It uses music and the band in a great way."

Freaky Friday 2 sees Anna with a family of her own, including a daughter and a future stepdaughter. According to a press release from Disney, "As they navigate the myriad challenges that come when two families merge, Tess and Anna discover that lightning might indeed strike twice."

"It's going to be a really freaky Friday," Lindsay Lohan told Good Morning America on June 27, 2024. "Much freakier than you would expect."

"[There's] a lot of love, a lot of fun, a lot of laughs," she continues.

The first set leaks from Freakier Friday are totally dreamy — and they also prove Anna's just like us, because who didn't go from emo-teen to boho-chic? Jamie Lee Curtis' Tess has published a brand new book, and based on her author photo, she's a lot more carefree than the last time we saw her! Are they making a Freaky Friday 2?

Lindsay Lohan said on Andy Cohen's Sirius XM show that Freaky Friday 2 is really and truly happening! However, "I don’t want to say too much,” she said about the potential timeline.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the cast could be on set as early as summer 2024. In addition to Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis reprising their roles, Andrew Gunn and Kristin Burr will produce the movie, Elyse Hollander will write the script, and Ann Marie Sanderlin will executive produce. Nisha Ganatra will direct.

While Lindsay is looking forward to the story, she's “just excited to work with Jamie [Lee Curtis] again and see how much further we can take it," she tells PEOPLE. “We talk almost every other day in general, so I think we're going to have a lot of fun with this."

Landing the original role and moving through production was undoubtedly significant to the actress: she cites her own success with Tess after taking on the job at the last minute, despite being booked and busy elsewhere.

“Had I had all the time in the world to prepare, I don’t think it would’ve been so good,” Curtis told the New York Times. “I just had to be in my body. I was also newly sober and I was able to have a community within the movie-work world. That was a big deal for me.”

Lohan told the New York Times that she was ready and raring to tackle 2003’s Freaky Fridayback in the day after rocking a dual-role in 1998's The Parent Trap.

“I threw myself into everything: accents, green screens, playing two people,” said Lohan. “So I felt comfortable after that. Freaky Friday felt different because I was going through all of the phases of a 16-year-old [but playing a character who was a year younger]. This was the era of Avril Lavigne and punk, and I wanted to experience it. We did white stripes in my hair.”

The fame Lohan endured at a young age didn’t always leave a positive effect, and it’s been a hot second since we’ve seen her fully emerge back into the spotlight. The star’s been busy since – she moved to Dubai, manages her overseas businesses, got married, and recently welcomed motherhood. After all that, Lohan remains eager to act again – and thankfully in a second Freaky Friday.

“Jamie and I are both open to that, so we’re leaving it in the hands that be,” Lohan told NYT. “We would only make something that people would absolutely adore.”

It sounds like Curtis is ready, too. "As I went around the world with Halloween Ends, people wanted to know if there was going to be another 'Freaky Friday.' Something really touched a chord. When I came back, I called my friends at Disney and said, 'It feels like there’s a movie to be made.'"
