Selena Gomez Nabs First Vogue Cover, Explains Why She Ghosted Instagram
Selena Gomez has crossed another fashion milestone. The 24-year-old received the ultimate nod of fashion approval as Vogue’sApril cover girl. And let us tell you, the “Kill Em With Kindness” singer gets extremely candid in her profile.
“As soon as I became the most followed person on Instagram, I sort of freaked out,” she told Vogue. “It had become so consuming to me. It’s what I woke up to and went to sleep to. I was an addict, and it felt like I was seeing things I didn’t want to see, like it was putting things in my head that I didn’t want to care about. I always end up feeling like sh*t when I look at Instagram. Which is why I’m kind of under the radar, ghosting it a bit.”
Gomez previously expressed her dislike for social media during a Netflix panel for the new show she’s producing, 13 Reasons Why. “Unfortunately, kids don’t care. They need something that’s going to shake them. They have to see things that are frightening,” she said. “I can’t stand social media. I can’t stand what they’re looking at. I can’t stand what they think is reality, and this show is as real as you possibly can get.”
In her Vogue interview, Gomez talks about the isolation that comes with traveling. “Tours are a really lonely place for me. My self-esteem was shot. I was depressed, anxious. I started to have panic attacks right before getting on stage, or right after leaving the stage,” she said. “Basically, I felt I wasn’t good enough, wasn’t capable. I felt I wasn’t giving my fans anything, and they could see it—which, I think, was a complete distortion.”
She’s in a much better place now, thanks to no pressure from her label to put out new music consistently and Dialectical Behavior Therapy, which treats borderline personality disorder. “I wish more people would talk about therapy,” she said. “We girls, we’re taught to be almost too resilient, to be strong and sexy and cool and laid-back, the girl who’s down. We also need to feel allowed to fall apart.”
