These days, Ariel Winter is known for being body positive and unafraid of the haters, but that hasn’t always been the case. Having grown up in the spotlight, she admittedly struggled with her image, particularly prior to undergoing a breast reduction. Luckily, she had role models such as Sofia Vergara, who she says encouraged her to embrace her curves (“Working with Sofia Vergara and growing up with her was great, because she was, you know, a really amazing, curvy role model for me,” she told The Cut), as well as TV big sister Sarah Hyland to turn to.
In a new interview with People, Hyland spoke out on how important it was for her to help Winter navigate the waters of the harsh criticism that can come with fame. “I like to think we — me, Julie Bowen, and Sofia Vergara — helped her be confident with her body and herself,” she said. “I mean, she was 11 years old when I met her. I was 18. I tried to be a good role model for her, and a true older sister for her because she’s such a sweet little girl.”
As you’ll recall, Hyland has had to deal with her own fair share of bullies, who used to body-shame the star for being “too thin.” She revealed her trick for dealing with the haters, telling People, “It’s about being confident in yourself, and not letting people’s hateful words get to you. Just surround yourself with positivity and not let the negativity get to you.”
All of that sisterly advice certainly appears to be paying off. As Winter has said of Vergara recently, “She helped me learn to accept the way I looked and love it and dress for it, and feel good about myself.”
Mission: accomplished.
