How an Entrepreneur Uses Travel to Inspire Her Eco-Friendly Decor Brand

You might be a bit of a decor geek if you spend your lunch break scouring online home decor shops and your fave DIY YouTube channels to plan out your ultimate living room, bedroom, or bathroom. Perhaps your friends seek your advice for making over a tiny space because you’ve converted your studio apartment into a collection of adorable DIY goods. In this week’s installment of the How to Quit Your Day Job series, we chat with Jala Smith-Huys, founder of Seek & Swoon, about how she started an eco-friendly decor brand that specializes in travel-inspired throws.

Meet the decor Pro: jala Smith-huys

Before launching Seek & Swoon, Smith-Huys began her career in journalism and public relations. She previously was a graphic designer, creative director, and social media strategist before becoming inspired to start her home decor brand in 2015. After a two-month sabbatical in Europe, traveling with her husband and two young sons, Smith-Huys came back inspired to take her travels and create a keepsake that would remind her of her adventures. Using recycled cotton yarn that’s regenerated from apparel factories’ cutting room floors, Seek & Swoon makes throws for home and baby, as well as custom wedding throws.

The Tips

1. Use your past skills. The combination of Smith-Huys’ previous jobs really helped her as a solo entrepreneur. Through her careers in journalism and public relations, she developed a strong writing style. Her skills gained as a designer and creative director not only inform her throw designs, but also her website, labels, and everything visual about her brand. As a social media consultant, she’d worked with startups and big brands. And watching what worked (and what didn’t) in social media influenced how she ran her business. “All of those experiences have come in handy as I’ve worked to build and grow my own brand,” says Smith-Huys.

2. Seek the right partners. Since Seek & Swoon is all about eco-friendly throws, Smith-Huys spent a considerable amount of time searching for the right manufacturing partner. It took her over six months to track down the ideal mill to partner with. “Not only did I need to find a mill who had the capabilities to produce my product, I needed to find a mill I could trust, who would take me seriously even as a startup, and who would be able and willing to grow with me,” Smith-Huys explains. While the search delayed her company’s launch, she’s confident in the decision to work with a second-generation family-owned mill.

3. Experiment and learn. Curating the right balance among trends, what customers want, and designs she’s drawn to is a constantly evolving process. Smith-Huys says that there is a lot of experimenting, testing, and learning that goes on before a throw is made available for purchase. Sustainability was an important part of Smith-Huys’ process, and while her recycled yarn is more expensive than new yarn, she knew she wanted a product that helped keep waste out of landfills.

4. Turn inspiration into a product. Peruse Seek & Swoon’s throws and you’ll see countries attached to the product names. Smith-Huys is inspired by her travels to places she’s been or wants to visit someday. “The Sol Throw is my interpretation of the sunset view we had from our rooftop balcony in the heart of Madrid. The Krona Throw is a take on a traditional textile pattern we found while in Dubrovnik, Croatia. And the Kanna Throw was inspired by the airplane view we had flying over Iceland,” shares Smith-Huys. “It’s hard not to be inspired by travel. There’s a lot of beauty out there — shapes, colors, texture — it’s everywhere.” Once inspiration hits, she draws on her computer. Sometimes her vision comes together in her first attempt, and other times her concept doesn’t translate into a final design. Once a pattern is ready, the mill produces a sample throw. From there, she’ll make final tweaks before uploading it to her online shop and publicizing on her social media channels. “The process can be weeks up to months, depending on how all of those steps fall into place.”

5. You have nothing to lose. Smith-Huys admits that it took her a long time to finally make the jump to start Seek & Swoon. “I spent over a decade fearing the leap. I think I finally got so fed up with my fear (and my own failure to launch) that it lit a fire under me that I couldn’t ignore,” Smith-Huys admits. Her best advice for beating the fear: “Trust your gut, find your tribe, and just do it.”

6. Find your tribe. Smith-Huys revels in how her small business has grown by leaps and bounds with the support of a creative community of like-minded individuals, including key retail partners, Instagram collaborators, and loyal customers. “I’ve met some really fun, creative, kind, and generous people who have shown a sincere interest in what I’m doing. They may not be my close friends and family, but they’ve unexpectedly become a huge part of why I believe in this business.”

7. Trust your instincts. When working as a solopreneur, it can be easy to be swayed by the opinions of others and second-guess yourself. “When it comes time for me to make a decision that I’m struggling with, I reach out to people I trust, but ultimately I go with my gut and I usually don’t regret it,” encourages Smith-Huys.

Probably everyone would agree that "adulting" is challenging, but nothing is quite as tough as initially launching your career. You're new to the field and uncomfortable, so you're bound to have some awkward moments, missteps, or simply embarrassing situations.

Thankfully, these bumps in the road teach us lessons that we can grow from. Nonetheless, it can still be funny to reflect (and laugh) about those cringe-worthy experiences down the line.

So, a bunch of women recently took to Reddit to share some of the most embarrassing things they did during the early days of their careers, and we've compiled their best stories.

Scroll to see all the most embarrassing things these women admitted to doing at work!

1. She thought a colleague was flirting. Spoiler alert: he wasn't.

Viktoria Slowikowska

"I was new to my role and attending a networking event out of state, lobbying for the first time. I thought one of the commissioners was flirting with me, so I stupidly considered leveraging that. I even gave him my hotel card, but he never came," one user said.

2. She spilled hundreds of hardware pieces down a hill.

cottonbro studio

"It was my first day with a new theater company as their master carpenter. Our shop was multiple buildings away from the theater, and we had to haul our tools and hardware over in shopping carts," a user recalled.

"I tipped over the shopping cart with all the containers of screws, bolts, and so on. Hundreds of little bits of hardware, all down the side of a hill."

3. She accidentally said "love you" to her team.

Edmond Dantès

"I was multitasking on a call and, in the end, when everyone said goodbye, I blurted out, 'Bye, love you!' to the entire team. I was humiliated," another user detailed.

4. She accidentally messaged her own boss about her lackluster raise.

Anna Shvets

"I was working in customer service, and I asked my supervisor for a raise because I was 'error free' and my call time states were pretty good. I had told my coworker (we were both in our early twenties) that I had asked for the raise, too. We were very open about our salaries," remembered one user.

"A couple of weeks later, my supervisor called me over to her cubicle. I sent an IM [instant message] to my coworker and said, 'Supervisor wants to talk to me. Called me over to her desk. I think I got the raise!' Spoiler: I did. It was just like $0.75 an hour or something dumb, but still, I was happy to get a raise," she continued.

"Immediately after, I messaged my coworker again and said something like, 'Yep, I got the raise. It's not as much as I would have liked, but oh well." I sent this to my supervisor and not my coworker. I heard my supervisor laugh and immediately go talk to the manager. I was so embarrassed."

5. She had a bucket of water dumped on her.

cottonbro studio

"Something that happened to me years ago: a woman dropped a bucket of rainwater on my head," revealed a user.

"She wasn't looking down; she meant to do it to one of my coworkers who used to leave trash by her door. She apologized, but still."

6. She fell off her chair (in front of her supervisor).

MART PRODUCTION

"I was working at a park district part-time and I sat at the front desk. One day, I got up to get something from another room. I come back, sit on my chair, and lean back," one user explained.

"I guess I leaned too far back, so I ended up falling on my tailbone. My supervisor was right there. I was like a couple of weeks in, too."

7. She made up her own phonetic alphabet.

Keira Burton

"I was trying to say the phonetic alphabet for a follow-up claim. I had the letter 'Y,' and the only word I could think of was, 'Yam!'" a user said.

"I laugh about it now, and I made the IT guy laugh, so win-win? But I definitely embarrassed myself at the moment."

8. She hit "reply all" while calling someone a jerk.

Mikael Blomkvist

"I hit 'reply all' in an email calling someone out for being a jerk. Ten years later, it's a department inside joke," a final user admitted.

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner may have split back in 2015, but they're spending an awfully lot of time together as of late. Ben's latest divorce from Jennifer Lopez was the split heard 'round the world over the summer of 2024, after giving us the ever-enigmatic 'Bennifer 2.0' and its whirlwind marriage. However, we would be lying if we didn't say we were so sad when he and our favorite 13 Going On 30star ended things almost a decade ago.

Jen and Ben share three children together, and have found a way to successfully co-parent together. But could they be back on their way to finding something more? These two seem to be out and about together quite a lot lately, and it's got us thinking: could Ben reunite with yet another Jennifer from his past? Here's what's going on!

Everything you need to know about the state of Ben Affleck & Jennifer Garner's current relationship.

Kevin Winter/Getty Images

Apparently, Ben Affleck "would love another chance" with Jennifer Garner — at least according to a Page Six source. They told the outlet that he "would definitely be open to giving things another shot with Jen if the timing is ever right." However, the source noted that "Ben knows it’s just not realistic at this time in their lives."

These comments come after the ex-spouses have spent quite a bit of time together, starting with the holiday season and recently culminating in a family paint ball outing.

On March 2, 2025, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner shared a family outing with their kids at a paintball park, according to Page Six. The two seemed really relaxed with one another in the photos, smiling and laughing throughout their time together.

Since then, sources shared with PEOPLEthat the former couple is "on great terms" with each other. They said, "Jen's very happy with Ben. He spends a lot of time with the kids." Another source told people, "They get along great. She makes him laugh like no one else can. She seems happy that Ben's happy."

It's definitely clear that these two still have a unique bond!

Pascal Le Segretain/Getty Images

This isn't the only time the exes have been out together recently. Page Sixreported that Jennifer and Ben were driving out in LA together in early December, ultimately grabbing bagels and heading back to Ben's place. This outing comes after a source shared with PEOPLE that Jen and Ben planned to spend the holidays together in 2024.

"Jen truly just wants her kids to be happy. She will continue to make sure that they spend time together as a family and include Ben," the source said. "They have Christmas plans with the kids too. The kids enjoy when they all spend time together."

Christmas isn't the only holiday this former family of five shared in 2024 either. They all spent Thanksgiving together as well, and a source told Page Sixthat Ben Affleck "felt blessed" for that time together. Apparently, Ben feels like he "can just be himself" when he's with her. “Even though Ben and Jen have been split for a while now, he feels a certain level of comfort with her," the source said. “Ben has a strong relationship with Jen that will never dissipate because they have a lot of history together and she’s the mother of his kids.”

Meanwhile, another source shared with PEOPLEthat Jen, Ben, and their kids all worked together at The Midnight Mission's Thanksgiving Street Fair as well. The source said, “They truly enjoy giving back to their community and cherishing quality time together as a family."

Frazer Harrison/Getty Images

Right now, Jen's technically still dating John Miller, according to PEOPLE. However, we'd be remiss not to notice how close the former couple is at the moment. Could there be rekindled feelings? Is this the REAL second chance love story we deserve? Is it really just about the mutual respect these two have for each other — and their family? Definitely keeping an eye on this space to see what happens next!

Regardless of their romantic relationship status, it's honestly so nice to see Ben spending time with his family at the holidays and beyond. Thankfully his highly dramatized relationship with Jennifer Lopez didn't seem to harm any goodwill Ben has with his kids and ex-wife, and there's something really lovely about that! So, here's hoping this modern family continues to find happiness together!
