7 Old School Scary TV Shows For All The '90s Kid Nostalgia

Scary TV Shows

Before I began my horror moviefixation, I used to watch a handful of spooky TV shows in the '90s and early 2000's. I was a huge fan of creature features, but I started to get into true crime and reality style TV series as I got older. You remember the ones — they came on later at night, had wacky graphics, and left your teeth chattering while you laid in bed later on? Yeah, those.

As a rite of passage, I've started to introduce my kid to some of the things I watched because he's developed his own affinity for thriller movies and shows. We'll blame that on my intense desire to watch the most horrific things during my pregnancy...

Need a reminder of which shows '90s kids used to watch? I have 7 that you'll be searching for on Netflix, HBO Max, Peacock, or Amazon Prime after you read this!

Nickelodeon

Are You Afraid of the Dark?

My sister and I used to watch this with the curtains closed so we could mimic the group of teens who'd trade scary stories around a campfire. Known as The Midnight Society, these teens would meet in the woods and one would be chosen to relay the spooky tale of the night.

What you'd see next is a physical depiction of the story being told — and some of them were beyond spooky! I used to cover my eyes so I couldn't see all the jump scares, but at least two or three would catch me off guard!

You can stream Are You Afraid of the Dark? on Amazon Prime!

Scholastic

Goosebumps

Author R.L. Stine is known for creating the memorable Goosebumps book series, so my sister and I were overjoyed when they based a TV show on our favorite spooky reads. From the evil Slappy the Dummy to the squelching sponge underneath a family's sink, this show kept us on our feet.

Unfortunately, our mom wasn't the biggest fan of the way my sister and I were glued to the TV whenever new episodes would air. Sorry, mom!

You can stream Goosebumps on Netflix!

Cartoon Network

Courage the Cowardly Dog

If you're not saying, "The things we do for love" on a weekly basis, did you really watch Courage the Cowardly Dog? I'm so glad this show is available on HBO Max because it was one of the biggest shows '90s kids watched.

Living with his owners Eustache and Muriel in the middle of nowhere, Courage tried to warn them of suspicious, weird, or spooky characters that would stop by. Unfortunately, they were the only ones who never understood what Courage was trying to say until it was almost too late.

Were the episodes repetitive? Yes, but the characters weren't, so it never mattered!

You can stream Courage the Cowardly Dog on HBO Max!

ABC

Tales From the Cryptkeeper

I shouldn't have been watching Tales From the Crypt as a kid, but you can blame that on my dad! Unlike the show for adults, this was meant to be a tamer version for kids. The Cryptkeeper still told spooky stories, but we got to see him battle different characters who wanted to be the hosts of his show.

The Cryptkeeper still looked spooky with his sparse strands of hair, but the weird green color made him look more comical in this series.

You can stream Tales From the Crypt on Amazon Prime!

Nickolodeon

Aaahh!!! Real Monsters

This show was as spooky as it was kooky, but I couldn't get enough of it. It followed three friends — Ickis, Oblina, and Krumm — as they attended a school for monsters. Somehow they'd always end up on weird adventures that would land them in direct contact with humans, nature, or other monsters. This would irritate their school's headmaster, The Gromble, to no end!

You can stream Aaahh!!! Real Monsters on Paramount+!

Lifetime Television

Unsolved Mysteries

My fiancé and I revisited old episodes of Unsolved Mysteries shortly after I gave birth, and it put me on the path of all things true crime. Hosted by Raymond Burr, each episode featured details from unsolved cases where some of the victims met grisly ends.

If you want a good scare, turn off all the lights and binge watch the first season tonight.

You can stream Unsolved Mysteries on Peacock!

Twentieth Century Fox

Scariest Places on Earth

Have you ever wanted to visit a haunted house or area without leaving home? Scariest Places on Earth was the tv show you wanted to watch. Hosted by Linda Blair, the tv series would follow different families as they visited haunted places in the U.S.
It was basically a reality TV show, but some of the details of what happened at different places was enough to send chills down anyone's spines.

You can stream Scariest Places on Earth on Apple TV+!

I was already excited for Christopher Nolan's next epicafter hearing Tom Holland was involved — but then when we learned Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong'o, and even more of our favorite stars were going to costar? I didn't know I could feel so much excitement. Universal recently revealed that the new movie will be an adaptation of Homer's The Odyssey. And after Gladiator 2, the ancient world has never been hotter.

Here's everything you need to know about Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey cast before the new movie sails into theaters July 17, 2026.

Meet 'The Odyssey' Movie Cast

www.tiktok.com

#greenscreen okay but let’s talk about this CAST🔥🔥🔥 #oppenheimer #theodyssey #annehathaway #annehathawayedit #zendaya #tomholland #zendayatomholland #robertpattinson #lupitanyongo #christophernolan

Matt Damon

Matt Damon is known for roles in Good Will Hunting and Jason Bourne, and he just starred in Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer.

Tom Holland

In addition to the Spider-Man films, Tom Holland recently starred in The Crowded Room and Cherry, both on Apple TV.

Jon Bernthal

Jon Bernthal may be best known for The Bearright now, but he's more than just "Cousin." Bernthal's starred in many projects, including The Walking Dead, We Own This City, and King Richard.

Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway had a great 2024 with The Idea of You, and we'll see The Princess Diaries actress in Colleen Hoover's Verity movie soon!

Zendaya

We saw Zendaya in Dune 2 and Challengers last year, and in addition to joining The Odyssey cast, she'll return as Rue in Euphoria season 3.

Lupita Nyong’o

Lupita Nyong'o totally made us cry during The Wild Robot and A Quiet Place: Day One, and she'll probably do the same in The Odyssey TBH.

Robert Pattinson

Mickey17 and The Batman Part II are two of Robert Pattinson's upcoming movies, in addition to another job with Zendaya called The Drama.

Charlize Theron

Charlize Theron recently starred in FastX as well as Netflix's The School for Good and Evil and Marvel's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Who does Tom Holland play in The Odyssey?

While we have The Odyssey cast list, we haven't gotten confirmation on which roles the actors are playing...yet. (Although to be fair, we also don't know if this will be a classic adaptation or a reimagining). However, fans are already speculating who we'll see in each role!

I'd love for Robert Pattinson to star as Odysseus alongside Anne Hathaway as Penelope and Tom Holland as Telemachus. Zendaya would be amazing as Athena, while Lupita Nyong'o would definitely stun as Circe. Who knows — maybe we'll see some unexpected casting choices too! Charlize Theron as Zeus and Matt Damon as Poseidon? Yes please.

Who is the villain in The Odyssey?

There's more than one villain in The Odyssey, but one role that definitely stands out is Poseidon. The sea god does everything he can to prevent Odysseus from returning to Ithaca during his sea voyage. TLDR; this definitely isn't your average vacation cruise.

These days, there’s two very likely outcomes you’re facing when you pull up to your go-to grocery store: the egg section is either completely empty or the options for eggs are severely limited. The options that are available will unfortunately cost you an arm and a leg – I saw dozens going for a whopping $10 at Whole Foods this week, but it’s apparently “not unheard of” for a dozen eggs to run as high as $12.

So, where are the eggs? And why are eggs so expensive right now? Scroll on for the answer and what you can do about it.

Why are there no eggs?

There’s a massive shortage of eggs because of avian influenza – AKA bird flu. It wiped out roughly 10% of commercial poultry in the last three months alone, contributing to a notable loss in egg production and sales. Bird flu first appeared in January 2022 and has since affected 136 million birds.

Why are eggs so expensive right now?

Leeloo The First / PEXELS

Eggs are so expensive right now because bird flu has significantly and suddenly decreased the supply of eggs, which is not large enough to meet the needs of consumers. Grocers are now paying around $7 for a dozen eggs, and for the sake of profiting, have adjusted their egg prices to be higher.

General inflation has also contributed to higher prices for eggs. Per the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average price per dozen of Grade A eggs in December 2023 was $2.51. In December 2024 it was $3.65, noting a 45% increase over the previous year.

Will egg prices go down?

Nadin Sh / PEXELS

Bird flu cases continue to rise, so it’s not very likely that egg prices will go down any time soon. In fact, it’s more likely they’ll continue to get more expensive. Because of this, you may continue to see no eggs or a limited supply of them at the grocery store.

Many stores have also begun to enforce limits on their eggs to one carton per customer per trip.

What do I do without eggs?

Mart Production / PEXELS

Nothing can really replace a good ol’ egg, but there are several alternatives you can test out for yourself to fill in the gaps if you can’t get your hands on a dozen. For baking projects like cookies and cakes, flax eggs – made with ground flaxseed and water – or applesauce are common substitutes that result in a similar, egg-like texture. If you’re craving a traditional scrambled egg, you may give tofu scramble or vegan egg alternatives like Just Egg a go.

There are some differences when it comes to fans of Taylor Sheridan's TV shows. Some of us are anticipating 1923 season 2 and The Madison, others are mourning the fact 1883 only got a single season — or that Yellowstone actually came to a close. (Be honest, did you roast Taylor for casting Bella Hadid as his girlfriend?). No matter what camp you're in, I rounded up all of Taylor Sheridan's best TV shows in one place so you can see which title you wanna binge watch next.

Here are all of the best Taylor Sheridan TV shows, from Yellowstone to 1923.

Stop what you're doing because Rebecca Yarros just announced she's not done with the Empyrean series! I've been dragging my feet while reading Onyx Storm(I just don't want it to end, okay?!), but that hasn't stopped me from wondering what's next for Violet & co! The rollout for book no. 3 broke Target's website January 21st, so I know fans are currently losing their minds over any news they can get on the Empyrean books. Well, the Fourth Wingauthor has plenty more to share with us, thankfully!

Here are all the juicy details Rebecca Yarros spilled about the Empyrean series!

1. Don't Hold Your Breath For A Love Triangle

If you're looking for Violet and Xaden's romance to be complicated by someone else, you'll have to write your own fan fiction because Rebecca Yarros isn't having it. She appeared on Good Morning America and said, "I’m not really a fan of love triangles. I’m just not." But that's not a sign our favorite lovers won't face anymore troubling situations.

“Doesn’t mean I’m not going to make them work for it, though," Yarros added.

2. Violet & Xaden's Story Is Still Unfolding

Eager readers want to know if Violet & Xaden are endgame or destined to fail, but Rebecca's not giving us any spoilers. "I think you should read Onyx Storm, see where we leave off, kind of go from there," she continued. "But you never know. You’ve got [a romantic arc] across five books."

3. We'll Get More Of Xaden's POV

Xaden's not the first or last guy readers will fall for, but he's certainly cast his shadows over our hearts. Rebecca knows this and assured fans tuned into her segment that he has more to say. "I usually write one chapter in Xaden’s point of view per book ... and then sometimes there’s bonus chapters."

4. She's Writing Two More Books In The Empyrean Series, But We Have To Wait

According to PEOPLE, Onyx Storm is NOT the final book in the Empyrean Series. Also, Yarros already knows which direction books 4 and 5 are headed in. "They're plotted out but I haven't started [the next one]," she said because she's "taking a little bit of a break to rest and recuperate."

She talked about being on "deadline for two and half years" which sounds like she was under pressure to deliver something her fans would fall in love with. Her current goal is to give herself time before she jumps into "writing the next books," but she promises "they're coming."
