14 #Genius Last-Minute Pumpkin Carving Hacks

If you haven’t already noticed, all things jack-o’-lanterns are totally trending right now. Whether it’s pretty painted ones or paper-covered beauties, we are all about finding the easiest pumpkin decor ideas out there. If you are still determined to carve that pumpkin before fright night, we’ve got some #genius hacks from all over the interwebs. From power tools to spices to stencil tricks, here are 14 pumpkin carving hacks to save you hassle and double your fun. Carve on, friends!

1. Break out the ice cream scooper. Use an ice cream scooper instead of a regular spoon for scooping out pumpkin guts. No more bent spoon handles, hooray! (via HGTV)

2. Spray them with bleach. Spray your carved pumpkins with a diluted bleach solution to preserve them so your decorations last past the trick-or-treating. (via The Chic Site)

3. Place silica gel packs in them. You know those little silica gel packs that you find in shoeboxes? Putting them in the bottom of jack-o’-lanterns extends their life! The packets trap moisture and help prevent mold. (via Stockpiling Mom)

4. Use string lights instead of candles. Wrap a strand of lights around a glass mason jar and secure wires with tape. Cut a hole in your hollowed-out pumpkin for the cord, then place the jar inside. The bright lights will actually show off your designs better than a traditional candle. Shine bright like… a pumpkin?? (via Martha Stewart)

5. Spread the jelly. Petroleum jelly, that is. After carving your pumpkin, brush a film of petroleum jelly over all carved surfaces (including the inside of your pumpkin). The jelly acts like a barrier to seal in moisture and slow down the dehydration process of the pumpkin. (via Pumpkin Carving 101)

6. Trace with dry erase markers (not Sharpies). Use dry erase markers to draw designs directly onto your pumpkins before carving. Wipe off the pumpkin with a wet paper towel after carving and no one will be the wiser. (via Parent Hacks)

7. Give your pumpkin a chimney. Make sure to carve a small hole in the top of your pumpkin lid to allow oxygen and smoke in and out and keep your jack-o’-lantern glowing bright. Of course, this hack only applies if you’re using a real candle. (via Serious Eats)

8. Harness your power drill skills. Use an electric drill and different-sized drill bits to quickly create symmetrical holes and make a pretty pumpkin. (via HGTV)

9. Use baking tools. Break out of the mold! Cookie cutters can be used for more than just cutting cookies. Use a cookie cutter and a rubber mallet to carve pumpkins to perfection. You’ll get an even, symmetrical design every time. (via Lowes)

10. Sprinkle a bit of cinnamon. Sprinkle cinnamon on the underside of your pumpkin’s lid. When your jack-o’-lantern is lit, your porch will smell like pumpkin pie. PUMPKIN PIE! (via M Live)

11. Start from the bottom up. Save yourself the hassle of cutting out a pumpkin top. Just carve a hole in the bottom of your pumpkin big enough for your candle. You can do this all will-nilly and throw away your pumpkin bottom because no one will ever see it. (via BHG)

12. Pick up a carving stencil. Print out a carving template, tape it to your pumpkin and use a paperclip to poke holes through the template, outlining the design onto your pumpkin. Then get to carving. We have some free downloads here and here but there are literally thousands of free templates online.

13. Cut the lid at an angle. Remember to cut the top of your pumpkin at an angle so when you go to place the top back on it won’t fall through. Admit it… we’ve all made this mistake. (via The Kitchn)

14. Use a wax-free paper transfer stencil for easier carving. Poking a design onto a pumpkin through a template can be tedious. Try using Saral Wax-Free Transfer Paper instead. You’ll cut carving time in half! (via This Old House)

Pumpkin season is upon us (yay!) and hopefully you've been getting your PSL fix in every form possible. Although carving pumpkins is fun and satisfying, the process is also pretty messy and difficult.

This fall, ditch the carving tools and decorate them with paint, glue, and felt. If you're not sure of where to start, check out these easy DIYs for a cactus, unicorn, s'mores, and flamingo version.

Cactus Pumpkin

It doubles as Halloween decor AND as a plant that'll never die!

Materials:

  • pumpkin
  • a planter with a lip that is slightly smaller than the pumpkin
  • green paint, one darker and one lighter
  • paint brushes
  • scissors
  • pink felt
  • hot glue gun

Paint your pumpkin the darker green and let dry. Apply a second coat and let dry. Paint light green stripes along the pumpkin's natural grooves.

Cut a strip of pink felt with one petal-like edge, like the photo above, and roll it into a tight cylinder, adding hot glue along the straight edge to secure. Fan out the petals to make a flower. Place the painted pumpkin on the planter and hot glue the flower to the pumpkin.

Unicorn Pumpkin

The cutest little uni you ever did see.

Materials:

  • pumpkin
  • white, pink, purple, blue, and black felt
  • embroidery floss
  • scissors
  • hot glue gun
  • white paint
  • paint brush

Paint two coats of white paint over your pumpkin, letting the paint dry between coats.

Cut out felt shapes like the photo above. You'll want two quarter-circle shapes, two eyelash shapes, two white ear shapes, and two pink inside ear shapes.

To make the horn, layer the two quarter circle shapes on top of each other and roll into a horn shape. Secure with glue. Wrap embroidery floss around the horn and secure with glue.

To make the ears, glue the pink ear shapes on the white ear shapes. Then, glue the bottom corners of the ears together. Glue the eyelashes, the ears, and the horn to your pumpkin.

For the mane, cut fringed pieces from your pink, purple, and blue felt. Starting from the bottom back of your pumpkin, glue them in a line to form the mane. If you want to add bangs on your uni, glue the fringe between the uni's ears before gluing on the horn.

S'mores Pumpkin

Cute as a button… just remember to not eat them!

Materials:

  • white mini pumpkin
  • brown pen
  • cardboard cut into a 3 ½ x 3 ½ inch square (this size may depend on the size of your pumpkin)
  • cork cut into a 3 x 3 inch square (this size may depend on the size of your pumpkin)
  • brown felt
  • scissors
  • hot glue gun

Draw nine dots on your cardboard squares in an even grid to create the graham crackers. Wrap brown felt around your cork square like you would wrap a present. If you don't have cork, just layer two cardboard square together. This will be your chocolate.

Glue the “chocolate" on one “graham cracker." Glue the pumpkin to the chocolate and then glue another “graham" on top of the pumpkin.

Flamingo Pumpkin

Let's Flamingle.

Materials:

  • pumpkin
  • pink paint
  • paint brush
  • hot glue gun
  • pink, yellow, black, and orange foam (or construction paper)
  • scissors

Paint two coats of pink paint over your pumpkin, letting it dry between coats.

Cut out foam shapes like the photo above. You'll want two flamingo necks, two beaks, two white face pieces, two orange circles, two black circles, two pink wings, and one pink tail.

Assemble the face by gluing a black beak, a white face, and an orange and black eye on one pink flamingo neck. Glue on the other pink flamingo neck, and assemble the foam pieces on the back side of the neck.

Glue the neck, the wings, and the tail onto the pumpkin. Foam is a little harder to stick on a pumpkin, so be sure to use plenty of glue.

Pink looks good on you :)

Okay, we already know that Nobody Wants This season 2 is on its way, and that it's going to feature a new love interest for Morgan (bye bye Sasha!), and on March 7, Netflix gave us a brand new piece of info: the series is now filming! And Kirsten Bell and Adam Brody are getting cozy — not that I'm surprised.

Here's what we know about Nobody Wants This season 2 filming.

Kirsten Bell and Adam Brody are back as Joanne and Noah!

Netflix

Nobody Wants This is in production as of March 7, 2025 — and new episodes are set to premiere on Netflix this year! Two seasons in two years? We are so back.

In the first production image from season 2, Joanne and Noah are lying on the couch with Noah's arm wrapped around Joanne. Joanne's wearing a navy and red jacket while Noah's opted for a dark gray hoodie. Cozy!

Nobody Wants This season 2 was renewed in October of 2024. Creating Nobody Wants This will forever be a career highlight for me," creator and executive producer Erin Foster said in a statement. "The incredible cast, crew, producers and executives all made this into the show it is today, and to experience viewers' reactions to this series now that it's out in the world has been more than anything I could have dreamed."

Executive producer and showrunner Bruce Eric Kaplan added that the rom-com TV show "is such a unique and beautiful show and I am already having the best time working on it.”

We've had a blast watching it — and I know viewers are going to enjoy all the new episodes.

Where is Nobody Wants This season 2 filming?

Adam Rose/Netflix

Season 2 is in production in Los Angeles, California, where they filmed season 1.

If you're a loyal fan of Yellowstone and its gripping mix of drama, family dynamics, and Western grit, then you're probably familiar with the genius behind the show: Taylor Sheridan.

As both a writer and director with a ranching background, he's perfected a unique style that blends heart-pounding action with complex characters.

But while Yellowstone has undoubtedly made its mark on television, Taylor's talents extend beyond the small screen. If you can't get enough of his storytelling, here are six Taylor Sheridan films you need to check out.

Scroll to see which Taylor Sheridan movies you should watch if you love YellowstoneASAP!

Lionsgate

1. Sicario (2015)

Sicario is one of Taylor Sheridand's standout works. This crime thriller features FBI agent Kate Macer, played by Emily Blunt, as she's selected for a top-secret task force to win the war on drugs. She goes to the United States-Mexico border to tackle the cartel, working alongside a team of shadowy operatives.

Much like Yellowstone, Sicario, directed by Denis Villeneuve, thrives on suspense, intense violence, and morally complex characters.

CBS Films

2. Hell or High Water (2016)

If you're looking for a Sheridan film that most closely mirrors the world of Yellowstone, this movie might be the answer.

Hell or High Water is a neo-Western that follows Toby, a father struggling to save his family's ranch from foreclosure, who teams up with his ex-convict brother to rob banks in a desperate attempt to keep their land.

It blends classic Western themes with modern drama and explores deep family bonds amidst the harsh realities of financial hardship.

Acacia Filmed Entertainment

3. Wind River (2017)

Taylor Sheridan both wrote and directed Wind River, which features Cory Lamber (Jeremy Renner), a wildlife officer, and FBI agent Jane Banner (Elizabeth Olsen) as they investigate the murder of a young woman on a Native American reservation.

This film marked his directorial debut and showed off his skill in blending suspense with themes of prejudice, Native American struggles, and the violence of the American West.

Lionsgate

4. Sicario: Day Of The Soldado (2018)

In this follow-up to the original Sicario, agents Matt Graver and Alejandro Gillick return to the United States-Mexico border when the cartel starts smuggling terrorists into the U.S. The situation escalates when the agents kidnap the kingpin's daughter as leverage.

This sequel definitely didn't receive the same love as its predecessor, but Sicario: Day Of The Soldado is still a strong Saturday night movie pick for people who love storylines and character types like those in Yellowstone.

New Line Cinema

5. Those Who Wish Me Dead (2021)

Those Who Wish Me Dead follows Connor, a boy who's on the run from two hitmen during a wildfire. He teams up with a female smokejumper, trying to contain the flames as the killers pursue them.

This action-packed thriller has some of the same rural charm that fans love about Yellowstone, but presents a totally different narrative. It's tense, rated R, and stars Finn Little, Angelina Jolie, and Jake Weber, just to name a few.

Paramount+

6. Finestkind (2023)

Last but not least, Finestkind is based on two brothers from opposite sides of the tracks who reunite during adulthood in Boston. As they grapple with personal struggles, they turn to an organized crime syndicate for help and end up in a risky situation.

Given its urban setting and different character types, this movie might not seem anything like Yellowstone. Nonetheless, it shares key themes of family and moral conflict. Oh, and did we mention Jenna Ortega's (Wednesday, You) in it?!
