8 Creative Pop Culture-Inspired 30th Birthday Ideas

I have to make a confession: I’m a total pop culture fiend and always have been. I know way too much about the best friendship of Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Schumer, shared all those Drake memes before any of my friends and, if I don’t catch up on my “stories,” aka Ryan Murphy and Shondaland shows of all varieties, my week doesn’t feel complete. Don’t get me wrong — I fully embrace my silly fixation. But I’m also 29 and will be turning 30 sooner than I would like to admit. Is it time to give up on my pop culture cravings when I hit the big 3-0?

I know that going from a 20-something to 30-something makes you sound like such an adult, but honestly, sometimes I still feel like a total kid! There is definitely still some Britney on my playlist, and Molly Ringwald is the only lady (besides my mom or sister) who can really comfort me on a sick day. Why not make turning 30 all about embracing the stuff you love instead of trying to reinvent yourself? Throwing a pop culture-themed party not only celebrates your past and present faves, but it’s also a fun way to not take crossing that threshold too seriously. Here are some ideas for pop-culture lovers to start off their new decade with a bang.

1. Party Like It’s 1985/‘86: Why not use the year you were born as the theme? For almost-30-year olds, it’s a great excuse to make your party a rockin’ ‘80s riot. Ask guests to dress up as their fave icon of the era (so many Madonna options) and set up a photo booth with plenty of tacky style props — the more neon, the better. Polaroids from the night as party favors, anyone? It’ll be totally rad!

2. 13 Going on 30 Party: No, we’re not talking the Jennifer Garner movie (although we could totally go for some Razzles right now). Think back to when you were actually 13 years old — the late ‘90s/ early 2000s — and have a celebration that’s non-stop teeny bop. Make the dress code 8th grade dance-chic (think: butterfly hair clips, flared jeans and Steve Madden-style platforms) or give the bash a TRL theme and dress up as your favorite pop tart (Britney a la “…Baby One More Time” always slays). Dig up some old-school BOP magazines for an epic game of MASH — a seventh-grade lunchtime fave — or have a WB-themed trivia game and test each other’s Buffy and Dawson’s Creek knowledge.

3. Party Like Your Fave #Girlboss: So many of our fave pop culture heroes also happen to be rad chicks in their 30s, like Amy, Mindy, Reese and Lupita. This is a party that should be all about celebrating being a kickass lady (and dressing[ish] the part, like with this amazing Lena Dunham tee by now-defunct brand Clashist). Play a name-that-quote game with soundbites from your favorite gals or, since being a girlboss ain’t easy, make it a time that you and your ladies get real about your #lifegoals and show support for each other, because if we’ve learned anything from Taylor Swift, it’s that badass friendships are just as important as mega success.

4. Breakfast Club Birthday Brunch: Make it a daytime celebration in honor of an ‘80s teen flick fave. Hang a modernized version of the movie poster ($16) above a fruit sushi bar, mix up pitchers of mimosas and bellinis all the bad kids will love and get down with a midday ’80s dance off during a matinee screening.

5. Golden Girls Party: No other pop culture icons brush off getting older like Dorothy, Rose, Blanche and Sophia, who should natch be front and center on your party invites ($20 for 8). Set up a DIY brooch table with plenty of pearls and faux flowers for guests to add to their cardigans. Don’t forget dessert! Make mini key lime pies (very Miami) and cheesecake, because no Golden Girls party would be complete without cheesecake.

6. Troop Beverly Hills Party: Kim KW did it for her baby shower, why shouldn’t you have just as rad of a birthday celebration? Make it a cozy pajama party with DIY forts, a build-your-own s’mores bar and face masks, because we all deserve a little glamping treat on our big days. Don’t forget your sashes!

7. SNICK Party: Go totally ‘90s and ring in your 30s in the style of your favorite TV night as a kid. Set up a video confession area (very Clarissa Explains It All), have an Are You Afraid of the Dark? scary story time or play a game of All That-style charades. 8. Shondaland Party: Celebrate the big 3-0 in the style of our favorite TV lady boss. Have a wine tasting that Olivia Pope would be proud of, channel Meredith Grey by paying a game of Operation and make a Shondaland-themed trivia game with an Annalise Keating-style trophy for the winner. Sam Taylor-Johnson's nearing her golden years as she turned 58 this week! We're sure all birthdays are a big deal, but we especially appreciate the way Aaron Taylor-Johnson praised his wife on Instagram. His caption reads: "💕Happy Birthday gorgeous! ❤️ Love spending every moment with you 💚💛"

Instead of choosing his favorite picture of her, Aaron posted a lengthy carousel of his wife. Pictures include Sam doing an impressive split (we're jealous!), taking photos on a yacht, enjoying a steamy smooch with him, and being highlighted by the sun's golden rays. Aaron even made sure to throw in the classic "sunglasses on vacation" photo that's almost feels mandatory for couples to pose in.

It didn't take long to find Sam's response to Aaron's beautiful PDA post in his comments. "❤️❤️I love you ❤️❤️," is short, sweet, and to the point as she seems to know how cherished she is.

Aside from her husband's grand gesture, Sam has been reposting more "happy birthday" posts on Instagram stories so we think she's happily soaking up all the genuine love in her life. We can only hope our friends and families will commemorate our birthdays in a similar way this year!

Kate Middleton's "Remarkable" Birthday Tribute Celebrates Her "Strength" Following Cancer Battle

Kate Middleton has been top of mind for a lot of people over the last year after the princess announced in March 2024 she was battling cancer. "The last nine months have been incredibly tough for us as a family. Life as you know it can change in an instant and we have had to find a way to navigate the stormy waters and road unknown," she shared in a video update. "This time has above all reminded William and me to reflect and be grateful for the simple yet important things in life, which so many of us often take for granted. Of simply loving and being loved." And in honor of Kate's 43rd birthday, Prince William posted the sweetest tribute honoring her strength and perseverance.

Kate Middleton turned 43 on January 9, 2025. In honor of the big day, Prince William took to Instagram to celebrate, praising his "incredible" wife.

"To the most incredible wife and mother. The strength you’ve shown over the last year has been remarkable," he says in the post. "George, Charlotte, Louis and I are so proud of you. Happy Birthday, Catherine. We love you. W."

And well wishers flooded the comments. "Happy Birthday Catherine, wishing you a wonderful year ahead surrounded by family and loved ones," one user says, while another adds, "Happy Birthday Princess of Wales! What a gorgeous photo. Wishing you a wonderful year 😍 xx"

And the tribute comes after revealing Kate was doing "amazing" following her cancer battle.

The birthday celebration comes after the prince shared an update on Kate in early November that had us all breathing a sigh of relief. “She's doing really well thanks. And hopefully, she is watching tonight. So cheering me on," he said before the Earthshot Prize awards (via People). “She's been amazing this whole this whole year. I know she will be really keen to see tonight be a success."

"From what I understand, Catherine is doing very well," royal author Robert Jobson added in an interview withHello!that same week. "She is back training at the gym and doing all the things she wanted to do."

Kylie and Jason welcomed their fourth daughter March 30, according to PEOPLE, but an official announcement was shared via the couple's joint Instagram post on April 1. "Whoop, there she is! Finnley “Finn” Anne Kelce 3/30/25," reads Kylie's caption and we think it's the cheekiest way to describe her arrival.

The subsequent photos of Finnley are just as cute as she's seen wearing the cutest floral onesie and being held by her parents. Call us biased, but she has the most precious face we've ever seen. Even her uncle Travis thinks so!

PEOPLEalso reports the NFL player incredulously told his brother how much he wanted to see Finnley after the latter asked how he felt. "Yes, I want to see my new niece, Jason! You only sent one picture. You didn’t even tell me what name you picked yet."

But his complaints stopped the minute Jason showed him Finnley during their latest New Heights podcast episode. Travis immediately melted and said, "Hey, little muffin! Look at you. You hanging out with Mom? Tell Ky I said hello. I’m glad everything’s going great." He even thinks her name is "adorable."

Jason Kelce took the news of being an official girl dad like a champ. He told E! Newshe's "got it pretty easy" because "the clothes are all going to be hand-me-downs or already bought." Not only that, but they'd already secured a baby crib prior to their newborn's birth.

“I love my kids so much, and especially my daughters,” he added. "I was telling somebody out there because they're expecting their first — and they look at you. They smile at you. There's just a way that kids have to warm your soul in a way that nothing else can.”

He also shared his excitement about watching his daughters grow up with a new sibling. "And hopefully we'll welcome a fourth into this world, and we'll be able to watch them fight and tear each other apart and all the good stuff."

He even appeared on The Rich Eisen Show where he joked, "I'm screwed [in] like in 10 years. The moment they’re all in middle school, I feel like it’s just gonna be chaos." He also hopes Wyatt "can start helping out a little bit more." But, he's still looking forward to it! "I obviously have not had a son, but there is something about a daughter in the way I think as a dad, you feel an extra amount probably of protection and love toward that child," he shared.

What did Kylie say about her fourth pregnancy?

Kylie previously opened up on her new podcast, Not Gonna Lie, about her feelings on her fourth pregnancy. At the time, she said she was "so incredibly grateful to be able to get pregnant, but it is a means to an end." She further said, "When I tell you that I cannot stand being pregnant, I mean it. I don't have a a fun time."

If that sounds a little uh...negative, it actually makes a lot more sense when she explained more! She elaborated, "I am nauseous for most of my pregnancy. It tapers off a little after the first trimester, but I continue to have nausea throughout my pregnancy." Woof, I know that's tough!

Kyle continued by explaining she hasn't even really had the fun, wacky cravings many pregnant people get — instead she had more "aversions" in each of her pregnancies. I'll take cravings over aversions any day!

The podcast host then joked, "When you're super pregnant and someone comes up to you and says, 'Isn't this just the most beautiful thing ever? 'I want to punch you in the face. I'm not going to, but I want to."

Did Natalia Grace's Parents Go To Jail? Here's What Really Happened To The Barnetts

Ever since Good American Family premiered on March 19, there has been renewed interest in the real-life adoption case of Natalia Grace.

The latest Hulu series stars Ellen Pompeo as Kristine Barnett, who adopted an orphan from Ukraine with her husband, Michael Barnett. However, after taking in Natalia, who had a rare form of dwarfism, Kristine began to suspect that she was an adult pretending to be a child.

New episodes of Good American Family are being released on Wednesdays, but as we wait to see what happens next in the TV dramatization, many fans are wondering whether Natalia's adoptive parents ever faced jail time. Here's everything we know.

Who is Natalia Grace Barnett?

For those unfamiliar with the infamous case, Natalia was born in Ukraine in 2003 and was first adopted by a different couple, Dyan and Gary Ciccone, back in 2008. She only lived with the Ciccone family for two years before they claimed her behavior was disruptive and relinquished their parental rights.

This led Natalia to be placed up for adoption again, and in 2010, the Barnett family welcomed her into their Indiana home. She was thought to be 6 or 7 years old at the time, but soon afterward, the Barnetts claimed Natalia had adult traits, such as adult teeth and body hair, and believed she wasn't actually a little girl.

Additionally, they alleged Natalia was a "sociopath" and had tried to harm them and their biological children, Jacob, Wesley, and Ethan.

What happened to Natalia Grace and the Barnetts?

The Barnetts ultimately petitioned an Indiana court in 2012 in order to change her birth year from 2003 to 1989. Legally, this made Natalia 22 years old, and she was placed in a Lafayette, Indiana, apartment by herself; meanwhile, the Barnetts relocated to Canada with their three sons, Jacob, Wesley, and Ethan.

Afterward, the Barnett family reportedly cut contact with Natalia, who moved in with another couple, Cynthia and Antwon Mans, about one month later. The Mans family petitioned to become her legal guardians in 2016, and by 2023, they were able to legally adopt Natalia.

Nonetheless, Natalia wound up leaving Cynthia and Antwon's home by the end of 2023 after alleging they were controlling. She currently lives in upstate New York with the DePaul family and appeared in the docuseries The Curious Case of Natalia Grace: Natalia Speaks. There, she called the Barnetts abusive and alleged Kristine had hit her with a belt and pepper-sprayed her.

What happened to Kristine and Michael Barnett?

Following their move to Canada, Michael and Kristine eventually got divorced but maintained that Natalia had exhibited violent behavior. Some allegations include that she'd appeared at the foot of their bed with a knife in her hand and attempted to poison Kristine's coffee.

Despite the fact that they filed the petition to change Natalia's age in 2012, Michael and Kristine weren't charged until 2019. They faced multiple counts of neglect, but Michael was found not guilty in 2022, and the charges against Kristine were subsequently dropped in 2023 after Michael testified in her pretrial.

Kristine Barnett reportedly wrote in a since-deleted Facebook post, "If there had been any abuse of Natalia or evidence of it, I would have been found guilty of it, and I would be in jail. I believe Natalia takes advantage of that sympathy to manipulate people."

Michael filed for divorce in 2014 and later appeared on The Curious Case of Natalia Grace: Natalia Speaks. As for Kristine, she has mostly flown under the public radar.

Still, following the finale of the docuseries, Kristine shared a long post on Facebook, responding to allegations against her.

"Natalia was a very much loved and cared for member of my family. She was not abused by anyone in my family. Let's get straight to these allegations. Nobody ever took a belt to Natalia, and the allegations that she was 'beaten' are just plain false. Any discipline of Natalia was very minimal and not out of the bounds of normal parenting," she wrote.

Natalia went on to call the docuseries "highly sensationalized," adding, "Michael Barnett and Natalia Barnett may have the same monster, but that monster is not me. That monster, whether it's mental illness, sociopathy, or whatever it actually is, may be different for each of them. But it's within their own psyche."
