How To Make The Most Popular Coffee Drinks In Every State

the most popular coffee drinks in america

If there's one thing that never wavers, it's our love for coffee. It's delicious, it provides an excuse to meet up with friends, and it gives us both a boost of energy in the morning and time to relax when sipping in the afternoon. But just like each state has their favorite Super Bowl dip recipe and skincare brand, we got a peek at coffee trends across the country thanks to Denby. Whether you're a die-hard iced coffee fan no matter the season or you prefer your coffee black, keep reading to see if your favorite drink makes the list.

The different kinds of coffee can feel overwhelming when you're not familiar with them, but they're easy to understand once you break them down. Here are the most popular coffee drinks across the country:

  • Black coffee: Black coffee is exactly what it sounds like! Pure coffee, no cream or milk added.
  • Cappuccino: A cappuccino is espresso with a smaller portion of milk and a bigger portion of milk foam
  • Cold brew: Cold brew is made by letting water and coffee grounds steep at room temperature before draining.
  • Decaf: Decaf is similar to regular black coffee, but the beans have been decaffeinated.
  • Iced coffee: All you need to do to make this drink is pour some regular brewed coffee over ice and you're good to go.
  • Latte: A latte is espresso with a bigger portion of milk and a smaller portion of milk foam.

Black Coffee — Five States

The most popular way to drink coffee in Arizona, Idaho, Montana, Utah, and Wyoming is to take it black. You can use black coffee for a variety of recipes, but the key to a good drink is making sure the brew itself is as delicious as possible. Try out different beans until you find a flavor that you love the best (we're big fans of Chamberlain Coffee and Driftaway Coffee).

How To Make the Perfect Cappuccino

Cappuccino — Five States and One District

The cappuccino reigns supreme in D.C., Florida, Kansas, Mississippi, New York, and Oklahoma. This drink is a delicious addition to any morning, and is usually served in a smaller mug than a latte. One key step that will make your cappuccino better is to fill your mug with hot water before you make your drink. That way you don't have a cold mug affecting the temperature of your coffee.

Cold Brew — Seven States

Cold brew is a delicious and flavorful addition to any morning, and perhaps the best part about making this drink is that you don't need any expensive equipment or expertise, just time and coffee beans. When making a batch of your own, the ratio is 1:4 with coffee and water respectively. We've found the magic number for brewing is 18 hours, but you can adjust depending on how strong you like this coffee drink. Check out some more tips and tricks here and enjoy a cold brew like the folks in Alaska, Colorado, Hawaii, Nevada, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington do.

Iced Coffee — 26 States

Iced coffee is one of the easier methods in this list, especially if you're working with a coffee pot since the machine does almost all the work for you. We love adding a splash of our favorite non-dairy milk and flavored syrup to upgrade the final result, or you can go all out with a recipe like this red velvet iced coffee. Iced coffee lovers reside in Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, West Virginia, and Wisconsin— making it one of the most popular coffee drinks around.

Decaf — Six States

Coffee with less caffeine is a great option for anyone, but one thing to keep an eye out for is the Swiss Water Decaffeination Process, which decaffeinates the coffee beans without the use of chemicals. With decaf, you can still make all your favorite coffee drinks, without any of the shaky or adrenaline-fueled side effects! Decaf rules the land as the most popular coffee drink in California, Maryland, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Mexico, and Virginia.

Latte — One State

This is usually our drink of choice — we find the ratio of milk to espresso is a delicious combo! Minnesota seems to agree as it was the only state that rated the latte number one. Add some of your favorite syrup to make it extra flavorful, or try making an adaptogen latte if you want to take part but aren't a fan of the taste of coffee beans.

How To Brew Your Coffee

There are different methods to make coffee at home, and which one you pick will depend on your lifestyle. You might prefer filter coffee over single-serve coffee pods if you always drink multiple cups, or you can buy a canister of instant coffee if you're always on the go.

Coffee pods can be used with Keurigs for a single cup at a time, but if you're worries about throwing away a bunch of pods, grab a reusable pod and fill it with your favorite bagged grounds. Cowboy coffee combines water and grounds in the same pot, and then you pour the coffee into a mug after all the grounds have settled. Dalgona, or whipped coffee (which was a viral TikTok food trend during 2020), features a mix of instant coffee, sugar, and hot water that you froth together and serve over milk.

Espresso is a concentrated shot of coffee that's used in lattes, mochas, and cappuccinos. While finding a good espresso machine can be pricey, it won't take long before it pays for itself with how many trips to Starbucks you'll save. Filter coffee is the kind of drink you make with coffee pots and features ground coffee and water filtered apart from the grounds, while French press coffee drinks are smooth and strong. One drawback to this last method, however, is that you can only make two or three cups at a time depending on how big your French press is.

Instant coffee is exactly what it sounds like: it's powder that you can mix together with water for an instant cup o' joe. This method isn't as strong as the others, but it's good for anyone who's in a rush but still wants something to drink.

Moka is an Italian method of making coffee that is similar to espresso, but doesn't have quite the same taste or foamy crema on top. It's fascinating to make because the water and the grounds go in the bottom of the hourglass-shaped pot, and steam pushes the coffee upwards through a filter.

Make your own pour over coffee maker with some pipe for a cute and functional addition to your kitchen counter, or find a good glass pour over coffee maker with a permanent filter. This method is similar to filtered coffee, but you have more control over how the drink turns out since it's hand-poured instead of done with a machine.

Well, well, well – the rumors about the January 2025 Starbucks menu are true! Per Starbucks, they’ll be launching an all-new lineup on January 3, 2025. Their latest and greatest includes a never-before-seen espresso drink, a fresh approach to matcha, and the return of pistachio!

Though we’re quite sad to see Starbucks’ holiday menu staples go (bye, Peppermint Mocha), this collection of new bevs and snacks has our hearts racing.

See everything coming to the January 2025 Starbucks menu on January 3!

Drinks On The 2025 Starbucks Winter Menu

Starbucks

NEW! Cortado

Coming to Starbucks' current espresso lineup is the cortado, a "small but mighty" espresso-based drink that's served hot in an 8-ounce cup. It's made with 3 ristretto shots of Starbucks' Blonde espresso for a "smoother, sweeter, and richer" flavor profile. The boldness of the espresso is then deliciously toned down a bit with steamed whole milk.

“Espresso is the heart and soul of Starbucks,” says Ricky Gonzalez, a member of the Starbucks beverage product team. “Our goal was to create a new way for customers to experience espresso from us.”

Starbucks

NEW! Brown Sugar Oatmilk Cortado

Joining the winter menu alongside Starbucks' new traditional cortado is the Brown Sugar Oatmilk Cortado, which incorporates brown sugar syrup, cinnamon and steamed oat milk for a sweeter feel.

Starbucks

NEW! Customizable Matcha

That's right – Starbucks is upgrading their matcha powder! Instead of coming pre-sweetened, you can now customize the exact level of sweetness in your matcha drink. Starting January 3, Starbucks' matcha powder will come sweetened with classic syrup by default. Starbucks says the change is a response to a "popular customer request" for adjustable sweetness.

Starbucks

Pistachio Latte

Pistachio szn at Starbucks is honestly our favorite time of year – the nuttiness tastes too good with coffee! Returning to the winter menu on January 3 is the Pistachio Latte, which combines espresso and steamed (or cold) milk with pistachio syrup and a delish brown butter topping. You can also order pistachio in Frappuccino form!

Starbucks

Pistachio Cream Cold Brew

The Pistachio Cream Cold Brew is just as tasty as the regular latte – it features strong cold brew sweetened with vanilla syrup and is topped with pistachio cream cold foam and salted brown buttery sprinkles.

Food On The 2025 Starbucks Winter Menu

Starbucks

NEW! Spicy Falafel Pocket

This all-new, savory, 100% vegan snack includes an array of veggies like roasted red bell peppers and pickled onions alongside smashed falafel and creamy hummus for a very-Mediterranean feel. It's finished off with a spicy herb sauce and wrapped in a toasted lavash flatbread. Yum.

Starbucks

NEW! Valentine Cake Pop

V-Day is on the way! This limited-time cake pop celebrates the season of love with a tasty bite of vanilla cake mixed with buttercream, dipped in red chocolate icing, and decorated with a cutie little heart design.

Starbucks

Vanilla Bean Custard Danish

Returning to the menu this time around is the Vanilla Bean Custard Danish, which is made with sugared Danish dough, baked until golden, and filled with a "rich and velvety" vanilla bean custard.

New 2025 Starbucks Merch

Starbucks

Starbucks' drinkware and merch that coordinates with the new winter menu is filled with fun colors, from light pinks and cool blues to bright greens, all of which feel perfectly rejuvenating for the new year. These colorful pieces will only be available for limited time, while supplies last.

We’re constantly monitoring the aisles to discover all the new TJ’s sweet treats and savory snacks they launch – and these 7 new picks for January 2025 are not to be missed! All of these Trader Joe’s products will run you less than $5, which only makes sealing the deal on your grocery bill easier.

From delicious dips to a very enticing new frozen meal, these are the 7 best new Trader Joe’s finds you absolutely need to try in January 2025.

Trader Joe's

1. Teensy Candy Bars

These tiny little candy bar bites ($2.99) resemble Snickers in the best way possible: layers of nougat, caramel, and peanuts are enveloped in a delicious chocolate coating for maximum snackage. We're gonna have to resist eating the whole bag! TJ's even suggests using these bits as decoration for other desserts, like sprinkling some on a scoop of ice cream or baking them into some cookies.

Trader Joe's

2. Olive Tapenade Hummus

Trader Joe's array of dips is simply too good to resist, and this newcomer hummus ($3.49) is no exception! It's a tub of "smooth and nutty" hummus topped with a tapenade comprised of black olives, manzanilla olives, capers, and olive oil to give it a salty effect. It's gonna taste so great as a dip for crackers or as a spread on a Mediterranean pita wrap.

Trader Joe's

3. Organic Concord Grape Jelly

This squeezable grape jelly ($3.49) is nothing short of nostalgic. Trader Joe's says it's "super smooth, joyously juicy, and potently purple," which immediately has us sold on making PB&Js every day now.

Trader Joe's

4. Spicy Chicken Nuggets

Oh, yeah. Bring on the spice with these spicy nuggs ($3.99) that make the perfect easy meal no matter the time of day! Made from all-natural chicken breast and rib meat, breaded with wheat, rice and corn flours, then covered in hot sauce and lightly fried, TJ's has their texture down to a tee. You can easily cook 'em in the air fryer, oven, or microwave before chowing down!

Trader Joe's

5. Crispy Potato & Poblano Pepper Tacos

These halved and fried frozen tacos ($4.99) will totally crush your Taco Bell cravings, since they come together super quickly and contain flavors with mind-blowing authenticity! Each taco is filled with a blend of seasoned mashed potatoes and some "ever-so- slightly spicy" poblano peppers that'll work so well with any dipping sauce, from TJ's salsa to their creamy Jalapeño Sauce.

Trader Joe's

6. Strawberry Mini Hold The Cone!

Just in time for Valentine's Day, Trader Joe's is debuting a new flavor ($3.99) of their classic Hold The Cone! frozen dessert: strawberry! These tiny, chocolate-covered cones are lined with even more "rich" chocolate on the inside, then packed with strawberry ice cream, which TJ's says is crafted with plenty of strawberry purée.

Trader Joe's

7. Caesar Salad Dip

Trader Joe's shoppers have said this new Caesar Salad Dip ($3.69) makes a perfect girl dinner addition– which, if you get it, you get it! The tub starts with a "creamy" base that's then loaded up with Caesar-seasoned sour cream, mayo, anchovy paste, Parmesan, and finely shredded Romaine for the crunch. It's best enjoyed with crackers or veggie sticks to dip, but you could also smatter fried chicken or seared steak in it for some ahh-mazing flavor!

Dunkin’s winter menu for 2025 is lookin’ pretty sweet. Seriously – 3 out of 5 new drinks on the menu are inspired by cake. Since there’s little I love more than a good, decadent dessert (other than coffee, of course), I’m especially excited about this new lineup!

The Dunkin’ winter menu also has one sweet snack and an iced espresso drink that are both hauntingly similar to what Starbucks has to offer. Is the competition heating up, or is it just me?

The Dunkin’ winter menu dropped on December 31, just ahead of the new year. Dunkin's holiday menu dropped on November 1.

Let’s officially get into it. Here’s everything on the Dunkin’ menu this December to start 2025 off just right!

Brown Sugar Shakin' Espresso

Um, Starbucks dupe, anyone?! Dunkin's version of the famed Brown Sugar Shaken Espresso looks like it follows a very similar recipe to the Starbies way: espresso (shaken until frothy), brown sugar syrup, and oat milk. I can't wait to try this one and see how it measures up to my routine Starbucks order. It even got a co-sign from Sabrina Carpenter.

Dunkin'

Brown Sugar Oat Iced Matcha Latte

Dunkin' will offer two new in-app exclusive drinks this season, the first being the Brown Sugar Oat Iced Matcha Latte. It's like your average iced matcha latte, amped up with some brown sugar syrup and oat milk. Yum.

Speculation around the Dunkin' winter menu for 2025 also dropped some hints about the chain's Valentine's Day offerings.

According to the buzz, the Brownie Batter (pictured above) and Cupid's Choice donuts will return on January 29. What's even more exciting is that a new iteration of Dunkin's Munchkins will be available, too!

The new Valentine's Munchkins will reportedly be made from glazed chocolate donut holes coated in Valentine's-esque sprinkles. I'm craving them already!

Dua Lipa and Callum Turner spent New Years Eve together, and based on the giant ring Dua's wearing on THAT finger, it looks like they could be spending the rest of their lives together too! This celebrity couple were first spotted together in January 2024, and immediately became my favorite couple, like, ever. Engagement rumors were flying by the end of the year, and thanks to Dua Lipa's latest Instagram posts, the internet is more convinced than ever that these two will be headed down the aisle soon.

Here's everything we know about those Dua Lipa and Callum Turner engagement rumors.

Dua Lipa's been wearing a gorgeous ring on THAT finger since Christmas.

In a post celebrating the holidays, Dua Lipa posted a roundup of photos — led by a shot of her wearing a sherpa jacket and reindeer antlers. But as fun as her outfit is, the internet immediately focused on another detail: her new ring. It appears to be a diamond on a chunky gold band, and if you ask me, the ring's modern, glam look is the perfect vibe for the "Houdini" singer.

"THE RING," one user commented, while another user said, "ENGAGED VIBESSSSSSSSSS," under another end-of-year post.

And when Dua Lipa finally posted photos from her epic New Year's Eve celebration on January 3, a third user commented, "We all still waiting to see the 💍." TLDR; the singer's fans really want to know if she's engaged! But if there's one thing I know for sure, it's that this couple won't tell us unless they want to. And I'm here for it!

And Dua Lipa and Callum Turner are totally "mad about each other."

Dua Lipa and Callum Turner keep their relationship pretty private (aside from some very cute walks), but according to one Page Six source, they've been "mad about each other" from the start. And it's clear because these two can't keep their hands off each other!

"Dua and Callum are so in love and know this is forever," a source told The Sun in December 2024. “They are engaged and couldn’t be happier. Dua has had one of the best years of her career professionally and this is the cherry on the cake."

"Callum is such a solid support for Dua and they make a wonderful couple," the source continues. "Their family and friends are so happy. It’s been an amazing Christmas for them.”

Stay tuned for the latest news on Dua Lipa and Callum Turner's potential engagement, and read up on Tom Holland and Zendaya's engagement!
