Selena Gomez Explains Why She’s Chewing Up Lipstick in Her New “Fetish” Video

Selena Gomez debuted the music video for her new single “Fetish” this week, and the internet had a few… questions. Like why, exactly, the 25-year-old was chowing down on everything from glass to lipstick and using an eyelash curler on her tongue rather than her lashes in the 3:47 minute-long clip.

Luckily, the pop star sat down with the vid’s director (and one of Gomez’s BFFs), Petra Collins, and Dazed to clear up any confusion surrounding the vid (among other things!), so we need wonder no more.

According to Collins, the video actually came out of their shared love of horror films. “It’s still so crazy to me how, when I first heard “Fetish,” I pictured to the backdrop of horror,” she muses.

After sending Gomez some of her own ideas, The Weeknd’s lady apparently jumped on board, making a moodboard of ideas based around horror films. “I made it very clear to you that I didn’t see “Fetish” how most people know the word at face value,” Gomez recalls of her chats with Collins. “When most people hear the word fetish, they think of S&M and all that sexual sh*t, but you didn’t. You knew why I loved it. You told me, ‘I think this song is about love, something crazy and complicated.’”

As the two go back and forth about everything from the energy they passed between them to get the shots down pat to their choice to film in the suburbs, the short film’s underlying message becomes crystal clear: “I love the video because it shows the very dirty, gross, and weird love you can have toward someone. This is how obsessive some people get and how they release,” Collins says.

Hmmm. While we’re not sure how many people “release” by chewing up broken dishes, Gomez included (“I’m not saying I’ve ever done something similar to the kitchen scene,” she clarifies), we suppose it IS possible… in a Fatal Attraction sort of way.

Collins, however, doesn’t see Gomez’s stranger actions in the clip as dark. “You can see this angry, sad, whatever person, but also be in control of it,” she explains. For her, that was part of the point: giving Gomez permission, as a woman, to let go of her feelings, then reign them back in. “Women are always told, ‘Oh, be in control of your feelings,’ and a woman is never allowed to express her anger without being demonized as PMS-y,” she quipped. “It’s not going crazy, it’s going with it; it’s getting final!”

We all know that Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco announced their adorable Taco Bell picnic engagement on December 12, 2024. The post is chalk-full of friend, fan, and celebrity support — including a 'like' from Hailey Bieber, herself. If you're wondering why that may be a big deal, let me break it down for you.

Hailey and Selena both dated Justin Bieber in the 2010's, and there was seemingly a bit of back-and-forth between the three for a few years there. This erupted a "feud" of sorts, leaving Hailey and Selena at odds in the public eye. However, they've continued to show us that any remaining "beef" is squashed.

But now? Now, Justin is sorta stirring the pot a little bit.

On December 16, 2024, Justin posted a selfie with Hailey kissing his cheek — innocuous enough, right? Well, fans noticed he attached "All My Ghosts" by Lizzy McAlpine to the post. The song has since been deleted, but Page Six still has the screenshot to prove it.

People attach songs to posts every day, but this tune in particular caught everyone's attention. In the very sentimental song, Lizzy McAlpine sings:

I can see it now, the wedding of the year

I can see it now, he stands up there and wipes his tears

I can see it now, when all my ghosts disappear

I can see it crystal clear.

Sensing any parallels to Justin's life? Yeah, us too. He could have truly just liked the song — it's great! — but it's pretty hard to ignore the underlying message there. All I know is, I hope these ghosts "disappearing" mean the drama between this trio is officially gone for good. We don't want the girls fighting anymore!

Benny Blanco shared a video of Sel after the proposal as they cheers two glasses of champagne, and Selena Gomez's engagement ring is on full display! I'm also obsessed with the fur coat she wore to the date — it's the perfect shade of bridal white.

The marquise diamond is the perfect cut for Selena because it's both classy and modern but it's also unexpected and romantic all in one. And fans are calling out how Selena sang about marquise diamonds in 2015's "Good For You," so she basically manifested her ring and didn't even know it.

Selena Gomez's engagement is estimated to be around four carats, according to Julia Hackman Chafé, a jewelry content creator and gemstone wholesaler (via TODAY). The larger marquise diamond is set on a chunky gold band made up of smaller .25 carat stones. Gorgeous! And if you're wondering how much is Selena Gomez's ring? “The diamond itself, if Benny chose a high-quality diamond, is probably around $75,000 and up,” Chafé said.

Benny Blanco also revealed his proposal to Selena wasn't your average picnic.

Ever since he popped the question, Selena's been "glowing," and these new videos and all the photos are totally proving it.

Jessica Simpson and her husband Eric Johnson have decided to go their separate ways. After 10 years of marriage, Jessica revealed on January 13 that they've been "navigating" a "painful situation" that arose in their relationship, three months after sources told TMZ the singer reached out to a divorce attorney. But despite the shift in their relationship status, there's one thing Jessica and Eric are focusing on.

The popstar celebrated her kids' return to school in September with a super sweet Instagram post. "Maxwell, Ace and Birdie y’all make your Mom beam with smiles and grace !" she says. Jessica Simpson and Eric Johnson met in 2010 through a mutual friend, and ended up getting engaged six months after they started dating. They were married in July of 2014, where Maxwell and Ace were the flower girl and ring bearer.

The "I Wanna Love You Forever" singer celebrated their 10th anniversary with an Instagram post in May 2020, saying, "I fell head over slippers in love with this perfect man 10 YEARS ago today! By chance he knocked on my dreamy cottage door (sigh), I let him in and never let him leave. He is mine, I am his…forever."

And the couple's decision to announce their separation comes after Jessica posted about "putting up with everything I did not deserve" and about how "life is short."
