How To Glow Like A Goddess: Our Top Self-Tanning Tips

As the girlies know, sundress season is finally upon us. It’s time to don a cute little mini and let those legs out! We may be more reluctant to show more skin, courtesy of the dreary, overcast days of winter. Fear not – there are plenty of solutions for even the fairest of complexions. Enter: self tanning. It’s the easiest way to get a sunkissed look without frying in the sun like a little fishstick.

Though the idea of doing your own tan can be daunting, we’ve made it really simple with this how-to guide. Think of this as your personal copy of Self-Tanning For Dummies – we’ve got all the best tips and tricks for looking bronzed all spring and summer. Read on, and glow get ‘em!

The Do's And Don'ts of Self-Tanning

The Do's:

  • First timers, start with a lighter shade. You’ll avoid the embarrassment of looking too dark from your first go-around, plus starting with a gentler hue can help you become more comfortable with the application process.
  • Use gentle cleansers and body washes – they won’t disrupt the self-tan color.
  • You’ll need around-the-clock moisturization, mama. Keeping your self-tanned skin keeps it from cracking and flaking off and creating noticeable gaps or dark patches in your tan.
  • Avoid using retinols and acne treatments – they can fade the tan.
  • Exfoliate. You don’t necessarily have to opt for a physical exfoliant, though. Cleansers with glycolic or salicylic acids are just as effective in buffing away dry, dead skin.

The Don'ts:

  • Don’t pop off on a self-care day while wearing a self tanner. Haircuts, manicures, waxes, and shaving are the main culprits in stripping tanner off of your body.
  • Don’t tan your body before your face. It’s easier to apply tanner correctly (all over the face – yes, even the under eyes and eyelids) to your face with clean hands, to avoid patching. Apply to your face first, wash off those hands, then get to the rest of your hot (and soon to be glowing) bod.
  • Don’t shower the same day you apply self tanner. You’ll erase all the hard work you put into your goddess-like glow. When you do go to shower, don’t crank the temperature up too high. Cooler water helps sustain your tan. While we’re at it, avoid sweating after self tanning – for the sake of smooth-looking skin!
  • Don’t reach for the deodorant or perfume any time soon. These products can further disrupt the tanning color, so if you can steer away from them, the more seamless your tan will be.

How To Pick The Right Self-Tanning Product

There are endless products in the self-tanning universe, and it can be hard to know exactly what to reach for. The process is especially daunting for new self-tanners, considering the one you choose considerably alters the skin. We’re giving you the full rundown on the types of products available with helpful insights on how to use them.

Mousses

Image via CocoandEve.com

Mousses with a bronzing effect are great for beginner tanners, so you can see where exactly you’re applying the product on your body. This pick from Coco & Eve is the best way to start because of its tint. Plus, it feels like you're coating yourself in a beachy-sweet, summery mango and guava scent – score.

After applying tanning mousse with a tanning mitt and following the necessary steps, follow the label directions on your product for drying and rinsing. Some formulas can be left on overnight, while rapid solutions call for a full-body rinse after just a few hours.

As long as you’re prioritizing exfoliation and moisture after tanning, you should have a smooth experience.

Lotions

Image via LuxUnfiltered.com

Tanning lotions are fairly straightforward to use, just like mousses are. Take note of the concentration of dihydroxyacetone (DHA) in your tanning product – this is the ingredient that actually causes the tan to develop, and how dark it’ll turn out on your skin. Acronymic terms like that can sound alarming, but all-natural choices like this cream from Lux Unfiltered are kind to the skin. Apply tanning lotions in a cool, dry area to avoid sweaty streaks in your tan.

Tanning Drops

Image via Sephora.com

Tanning drops work by mixing them with the face and body lotions you already use. They’re often transparent, meaning they don’t have a visible bronzing effect until it develops on your skin.

With drops, it’s easy to customize your shade since you control the amount of product that goes right into your skincare routine. You can even infuse your foundation with these natural drops from Isle Of Paradise (jaw drops)! Use just a few drops to start to avoid a messy tan – once you perfect your tanning routine, experiment with more tanning drops.

Sprays

Image via COOLA.com

Utilize the same self-tanning prep with sprays as you would with mousses: exfoliate, shave, and moisturize a considerable amount of time beforehand, and you’ll be good to go.

Sprays require more thought behind actually finding the right space for application. Because spills and over-sprays happen, (and they can stain your floors and walls) make sure whatever location you choose is covered. Some old towels or sheets will work fabulously!

Sprays are good at reaching challenging areas of the body you want to tan. Applying them evenly can be equally challenging, so the best tip we have is to hold the spray can around 8 inches out from your skin. This organic, naturally-derived self-tanning mist from COOLA is fit for all skin types – even sensitive ones.

Gradual Self Tanners

Image via Target.com

A gradual self-tanner option is suitable for beginners still trying to find the right color. This way, you can take your tan day-by-day as the product builds upon itself and gets darker… gradually. These often come in the form of a lotion, like the beloved Jergen’s Natural Glow Body Lotion.

Self-Tanning Made Simple: Follow This Step-By-Step

  1. Exfoliate with a washcloth. Do this as early as 24 hours before your tanning sesh for best results. If you want to remove any body hair, do so at least 24 hours before as well, and moisturize after the fact.
  2. Dry your skin completely before applying self tanner.
  3. Apply the tanner, starting at your feet, working in sections. Blend the tanner from your wrists and ankles onto your hands and feet for a flawless finish. You can also add moisturizer to dilute the product going near your joints, since these areas will absorb more product than the rest of the skin.
  4. Let the self tanner dry longer than the instructions tell you to – it’s better to be safe than sorry!
  5. Wear loose-fitting clothing for the remainder of the day to avoid too much of the tanner rubbing off.

How to tell it's time to reapply?

It’s time to reapply your tanner when you notice splotches and fading from your previous tanning job. To start reapplication, prioritize exfoliating, shaving, waxing, and moisturizing around 24 hours before you begin.

Our best tips:

  • Remove any lingering self-tan product before applying a new layer. There are even special tan-removing products that can assist!
  • Aim to reapply your tanning product as evenly as possible, while being diligent to not lay it on thick around your joints.

How to Reach The Tricky Parts? Self-Tanning Your Hands, Feet, Face, and Back

  • Moisturize in specific areas such as the wrists, ankles, and any other tricky spots you may be worried about right after you apply tanner.
  • To bring the product onto your back while self-tanning, you’ll want to use a special back mitt. There are tons of options you can buy that make the hard-to-reach areas more accessible.
  • Keep baby wipes on-hand to clean up any mistakes. Starting from scratch just means taking up more of your time, and we want this process to be smooth. Wipes are also helpful for getting that pesky leftover tanner that’s accrued under your nails.

How to fix a patchy tan?

When you hit a sort of rough patch with your self-tan, try spot exfoliating the areas where there’s excess product. This will even things out so your tan looks professional! To fill in lighter patches, reach for a temporary self-tanner so you can create cohesive color.

Is self-tanning good for your skin?

Because self-tanner often substitutes for real rays, it means you may not be spending as much time in the sun exposing your skin to cancer-causing UV. Don’t you dare write off wearing sunscreen, though – your skin still needs protection under any circumstance. Slather on that sunscreen, or opt for a self tanner with SPF!

Not every self tanner is made equally. Some may use ingredients that irritate and dry out your skin. Remember when we mentioned DHA? DHA can be either synthetically manufactured, or derived naturally from fruit. Both methods are currently FDA-approved, but that doesn’t mean they’re free from damaging effects. Your skin will likely appreciate a product with natural DHAa lot more.

As far as I'm concerned, 2024 was Daisy Edgar-Jones' year. The Normal People actress captured our hearts with her role as Kate in Twisters (as well as her viral Hot Ones interview with Glen Powell and "Apple" TikTok dance). But while Kate led a pretty adventurous life, her risk threshold is nothing compared to Daisy's newest character, Muriel, in On Swift Horses.

Living in post-Korean War California, Muriel's life with her husband Lee is disrupted when Lee's brother Julius arrives in all his addictive, charming glory. The film, based on Shannon Pufahl's 2019 book of the same name, made its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 7. Here's everything you need to know.

What is On Swift Horses about?

Luc Montpelllier

On Swift Horses Plot

Muriel begins a new life with her husband Lee when he returns to California from the Korean War. But the life they're building together — and their future — changes forever when Lee's brother Julius, a headstrong gambler, arrives. Julius is attractive, charismatic, and hiding plenty of secrets.

According to the official synopsis, "when Julius takes off in search of the young card cheat he’s fallen for, Muriel’s longing for something more propels her into a secret life of her own, gambling on racehorses and exploring a love she never dreamed possible."

Luc Montpelllier

The story explores LGBTQ+ identity and desire in the 1950s, but does so with a hopeful tone rather than a devastating one. “The first scenes that we filmed were the scenes we had together, so we got all of that done with—when we were apart, we had put the groundwork in,” Daisy tells Vanity Fair of working with Jacob, who adds, "I believe Taylor Swift calls it an invisible string.”

"I loved the connection between gambling and risk-taking, and pushing the boundaries of her desire and what she’s looking for,” Daisy adds. “Muriel’s rebellion throughout the film is quite quiet, in the small ways in which she takes back her power by concealing things. A lot of what’s happening is behind closed doors.”

Who's in the cast of On Swift Horses?

On Swift Horses Cast

On Swift Horses stars Daisy Edgar-Jones, Jacob Elordi, Will Poulter, Sasha Calle, and Diego Calva.

"It's not hard to make chemistry with Jacob because he's just so charismatic," Daisy said during a Q&A, via People, adding that the script "felt almost like reading poetry and so much of what happens is in the subtext."

"This movie is just about love,” Calle added. “It’s important to just feel that — whoever that might be, where that takes you. It’s important to feel that and to feel safe in it.”

As charming as Julius appears in the teaser trailer, his brother Lee tells Muriel they live differently than he does. "He's just not like us," he says before a scene cuts to Muriel exploring her own "passions." Based on this, On Swift Horses appears to blur the lines of love, lust, secrets, and recognizing one's identity.

Everyone's favorite social satire series, The White Lotus, has returned for a new season on HBO. Set in Thailand, Season 3 is taking viewers on another dramatic (and sometimes uncomfortable) journey with a fresh group of affluent travelers.

Well, the cast does have two returning stars: Natasha Rothwell as Belinda Lindsey and Jon Gries as Greg. Then some of the newcomers include Leslie Bibb, Carrie Coon, Michelle Monaghan, Jason Isaacs, Parker Posey, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Sarah Catherine Hook, Sam Nivola, Walton Goggins, Lisa Manobal, and Charlotte Le Bon.

One more star, Aimee Lou Wood, has especially stood out to fans. She plays Chelsea and has delivered a captivating performance thus far as Rick's younger girlfriend. Aside from her intriguing portrayal, many viewers have also been fascinated by her unique look — more specifically, her teeth. Aimee, who is British, has confirmed that her teeth are real, and her unique smile is actually something that's affected her career in Hollywood.

Scroll to see what The White Lotus star, Aimee Lou Wood said about all THOSE teeth comments...

The actress, who's 30 years old, detailed how, when it came to theater auditions, she always felt confident. Yet, she'd be "shocked" to get a call back after auditioning for a TV role.

It wasn't until 2009, when Georgia May Jagger, who also has a distinct smile with a gap, became the face of Rimmel London, that Aimee felt more secure in her look.

"All of a sudden, it went from me being goofy to, 'Oh, you're a bit of a model, aren't you?' So I want to thank Georgia May Jagger for representing the buck teeth," she shared with Stylist back in 2020.

Aimee has maintained her British accent on The White Lotus, which makes sense, given the show's premise is about entitled world travelers who encounter dark circumstances or fates. Interestingly, though, she recently discussed her belief that she wouldn't be able to convincingly portray an American character due to her teeth.

"It's the teeth. Like, no Americans have my teeth. They just don't. I'd have to get veneers. Because... I think that genuinely is like one of the things," she revealed to On Demand Entertainment.

But while many celebs have already gone the veneer route, Aimee is proud that she hasn't. It makes her feel "a bit rebellious." Plus, ever since landing her latest role on the show, she's reportedly received "hundreds of messages" from fans who've appreciated seeing unique smiles like theirs on-screen.

"People going, 'Oh my god, you've got teeth like mine. Now I go to school, and people think I'm cool because I look like Aimee.' Instead of it being 'Bugs Bunny' or whatever," Aimee explained.

So, while she battled insecurities about her teeth during childhood, she's definitely become a representation icon for girls and women everywhere.

To see what happens to Aimee's character next, as well as the rest of the cast, you can catch new episodes of The White Lotus on Sundays at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and stream on Max.

After only two episodes of Only Murders in the Building season 4, Hulu renewed the series for season 5! I'm so excited that the show breaks a recent pattern of cancelling shows after the third or fourth season, giving us more time with our favorite characters, and I'm not the only one.

"Here we go again… my favorite set family. I’m coming home!" Selena Gomez says in an Instagram post, while the official Only Murders account made their own post, saying, "We had our lawyers call business affairs. Turned the 4 into a 5. #OnlyMurdersInTheBuilding is coming back for Season 5!!"

Here's everything you need to know about Only Murders in the Building season 5, coming to Hulu soon.

What is Only Murders in the Building season 5 about?

Patrick Harbron/Disney

Only Murders in the Building Season 5 Plot

We finally got our first details about Only Murders season 5 — and we're going in a direction I totally didn't expect. When Sofia visits Mabel and Charles in the season 4 ending, and asks them to find her missing husband, she's disappointed when they turn her down. And since Téa Leoni just joined the season 5 cast, it looks like she's not taking no for an answer.

“I think she’s the great tease at the end of the finale and a little bit of an intriguing bump forward,” co-creator John Hoffman says in an interview with Deadline. “She’s an extension of the little news report in Episode 9 that Mabel makes note of at the hospital. [Sofia] is the wife of the Dry Cleaning King of Brooklyn, and maybe a couple of dry cleaning outlets in Manhattan, as well, we may come to know...It’s a world opened up potentially that we haven’t talked about too much yet in New York, so she holds a lot of intrigue.”

Patrick Harbron/Hulu

New York's underground is a wild space that we haven't really seen on Only Murders yet so I know we're in for one very interesting season — because if this show is going to go there, they're going to go there.

Executive producer Dan Fogelman told The Wrapwe can look forward to “another big fun mystery the writers have been cooking up," while Hoffman has gone on the record saying the new episodes will “hit on some very current things going on within New York, specifically very relevant things that are happening in the city right now.”

When is Only Murders in the Building season 5 coming out?

Patrick Harbron/Hulu

Only Murders in the Building Season 5 Release Date

According to The Wrap, Only Murders is looking to begin production on season 5 in March of 2025. Considering we've had a new season over the last four years (with season 1 in 2021, season 2 in 2022, season 3 in 2023, and season 4 in 2024), we're expecting to see season 5 in 2025. Stay tuned for the official Only Murders in the Building season 5 release date.

Who's in Only Murders in the Building season 5?

Eric McCandless/Disney

Only Murders in the Building Season 5 Cast

The cast of Only Murders in the Building includes Selena Gomez, Martin Short, and Steve Martin. Téa Leoni will also return as Sofia Caccimelio, whose husband Nicky has gone missing.

According to Dan Fogelman, “we can expect more big guest stars that’ll probably be announced sooner rather than later,” he tells The Wrap.

Season 3 featured Ashley Park, Paul Rudd, Meryl Streep, and Jesse Williams, while season 4 stars Streep, Eugene Levy, Eva Longoria, Kumail Nanjiani, Desmin Borges, Siena Werber, Lilian Rebelo, and Molly Shannon.

"I am so grateful that I have been surrounded by human beings that make me better, challenge me, remind me day after day that every moment is a gift," Selena Gomez says about working with Martin and Short. "That’s my pure joy. I thank god for the era I’m in. It’s been the best yet."

Will there be an Only Murders in the Building season 5?

Patrick Harbron/Hulu

Yes, Only Murders in the Building has been renewed for season 5! On September 4, Variety confirmed the next installment will have 10 episodes, just like the seasons before it. The latest season premiered on Hulu August 27, and will last until October 29 (just in time to try out an Only Murders Halloween costume!)

Just like the season 3 ending set up season 4, we'll have to wait for the October finale to figure out what kind of mayhem Mabel, Oliver, and Charles will get into next season. "We hope you like it!" Selena Gomez says in the Only Murders in the Building account's announcement, while Martin Short adds, "How exciting is that?"

"We're so exciting to be coming back," Steve Martin says. We're excited too!!

Every year on March 17, people around the globe celebrate St. Patrick's Day with festive parades, lively music, and, obviously, plenty of green. But beyond the usual partying, this holiday is also steeped in traditions that are believed to bring good fortune.

Whether you want to attract prosperity, ward off bad energy, or simply embrace the spirit of the holiday, here are some St. Patrick's Day traditions that might just bring a little extra luck your way.

Scroll to see the all the lucky St. Patrick's Day traditions that manifest a little extra fortune!

1. Wearing Green (And Pinching Those Who Aren't)

RDNE Stock project

One of the easiest ways to cash in on the luck of St. Patrick's Day is by wearing green. This hue has deep ties to Ireland, which is often called the "Emerald Isle" due to its lush, rolling landscapes. Beyond its natural beauty, green also carries historical significance and symbolizes Irish nationalism and cultural pride.

The best part? There's a mischievous side to this fun and festive tradition. More specifically, those who forget to wear the color might find themselves on the receiving end of a pinch.

This playful custom is more common in the U.S. than in Ireland and stems from the idea that wearing green makes you invisible to leprechauns, who are known for their trickster ways. So, to avoid being "spotted" (or pinched), make sure you add a splash of green to your outfit.

2. Drowning A Shamrock In Whiskey

Jill Wellington

In Ireland, a well-known tradition is "drowning the shamrock," and it's believed to bring good luck. The shamrock has long been linked with Irish heritage and fortune. It's said to have been used by St. Patrick to explain the concept of the Holy Trinity.

So, on March 17, many celebrate by dropping a fresh shamrock into a glass of whiskey, drinking the beverage, and then tossing the shamrock over their left shoulder for good luck.

3. Doing An Irish Jig

Darlene Alderson

Get into the spirit of the holiday by learning an Irish jig! This energetic dance is a staple of Irish celebrations and is often performed in parades or festivals. It features quick footwork, pointed toes, and rhythmic hopping.

The Irish jig has deep roots in Celtic culture, possibly evolving from ancient clan marching tunes or early Celtic circle dances. Traditionally, Celts danced clockwise for joyous occasions and counterclockwise for mourning.

You can take a dance class, join in at a local event, or just work on some jig steps at home!

4. Searching For Four-Leaf Clovers

MH Shan

Hunting for a four-leaf clover is a classic St. Patty's Day pastime, and if you manage to find one, you should consider yourself super lucky.

While shamrocks typically have three leaves, the rare four-leaf clover is actually a genetic mutation, making it a real symbol of good fortune. In fact, experts estimate that only one in every 10,000 clovers has four leaves!

Test your luck this holiday by scanning a patch of clover quickly. Our brains are surprisingly good at spotting irregular patterns.

5. Release The "Devil" From Your Irish Soda Bread

Bijoux and Bits

Did you know that cutting a cross on top of Irish soda bread isn't just for aesthetics? According to Irish folklore, scoring a cross into the dough "lets the devil out" and ensures good luck and protection for your household.

This superstition, rooted in both Christian and pagan beliefs, was thought to ward off evil spirits. It also serves a practical purpose by allowing steam to escape, thus helping the bread bake evenly.

6. Run In A St. Patrick's Day Dash

Brett Sayles

Running a race might not be the first thing that comes to mind for March 17, but it's become a really fun tradition. St. Patrick's Day dashes can range from quick 5Ks to half marathons, with plenty of family-friendly walks for those who prefer a more leisurely pace.

Participants dress up in green, wear shamrocks, and sometimes even race while sporting leprechaun hats! It's a great way to stay active and possibly run your way into some good luck.

7. Chow Down On Corned Beef And Cabbage

Brit + Co

It's just not St. Patrick's Day without a plate of corned beef and cabbage. Even though many associated this dish with Ireland, it actually has Irish-American roots.

When Irish immigrants arrived in the U.S., they found corned beef to be a more affordable alternative to traditional bacon. Paired with cabbage, potatoes, and carrots, it became a comforting and flavorful meal that stuck as a holiday staple.

8. Kiss Someone Who Is Irish

RDNE Stock project

Finally, you've definitely seen the phrase "Kiss me, I'm Irish" on T-shirts before. This fun saying is tied to the tradition of kissing the Blarney Stone in Ireland, an act that's said to bring good luck.

However, not all of us have the ability to visit the Blarney Stone. So, kissing an Irish person is another way to honor the custom in the spirit of good fortune.

I already knew Freakier Friday would be even crazier than the first movie (because the only thing that would make me panic more than switching bodies with my mom is having it happen twice), but Anna (Lindsay Lohan) and Tess (Jamie Lee Curtis) are in for one wild ride in Freaky Friday 2. Because not only are they experiencing a switch, but Anna's daughter and soon-to-be daughter are caught up in it too. Freaky, indeed.

Here's the hilarious Freakier Friday trailer, starring Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis — and featuring Chappell Roan's "HOTTOGO"!

The 'Freakier Friday' trailer is seeing double.

In the Freakier Friday trailer, we see Anna and Tess get their palms read — and when the palm reader sees their life lines have intersected before, and starts teasing they could be in for another adventure, this mother-daughter duo IMMEDIATELY leaves...and then wakes up the next morning in other bodies.

But while the first Freaky Friday saw Anna and Tess switch bodies with one another, this time Anna finds herself trapped in her own daughter's (Julia Butters) body, while Tess and Anna's soon-to-be stepdaughter (Sophia Hammons) swap as well. Talk about complicated!

I was almost more excited to hear Chappell Roan's "HOTTOGO" than I was about anything else. A perfect song choice if you ask me!

And 'Freakier Friday' sees a lot of familiar faces return.

We also get to see Pink Slip reunite in the Freakier Friday trailer! Screenwriter Jordan Weiss teased the band's reunion in our interview for the 2024 rom-com Sweethearts, telling Brit + Co that "I may or may not have gotten to go to set and been around some pink slip energy."

"It may or may not have excited my inner child beyond belief because I was a super fan. I was 10 years old when the first movie came out," she continued. "So 20 years later to get to work on the sequel as part of that team was a dream and, you know, don't meet your heroes unless your heroes are Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis, In which case they're amazing. Meet your heroes."

We also see a glimpse of Manny Jancinto and Chad Michael Murray's Jake pull up for a "sexy grand entrance" on his motorcycle. We'll have to watch Freakier Friday when it hits theaters on August 8, 2025 to see how these ladies will work it out!

Are you excited for Freakier Friday? Let us know what you're most excited to see in the sequel on TikTok! And read up on how Chad Michael Murray's Freaky Friday Role Almost Went To Jared Padalecki.
