Sometimes you just can’t put your finger on it — some people just light your fire in a way you’d never expect. But love’s elusive unpredictability also has its counterpart: Certain statistics, such as age difference and length of the relationship, have their place in relationship success. Author and relationship expert Ty Tashiro believes that the very personality traits that contribute to intangible infatuation can also be a very tangible predictor of how healthy your relationship will be.

Ty acknowledges that sometimes fate just takes the reins and runs its course. However, studies show that personality traits are pretty stable across the human lifespan — which means, according to Ty, “picking a partner with great traits will give you access to those traits for the rest of your life.” Scroll on for seven traits that might just predict the success of your relationship!

7 Traits That Can Predict Your Relationship Success

1. Contempt: Contempt in a relationship is derived from being demanding. If your partner demands a lot of you, you most likely won’t be able to cater to all of those needs. The tension created in these situations almost always spells disaster for those involved.

2. Withdrawal: Withdrawal is the opposite of demand. Usually one partner demands something — say, that the couple move to accommodate a new job — and the other feels hopeless in the face of demands and withdraws completely. This situation generally repeats itself until the couple comes to terms with the realities of the relationship.

3. Emotional Stability: There’s hope yet! While contempt and withdrawal are negative traits to be on the lookout for, emotional stability, says Ty, is arguably the number one predictor of relationship success. “If I had to pick a partner based on personality traits in a draft, my first-round pick would be emotional stability,” he says.

4. Kindness: Don’t let the nice guys (or girls) finish last. While kindness is a top-three sought-after trait for women, Ty believes that people “don’t give it the priority that they should. Kind people don’t do relationships as ‘zero sum’ — they believe and trust that things will work out in the long run.” And because of that quality, they usually do.

5. Social Dominance: Let’s face it: Social dominance is sexy. People who are socially dominant are generally high-performing and have higher levels of leadership attainment. However, Ty argues that this primitive human trait isn’t necessary anymore. “Like wisdom teeth,” Tashiro says, “social dominance doesn’t do us any good and hurts us in the end.”

6. Novelty Seeking: Novelty seekers are sexy. They’re the people whose Instagram feeds are ablaze with new destinations, experiences and friends. And while novelty-seeking is by no means a bad thing, too much of it can cause someone to become easily bored with a relationship.

7. Self-Awareness: These traits are null without any awareness. If someone has negative traits (which we all do), being aware of them is key to helping a romantic partner adapt and respond to their effects.

While these traits are correlated to relationship success, Ty reminds us that the best measuring stick when evaluating our partner is our own gut. “We as humans are pretty good natural psychologists,” he says. “Perhaps better than anyone, we can predict and read these traits, especially in someone we’re smitten by.”

As evidenced by his passionate speech at InStyle's inaugural Imagemaker Award, John's no stranger to expressing his love for his wife. Olivia received the Woman of Impact award which seeks to celebrate a celebrity who's used their platform to shed light on something they genuinely care about (via PEOPLE). John used the time he presented the award to Olivia to talk about the breast cancer diagnosis that rocked their worlds.

"About a year [after learning of her diagnosis], Olivia shared her story," he began. "This was a cancer that was not detected from a BRCA gene test, it was not detected by a mammogram. It was detected because she took a heretofore not-that-known test called the lifetime breast cancer risk assessment test and they found that she had a 37 percent chance of breast cancer. And about a month later, she was having a double mastectomy. She shared her story to help anyone she could. According to the National Cancer Institute, in the week after Olivia shared the story of her breast cancer journey, there was a 4,000 percent increase in women visiting the breast cancer risk assessment. That was the first week. Olivia saving lives by speaking her truth is not surprising to me."

November 12, 2024: John Mulaney Reveals Why Olivia Munn Drug Tested Him While Pregnant

In an article for GQ, John Mulaney and Olivia Munn got radically vulnerable about his recovery process. Olivia describes John's post-rehab self — and early on in their relationship, at that — as really unsteady and unsure of his sobriety. She says, "It was like watching a man in a tsunami. I was watching someone newly sober, at the edge of a cliff, and I didn’t know him well enough to help him."

John told her he was afraid of relapsing, but Olivia also explains that her pregnancy didn't seem to be what scared him or fueled his relapse fears. She says, “That’s the one thing that made him seem light and happy. I remember he was really excited to tell his parents.”

Still, Olivia wanted to be an active participant in John's recovery, so she started drug testing him randomly — all while she was six months pregnant. According to John, this was "a relief," and it's a habit they still have today. He says, “I like to be able to not even have that be a question in her or anyone else’s mind. Something about peeing in that cup is like, I’m walking this walk. It gives me confidence.”

Usher may have been on to something with his single "Love in This Club" because that's exactly what happened for Matthew McConaughey. Well, he and Camila Alves didn't make love in the West Hollywood club they were at. Instead, they met and it was love at first sight for McConaughey.

He told People he remembers the exact moment he saw his future wife. "She showed up, and she moved right to left in front of my eyes across that club," he said. "It was as if she was floating. And I did not say, 'Who is that?' I said, 'What is that?' And then introduced myself."

That introduction sealed the deal for both of them as they begin going on dates shortly after that. I love that it didn't take them long to decide, "Okay, we're doing this" because I still believe in love at first sight. I mean, who hasn't dreamed about the moment they're at a party and lock eyes with the person they're meant to be with?

January 2008: Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves make their relationship red carpet official

Two years after their fateful meeting, Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves made their red carpet debut for the premiere of Fool's Gold. It was clear their relationship was going well because Alves was sporting a cute little baby bump. She actually opened up about the moment they decided to let the world know they were together in a reflective Instagram post.

"I was so nervous, we had already been dating for a while and I had been to movie premiers with him but always sneaking in thru the back to keep our privacy... this was the first time going 'here we go.'" She wrote in the caption.

July 2008: Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves have their first baby

The couple welcomed their first son, Levi Alves McConaughey, during the summer of 2008 and were beyond grateful for his arrival.

Camila later shared how tough his birth was when she appeared on Sarah Hyland's Lady Parts in 2021. "We tried to go as natural as we could in a hospital setting," she said. "We really wanted to go through without taking [medication]. We wanted to have that experience, and that was what we planned on."

However, Camila had to have an emergency C-section which happens if the medical staff determines there's grounds for an intervention. In baby Levi's case, the umbilical cord was wrapped in such a way that wouldn't have ended in good results had Camila tried to deliver vaginally.

I'm just grateful that things ended up going well even if Camila experienced a change in her birth plan.

June 2009: Matthew McConaughey announces baby no. 2 is on the way

Almost a year after Levi's birth, Matthew McConaughey announced that he and Camila Alves were expecting their second baby via his website. Though the post is no longer available, People grabbed a portion of the announcement.
"Happy Father's Day. It's my first, and the last 11 months with Levi and Camila have been the most rewarding adventure...We have more blessed news to celebrate this Father's Day that makes this time next year double the fun. Levi is going to be a big brother … Yeah, we pulled off the greatest miracle in the world one more time," Matthew wrote.
Maybe I'm delusional, but I swear I can picture his signature grin as he sat down to type this announcement. For all I know, he may have even said, "Alright, alright, alright' when he published it.

Not prone to rushing things, Matthew McConaughey decided to propose to Camila on Christmas in 2011. He shared more about the proposal in an interview with Esquire. "I remember her face. When their youngest son, Livingston Alves McConaughey was born, he arrived one year and three days after Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves got engaged. According to CBS News, Matthew shared this on X: "Camila gave birth to our third child yesterday morning. Our son, Livingston Alves McConaughey was born at 7:43 a.m. on 12.28.12. He greeted the world at 9lbs. and 21 inches."

It's unbelievable to think Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves have been married 12 years, but time flies when you're enjoying moments with the love of your life.

Matthew took to Instagram to share a heartfelt photo and message to celebrate their marriage, and I'm pretty sure someone is cutting onions because my eyes keep watering. He simply wrote, "thank you #happyanniversary" as his caption, but those two words feel like they hold a ton of weight.

From their philanthropic efforts to founding their own Tequila brand, Pantalones, Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves have found ways to support in each other in love, life, and business. Frankly, I love to see all of it.

Much like it's shocking to realize this couple's been together for over a decade, it's also shocking that Matthew McConaughey could possibly be 55 years old. And yet, he is — and Camila Alves is ready to celebrate it!

Alves shared a post on Instagram to honor her hubby's birthday. The caption reads, "Today we celebrate you! …. Well technically we celebrated you all weekend!" wrote Camila, 41. Alongside her thoughtful musings, Alves shared a video of the two of them on a sweet nighttime — and bike-drawn — sleigh ride. In July 2017, a source seemingly confirmed what many fans had been wondering for months: that Tom Holland and Zendaya had been dating. Considering the two other sets of Spider-Man leads (Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst and Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield) both dated, it felt like this was one relationship that was bound to happen.

"They started seeing each other while they were filming Spider-Man," the insider tells People. "They've been super careful to keep it private and out of the public eye but they've gone on vacations with each other and try and spend as much time as possible with one another."

In her Vogue cover story for May 2024, Zendaya talks a lot about how fame has affected both her life and Tom Holland's. “His [career] changed overnight. One day you’re a kid and you’re at the pub with your friends, and then the next day you’re Spider-Man,” she says. “I definitely watched his life kind of change in front of him. After going sober in 2022, Tom Holland announced on October 15 he was launching a non-alcoholic drink company called Bero. “When I got sober, I started exploring the world of non-alcoholic beers and realized there was space for me to fit in,” Tom says in an interview with Forbes. “My first year sober was really difficult, and had I had Bero, I think it would have been easier.”

The First 'Outer Banks' Cast Member Has Unfollowed Rudy Pankow (& It's Not Who You Think)

Outer Banks fans cried saying goodbye to JJ when part 2 dropped on November 7, but I wasn't expecting the Outer Banks cast's goodbye to Rudy Pankow to make me equally emotional. The TV show is a standout because of how electric the cast's chemistry is onscreen — and how close they are offscreen.

But according to some sources, a rift reportedly formed between Rudy Pankow (JJ) and Madison Bailey (Kiara) after fans picked up on their chemistry and started shipping them IRL...like, really intensely. Despite the fact the creators promise this was the plan since season 1, OBX fans are convinced their rumored fallout is the reason Rudy left the show.

After fans have been VERY loud about the supposed cast drama, Carlacia Grant (Cleo) made me laugh out loud when she posted her OBX 4 Instagram post — and seemingly called fans out in the comments. The roundup includes cast group pictures, a snap of Drew Starkey, and Morocco, and she captioned the post, "If I drop these are y’all gonna act right?"

Before long, the Instagram drama continued to unfold, and one cast member was the first to unfollow Rudy: Madelyn Cline. Needless to say, I'm shocked.

Why aren't Rudy and Madison friends anymore?

Rudy Pankow and Madison Bailey were best friends during season 1 (Madison called Rudy her "bestie," and said that in any situation, "he's the first person I'm going to call"). But rumors of a fallout came after the show went viral in 2020. Fans picked up on their onscreen chemistry and started shipping the actors in addition to shipping their characters JJ and Kiara (the internet shipped the fictional couple so hard, in fact, that the relationship was written into the show despite it not being the team's original plan).

"Madison and Kiara, and Rudy and JJ, are two different people," Madison said in a 2020 Entertainment Tonight interview after the relationship started picking up steam. "Let's keep the ships on the show. But as far as the show, I'm all for it."

After publicity for Outer Banks season 2 began, fans noticed Rudy and Madison didn't seem to have the same connection in public, and even appeared to avoid each other on set — a far cry from their adorable interactions during press for season 1.

Fans started outright blaming Rudy's girlfriend Elaine Seimek, who was originally a PA on the show, for causing a rift between the two actors. Madison herself shut down the rumors with a TikTok promising they all had no problems, while Rudy Pankow took to Instagram to defend his girlfriend.

"To those who are creating such displeasure and opinions about the one I love and my relationship, it’s time to stop," Rudy Pankow said in an August 6, 2021 post. "I want to express the importance to spread positivity and needing to know when it is unfair to express your own distaste for something or someone, especially when you can do it behind an anonymous identity. I was always told the best version of yourself is your most humbled self…I make this statement as my most humbled self and would be so grateful if we all would move forward in positivity and respect."

Is there drama between the Outer Banks cast?

The Outer Banks cast drama rumors only intensified after a June 2023 dinner, when Madison Bailey and her partner Mariah Linney reportedly unfollowed Elaine on Instagram. Not to mention the fact Rudy Pankow isn't in any of the Outer Banks season 4 cast videos.

After JJ's death rocked the internet, creators Josh and Jonas Pate and Shannon Burke said that it was always the plan to kill JJ. "For a long time we had known that someone was going to die," showrunner Shannon Burke told Teen Vogue. "We thought it was going to be JJ all along."

However, the fact that JJ and Kiara have been dating for almost 2 years at this point, yet barely react to the other heading into danger has fans thinking Rudy asked to leave the show. And rumors that they filmed multiple endings to give Rudy the option to stay only adds fuel to the fire.

When new episodes of the show dropped in November of 2024, fans almost immediately clocked that Rudy and Madison appear to have used body doubles for a cuddling scene — while Madelyn Cline and Chase Stokes (who dated from June 2020 to November 2021) were cozied up across the campfire.

Even though an anonymous source suggested Rudy and Madison aren't friends anymore, and that their chemistry onscreen in season 1 was because they'd fallen for each other IRL, a source told People the actors are not feuding.

But one DeuxMoi source just spilled some serious tea, telling the site that, "Rudy asked them to write him off because of the drama! Production got mad and they had to refilm episodes," they said. "They filmed episode 10 before the last episodes of the first half & Rudy didn't tell the cast so it threw them off. In the last episode you can see how mad everyone was at Rudy. It's a mess and it pissed off production but they are going to brush it off like it's ‘always been the plan.’”

They also revealed that apparently, the plan was to kill JJ off in the series finale, which honestly kind of makes sense.

When did Madison Bailey and Rudy Pankow meet?

Rudy and Madison first met after Rudy had booked the role of JJ and Madison was headed to a final audition. Despite the fact they had mutual friends, they didn't meet until they were on the same plane to Charleston. She told Harper's Bazaar in 2020 that she said hello when they crossed paths, then found a DM from him on social media. “He was like, ‘I knew you were Kiara the second I saw you,’" she said. "I was like, "Oh my God, did this guy three seats up really just DM me?’ He went and found our mutuals, found my page, and messaged me.”

Well, during press for Outer Banks season 4, when the cast was asked who would be most likely to fall in love with a stranger on a plane, Carlacia Grant (Cleo) answered with Madison, leading fans to believe she was confirming the romance rumors.

Rudy Pankow exited Outer Banks after season 4, and Madison Bailey finally spoke about what JJ means to her in the cast's official goodbye — and got emotional talking about how well Rudy brought the character to life.

"We all read the character on the page," she says. "And we know what you brought to it and you turned it out and really made something of it and paid respect to the depth of the character while bringing a lightheartedness that the show desperately needed."

And during a cast video hyping up JJ's (and Rudy's) best moments from the series, fans were beaming when Rudy and Madison dissected some of the best Jiara moments from season 3. "this video healed me❤️🩹 thank you netflix!" one TikTok user wrote in the comments of Madison talking about JJ and Kiara's first kiss. "I’m so happy [they're] friends bro like fr 🥺🥺," another user said.
