Meet the Maker: LauraLe Wunsch of Oxgut

In this edition of Meet the Maker, I’m excited to introduce a maker who creates objects that are totally unexpected. LauraLe Wunsch’s company Oxgut, helps turn decommissioned fire hoses into beautiful mats and home goods. Talk about upcycling! Between color, stitching, and wear and tear, each piece is not only beautifully designed, but it also has a unique and heroic story.

I love LauraLe’s perspective on making and design. Read her story below, and stay tuned to the end. LauraLe and Oxgut have a special offer just for Brit + Co. readers. You can also catch Oxgut on Kickstarter for the next 10 days or so. Please support them!

Give us a brief intro of yourself

I grew up in a small town called Clintonville, Wisconsin, population 4,587. The primary industry in Clintonville is actually Seagrave fire trucks. (Little did I know how ironic this would become!) My parents instilled a tough work ethic in me at a young age. Saturday mornings were about chores, never cartoons. Maybe that’s why I wanted so badly to work in film and video. After an undergrad at UW-Madison, I left Wisconsin for the sunnier climbs of Orlando, where I spent some time working with Disney Film & Tape, Nickelodeon, and various other production companies. I later went back to Wisconsin and worked at Lands’ End—writing and cross-training within the company as a part of a customer acquisition team—an invaluable experience, and one that, though not clear at the time, plays out daily in my current path. In 1999, I moved to San Francisco, where I’ve worked in advertising as an agency producer for over 14 years. Much like bringing creative teams together to bring an idea to life through video or film, I now collaborate with artisans and makers to give new life to this incredible material with a heroic past—fire hose. They say you’re the sum of your experiences. I think that’s true.

What first gave you the idea to make Fire Hose mats?

I first started working with fire hose by sharing it with a couple makers I’d been working on other projects with. We fell in love with the material instantly, started experimenting with it, and forming loads of ideas. We started making furniture first, actually. But, when it came to sewing, none of us had the specific tools needed. So, we invited a great designer to meet with us—Ringit Gurlich —the brainstorming continued, and one day Ringit said, “How about a mat?” And we took it from there.

What does the making process look like?

I consider myself privileged to collaborate with different makers. What do I see as the common denominator? Addiction. If you wake up thinking about a project, and stop working at the end of the day only because you can no longer keep your eyes open—you’re a maker. The artisans I work with are amazing. We spend some time on sketches, but for us—it’s really about the tangible prototype. From there, we work on production prototypes, then short runs, always refining. Perhaps my greatest learning in the past two years has been just what it takes to take something from a one-off design to actual production. Time, funds, resourcefulness and lots of patience. With regards to the mats, I still enjoy laying out each mat myself, pairing unique colors and stenciling, often with a specific recipient in mind. It’s one of my favorite things to do. And I will do it until I can no longer keep my eyes open.

How do you come up with your designs? Do you design them yourself?

At Oxgut, we are exploring generally unchartered territory with reclaimed fire hose. In a perfectly linear world, (this is the producer side of me talking), our pieces are first designed in response to my vision for a product line that lives together and best introduces this fairly new concept (and new company) into the marketplace. We want to get great design into people’s hands, and get them to fall in love with fire hose the way we have. However, there is another key driver in our specific designs – the fire hose itself. More often than not, we are inspired by fire hose we’ve never seen before, one of our designers comes up with something completely unexpected, and we just have to do it. Our house slippers are one example of that.

What other types of materials are you interested in repurposing?

Some pretty cool discussions are emerging around ways to incorporate other reclaimed items into new pieces. These types of items will likely become available in limited runs on our web site in 2014. But, the fire hose will always be the hero in our work. It keeps us very busy for the moment.

Which project are you proudest of?

Answering this would be like saying which of your children you love most. Each of our pieces really is personal in the work that goes into it, as well as how they resonate with an individual buyer. The mats are the most immediate gratification at the moment. When someone chooses their unique mat, I know the hard work that’s gone into each and every one.

What other creative hobbies do you have?

I like to bake cakes.

How do you think the analog world is changing as the digital world continues to boom?

This is such a great, complex question. One that sparks long conversations not feasible for this space. So, I will say this:

Analog and digital will eventually hold hands. They are already flirting quite heavily. [Editors note: I LOVE THIS QUOTE!]

To me, “Analog” in terms of product design, applies to artisans, industrial designers, filmmakers, real storytellers, and even pie makers. Trained artists that take time to craft in an organic way.

Our digital world today offers ever-improving design tools and room to experiment and fail with less risk and expense. Digital = art + speed in production + more product + consumer access to those products + choice and two-way communication. It’s fantastic. And, interestingly enough – digital sometimes points us back to a nostalgia for analog. Look at the return of turntables, letterpress, slow-cooking and wooden speakers. Even… jazz! The temptation is to run with ideas as fast as we can.

However, for some artisans, this all encompassing “digital” model creates a bit of… stress, because they’re now looking beyond their craft and wondering if they can compete on a larger level. Example: “How can we make a quality product in the U.S. that will last a lifetime… and still compete with the masses of disposable product online that are produced at half the price?” It’s a tough discussion. With Oxgut, I work to create a space in which our designers can do what they do best, with the tools that work best for them, and leave the handholding to me.

Have you fallen in love with Oxgut yet? Then I have great news for you! LauraLe is offering Brit + Co. readers free shipping on all non-furniture items for the next month. Just email info@oxgut.com, and let them know you found them on Brit + Co.

If you’ve ever searched the internet for lettering inspo, you’ve probably seen Lauren Hom’s work. Her California-based design studio, Hom Sweet Hom, has done work for clients such as Starbucks and Google, and has a new exclusive collection with Studio Ink. She is also well known for her beautifully lettered “Daily Dishonesty” sayings and making money off her ex-boyfriend’s tears. Still not convinced of how cool Lauren is? Get this: Her life motto is “Work hard, snack often.” If those aren’t true pearls of wisdom, I don’t know what are.

Lauren recently teamed up with Studio INK to create a line of beautiful, colorful, quirky greeting cards. In true Lauren Hom fashion, her cards are super relatable and speak the truth (i.e. “Birthday Calories Don’t Count”).

And now, for our chat with Lauren.

Where are you based?

Traveling around the world for a year right now. Previous home base was Brooklyn, New York.

What inspires you? Why do you love to design, create and make?

I’m inspired by life — from inside jokes with friends to exploring new cities and cultures, my work is mostly inspired by my experiences. Aesthetically, I’m inspired by the colors, patterns, textures and signage of all the places I travel to.

I’ve always loved to make things with my hands. Whether it’s baking a cake or painting a mural, I really enjoy making something out of nothing. Sometimes I’ll step back from something I’ve drawn or painted and think, “Whoa, did that really just come out of my hands?” It’s a great feeling, and I think this feeling is what keeps me moving forward.

What’s one piece of advice you’d share with other makers?

Never stop making!

Tell us how technology has changed and supported what you do.

I love the speed, precision and efficiency that technology gives me. All of my work starts out on paper with pencil and ink, and then with the help of a scanner, Photoshop and a tablet, I can edit, color, rotate and paint my letters any way I want to. 50 years ago, I would’ve had to do all of it by hand. It’s really incredible.

How do you get into the creative flow? How does it feel?

A good workflow is my happy place. Everything falls into place and I go into a sort of happy trance. I find that I get into the creative flow by writing down ideas as soon as they come to me. There’s something magical about the birth of an idea — the thought that I could’ve just come up with something that has never crossed anyone else’s mind is so exhilarating. Writing things down (on paper, in my phone notepad, etc.) as soon as they come to mind is definitely a catalyst to my creative flow.

Oh, and having a few really good go-to playlists is key when I’m in a drawing groove. Having to stop and change songs is super disruptive.

What is the story of how you got to where you are today?

When I was 18, I moved to New York City to attend the advertising program at School of Visual Arts. After graduation, I landed my dream job at a big advertising agency but burnt out within a year. Luckily, I had been working on illustration passion projects on the side, so I had enough confidence to leave my full-time job and begin freelancing. Leaving the comfort of my nine-to-five job was scary, but when I put myself in a sink or swim situation, I worked harder because there was more to lose.

What other makers inspire you?

These amazing ladies making unique things:

What is the weirdest, most unusual or worst job you’ve ever had?

In college, I designed characters for a Facebook game that was like Farmville for stoners.

What other things do you love to make?

I hand-sewed this sexy cheeseburger + fries Halloween costume that I am super proud of: I’ve worn it seven years in a row.

Small-scale artisans make our world go round, and we’ll take every chance we can get to celebrate them! That’s why we teamed up with Blurb to put on our first-ever Maker B-School, a night filled with inspiring makers, tasty (and photogenic!) cocktails and a healthy helping of maker wisdom from some of the best in the industry.

Consider this your virtual tour :) First stop: Blurb’s station!

BLURB

We have MAJOR respect for this company. Using their tools, any maker (or regular Jane!) can publish a print book, magazine or ebook, and therefore make their brand that much stronger. Blurb has done wonders for the maker community, and we’re incredibly honored to partner with them.

CHRISTINE HERRIN + ADOBE

We’re all about hands-on project stations, and Adobe definitely delivered. They paired up with Christine Herrin, who makes seriously beautiful zines using Adobe InDesign, and provided inspirational booklets for all of the attendees.

Excuse us while we crush HARD on Christine’s designs — we can’t get enough of them.

LAMBERT FLORAL STUDIO

Next up is Sammy Go of Lambert Floral Studio (yay for maker dudes!) with a jaw-dropping, bountiful bouquet, some impressive knowledge of how to grow a business’s social community and possibly one of the most tasteful product catalogs we’ve ever seen. Can you bring your flowers to all of our events, please?

See what we mean by an impressive catalog? This thing is downright dreamy.

CRAFT + COCKTAILS

Ashley Rose Conway of Craft + Cocktails whipped up tasty piña coladas and spiked pink peppercorn lemonades all night, and also dished out some expert tips on cocktail photo styling. We’ve already been following her on Instagram for ages, so it was a real treat to get a behind-the-scenes look!

These babies were definitely Insta candy :)

ETTA + BILLIE

Alana Rivera, from the artisanal soap brand Etta + Billie, talked shop and shared best tips for building an authentic brand. We can’t decide what we like more: the marvelous fragrances or the tasteful, elegant packaging.

JOSHU + VELA

The team at JOSHU+VELA construct bags, wallets and accessories made entirely of natural materials, and they’re manufactured right here in SF — by them! It was a pleasure to have them showcase their brilliant products and share their perspective on brand identity. We’re itching to take a leather-working class with them, if they’ll have us ;)

PORTRAITS TO THE PEOPLE

How cool is this — Sarah Deragon of Portraits to the People used our DIY studio to provide headshots for the attendees!

After getting zhuzhed by a professional makeup and hair stylist, makers would get a chance to take a new headshot by Sarah, one of the top photographers in the Bay Area. Neat, huh?

THE FOOD!

Oh, did we mention the incredible food provided by SF favorite, Vive la Tarte? Tied for most delectable treat was this INSANE bacon-wrapped fig and an unbelievably satisfying creme brûlée tart — but we’re not playing favorites.

Despite the fact her first role was at the age of 16, 62-year-old Demi Moore just took home her first-ever major acting award at the 2025 Golden Globes for playing Elizabeth Sparkle in The Substance. While the win is a new kind of victory, it's her acceptance speech that truly made the most impact.

Watch Demi Moore's emotional acceptance speech at the 2025 Golden Globes below.

After a producer told her she was a "popcorn actress" in her 30s, Demi Moore "made that mean that [accolades weren't] something that I was allowed to have."

The actress "bought in" to the idea that she could make super successful movies but never get acknowledgement for them. "I believed that, and that corroded me over time, to the point where I thought a few years ago that maybe this was it," she continues in her speech. "Maybe I was complete, maybe I've done what I was supposed to do. And as I was at kind of a low point, I had this magical, bold, courageous, out-of-the-box, absolutely bonkers script come across my desk called The Substance."

In an era where women are constantly fighting the idea that we're too much — too needy, too emotional, too loud — while also battling the narrative that we're not skinny, young, or pretty enough, The Substance showed Demi that "you're not done," she says. The movie follows 50-year-old Elisabeth Sparkle who's fired from her aerobics TV show because of her age...and winds up buying a black market serum to reconnect with a "more perfect" version of herself (played by Margaret Qualley). The movie made waves with its commentary on beauty standards, and the markets that profit off them.

"In those moments when we don't think we're smart enough or pretty enough or skinny enough or successful enough, or basically just not enough, I had a woman say to me, 'Just know you will never be 'enough,' but you can know the value of your worth if you just put down the measuring stick.'"

"And so today," Demi continues, "I celebrate this as a marker of my wholeness and of the love that is driving me, and for the gift of doing something I love and being reminded that I do belong."

After her win, Demi Moore had another special moment when Entertainment Tonight showed her her family's reaction! "They're a vocal crowd," the actress said of daughter Scout Willis' video showing the family screaming at the top of their lungs. "I don't have my glasses with me, so I haven't been able to read any of my messages," she jokes. "But as soon as I am finished they will be my first FaceTime."

"Everything I do is for them," she continues. "It's for my daughters, for my daughter's daughter. I hope in that same way that that translates out also for all women."

We're sending a major congratulations to Demi Moore on her Golden Globe win! And there was one other big surprise at the awards show: Zendaya showed up rocking a ring on THAT finger. Read all about it!

If I'm completely honest, there are very few celebrity couples I care about the way I care about Tom Holland and Zendaya. Aside from the fact this couple is like a walking friends-to-lovers plotline IRL, and are both power houses on their own, these two actors and philanthropists are just unstoppable together. And Zendaya also showed up to the 2025 Golden Globes rocking a new ring on THAT finger. These two keep their relationship pretty private, so here's the latest news on it.

In an interview with GQ, Tom Holland opened up about his relationship with Zendaya and how their relationship to fame has impacted everything. “It was quite strange and weird and confusing and invasive,” Zendaya agrees. “I think loving someone is a sacred thing and a special thing and something that you want to deal with and go through and experience and enjoy amongst the two people that love each other."

The London premiere of Dune 2 was very eventful. Zendaya basically broke the internet by wearing a Mugler "Machinenmensch" robot suit (before changing into this chic black dress from Mugler by Casey Cadwallader), a certain actress spoiled her appearance in the movie by showing up to the carpet, and Tom Holland and Zendaya were spotted at the afterparty together. I love the care and attention Tom shows Zendaya (I, too, would be overwhelmed if I was surrounded by paparazzi like in this video of the couple), and I hope they got to unwind after a crazy night!

February 21, 2024 — Zendaya Says Tom Holland Has The Best "Rizz"

When asked who has the best "rizz" (short for charisma) in the Dune 2 cast, Zendaya immediately pivots and makes the answer more personal! "Everybody's kind of got their own [rizz]," she tells Buzzfeed. "I think someone who has beautiful charisma, not on the Dune cast, but...it works for me, is Mr. Tom Holland."

"I'm more shy and kind of quiet, so it takes a little bit more to pull me out of my shell but he's great at just talking to people and getting to know people," she continues. "He's just naturally very good at that. Or as for me, I've definitely had to pull it out of me a little bit. He's got that natural gift."

March 17, 2024 — Tom Holland And Zendaya Watch A Tennis Game

Ahead of Zendaya's spring movie Challengers (in which she plays a tennis pro-turned-coach opposite Mike Faist and Josh O'Connor), she watched the BNP Paribas Open Men's Final at Indian Wells Tennis Garden. Alongside Tom Holland and her assistant Darnell Appling, who she frequently calls her brother, Zendaya got comfy in a cream-colored tennis skirt, tank top, and zip-up hoodie ensemble. Spring really is here!! My favorite part of the afternoon is when Tom Holland and Zendaya sang along with Whitney Houston's "I Wanna Dance With Somebody."

April 9, 2024 — Zendaya Raves About Tom Holland

In her Vogue cover story for May 2024, Zendaya talks a lot about how fame has affected both her life and Tom Holland's. “His [career] changed overnight. One day you’re a kid and you’re at the pub with your friends, and then the next day you’re Spider-Man,” she says. “I definitely watched his life kind of change in front of him. But he handled it really beautifully.”

That star power was evident in 2022, when Tom Holland and Zendaya spent the afternoon at the Louvre in Paris...and almost broke the internet. “You just kind of get used to the fact that, 'Oh, I’m also one of these art pieces you’re going to take a picture of. I just gotta be totally cool with it and just live my life,'" Zendaya continues. (She also says that when the museum let them walk around after-hours, "it was like Night at the Museum.”)

This spring, Zendaya can't wait to see Tom Holland in his London production of Romeo & Juliet: "[I] could not be more proud. I’m going to try to see as many shows as I possibly can.”

April 10, 2024 — Challengers Premieres In London

Tom Holland showed up for the London premiere of Challengers, and got to support Zendaya in the sweetest way. In this video captured at the premiere, you can see Tom and Z share a hug and a kiss on the cheek during the evening. Even the smallest gesture can mean a lot during a busy night, and I love how in sync Tom Holland and Zendaya are!

The latest viral clip about Tom Holland and Zendaya also has to do with Challengers. During another Challengers press tour stop, Zendaya's overjoyed to be presented with a bouquet of gardenias. “These are my favorite flowers!” she exclaims. When asked if Tom Holland buys her flowers, she points at the camera and jokes, “I hope he's watching!”

While not every girlfriend necessarily wants a bouquet, every couple definitely has to figure out each other's love languages so they can get to know each other better — and apparently A-listers are the exact same!

August 31, 2024 — Zendaya And Tom Holland Match On A Day Date

After a summer starring in Romeo and Juliet, Tom Holland took a late-summer stroll with Zendaya in Calabasas, California. They also ended up wearing matching white tanks (Zendaya styled hers with trousers and ballet flats, while Tom opted for cargo-esque joggers and white sneakers) for the ultimate twinning moment.

October 15, 2024 — Tom Holland Launches A New Company With Unexpected Help From Zendaya

After going sober in 2022, Tom Holland announced on October 15 he was launching a non-alcoholic drink company called Bero. “When I got sober, I started exploring the world of non-alcoholic beers and realized there was space for me to fit in,” Tom says in an interview with Forbes. “My first year sober was really difficult, and had I had Bero, I think it would have been easier.”

“Zendaya hates beer, like, absolutely hates beer," he continues. And when she helped with the taste testing, a joke helped guide the overall brand. "She does not drink beer at all, and the first round of testing she was like, ‘Wow, these are really tasty’, and I was like, ‘Well, that's probably not a good sign.'"

And at the launch event for Bero in New York City, Tom and Zendaya wore matching shades of burgundy! Z stunned in a floor-length leather dress while Tom paired a short sleeve sweater with black trousers.

October 15, 2024 — Zendaya Reveals Why She'd Never Take A Dance Class With Tom Holland

While speaking to Teen Vogue for her partnership with On, Zendaya reveals she'd probably avoid dance classes with Tom Holland because "he's too good, it would piss me off," she jokes. "I would want to take someone who could be equally as bad as me."

"Kayaking, I would choose Tom because I think that, if I can remember correctly, with the kayak, you have to be in sync with the person," she continues. "And I think it would be hilarious because we are both very controlling and we both want to be in charge. So it would be funny to watch us be like, no, we're going to go this way. No, we're going to go that way. And I think it would be a good story after the fact."

October 31, 2024 — Tom Holland Reveals Googling Zendaya Eases His Anxiety

While appearing on an episode of Samah Dada’s On the Menu podcast, Tom Holland spoke about how protective he gets over Zendaya, which, if you ask me, is pretty clear after that viral video of her getting swarmed by paparazzi — and him physically getting in the middle.

“I’m not on socials, and I delete [the apps] when I’m not using [them],” he tells Samah. “So sometimes I — it’s more of a bit of an anxiety thing...I just give it a little Google, look [through] the news, and I’m like, ‘She’s good. We’re fine.'"

November 13, 2024 — Zendaya Reveals Working With Tom Holland Is "Like Second Nature"

In Vanity Fair's new Hollywood 2025 issue, Zendaya opened up on what it's like to work with her partner, and reveals "it’s actually strangely comfortable."

"It’s like second nature, if anything," she says. "You feel extra safe with the person you’re acting beside. I love working with him. He’s so talented, and so passionate about what he does. He always gives things one thousand percent, even if he’s absolutely worn down. I really appreciate that about him. It feels pretty normal. That’s how we met. Literally, at a chemistry read."

I'm sure that was one heck of a chemistry read!

November 24, 2024 — Tom Holland & Zendaya Have A Cozy Date Night

Tom and Zendaya went out for a pint to wrap up the weekend, heading to Foxhole to sample Bero "in the wild," according to Tom himself (via Instagram stories). And the actor ended up sharing a super cute photo of Zendaya in a red top with a gold necklace, a menu, and her cell phone covered in a grippy phone mount that a lot of TikTokers use to attach their phones to the wall. Does this mean there's a backlog of Zendaya TikToks?!

One People sourcealso reports the couple was "very relaxed and very chatty together" at Trident Booksellers & Cafe in Boston during a Friday morning breakfast. Sweet!

December 2, 2024 — Tom Holland & Zendaya Are Reportedly Ready To Settle Down

We all know that Tom and Zendaya are homebodies, and it appears they're only getting cozier the farther they get into their relationship — especially as friends like Robert Pattinson start their own families! “As Tom and Zendaya move closer to having a wedding next year, basically living like a husband and wife already, and continuing to book multiple film projects together, Rob is cheering them on,” a source tells Life & Style. "If things keep going in this direction, Rob is going to figure into their wedding as a best man or groomsman and he absolutely wants the new, little families they are starting to be close going forward."

“For Tom’s part, he’s seen up close how settling down, getting serious and having kids has changed Rob,” they continue. “Tom wants that life for himself and Zendaya, sooner rather than later.”

If Tom and Zendaya really are planning on getting married, and Robert Pattinson ends up in the wedding, I'll cry! And I just know Zendaya's wedding dress is going to be THE look of the decade.

January 6, 2025 — Tom Holland & Zendaya Spark More Engagement Rumors

Zendaya showed up to the 2025 Golden Globes wearing a brand new diamond ring — and the internet is convinced her and Tom are engaged. When an LA Times reporter asked if the actress was engaged, Z reportedly "smiled coyly and shrugged her shoulders mysteriously."
