13 Tips and Tricks for Your Pre-Holiday Detox

You’ve probably just reached homeostasis from all that Halloween candy, but the next few weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas are going to be the most trying. With all the prep work comes lots of stress, and you don’t want to risk coming away with frayed wires — or worse, with a case of the sniffles. We’re there to help with 13 hacks to boost your immune system and hit the reset button on your body so you’ll feel your absolute best, inside and out.

1. Switch Up Your Morning Brew: We know… to even suggest giving up caffeine during the holidays is cray cray. But hear us out. This six-ingredient elixir warms you from the inside out — ginger to promote digestion, liver-cleansing turmeric, anti-inflammatory cinnamon and a kick of cayenne come together to kickstart your body for a day of mindful eating and mental clarity. The fresh version is best, but you can also pick up a box of Yogi Tea DeTox ($5) to keep at your desk. (via Into the Gloss)

2. Instead of Jam, Spread Veggies on Your Toast: The Hemsley sisters are known for their “better for you versions of popular foods” on their blog, Hemsley + Hemsley, and they just released their first cookbook, The Art of Eating Well. So yeah, they know a thing or two about making healthy food that tastes delicious, too. More likely than not, avocado toast has been filling up your Insta feed during peak brunch hours, and Melissa and Jasmine have a veggie version of the green spread that combines broccoli, peas and mint. You get a healthy dose of fiber with the veg, garlic boosts your immune system and the fresh mint works wonders for your digestive system. (via T Magazine)

3. Combat Bloating With Dry Brushing: We brush our teeth twice (sometimes thrice) daily and give our mane 100 strokes before bed (a la Marcia Brady), but did you know that brushing your skin helps fight bloating? Dry brushing is a common naturopathic practice, massaging your lymph nodes to release excess water and toxins (your skin is the largest organ, after all) and improving digestion and kidney function. And with all the bubbly to be had, you need all of your systems to be in tiptop shape. Pick up a body brush ($4) with natural bristles and brush upward and toward your heart with light but firm strokes. After you’ve brushed from head to toe, sip on a mug of hot tea and lemon (or a cup of detox tea) to kickstart your digestive system. (via Brit + Co)

4. Take It to the Mat: The stress of the holiday bustle can get the best of us. Remember to take time for yourself, whether with meditation or yoga. This eight-pose sequence is designed to get your blood flowing and stimulate your circulatory, digestive and lymphatic systems to eliminate the toxins built up in your muscles. Deep breath in… and out. Ahhhhhhh. (via PopSugar)

5. Sip a Smoothie: The best way to squeeze in those recommended servings of fruits and veggies is with a fresh fruit smoothie. LC starts her day with this blend of beets, avocado, celery, strawberries and apple. The concoction of superfoods is one you’ll be happy to have for breakfast, too. (via Lauren Conrad)

6. Take a Charcoal Tablet: This is the weirdest way to detox out of the bunch, but did you know that activated charcoal is one of the oldest and most trusted remedies? It’s been used to soak up toxins because of its absorption properties. Some people take it after a heavy meal or to prevent a hangover, and some even brush their teeth with charcoal powder. If you’re not ready to bite the bullet just yet, try lathering up with activated charcoal soap ($18). (via Harper’s Bazaar)

7. Sip Your Way to Glowing Skin: Here’s another way to ingest charcoal. Juice Generation, an NYC-based pressed juice bar, just launched a line of charcoal-infused drinks and clay-infused shooters that detox from the inside out and result in flawless skin. What ever happened to just putting on a clay mask before bed? (via PopSugar)

8. Eat Clean for Clear Skin: If you thought you Instagrammed yourself to the limit on Halloween, just wait until Friendsgiving and Christmas. But filters can only do so much to amp up your mug for those shots. Take the time before and after Turkey Day to snack on almonds and sunflower seeds, which both contain skin boosting Vitamin E. Chia seeds are a great source of Omega-3 fatty acids, and you can stir them into muffins, smoothies and jam. (via Beauty High)

9. Spice It Up: In addition to adding flavor to your food, spices also work wonders in your bath water. That’s right, bring a classic spa treatment home with a mustard soak ($32), an ancient remedy for sore muscles, strained nerves and seasonal allergies and illnesses. A 30-minute soak is like pressing a reset button on your entire body. And who doesn’t want that? (via Beauty High)

10. Prep Meals for the Week Ahead: “A Sunday well-spent brings a week of content.” We’ve seen this proverb popping up on our feed for a while, and full disclosure, we’ve been guilty of spending a Sunday (or two) Netflix-bingeing. Instead of heading straight home after brunch, mosey on over to the farmers market and pick out some produce that catches your eye to throw into some recipes for the week. It’s all about preparing healthy ingredients for future meals. Make a pot of quinoa, roast a pan of veggies, de-stem your kale, whip up a batch of chia pudding for breakfast or blend up a mason jar of homemade dressing. A few hours of prep work will guarantee a week of clean eating. (via Into the Gloss)

11. Host an Anti-Holiday Detox Dinner: And with that prepped kale, you can easily throw together this One Pot Kale and Quinoa Pilaf. It’s part of a menu for a light, filling dinner that you can make for you and your SO or invite a few foodie friends over, too. (via Food52)

12. Have a Bowl of Cleansing, Comforting Soup:Cabbage is known for its superfood power of being antioxidant rich and promoting digestive health and mental clarity. Whip up a pot of this vegetarian broth-based soup to get your fill of fiber. It’s low in calories and salt, and the apple cider vinegar will balance your body’s pH level. (via Lauren Conrad)

13. Eat Colorful, Nutrient Rich Foods: You’ve heard this tip time and time again, but for reals, now’s the time to fill up your plate with the gorgeous fall produce that’s in season right now. Besides being beautiful in color, beets are packed with antioxidants, folate, fiber and potassium. As our favorite farmer, Dwight Schrute, would suggest, it’s best to eat them raw (juiced or sliced in salads) for maximum nutritional benefits. (via Women’s Health)

Emily in Paris season 4 was the buzziest season yet, and for good reason. Emily's in Rome, Camille was never pregnant, and Gabriel's hair went from très hot to tragique. In addition to the viral response to Gabriel's new hair, season 4 left me pretty sad because after four years of waiting for Emily and Gabriel to get together, they almost immediately break up — and actor Lucas Bravo is just as confused as we are.

Carole Bethuel/Netflix

“The ‘sexy chef’ was very much part of me in Season 1 and we grew apart season after season because of the choices he makes and because of the direction they make him take,” Lucas Bravo told IndieWire while promoting Mélanie Laurent’s Freedom. “As they made him kind of unaware of his surroundings, of the dynamic, always victimizing and always being completely lost in translation and oblivious to anything that is happening around him and being manipulated by everyone, it kind of became not fun for me to shoot or to see a character I love so much and brought me so much, being slowly turned into guacamole. I really grew apart from him.”

Honestly it makes me really sad that a character we all love so much is becoming unrecognizable. But at the same time, it makes me feel a little bit better, because we're not the only ones who feel like Gabriel has changed. And while Lucas has done what he can to bring those early-series aspects of Gabriel back, he says "there is only so much I can do in the limits of a script.”

Netflix

“I tried for seasons to bring nuances but we don’t have much liberty on set," he continues. “It makes me question if I want to be part of Season 5…because my contract ends at Season 4. I really want to see if Gabriel gets back to his fun, cheeky, playful, alive self. Because three seasons playing melancholic, sad, depressed, and lost is not fun anymore. It’s a comedy, everybody is having fun around me, everybody is jumping around, and I’m just slowly sinking into god knows what.”

Say what now?! If Lucas Bravo leaves Emily in Paris, I truly don't know what I'd do. Gabriel is my favorite character on the show! (Or at least, early Gabriel was.) Seeing him move from 30, flirty, and thriving to someone who's consistently in the middle of an existential crisis doesn't make sense within the world of the show. And even though Lucas thinks the show has a "lack of risk," he still loves everyone involved.

“I love the show. It started everything for me. I love the show and the people in it," he says. "With saying that, I feel like I am not being nice or grateful, but when you love something you want it to be…you want the best version of it. I’m not going to lie, I’ve been frustrated with the direction by character is taking. But we’ll see where it goes. The show is not over.”

Just like the show's iconic costumes are all about expression and fun, here's hoping Emily in Paris is able to bring some life back into our favorite chef. Because if not, it sounds like we could be nearing the end of the show's most popular would-they-won't-they relationship. Fix this Netflix, I beg you!

What do you think of Lucas Bravo's dilemma? Do you miss season 1 Gabriel? Let us know in the comments and check out the latest Emily in Paris season 5 news.

We love our holiday staples but sometimes we like to mix it up with someone new, whether it's a new appetizer to try (love this baked brie recipe), a new side dish, or even a new dessert or holiday cocktail. Conversations around the holiday table can't help but center on the food, and when you can drop a celeb name to the dish the conversation takes a juicy turn. This year, our holiday dinner goes to Hollywood for celebrity takes on holiday desserts, dishes and drinks. Make them now and well into winter. Who knows, they may become your family favorites too. Now scene!

Carly Pearce's Pumpkin Pie

The country music singer, based in Nashville, shared her mom's pumpkin pie recipe with us and we are all over it.

Dough:

  • 1 1/4 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1 stick of butter
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten

Filling:

  • 2 cups of unsweetened pure pumpkin puree
  • 1 cup evaporated milk
  • 3/4 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 3 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1 1/4 cups half-and-half
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/3 teaspoon of ground cloves (we like to add an extra pinch!)
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground nutmeg
Instructions:
  1. For the dough, mix together flour, sugar and salt evenly in a bowl
  2. Lightly beat in butter and egg
  3. Cover the dough in plastic and let chill in refrigerator for 2 hours
  4. Once chilled, sprinkle flour on a flat surface and roll out dough, then roll dough onto pie pan. Leave about half an inch extra around the edge and fold underneath the edge of the crust.
  5. Pinch edges of pie with your fingers, then freeze the shell for 30 minutes.
  6. Add parchment paper over the pie shell and fill with pie weights (this can be dried beans or even sugar)
  7. To prep the dough for the filling, bake on a baking sheet for 30 minutes on 375 degrees, or until pie shell is golden brown
  8. Take the crust out of the oven and remove the weights, then let the crust cool.
  9. Set oven temp to 350 degrees
  10. For the filling, mix the pumpkin puree, evaporated milk, half-and-half, light brown sugar and spices and eggs into a bowl. Whisk until smooth.
  11. Pour mix into pie crust, bake at 350 degrees for 50-60 minutes.
  12. Remove from oven, let pie cool for 30 minutes

Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie created reality TV gold when The Simple Life debuted in 2003. Their antics were outlandish, but we couldn't help repeating their iconic phrases like "That's hot" or "Sanasa" during random moments in our own lives.

It's no secret the two didn't really act that way, but their 'characters' left a huge mark on a generation of millennials. "I knew what I was doing but the whole world didn’t, so it was kind of frustrating to me to be perceived in that way because it’s not who I am at all," Paris told People.

Even though she may have felt judged, it seems that Paris Hilton realizes how many people actually loved The Simple Life because she and Nicole Richie are teaming up to film a reunion special that'll debut on Peacock as we speak! Here's everything we know so far!

When did speculations about 'The Simple Life' reboot begin?

NBCUniversal Media

Peacock first shared a video clip on Instagram that hinted something special involving Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie is coming in May. A nostalgic TV set with a black and white screen can be seen while our favorite duo's voices can be hearing saying, "Sanasa, Sanasa."

Peacock captioned the post, "New Era. Same Besties. Coming soon to Peacock," and fans could barely contain their excitement. Even celebs like Naomi Campbell and Katy Perry commented on these hot vibes.

Bravo

Then Paris Hilton took to her own Instagram to share more about what fans could expect. She said, "As some of you may know, we are doing a reunion special to celebrate 20 years of our show The Simple Life and it's been so much fun."

Actress Selma Blair shared how much she's looking forward to this by commenting that she's "living for this."

So are we!

What was 'The Simple Life' about?

The Simple Life/20th Century Fox

The Simple Life showed Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie as they basically traded their wealthy lifestyles for 'everyday' living. Cameras followed them from fast food jobs to dealing with getting out of sticky situations they'd supposedly never experienced. Needless to say, it was hilarious, iconic, and instant reality TV gold.

How long was 'The Simple Life' on air?

Peter Kramer/Getty Images

The Simple Life was on air from 2003 to 2007 with five successful seasons. It seemed like it wasn't going to be hit at first, but it defied expectations. By how much you ask?

According to reporting from The Cut, somewhere around 13 million viewers tuned in to watch Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie's oddball take on daily life. That's a pretty huge deal if you ask us!

When will 'Paris & Nicole: The Encore' debut?

Frederick M. Brown/Getty Images

Paris & Nicole: The Encore will premiere on Peacock December 12! The two were previously seen at a Sonic drive-thru yesterday so it can be assumed filming is underway (via People)!

Sporting partial Sonic uniforms, Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie added accent pieces that match their signature flairs. Paris wore a pair of reflective sunglasses, silver sequin heels, and added a pink flip phone to front of her blue apron. Nicole wore gold hoops and a pair of slingback pumps alongside her hotdog mascot costume. That's hot (dog).

How does Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie feel about reuniting for a reunion special?

Frazer Harrison/Getty Images

Paris Hilton has expressed how much she loves to be sharing the screen with Nicole Richie again. "I'm so excited to be doing this with Nicole on Peacock. Nicole has been my best friend since we're 2 years old, every memory that I have is with her," (via E! News).

Nicole also posted a few throwback moments from The Simple Life on her Instagram, but the most notable one is the video mashup of them singing "Sanasa, Sanasa" over and over. "20 years ago, not only did we become television stars… we became song writers. Happy Anniversary Sill @parishilton#TheSimpleLife#sannnasaaaaa" she wrote in the caption.

What have Paris and Nicole said about their reunion special?

Peacock

Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie sat down with W Magazine to let the world know the Paris & Nicole: The Encore show is on its way! Not only that, but fans can expect to see an Opera version of the show they fell in love with two decades ago. Paris said, "The idea of the opera was unexpected" while Nicole chimed in with, "What people need, even though they don't know it yet, is for 'Sanasa' to be an opera.'"

The two besties came up with the idea via a series of texts that started off as ideas between them. Nicole said everything "came up organically" for the two and we can only imagine the memories this brought up for them. OG influencer Paris even talked about how The Simple Life was an "important show in pop culture history" and we couldn't agree more!

Nicole truly wants people to enjoy themselves while watching Paris & Nicole: The Encore and "find the same joy" she had while filming it. According to Paris, she feels what they have is "magic" because "there's just so much history behind it."

It's not every day that you can get to have fun with your best friend while coming up with long-lasting memories that contribute to pop culture, but Paris and Nicole have always danced to the beat of their own drums. Now we'll get to see them in action again!
