9 Things to Look for in a New Home When You’re Expecting

You’re in the market for a new home and comparing finds to the wishlist you made after you got your first real job. Hardwood floors? Check. Concrete countertops? Check. Floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook your fave little bistro/bar? Check. But now that you’re about to become a mom, home buying takes on a whole new meaning. Instead of checking off a list of aesthetic awesomeness, you need to seek an intersection of form and function. This doesn’t have to mean trading in the home of your dreams for something that might as well say, “Welcome to Grandma’s!” You can still have the architectural fantasy that you’ve been pinning on your vision boards since you were 12 — just consider adding a few extras to your must-haves.

1. The Right Number of Rooms: You need a bedroom, and so does your soon-to-be baby, so a 2BR should do fine… Right? Down the road your family may expand by one, two, or more. You can’t completely predict how many kiddos you’ll have 10 years from now, but that doesn’t mean you should shortchange yourself when it comes to space. Adding one extra bedroom to your list gives you the square footage you’ll need if you have another child (or two). And in the meantime, you’ll have a spacious guest room for when family and friends visit.

2. Baby-Friendly Flooring. Flooring isn’t exactly an unchangeable aspect of your future home. But you may not want to spend money redoing the carpets or adding ridiculously fluffy rugs to your hardwoods down the road. In mere months your baby will be crawling around, so unless your budget includes flooring, look down and ask yourself, “Would I put my baby on that floor?” If the answer is no, keep on looking.

3. A Yard (or a Nearby Park): Whether you want your baby to feel the grass beneath their feet or you’ll anticipating a tot who’s all about slides and climbers, you need an outdoor playspace. Not all homes have their own yards, and that’s okay. If you’re looking for a home in the city or there’s just a serious lack of green, ask your real estate agent where the nearest parks are. A walk of a few blocks to a public playspace is a decent substitute for a yard of your own.

4. Easily Navigable Stairs: Those clear acrylic stairs have a fresh, contemporary look, but they’re also easy to slip on. Look for a home that has sturdy stairs that your slightly off-balance pregnant self won’t tumble down. This must-have will also come in handy when you have a toddling tot.

5. Gate-Ability of Spaces: When your baby is in that precious carrying stage, it really doesn’t matter what spaces are where. But when your kiddo starts crawling or walking, you won’t want them wandering into the kitchen, bathroom, or just about anywhere else you aren’t, which means using doors and baby gates. If there’s no reasonable way to keep baby from strolling down the stairs or into another potentially dangerous place, you need to take a pass.

6. A School You Like: In five years, when your kiddo is a kindergartner, you may have outgrown this home and moved on, in which case it doesn’t really matter whether you pick the best school district in the area. But then again, you might looooove your home so much that you stay, which means you’ll either need to send your child to whatever public school is there or pay for a private education. Along with planning for the future, you may also need to consider a home that’s near your daycare of choice.

7. Ease of Entry: Imagine what it would be like to come home with a trunk packed with grocery bags, a baby, and no one to help you. Walking up a few dozen outdoor stairs or having to park down the street just won’t do. You need a home that has an easy entry point that doesn’t require a half-hour of cardio to get to.

8. Quietly Nice Neighbors: Picture Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne in Neighbors: You don’t want a frat house abutting your new family home. Right now you need quiet time to rest your pregnant body, and in a few months you’ll be encouraging your baby to fall into a normal sleep schedule. And noisy neighbors won’t let that happen.

9. Safety, Safety Everywhere: Don’t turn baby-proofing into the worst job ever. You want a home that lends itself to safety — and this means more than just what you can see. Hire a home inspector to make sure that the electrical system is up to code, the heater isn’t about to have a meltdown, and everything is as safe as it can be.

Something about the literal life-or-death stakes in the operating room makes the personal stakes feel even juicier, and thanks to shows like Doctor Odyssey and Grey's Anatomy, it's never been a better time to be a medical drama fan. Milo Ventimiglia Is A "Sweet And Attentive" Father-To-Be, And Duh!!!

Norman Mailer, I'm pregnant! This might be a memorable line from an equally memorable Gilmore Girls episode, but it's now also a reality for one of the show's stars because Milo Ventimiglia is expecting his first child! The actor married model and entrepreneur Jarah Mariano in the fall of 2023 at a tiny, private ceremony (a move that was very Jess Mariano of him), and on September 29, Jarah announced she's pregnant!

Milo Ventimiglia and Jarah Mariano just showed up at Brian Bowen Smith's ‘Joyride’ exhibit at Studio CT in California, and one source tells People Milo was “sweet and attentive to his wife throughout the whole event.” Duh!!

He “seemed very proud to be with her" while Jarah looked "radiant and glowing," as she always does. “Milo was kissing her and whispering into her ear," the source continues. "They were just genuinely lovely together.”

Yes, Jarah Mariano announced her pregnancy with an Instagram post featuring a surf session with Milo Ventimiglia. In the photos, Jarah is sitting on a surfboard wearing a brown bikini top, polka dot bikini bottoms, and a pink lei. "Baby on board!" she says in the caption.

After his time on Gilmore Girls, Milo played patriarch Jack Pearson on NBC's This Is Us, and told US Weekly in 2017 that "I think I’m built to want a strong family unit. “It will happen when it happens. I’m not out seeking it. It’s just kind of, I’m present in the space in my life that when it presents itself and it’s right, I’m sure it will work out.”

And it looks like it worked out at the exact right time.

Keri Russell "Would Totally" Do 'Felicity' Reboot — On One Condition

Reboots and rewatches are all the rage right now, and for good reason. They're nostaltic, they're cozy, and they really make me wish I was a teenager in the 00s. In addition to Scott Patterson saying he's "always hopeful" for Gilmore Girls to come back, Keri Russell just revealed how much she'd love to revisit Felicity, too!

    While promoting The Diplomat season 2, Keri Russell said she'd love to bring the series back if the story made sense. “I would totally do that if it was the right stuff,” she told E! News. “Mandy had a good pitch for it, actually. A really good pitch for, like… life wasn’t going great and, you know, didn’t work out. And she was supposed to be all these things. And then she bumps into someone…Never say never!"

    In case you haven't seen the show (which ran from 1998-2002 and is available to stream on Hulu, FYI), Felicity follows Keri Russell's titular character, who's in for a rude awakening when she follows her high school crush to college in New York City. But once she's there, she realizes just how big the Big Apple really is.

    The series also starred Scott Speedman as Ben Covington, Scott Foley as Noel Crane, Amy Jo Johnson as Julie Emrick, and Tangi Miller as Elena Tyler. Keri actually said they "all still talk all the time!”

    “They’re like my total pals,” she says.

    What else has the cast said about bringing Felicity back?

    Scott Foley told ET that he'd consider coming back for another installment of Felicity, even though he's been against a reboot in the past. "I had always said I wouldn't — you know, there's no reason to do anything," he said. "But just to be with them again, I think would be really nice... When we did the 20th reunion down in Texas at the [ATX Television Festival], we were onstage in a panel answering questions, and I missed being with them."

    "I don't know if it could ever really happen, you know, Felicity was such a specific show at a specific time that took took place in a specific moment in people's lives," he continues. "And it's really hard to recapture — especially with the amount of gray going on right now."

    In March, Greg Gunberg (who played Sean Blumberg) hinted that there'd be some "GIGANTIC Felicity News Coming VERY Soon."

    So are we getting a Felicity reboot? It looks like, in Keri Russell's words, never say never!

Shortly after the news was revealed, The Diplomat creator Debora Cahn shared (per Variety), “After an amazing summer shooting in the U.K., we brought London home to NY.” She continued, “Best of both worlds—filming in Brooklyn. We love doing this.
