How To Design An Outdoor Space That Feels Like Home

outdoor space design

Spring means taking our love of home decor outside in anticipation of summer gatherings and staycationing. Gardens, patios, and decks and more are becoming our homes (not so far) away from home during the warm-weather months, especially if they're comfortable and design-inspired. A poll by the TurfMutt Foundation, in fact, found that outdoor offices are here to stay following the pandemic, while new research by Atlas Ceramics revealed that one of the biggest trends in kitchen design for 2022 is the outdoor kitchen. Need an outdoor space refresh? Here are tips for making your backyard a place for getting cozy and comfortable.

Create Activity Zones

AlyssaRosenheck

First, start with how you use your backyard and map out activity areas (even if you have a small space). A shady table can double as a home office, study zone, art table, or dining spot. A hammock can serve as a spot for napping, reading or studying. A patch of grass is perfect for sports, games and play. A fire pit with cozy chairs is perfect for stargazing and socializing. Maybe you want an outdoor movie set up? An herb or vegetable garden helps kids learn about science too.

"I like to create warm and inviting spaces by incorporating lots of plants and wood elements to further connect to nature," says Memphis-based designer Leslie Murphy of Murphy Maude Interiors. "If you like to host (like me!), look to create multiple gathering spaces so you can easily transition from outdoor dining to congregating with friends and family."

Factor Functionality With Purpose

Molly Culver

"My first tip is to add pops of color, be it in the outdoor chairs, floral arrangements, and even the outdoor decor," says Houston-based designer Mary Patton of Mary Patton Design. "Especially for spring, it seems fitting to utilize bright colors in a space that’s inspired by nature."

We love these yellow garden chairs for a bright, happy pop.

Molly Culver

Take note of any electrical outlets too and see if you need an outdoor-rated extension cord for music or movie watching.

"Incorporate lighting concepts too, such as dimming lights or tea candles," says Patton. "It's so soothing and it adds a moody effect that is perfect for outdoor entertaining."

Get Strategic With Plants

Haylei Smith

Spend a spring weekend sprucing up existing landscaping. Freshen up by weeding, planting flower beds, and filling pots with colorful flowers and greenery.

"Our favorites include banana leaf trees and orchids to add a touch of nature, and high-design planters can be a creative way to show off your own personal style," says Louisiana-based Lance Thomas of Thomas Guy Interiors.

Use trees, shrubs and bushes to add privacy, shade, and camouflage unsightly parts of your yard. Planters with flowers between seating and eating areas bring joy to your space too.

Use Weather-Friendly Materials

Haylei Smith

"I like to use weather-friendly materials and fabrics so the furnishings can last a long time," adds Thomas. "Our favorite is using rattan, it comes in a variety of shades and its eco-friendly construction makes it appealing to any design aesthetic."

Blend Indoor and Outdoor

Lifestyle Production Group

Make your backyard feel like an extension of the home.

"One way to make an outdoor space more eye-catching is to use patterned throw pillows that can take on the color scheme you already have inside your house," says Miami-based designer Brittany Farinas of House of One. "Take similar throw pillows and throw blankets that you would use indoors and use them outdoors! This will make the space appear larger and more cohesive."

Design For Al Fresco Dining

Laurey Glenn

We don't all have the budget for an outdoor kitchen, but you can design an outdoor space that caters to dining with a fresh and fun outdoor dining set, an outdoor rug, and grill for making delicious meals. Tulsa-based designer Mel Bean of Mel Bean Interiorsopted for a Scandi-inspired color palette, light woods, and pops of blue décor for this outdoor space and we're digging the fresh, laid-back vibe.

Following trends too rigidly can leave your space feeling dated and disconnected from your personal style, as they can quickly fall out of favor. Instead, focus on timeless pieces that truly resonate with you to create a space you love, which can eventually save you money on an annual refresh. From bulky recliners to tacky bed frames, here are outdated home decor trends that need to go in 2025. (How are some of these pieces still selling?!) Outdated (and over-rated) furniture trends to retire in 2025:

Wayfair

Dark Espresso Wood

I’m not sure this ever qualified as good design, but espresso-colored veneer was everywhere just a few years ago. Heavy, dark finishes tend to make spaces feel gloomy, and frankly, cheap. Instead, opt for natural, solid woods like white oak or walnut. While they may cost more upfront, they're a smart lifelong investment because of their durability and timelessness.

Wayfair

Matchy-Matchy Furniture Sets

This room is cringe on so many levels. Rooms lack personality when everything matches perfectly, but also this trad furniture with rolled arms and decorative nail heads are a bit gag-inducing. Instead, choose sophisticated styles, from sleek curves to classic and modern silhouettes, paired with vintage pieces for a layered, lived-in look.

Wayfair

The Color Grey

It's had its heyday, but grey needs to go in 2025. It was just so overdone. I admittedly still have a grey sofa from West Elm that is now 10 years old and it *will* go in 2025. Instead, I'll look for earthy, natural, and warm colors to replace it.

Wayfair

Metal Beds

Metal bed frames can feel cold and stark when your bedroom should feel warm and cozy. They don't inspire good feng shui too because it's thought that the energy flows too quickly through metal, creating a sense of restlessness or heightened activity. Not something you want in your bedroom! A wooden or upholstered bed is a much better choice for a calmer, more grounded space to sleep.

Wayfair

Glam French Country

The charm of French country is its simplicity and authenticity — there’s nothing overtly glamorous about it. This bed is a little too "extra." True French country style emphasizes natural woods, organic fibers, and timeless, understated decor.

Shutterstock

Mid Century Modern

There is a timelessness to the clean lines and quality of midcentury modern design, but homes are becoming cozier, less minimal, and leaning into curvier shapes and elevated designs.

IKEA

Bulky Furniture

Heavy-weighted sofas with rolled arms are making way for low-seated, modular sofas in sophisticated shapes.

Wayfair

Futons

Sleeper sofas are becoming more comfortable and stylish, leaving the dorm-room vibe of futons a thing of the past.

Shutterstock

Boho

For those who love this aesthetic, don't worry. Rustic is still in, but in an elevated way with natural fibers, colors, and reclaimed woods still in the mix. That said, it's time to lose the macramé wall hangings, eclectic mix of furniture and textiles, and plants everywhere in rattan pots.

Wayfair

Teal Furniture

While playful and eye-catching, this color is a bit garish. Look for subdued and sophisticated jewel tones for colors that will stand the test of time. Here are home color trends that will be huge in 2025 and beyond.

Wayfair

Barn Door Beds

Barn doors, outside of a barn, are definitely out, but this tacky farmhouse look especially needs to go.

Wayfair

Industrial Anything

Metal chairs, exposed Edison bulbs, kitschy steampunk decor is a home decor scene that needs to stay way back in the past. Update the look with softer, more organic accents like a wood farm table with linen slipcovered chairs.

Wayfair

Recliners

Dad's Lazyboy needs to stay hidden in his man cave or officially go. The bulky chairs, while super comfortable, can dominate a room. Instead, look for accent chairs that are still really comfortable but look sleek and modern.

Shutterstock

Tuscan Kitchens

If you're on the hunt for a first home, you might see this popular kitchen trend from the early 2000s everywhere. Instead, upgrade to a modern Mediterranean look with warm neutrals and natural stone materials.

Wayfair

Glass-Top Tables

Glass-top dining and coffee tables can feel cold and impractical (they require constant cleaning!). Instead, choose wood or stone dining tables for a sturdier, earthier vibe.

Wayfair

Gold Hardware

Unlacquered brass is on trend in kitchens and baths, but this faux gold look that conjures up '80s brass needs to go.

Wayfair

Corduroy Upholstery

Corduroy upholstery may be affordable, but it often ends up looking cheap and dated. For a more refined and timeless feel, opt for fabrics like wool, velvet, or natural linen.

Wayfair

Chevron and Overly Geometric Patterns

Chevron patterns have been on their way out for a couple years now, but 2025 is the time to truly let them go. Buh-bye!

New year, new relationship status. The shift from 2024 into 2025 has already seen its fair share of heartfelt proposals — and its fair share of heartbreak. Believe it or not, we're only a couple of weeks into the new year and there are quite a few splits among our favorite celebrity couples. And some of them I simply cannot believe.

Here are 2025's biggest & craziest celebrity breakups...at least, so far.

Austin Butler & Kaia Gerber Break Up

Presley Ann/Getty Images for W Magazine

Kaia Gerber and Austin Butler might have called it quits (reportedly at the end of 2024), but thanks to a TMZ source, we know they're still on good terms. And that the relationship "simply ran its course."

Jessica Alba And Husband Cash Warren Split

Frazer Harrison/Getty Images

It appears that Jessica Alba and Cash Warren are "moving forward" with a divorce following their 16-year marriage (and after showing up to events without their wedding rings), according to a TMZ source.

Jennifer Lopez And Ben Affleck Settle Their Divorce

Kevin Winter/Getty Images

This breakup isn't technically new information, but the fact Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck settled their divorce is. They'll both reportedly take what they earned during their marriage (and won't pay spousal support). Ben will also keep his stake in his production company with BFF Matt Damon, Artists Equity.

Naomi Osaka And Cordae Call It Quits

Theo Wargo/Getty Images

Naomi Osaka confirmed her split from Cordae in a recent Instagram story. “Hi everyone, just wanted to say that Cordae and I are no longer in a relationship,” she said (via E! News). “No bad blood at all, he's a great person and an awesome dad.”

Brandon Routh And Courtney Ford Announce Their Divorce

Amy Sussman/Getty Images for Entertainment Weekly

These DC Legends of Tomorrow stars announced their split with a joint Instagram post on January 10. "To everyone who has loved and supported us, we have some personal news to share," the post reads. "After 21 years together, and 17 years of marriage, we have decided to begin a new journey and enter this next chapter of life as friends and co-parents. We are now and forever rooting for each other as we move through this wild adventure called life. Our son is, and will always be, our highest priority."

Over the last decade, home decor trends have leaned toward a neutral color palette, with styles like Quiet Luxury and Modern Coastal leading the way. In 2024, earthy neutrals were everywhere, creating serene and nature-inspired spaces. As we head into 2025, color (thank god) is making a comeback. This doesn't mean neutrals and earthy tones are out. Instead, we’re seeing them beautifully complemented by jewel tones, adding depth, warmth, and a touch of richness to our homes. I’m excited to incorporate these striking hues into my own space for 2025!

Here are 2025's biggest color trends for the home.

Coordonné Paints

Aubergine

Purple has taken a backseat in home decor trends over the past few years, but 2025 is set to change that in a big way. From Glidden's 2025 Color of the Year, Purple Basil, to Benjamin Moore's moody and nature-inspired Cinnamon Slate — a rich mix of purple and brown — even Farrow & Ball’s opulent Brinjal and Coordonné Paints' lush Berenjena, deep, rich purples are making a much-welcome return. These shades embody everything we love about purple hues: royalty, luxury, creativity, and a little mystery.

Wayfair

Mocha Mousse

Pantone Color of the Year, PANTONE 17-1230 Mocha Mousse, is a deliciously warm brown that blends two of my favorite things: coffee and chocolate. This cozy, yet refined hue is rich without being overpowering, with a muted sophistication (think: coffee with a splash of cream) that instantly warms up a space. Pantone describes it as the color of comfort, and I couldn’t agree more. “Mocha Mousse is the perfect choice for 2025," says designer Ashley Stark. "Mocha Mousse offers endless possibilities for decorating, whether it’s through a plush rug, a soothing carpet, or as a base for bold pops of color like deep jewel tones or metallics. This versatile shade opens up a world of design options, making it a timeless and adaptable addition to any space."

Brick Red

Brick Red, a warm and inviting hue, is stepping into the spotlight for 2025. Colors like BEHR’s color of the year, Rumors, are embracing the growing trend of burgundy-inspired tones. With its deep red base and subtle brown undertones, Brick Red adds the perfect touch of warmth and depth to your earthy decor.

Chartreuse

Named after the French liqueur, Chartreuse sits between yellow and green on the color spectrum and can range from a neon-like brightness to softer, more muted tones. Its a unique balance of warmth from its yellow undertones and coolness from its green hues, giveing it a versatile quality that gets along with a variety of palettes. Look for it in Sherwin-Williams 2025 Color of the Year Capsuleand Article's Abisko Velvet Sectional.

Anthropologie

Sky Blue

This classic and versatile color can't help but create calm, serene spaces (think bedrooms and bathrooms) while still being fresh and fun. Often associated with the sky and sea, the color pairs perfectly with a variety of styles, from coastal and cottage to modern and minimalist, and complements neutrals like white, beige, and gray for a crisp, modern look. For a softer palette, sky blue, like in Anthropologie's Velvet Lawson Chair, with blush pinks and muted greens for a perfect 2025 color mix.

Graham & Brown

Truffle Brown

Browns remain a dominant force in home decor, and truffle shades like Graham & Brown's Color of the Year, Elderton, are rich, warm and incredibly versatile. Use them in furniture, textiles, and accessories. Truffle brown pairs beautifully with earthy neutrals, soft creams, or even jewel tones, and can be used as a statement wall color or an accent in decor pieces.

Clove

This moody neutral, like one of Sherwin Williams's COY Clove orBenjamin Moore Wrought Iron, add drama and sophistication to any room, from half baths if you want to use just a little to living room and bar areas like this Austin-based design from Arterberry Cooke.

Shade Degges

Dusty Pink

The blush-painted molding in this kids' room designed by Bungalowe elevates the entire space, but you don't have to limit dusty pinks to girl's rooms. In 2025, consider it on kitchen cabinets, in bathrooms, bedrooms, even a home office for a soothing, relaxed, even romantic vibe. This muted shade of pink offers a warm, inviting feel and pairs beautifully with earthy tones like terracotta, beige, and olive green.

Shade Degges

Deep Forest Green

The perfectly imperfect look of this Zia Zellige Racing Green tile complements the refined elegance of this bathroom designed by Karan and Sapna Aggarwal of Bungalowe. Deep, rich jewel tones like deep forest green are grounding spaces and adding a touch of elegance to any space.

Honey

Warm neutrals like honey, soft beige, and warm white complement the shades of rich browns like Dunn-Edwards's Color of the Year Caramelized. Look for it on honey-colored woods and paints for your 2025 refresh!

Viewers who were ready to watch Meghan Markle's new Netflix showWith Love, Meghan January 15 will have to wait just a little bit longer. Meghan decided to delay the show in the midst of the L.A. wildfire crisis, focusing on being more of a good samaritan and placing her focus on the cataphoric fires that have demolished parts of L.A. Here's what to know about the delayed release of With Love, Meghan — plus, Meghan's efforts to provide L.A. wildfire relief!

Scroll to find out everything you need to know about Meghan Markle's With Love, Meghan release date!

When is the new premiere date of 'With Love, Meghan?'

According to Netflix, With Love, Meghan will now premiere March 4.

What has Meghan Markle said about delaying her show?

We're sure Meghan Markle was excited to share her love for cooking and living in California, but the Duchess is more concerned about the tragedy occurring in L.A. She said, "I’m thankful to my partners at Netflix for supporting me in delaying the launch, as we focus on the needs of those impacted by the wildfires in my home state of California," via Netflix.

What have critics said about 'With Love, Meghan?'

Meghan's decision and comment about it come on the heels of some people expressing their dislike for the show. Just last week, Meghan McCain shared her own thoughts about With Love, Meghan.

In a rather length X post, she started by saying, "I was originally a Meghan Markle supporter, I thought she was cool, stylish and refreshing." Her tone quickly changed because she believes Markle not only "disrespected the royal family," but McCain also believes Markle "wants to be American again instead of British aristocracy."

She called the trailer for With Love, Meghan "highly curated, produced, and out of touch" because of the "2 terror attacks in 2 days, major wars raging" and the fact people are facing high grocery prices. As if that weren't enough, McCain decided to throw in, "This is why the world doesn’t like you, nothing else. Just completely and utterly tone deaf to the moment" which feels more based on an emotional opinion than fact.

While this criticism came before the terrible L.A. fires struck, it's in line with a lot of criticism Meghan's faced since. However, PEOPLEspoke with an "industry insider" about why they feel Meghan Markle truly decided to delay With Love, Meghan. "Delaying the release of With Love, Meghan was likely an easy decision for her. I don’t think she could imagine putting out a show centered on joy and hosting when so many people in her home state no longer have homes to host people in," the source said.

They also touched on the continued criticism the Duchess is once again facing for her decision not to premiere her show right now. "I think it’s sad that critics are saying she’s only doing this to avoid the fires overshadowing her show. We’re all human, and we’re dealing with a catastrophe."

How have Meghan Markle and Prince Harry been helping those affected by the L.A. fires?

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are doing their best to help those who have been displaced by the L.A. fires. They've since made their California home a safe haven for those who have been displaced and have been actively assisting in other ways.

For one, they showed up at the World Central Kitchen in Pasadena, California to "help distribute food and supplies to victims of the Eaton fire" last Friday, January 10 (via PEOPLE). At the time, Mayor Victor Gordo said the couple cared about being "as helpful as they can be" and that "they took the time to meet the people that are affected."

They've also listed resources for those who are inspired to help victims as well on their official Sussex site.

We commend Meghan Markle for doing everything she can to assist with L.A. wildfire relief, and TBH we think that's what others should be focused on instead of critiquing her every move.
