Your Guide to a Weekend in Philadelphia

You don’t have to be “in West Philadelphia, born and raised” to enjoy a visit to the City of Brotherly Love. After all, thanks to the city’s underdog Super Bowl victory this past year, the Eagles are now America’s team. There’s never been a more fitting time to visit this city in Pennsylvania, which is why Philly is our next carless weekend destination.

For New Yorkers, Philly is a surprisingly easy weekend trip with a much shorter travel time than our fair city to the north (looking at you, Boston). An Amtrak train from NYC will bring you to Philadelphia in under an hour and a half, while the Bolt Bus will drop you off a mere 30 minutes later.

Philly’s mastered the art of the strong first impression: 30th Street Station is absolutely stunning and boasts a beautiful bar and restaurant that puts Tracks, the underground bar near the LIRR at Penn Station, to shame. But there’s more to the city than its Instagram-worthy transit centers. Read on to find out why Philly is the best weekend getaway for cheesesteak-lovers, historians, and everyone in between.

Where to Stay

As for neighborhoods in Philadelphia, we recommend Rittenhouse Square (featured above) for the most aesthetically pleasing surroundings for your accommodations. Staying in The Rittenhouse Hotel is magical any time of year, but especially in the wintertime. Spring may have its blooms, but we prefer the holiday lights twinkling around the square in December. If you’re lucky enough to catch it blanketed with snow, make sure to snap plenty of photos.

If you’re staying in Rittenhouse Square in the summer, try to score a guest pass to the members-only pool at the Lombard Swim Club. Nicknamed the “Rittenhouse Swim Club” by the pool’s owners, this urban oasis is not just a place to take a dip but also to see and be seen in the city.

Luxury lovers don’t need to confine themselves to just one neighborhood. A new Four Seasons is opening soon in Center City, at the Comcast Center in mid-2019. Not only will the downtown hotel occupy the tallest tower in the city’s skyline, resting atop a 60-story architectural landmark, but it will feature restaurants helmed by Michelin-starred chefs and James Beard Award-winners, not to mention its very own infinity pool. (Take that, Lombard).

For the music (and cocktail) fans, the jazz-themed Cambria Hotel Philadelphia Downtown Center City has the only rooftop bar on Broad Street. Ideally located for weekend travelers, the Cambria is a quick Uber ride from 30th Street Station. The hotel’s design incorporates local artwork that reflects its vibrant cultural surroundings: The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts is right across the street along this stretch of Center City known as the “Avenue of the Arts.”

Other options include The Logan and Kimpton Hotel Monaco, and of course, there’s always Airbnb. Why waste an exorbitant amount of money on a hotel suite when you have places to go and people to see? Don’t let us hold you back, though. If you want to splurge, this is the place to do it.

What to Do

You can’t visit Philly without educating yourself on the history of our Founding Fathers. Old City is the birthplace of America’s independence, after all! Lace up your sneaks and go on a historic walking tour, where you can visit iconic landmarks such as the Liberty Bell (natch), Independence Hall (the birthplace of the Declaration of Independence as well as the Constitution ), and Old City Hall (home to the Supreme Court when Philadelphia was the nation’s capital).

If you’d rather explore on your own (and don’t want to commit an entire morning to a guided tour), the Historic Philadelphia Virtual Tour offers a choose-your-own-adventure audio accompaniment to your day. History buffs can go for The Independence Tour or The Franklin Tour, and there are other options that focus more on art and culture.

Or, you can always pay for the Constitutional Walking Tour, where you’ll definitely learn something new on your trip (and force yourself to not get distracted by the city’s myriad other sights, sounds, and activities). Speaking of alternate (but equally enlightening) activities, visit the old waterworks at the Philadelphia Museum of Art or the Impressionists at the Barnes Foundation (which houses the largest collection of Impressionist art in the country). The Rodin Museum is nearby if you want to have an entire afternoon à la française.

If you’re more about science than the arts, the Mütter Museum is the place for you. The Center City medical museum is located in the College of Physicians of Philadelphia, and we encourage you to go morbidly wild with the fascinating anatomical exhibits. Afterwards, stretch your *own* legs with a run on the Schuylkill River Trail, one of the most picturesque running paths in America (aside from those around the National Mall in DC — though it’s fitting the former capital would concede to the current one here too).

Old City isn’t only historic; it’s also great for shopping. On the first Friday of every month, Old City streets stage an epic exhibition of the neighborhood’s galleries, shops, and restaurants, and trust us, you won’t leave empty-handed. The shops at Center City, meanwhile, offer an array of fashionable boutiques, like Skirt, Intermix, Barneys, and Shop Sixty Five. Last, but certainly not least, Reading Terminal Market is one of the country’s largest and oldest public markets. Established in 1893, it’s filled with enough food booths, flower shops, fruit stands, and vintage books to satisfy every craving you could possibly have.

Speaking of cravings, we’re onto our favorite, albeit hotly contested, Philly pastime: Trolling the city for cheesesteaks and declaring allegiance to your favorite one. While the much-hyped rivalry is between Pat’s and Geno’s (neighboring rivals), locals are more likely to be spotted at Jim’s, Steve’s, Tony Luke’s, or Dalessandro’s. Whichever one you pick, our only recommendation is to go all in on the Cheez Whiz. In local parlance, you want it “wit wiz.” Cheese is always a good idea — even if it comes out of a can.

Where to Eat and Drink

Start your morning off right with an early trip to West Philadelphia, home of the University of Pennsylvania and pre-Bel Air Will Smith, to put your name on the list at Farmacy RX. The restaurant doesn’t take reservations, so be prepared to wait — but it’s worth it for the pastry basket alone. One of the most unique (and convenient) aspects of the Philadelphia restaurant scene is its pervasive BYOB culture. So just bring some Champagne and Farmacy RX will supply the orange juice for your mimosa enjoyment, which is not a terrible way to start your day.

If you’re visiting in the warmer months, reserve a table (and order the cheese plate) in the verdant outdoor space of Talula’s Garden. Of course, the restaurant features a beautiful interior as well, and the farm-to-table menu is above and beyond anything else you’ll find in the city.

When it comes to dining out, Stephen Starr has a lock on the Philly food scene, and his restaurants live up to the hype. Pretend you’re in a Parisian cafe at Parc, a French bistro on Rittenhouse Square (pictured above). If the weather is nice, they even offer sidewalk seating. It’s the closest you’ll feel to the Place des Vosges without buying a plane ticket to Charles de Gaulle. Otherwise, try El Vez: This top-notch Mexican restaurant boasts a circular bar with one of the largest tequila selections in the city — all the better for your margarita happy hour.

For post-dinner cocktails, venture back over to West Philly to check out Fiume. Located in the upstairs of an Ethiopian restaurant on 45th and Locust, this bar is the least pretentious (and coolest) speakeasy you’ve never heard of. The beer and cocktail list will make you wonder why you ever thought of going anywhere else.

Overall, Fishtown is the best neighborhood for nightlife, and Kung Fu Necktie is always a reliably good time. Unlike most Fishtown bars (which tend to be cramped), Kung Fu Necktie is spacious, with two floors, booth seating upstairs, and excellent live music. Otherwise, Barbary is a great spot for indulging in the $5 PBR-whiskey shot combo, letting loose, and dancing all night. Johnny Brenda’s also rocks a hip-hop dance vibe, though the institution’s defining characteristic is its late-night diner, perfect for when you’ve worked up a sweat and start craving carbs.

Closer to Center City, The Dolphin Tavern is another lively dive, with rainbow lighting and cheap drinks. Head there for one of their themed evenings (preferably Drake night) and prepare to dance the night away. Or, if you’re looking for a more collegiate vibe, swing by happy hour on Thursdays. The tavern is dynamic, just like the city itself.

There's no other place I'd rather vacation than Disney. I know, that might be a controversial statement, but I love visiting the Disney theme parks on my own, with family, friends, and basically anyone else who will join me. As an annual pass holder and self-proclaimed Disney adult, I seriously frequent Walt Disney World multiple times a week — and it's absolutely on my bucket list to visit all of the other parks around the world in my lifetime.

I've been to Disneyland and Disney's California Adventure — and I'll be able to check Disneyland Paris off my list soon — but until then, I've come up with a list of the parks I've already visited (and want to visit) in order of priority. Here are all Disney theme parks around the world you should visit, ranked.

TL;DR

  1. Magic Kingdom
  2. Epcot
  3. Hollywood Studios
  4. Animal Kingdom
  5. Disneyland
  6. Disney California Adventure Park
  7. Disneyland Paris
  8. Walt Disney Studios Park
  9. Tokyo Disneyland
  10. Tokyo DisneySea
  11. Shanghai Disneyland
  12. Hong Kong Disneyland

All The Disney Theme Parks, Ranked

Disney World

1. Magic Kingdom

Magic Kingdom is quintessential Disney for both the young and young-at-heart. Located in Central Florida, when you think of Disney, this is usually what comes to mind. It's most notable for the larger-than-life castle where Cinderella and her princess friends get together to meet guests everyday.

I especially love Magic Kingdom because it has a bit of everything for those classic fairytale lovers and thrill seekers. You'll find coasters such as Space Mountain and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, as well as more classic attractions like It's A Small World and Peter Pan's Flight that are suitable for the whole family. Plus, the entertainment is top notch with a daytime parade, evening fireworks, and a show on the castle stage.

(A word to the wise, though: there really isn't any alcohol in this park, so don't expect to have that Epcot-esque experience here)

Disney World

2. Epcot

Speaking of Epcot, it's genuinely unlike any other theme park in the world. The park somehow brings together futuristic concepts (Space 220 is out of this world) and cultural diversity (hello, World Showcase!) in such a unique way! Not only can you explore 11 different international pavilions, eating and drinking to your heart's content, but you can also enjoy incredible rides like Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind.

And while Epcot has rides and character meet and greets, this park really stands out for its festivals. Every few months, guests can experience different themed festivals filled with varying entertainment, food, and beverage offerings. Epcot's International Food and Wine Festival is arguably the most popular — I mean who doesn't love to celebrate that?! Other incredible celebrations include the International Flower & Garden Festival, International Festival of the Arts, and Festival of the Holidays. I highly recommend scheduling your trip to Epcot during one of these festivals periods because it truly shows the park at its best capacity.

(And if you're feeling a silly, you can "Drink Around The World" in Epcot's World Showcase any time of year 😉)

Disney World

3. Hollywood Studios

Hollywood Studios is flashy and fun, featuring larger than life productions to high-tech attractions and rides. You'll find a bit of everything at Hollywood Studios, but Galaxy's Edge and Toy Story Land are the park's newest developments with attractions including Rise of the Resistance, Millennium Falcon, and Slinky Dog Dash. Oh, and I can't forget about Tower of Terror — the icon of the park that can be seen from multiple points across the Disney property.

Lastly, you won't want to miss Fantasmic, the parks nighttime spectacular that combines water, characters, fireworks, and more into a breathtaking show for guests each night. Content Editor Haley Sprankle constantly has the theme song stuck in her head — it really is THAT good.

Disney World

4. Animal Kingdom

No trip to Disney World is complete without a visit to Disney's Animal Kingdom. Whether you're looking to be in tune with nature or see wildlife in action, you can experience it all at DAK.

For starters, you can go on the Kilimanjaro Safaris where you'll be guided around an African savannah right in the heart of Florida to see animals like giraffes and hippos in their natural habitats while learning facts about the park and their conservation efforts. Outside of the rides, you can't miss the Festival of the Lion King which is a 30-minute Broadway-style show that features acrobats, live music, puppetry, and fire throwing — all in celebration of the beloved film!

The only downside to DAK is that it can get extremely hot, and there aren't a lot of places to find relief from the brutal Florida sun. I'd definitely be sure to wear protective hats and hydrate, whenever possible!

Disneyland

5. Disneyland

A visit to the original Disney park is a must-do at some point in your lifetime. Disneyland is home to Sleeping Beauty's castle and has a quaint, old-school feel that instantly transports you back in time. Unlike Disney World, characters at Disneyland roam and meet guests as they interact with their environment — almost as if they just hopped off a page from a storybook.

In terms of rides, there's no shortage of them at Disneyland, from Indiana Jones Adventure to Pinocchio's Journey. Lastly, no trip to Disneyland is complete without paying homage to Walt outside of his apartment on the top of Main Street U.S.A. Don't forget to grab a churro too — they're delicious!

Disney California Adventure Park

6. Disney California Adventure Park

Directly across from Disneyland is Disney California Adventure — here you'll find a mix of Disney, Pixar and Marvel characters and rides for the whole family. DCA is home to the beloved Cars Land, AKA where you can visit Radiator Springs Racers and Flo's V8 Cafe. Other highlights of the park include Pixar Pier, San Fransokyo Square (inspired by Big Hero 6), and Avenger's Campus. If you get hungry at DCA, there are plenty of dining options, from Carthay Circle to Lamplight Lounge. Plus, who doesn't love that iconic Mickey Mouse ferris wheel?!

Joan Costa

7. Disneyland Paris

Making your way to Europe? Be sure to make a stop at Disneyland Paris — located only 40 minutes away from the downtown area — to get your fix of Disney magic. Disneyland Paris is centered around Sleeping Beauty's Castle and is home to four lands — Fantasyland, Frontierland, Adventureland, and Discoveryland.

Like any Disney theme park there are so many rides, characters, and fun to get into. Step foot into Phantom Manor or Star Wars: Hyperspace Mountain to immerse yourself in Disney's iconic storytelling whether by yourself or with family members.

Walt Disney Studios Park

8. Walt Disney Studios Park

Next to Disneyland Paris, you'll want to head over to Walt Disney Studios Park to find attractions and characters inspired by Disney, Pixar and Marvel. Some of the most exciting elements? Crush's Coaster, Cars Road Trip, and Ratatouille — because of course we couldn't exclude Paris's favorite rat. It's definitely a slower paced park with less offerings, however, you'll still feel the magic as soon as you step foot onto the property.

Tokyo Disneyland

9. Tokyo Disneyland

If you find yourself in Tokyo, then you'll absolutely wanna do yourself a favor and head over to Tokyo Disneyland. While it's completely it's own park, Tokyo Disneyland seems most similar to Magic Kingdom with its seven different "lands" throughout. You'll find the World Bazaar, Adventureland, Westernland, Critter Country, Fantasyland, Toontown, and Tomorrowland.

You'll find some classic Disney attractions, like the Enchanted Tale of Beauty and The Beast alongside other family-friendly options like Pooh’s Hunny Hunt and Monsters Inc Ride and Go Seek. Plus, you'll be able to see lots of characters throughout — not to mention the exciting entertainment offerings from Jamboree Mickey to Harmony in Color!

Lastly, this park has SO much great merchandise options, so you can bring home something unique with you to remember your trip!

Tokyo DisneySea

10. Tokyo DisneySea

Head on over to Tokyo DisneySea where you'll find a plethora of rides and characters from beloved Disney movies. Aside from Mickey and Minnie, you can meet lots of princesses alongside Duffy and friends (the cutest little animal characters!) to fill up your autograph book and camera roll to the max.

This park is self-described as the "only Disney park themed to the myths and legends of the sea," adding extra intrigue to the experience. You'll find the Mediterranean Harbor, American Waterfront, Port Discovery, Fantasy Springs, Lost River Delta, Arabian Coast, Mermaid Lagoon, and Mysterious Island.

Tokyo DisneySea's latest expansion is Fantasy Springs where you'll be immersed into the worlds of Peter Pan, Tangled, and Frozen. Plus, you can get on Journey to the Center of the Earth and 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea — which you also won't find at any other Disney park!

Disney

11. Shanghai Disneyland

Shanghai Disneyland features the Enchanted Storybook Castle right in the center of the park, where guests can take pictures and get immersed in the magic. The park has eight different themed areas — Mickey Avenue, Gardens of Imagination, Fantasyland, Treasure Cove, Adventure Isle, Tomorrowland, Toy Story Land, and Zootopia — with each offering it's own unique vibe. Some popular attractions include Pirates of the Caribbean: Battle for the Sunken Treasure, Tron Lightcycle Power Run, and Peter Pan’s Flight.

According to their website, this park is also the most "technologically innovative" Disney theme park, so I'm sure you'll be in for some really exciting features! Plus, the Enchanted Storybook Castle is "the tallest, biggest and most interactive of all Disney castles the world over." Okay, sign me up!

Hong Kong Disneyland

12. Hong Kong Disneyland

Hong Kong Disneyland may be last on this list, but the park definitely has some incredible standout options for guests! (Plus, you know I'm never mad to be at any Disney theme park ever!)

For starters, no other Disney park has a Mystic Manor, an alternative take on the Haunted Mansion where guests are ushered inside as Henry Mystic shows visitors inside his home that's filled with antiques. Other highlights include the Iron Man Experience, Slinky Dog Spin, and Big Grizzly Mountain Runaway Mine Cars.

Plus, this park has stunning views throughout. The main castle is surrounded by lush, green mountains that are totally breathtaking — and totally different than anything you'd see in Orlando!

No matter what kind of day you're having, Marissa Cooper's having a worse one. Mischa Barton's The O.C. character went through the ringer during the first three seasons of the teen drama (remember how she overdosed in Tijuana...and also saw her parents post-hookup after their divorce?).

And during her time on The O.C., Mischa Barton struggled with drug and alcohol abuse. She was arrested for a DUI in 2007 and eventually received involuntary psychiatric hospitalization in 2009 after allegedly threatening to end her own life. And in a new interview, Peter Gallagher (who played Sandy Cohen on the show) says he's "just so grateful" for "the fact that she’s still alive."

  • Mischa Barton starred alongside Peter Gallagher in The O.C. from 2003-2006.
  • The actress has revealed the "trauma" of being a star at that point in her life.
  • Peter recently opened up about how he's thankful "she’s still alive."

The O.C. follows Ryan Atwood, who moves in with the Cohens after getting kicked out of his mom's house, and starts a relationship with Marissa shortly after. While Peter Gallagher played Adam Brody's TV dad instead of Mischa's, Sandy was a definitely father figure for Marissa, and it seems like Peter felt that same responsibility off camera.

"I’ve always felt very protective of her," Peter told The Independent. "First fame is toxic. First fame can kill you. She was 16 years old when she started working with us, so just the fact that she’s still alive, I’m just so grateful."

“You can go to therapy every day for the rest of your life,” Mischa said in a 2023 interview with The Sunday Times. “There’s just a certain amount of trauma [from] all that I went through, particularly in my early twenties, that just doesn’t go away overnight.”

Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage revealed that season 1 overdose not only served as a cliffhanger, but gave “network executives an escape hatch on a performer they had been wary about” (via People). But Mischa Barton got her big break, becoming "how people knew the show," and (thankfully) Marissa recovered — only to die after a car crash in season 3.

As hard as that season 3 ending is to watch, Mischa did have the opportunity to watch it with Rachel Bilson and Melinda Clarke for the first time on their rewatch podcast. "It needed to be a thing, after everything she's been through, but if it's here I'll watch it with you," Mischa says.

"I couldn't do it, Mischa, I couldn't do it," Rachel adds. "But I'm going to do it if you're going to do it."

Mischa says even though being written off the show "was a little bit of a bummer," it wasn't necessarily a surprise. "The character was just doing too much," she told Vanity Fairin 2023. "And I think they ran out of places for her to go. It was not the best thing in the world, [but] there wasn’t much you could do at that point. It was whether she could sail off into the sunset, or die. At that point, I guess it’s better to have the more dramatic ending.”

With fall in full swing, it's safe to say you may have already taken trips to a local pumpkin patch or made your way to a haunted house (or two) for Halloween. Former Disney Channel star Dylan Sprouse and model Barbara Palvin are certainly living the sweet life after tying the knot in Palvin's native Hungary. The couple, who have been together for nearly five years, have always been pretty low-key — except for the occasional and undeniably adorable Instagram post (and a stunning wedding!). We are simply ~obsessed~ with this celebrity couple, especially after they pulled out all the stops for their couple's Halloween costume. Keep scrolling to see some of their best moments :').

See Dylan Sprouse & Barbara Palvin's Halloween Couple's Costume!

For Halloween Dylan Sprouse and Barbara Palvin stunned as the Phantom and Christine from Phantom of the Opera. Dylan wore a mask and a black cape, while Barbara wore a beautiful white dress. While the costume is obviously a nod to the musical, it also totally reminds us of their day as bride and groom.

"In Sleep He Sang to Me," Barbara said in a post, quoting the musical's titular number. "@dylansprouse my forever Phantom."

Who did Dylan Sprouse marry?

www.instagram.com

On the couple's wedding day (July 15, 2023), Barbara wore a Vivienne Westwood wedding gown to celebrate her Hungarian nuptials, bringing together their nearest and dearest for an intimate(-ish) celebration. Barbara and Dylan tied the knot on her parent's property, which conveniently doubles as an event venue, with plans to host an larger wedding in California in the fall.

"This past weekend was supposed to be an intimate event, but we ended up having 115 guests in the end because there are a lot of people we care about, and we wanted them all to be there," Barbara told Vogue.

When did Dylan Sprouse and Barbara Palvin get engaged?

Barbara Palvin on Instagram: "♥️"

After months of speculation surrounding the couple's engagement, Dylan and Barbara confirmed their engagement in conversation with Sprouse's twin brother, actor Cole Sprouse, for V Magazine in June, sharing that they got engaged last September.

"We didn't necessarily feel the need to be fully transparent with the public about that aspect of our engagement," Dylan said. "What we wanted to do with Stephen [Gan, V editor-in-chief] and the V team is make something that was kind of tongue-in-cheek about the nature of private versus public. We're playing with the idea of perception."

Barbara noted that the lovebirds wanted to announce the news "on our time," adding, "When some people leaked the information that we got engaged, our PR team was like, 'Hey, so you guys should do maybe a post about it or talk to this magazine or talk to that magazine…' That really annoyed me because I knew we were building this story up. So, I'm very happy that we ended up doing it our way."

When did Barbara Palvin and Dylan Sprouse start dating?

According to People, the couple met back in 2017 after a party when the Suite Life On Deck star slid into the model’s DMs (and as they say, the rest is history). The duo made their relationship Instagram official back in 2018 with Barbara’s sweet birthday tribute for Dylan’s 26th birthday.

Let’s be real here for a second though, we all knew they were endgame the minute Dylan went above and beyond to support Barbara at the Victoria Secret Fashion Show that same year (remember this viral video?). 2017's The Beguiled gave us one of the best groups of people of all time: Elle Fanning, Nicole Kidman, Sofia Coppola, and Kirsten Dunst just to name a few. And we're finally getting an Elle and Nicole reunion thanks to Apple TV+! "THRILLED to bring @rufithorpe genius hysterical heart-wrenching heartwarming book to your TV screens alongside a dream group of people!" Elle says on Instagram. Rather than having to test the success of its pilot, the series has already been ordered — even though the book it's based on isn't even out yet! Here's everything you need to know about the series.

  • Dakota and Elle Fanning will produce the upcoming Apple TV+ show Margo's Got Money Troubles.
  • The series follows Margo, who signs up for OnlyFans after learning she's pregnant.
  • The cast includes Elle Fanning, Nicole Kidman, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Nick Offerman.
