The Most Unexpected Aspect Of 'She Said' Is Also The Most Empowering

We're always drawn to stories that uplift and amplify women's voices, and along with films like Do Revengeand Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, She Said is one film from this year that will have you feeling empowered when you leave the theater — just maybe not in the way that you anticipate.

She Said, in theaters November 18 and based on the book by the same name, follows the story of how New York Times journalists Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor (portrayed by Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan, respectively) broke the story about decades-long sexual misconduct from former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein. In 2020, Weinstein was found guilty of first-degree criminal sexual act and third-degree rape, and was sentenced to 23 years in prison.

The story, which was published in 2017, changed Hollywood forever. Not only did it become a catalyst for Tarana Burke's #MeToo movement becoming a national movement, but it also won the two women a Pulitzer Prize for their public service.

The Real-Life Story Behind 'She Said'

Since so much of the investigation was off the record, the film lets us peek behind the curtain at the work that both Twohey and Kantor did during the process. Kantor said on The View that she wasn't even looking for information on Weinstein, but after the New York Times broke a story about Bill O'Reilly's sexual misconduct at Fox News, she was tasked with investigating whether the same thing was happening in other industries. She looked into Weinstein and immediately began to see a pattern.

"I was able to reach a few movie stars who told me very serious, painful stories. The women didn't know each other and yet their accounts were eerily similar," Kantor said. As Kantor and Twohey began digging deeper into the story together, and trying to speak with the women who were affected, they realized how complicated it would be.

"I also encountered a lot of lectures from condescending Hollywood executives who said to me, 'Sexual harassment is just part of this business," Kantor continued. "'It's part of how Hollywood is and that's the way it will always be.'"

How The Film's Unexpected Style Underscores Its Seriousness

Image used with permission, via Universal Pictures

As opposed to other sweeping, dramatic journalism films like Spotlight (which follows the Boston Globe journalists who wrote about sexual abuse in the Roman Catholic Church), She Said takes a toned-down approach to storytelling that allows the facts and sometimes-mundane aspects of the journalistic process to take center stage. There's nothing spectacular about the costumes, direction, or even the lighting, and the down-to-earth approach makes everything about the women and the work that they're doing feel more realistic.

That isn't to say the film has no drama — simple shots like the red hand at a crosswalk (handprints are often used by sexual assault survivors to show where they were touched) and scenes like when Kantor talks to her young daughter about sexual assault take our breath away because of their simplicity.

According to RAINN, 90 percent of survivors are women and over 463,000 women are assaulted each year, which makes the day-to-day of Twohey and Kantor's efforts hit home. "I think most women unfortunately have experienced some kind of sexual harassment in their lives or behavior that made them feel uncomfortable and they didn't even know why," Kazan said on The View. "I think it's a really relatable thing."

How The Film's Editing Emphasizes The Vastness Of #MeToo

While the conversations and experiences happen in such a natural way that you almost forget you're watching a movie, the relatability is also emphasized by the choppy editing style. During some scenes, you barely get to absorb a piece of information or storytelling before a cut takes you to another time or place. But its effect is much more profound than it is distracting — it emphasizes the sheer enormity of the problem, and the number of women affected.

The editing feels disjointed at times, which is an excellent reflection of the widespread impact of Weinstein's violence — and violence against women as a whole. There are so many women represented in the film, both stateside and in other parts of the world, that the jumps between them just serve as a reminder of how widespread this violence was. Over 87 women accused Weinstein of violence, according to USA Today.

Not only did the vast number of women depicted make an impact, but realizing how different they were from one another makes watching the film a more holistic and comprehensive experience. Each woman has to find a way to heal from her past and figure out how to carry on with her life.

Image used with permission, via Universal Pictures

The chaos contained in the film strengthens the fact that no one is alone in their struggles, and that women can only grow stronger when they come together. The fact that so many of the women wanted to stay anonymous, or had to because of NDAs, contrasts the film's title in a profound way.

She Said as a title and as a concept, emphasizes just how many "she saids" are in the New York Times article, and it also removes the "he said" from the common "he said, she said" cliche.

The film focuses the story on the voices of women who otherwise might not have the opportunity to be heard. Telling so many different stories at once allows you to see just how many people ended up being connected to one another, and that no matter who you are, there is still power in telling the truth. It's empowering to watch and empowering to experience.

"The film really is a tribute to female heroism, and it's something I don't really see onscreen very much," Carey Mulligan said on Today. "[The survivors] in the film are really the epitome of that."

"One thing that the movie has to say about [whether change can actually happen] is that collective action does matter," Kazan said on Today. "And if you don't feel yourself to have a powerful voice, that, in sisterhood, we can gain a lot of power."

Greta Gerwig's Narnia has generated some buzzy casting rumors over the last few months. Charli XCX, Daniel Craig, and even Joseph Quinn have all been a part of the rumor mill (but considering I've been waiting for news on this adaptation since it was acquired by Netflix in 2018, I'm not mad about all the chatter!). And the latest Narnia casting rumor has cause more conversation on the internet than anything else. Meryl Streep might be voicing Aslan.

Here's everything we know about the Aslan & Meryl Streep casting rumor in Greta Gerwig's Narnia movies.

Is Meryl Streep in the Narnia cast?

Meryl Streep is reportedly in talks to voice Aslan in Greta Gerwig's Narnia movies. The casting rumor first broke on March 31, leading some people to wonder if it was an early April Fool's Day joke, until Deadlineconfirmed the rumor on April 3. Fans of the book have called the choice everything from "interesting" to "cruel," and the conversation revolves around one particular question: are they making Aslan female?

A lot of Narnia fans were taken aback by the rumor about Meryl Streep because of the fact Aslan is an allegory for Jesus (referred to in the Bible as the Lion of Judah) — especially since Aslan's mane is such an integral part of the series, and lioness' typically don't have manes.

When the White Witch sacrifices Aslan on the Stone Table in The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, she shaves off his mane in an attempt to shame him and strip away his identity as King of Narnia. Lucy Pevensie hiding her face in his mane in Prince Caspian plays a huge role in bolstering her courage and faith, and the mane even comes into play during The Last Battle before (spoiler alert) Narnia gets destroyed.

'Narnia' fans have a lot of opinions about a female Aslan.

The most iconic visual of the Narnia series, arguably more than the wardrobe or the lamppost, is Aslan's mane. "If it’s true that Aslan has been changed to a female lion in the upcoming film, it’s deeply troubling that the filmmakers would make the choice to visually distance itself from The Chronicles of Narnia as it has always been known to its fans and the public imagination," one Narnia fan wrote on NarniaWeb. "It would be hard to look at a decision like that and not think that they were deliberately disassociating from the Narnia canon."

Another fan on NarniaWeb points out that having Meryl potentially voice a male Aslan "would be a fine way to convey the genderless nature of the soul. Aslan transcends all of that and was never bound by the idea of duality in the way that the ‘fallen’ believe they are."

@bereckerwentviral for his claim that fans who are upset about the casting simply "hate women" (yes, some of the backlash to Meryl's casting rumor has been atrocious). "I would like to officially say that if I die, I would be more than honored if Meryl Streep were to play me in my biopic, she’s the greatest to ever do it," he said in the comments.

"Meryl was hired based on merit. She’s the best," another Instagram user said in the comments.

However, Netflix hasn't confirmed Meryl Streep as Aslan.

Disney/Walden Media

Let the record show that, as of writing this story on April 7, Netflix hasn't actually confirmed anything about the movie outside Greta as director and Atonement cinematographer Seamus McGarvey as Director of Photography. Whether the film is a The Magician's Nephew adaptation, whether Daniel Craig is playing Uncle Andrew, and whether Meryl Streep is actually voicing Aslan are speculation at this point.

As one viral tweet puts it, "Increasingly convinced Greta either has no idea what she wants to do with this movie or has a vision so incredible nobody else can see it." Stay tuned for official casting announcements!

After only two episodes of Only Murders in the Building season 4, Hulu renewed the series for season 5! I'm so excited that the show breaks a recent pattern of cancelling shows after the third or fourth season, giving us more time with our favorite characters, and I'm not the only one.

"Here we go again… my favorite set family. I’m coming home!" Selena Gomez says in an Instagram post, while the official Only Murders account made their own post, saying, "We had our lawyers call business affairs. Turned the 4 into a 5. #OnlyMurdersInTheBuilding is coming back for Season 5!!"

In addition to the show entering production, the one and only Renée Zellweger (Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy) just joined the cast. Iconic!

Here's everything you need to know about Only Murders in the Building season 5, coming to Hulu soon.

Who's in the Only Murders in the Building season 5 cast?

Eric McCandless/Disney

The Only Murders in the Building season 5 cast features all our favorites, and some new faces! According to Dan Fogelman, “we can expect more big guest stars that’ll probably be announced sooner rather than later,” he tells The Wrap.

"I am so grateful that I have been surrounded by human beings that make me better, challenge me, remind me day after day that every moment is a gift," Selena Gomez says about working with Steve Martin and Martin Short. "That’s my pure joy. I thank god for the era I’m in. It’s been the best yet."

The Only Murders season 5 cast includes:

  • Selena Gomez as Mabel Mora: a true crime lover who begins her own podcast after getting sucked into a murder mystery.
  • Martin Short as Oliver Putnam: a theatre director and founder of the Only Murders in the Building podcast.
  • Steve Martin as Charles Hayden Savage: an actor and true crime lover who begins the Only Murders podcast with Oliver and Mabel.
  • Téa Leoni as Sofia Caccimelio: a woman who approaches the podcast trio after her husband Nicky goes missing.
  • Renée Zellweger
  • Christoph Waltz
  • Keegan-Michael Key

What is Only Murders in the Building season 5 about?

Patrick Harbron/Disney

We finally got our first details about Only Murders season 5 — and we're going in a direction I totally didn't expect. When Sofia visits Mabel and Charles in the season 4 ending, and asks them to find her missing husband, she's disappointed when they turn her down. And since Téa Leoni just joined the season 5 cast, it looks like she's not taking no for an answer.

“I think she’s the great tease at the end of the finale and a little bit of an intriguing bump forward,” co-creator John Hoffman says in an interview with Deadline. “She’s an extension of the little news report in Episode 9 that Mabel makes note of at the hospital. [Sofia] is the wife of the Dry Cleaning King of Brooklyn, and maybe a couple of dry cleaning outlets in Manhattan, as well, we may come to know...It’s a world opened up potentially that we haven’t talked about too much yet in New York, so she holds a lot of intrigue.”

Patrick Harbron/Hulu

New York's underground is a wild space that we haven't really seen on Only Murders yet so I know we're in for one very interesting season — because if this show is going to go there, they're going to go there.

Executive producer Dan Fogelman told The Wrapwe can look forward to “another big fun mystery the writers have been cooking up," while Hoffman has gone on the record saying the new episodes will “hit on some very current things going on within New York, specifically very relevant things that are happening in the city right now.”

When is Only Murders in the Building season 5 coming out?

Patrick Harbron/Hulu

There's no Only Murders in the Building season 5 release date quite yet, but the show is in production! Considering we've had a new season over the last four years (with season 1 in 2021, season 2 in 2022, season 3 in 2023, and season 4 in 2024), we're expecting to see season 5 in 2025. Stay tuned for the official Only Murders season 5 release date.

How many episodes are there in Only Murders in the Building season 5?

Patrick Harbron/Hulu

Only Murders in the Building season 5 will have 10 episodes total on Hulu.
