You'll Want To Eat These Blistered Shishito Peppers Right Out Of The Skillet

shishito peppers recipe

Gladys Soriano is the recipe developer, food stylist, and food photographer behind the Mediterranean-inspired blog Forks and Foliage. Here, she's sharing authentic Lebanese dishes and recipes inspired by her love for Mediterranean flavors (originally published on Forks and Foliage). Take it away, Gladys!

If you want to make an impressive appetizer with minimal effort, this blistered shishito peppers with burrata recipe is it! The smoky, sweet flavor of the shishito peppers and the creaminess of the burrata are leveled up even more with a delicious preserved lemon vinaigrette. Grab some toasted sourdough and make yourself a zesty bite of this appetizer!

Shishito peppers are small, wrinkly peppers native to Japan. They are mild and sweet in flavor when raw, but blister them and you'll have a delicious smoky flavor that makes them irresistible.

Although they are generally mild, they say one in ten of these small Japanese peppers will be hot. It's basically shishito roulette, you never know which one will get you!

Shishito peppers are a really great appetizer because one, they're bite sized; two, they have a cute, little stem that serves as a handle; and three, they're super easy to prepare. Of course, they're delicious too.

If you're entertaining, you'll want to check out this Lebanese mint lemonade recipe and this summery tomato confit recipe. The latter will go great with some crusty bread as the vehicle.

Blistered Shishito Pepper Ingredients

  • 12 ounces shishito peppers: Look for vibrant green and firm peppers without brown blemishes.
  • 8 ounces burrata: This is basically a fresh mozzarella ball filled with a mixture of cheese curds and fresh cream.
  • 2 tablespoons of preserved lemon paste: They'll make a delicious base for the vinaigrette.
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar: It adds another layer of flavor and brightness to the dressing.
  • 1 teaspoon honey: It balances out the dressing with a hint of sweetness.
  • 1/4 cup olive oil: We use it to coat the peppers before blistering them, and also for the oil component of the vinaigrette.

Blistered Shishito Peppers Recipe Instructions

1. First, preheat a large skillet over medium heat until it's very hot. If you sprinkle some water on the pan, it should sizzle and evaporate right away. Toss the shishito peppers with olive oil and salt then place them in the hot skillet in a single layer. Don't stir them around until they are charred and blistered on one side. This should take about 8 minutes total.

2. While they're cooking, make the dressing by mixing the preserved lemon paste, apple cider vinegar, honey, olive oil, salt, and pepper.

3. Toss the blistered shishito peppers with a portion of the dressing then place them on a platter. Break up the burrata into chunks and nestle them on top, and drizzle the dressing all over.

4. Drizzle some olive oil on slices of crusty bread such as sourdough, and toast them until golden and crispy.

5. Spread some burrata with the preserved lemon sauce on the bread, then top with a few blistered shishito peppers and dig in!

If you want, you can trim off the stems of the shishito peppers before you cook them. I personally like to keep them because I think it makes them more fun. But if you don't want to deal with having to bite the pepper off and discard the stem, feel free to chop them off in advance.

Substitutions and Variations

This recipe is vegetarian, but below are additional options:

  • Vegan - substitute the burrata with vegan ricotta or another plant-based creamy cheese of your choice.
  • Peppers - if you can't find shishito peppers, you can use sweet baby peppers. They will take a little longer to blister and soften since they are thicker and a little bigger.
  • Preserved lemons - you can buy them whole or in paste form. If you don't have any, substitute with half the amount of lemon zest and a big squeeze of lemon juice.
  • Honey - you can substitute this with maple syrup or another sweetener of your choice. You can completely omit it if you don't care for sweetness.
  • Apple cider vinegar - you can substitute it with another light vinegar you enjoy.
  • Gluten-free - this appetizer is naturally gluten-free, so just serve it with gluten-free bread or crackers.
  • Spicy - if you like more heat, add some cayenne pepper to the dressing.

Tips on How to Make Perfect Blistered Shishito Peppers

  • Get your pan screaming hot! If using a cast iron skillet, preheat it for at least 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Don't keep stirring the peppers. If you do that, you won't get the nice blisters and char but instead you'll have soft, cooked peppers without the smoky flavor.
  • Keep them in a single layer so they can get an even char on all sides.
  • Don't dump the salt in one spot over the peppers. Because they are so wrinkly, clumps of salt can get stuck and make some of the peppers too salty even if you toss them around. Learn from my mistake and sprinkle the salt evenly all over.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you need to remove the seeds from the shishito peppers?
No. Since these peppers are naturally mild, you don't need to worry about removing the seeds.

How hot are shishito peppers?

Most of the time they are mild, ranging from 50 to 200 Scoville heat units. That's much milder than jalapenos, ranging from 2,500 to 8,000 SHU. One in ten shishito peppers will be spicy. If you are sensitive to spicy food, bite off the tip of the pepper to check if it's a spicy one or not before you pop the whole thing in your mouth.

How do you eat shishito peppers?

Hold it by the stem, put the whole pepper in your mouth, and bite it off the stem. Yep, you eat the whole thing, seeds and all! Discard the stem.

What can I serve these shishito peppers with?

These are great with toasted bread or crackers as an appetizer, but they also make a great side dish for a grilled steak dinner or any other protein. You can even pile them over some tacos for a sweet and smoky flavor. Have fun with them!

Are there other ways to cook shishito peppers?

Yes. The best way to cook shishito peppers is on high heat until blistered. You can use the oven, air-fryer, or grill if you don't want to use the stovetop. If using the oven, set it to broil and place the seasoned shishito peppers in a single layer on a baking sheet on the top rack. Flip them once they char a bit, and let the other side blister too, about 8 minutes total. For air fried shishito peppers, set the air-fryer to 400°F and place the peppers in there for about 8 minutes, shaking them halfway through. For grilled peppers, set the grill to medium high heat and place the shishito peppers in a grill basket. Cook on the grill for about 8 minutes, tossing halfway through, until blistered.

How do you store shishito peppers?

Uncooked shishito peppers will keep in the fridge for a week or two in the crisper drawer. Cooked shishito peppers should be enjoyed immediately, as leftovers get soggy (though still edible).

How do I store the leftovers?

The burrata should be consumed immediately after removing it from it's liquid and breaking it open. But if it's not dressed with the vinaigrette, place it back in its liquid in an airtight container and in the fridge for a couple days. If it is already dressed and mixed with the peppers, place everything in an airtight container in the fridge and consume the next day.

Making matcha might seem like a fancy ritual, but it’s actually way easier than you think. All you need is the right items, techniques, and a little patience. Whether you prefer it hot and frothy or iced and refreshing, we've got the key to a smooth, vibrant cup of matcha. With just a few simple steps, you can bring a café-level matcha experience straight to your kitchen!

Scroll on to see how to make matcha – including our best tips and product recommendations.

1. Add your matcha powder.

Rocky's Matcha

Rocky's Matcha Oishi Ceremonial Blend Matcha

The perfect matcha latte undoubtedly starts with the right matcha powder. There are several different grades of matcha: ceremonial, premium, and culinary. Ceremonial grade matcha powder is typically more expensive, but it provides the best sweet, smooth, and umami-rich flavor.

Amazon

365 by Whole Foods Market Organic Matcha Powder

Premium grade matcha powder is slightly less sweet than ceremonial grade, but can be a great option if you consume matcha on the daily. It's also great for baking projects!

Jade Leaf

Jade Leaf Organic Culinary Matcha

Culinary grade matcha powder is widely known as the more budget-friendly option. It’s noticeably more bitter and you’ll notice that its color is less vibrant than ceremonial grade matcha powder.

To get started on your matcha, you'll want to sift 1-2 teaspoons of matcha powder into your matcha bowl. Sifting it through a fine mesh sieve ensures less clumps and better flavor.

2. Kettle

Great Jones

Great Jones x Fellow EKG Pro Kettle

To make matcha, you’ll need to heat up some water so that the powder mixes perfectly. The exact temperature of water is important there, though, so having a good kettle on-hand will make the process super easy.

Great Jones

We love this kettle from Great Jones x Fellow because it's aesthetically-pleasing, yet super functional. You can fine-tune the exact temperature using an easy dial, set timers, and pour with precision, thanks to the pour-over spout.

Printworks

Café Kitsuné x Printworks Matcha Tools

Some matcha purists insist on preheating their matcha bowls before adding any powder. You can do this by filling it with hot water and letting it sit for about a minute, discarding the water after.

To prep your matcha powder in the matcha bowl, you’ll want your water to be around 175°F – just below boiling. You don’t need too much of it. Pour just enough to cover the powder.

Next, mix the matcha and water together with your whisk for about 15-20 seconds, using a zig-zag motion until the matcha is fully dissolved and frothy.

3. Use a matcha bowl + whisk.

A reliable matcha bowl and whisk set is crucial for preparing matcha the right way. Using these traditional tools ensures that your matcha powder is evenly mixed and doesn't come out clumpy.

DAVIDsTEA

Plus, using a quality bamboo whisk gives your matcha that smooth, frothy texture you love and naturally aerates a bit of the bitterness out for a seamless sip.

4. Add your sweetener of choice.

Jordan's Skinny Mixes

Jordan's Skinny Mixes Sugar-Free Pistachio Syrup

After you’ve mixed your matcha is where the fun really kicks in. You can pair the matcha mixture with your favorite flavors, using syrups, purees, or natural sweeteners to jazz it up. Simply add your matcha to your desired amount of sweetener and gently mix to incorporate the flavors.

Other matcha lovers concoct their own syrups and purees, like strawberry, blueberry, and peach.

Using natural sweeteners like honey, agave, or maple syrup is also a stunning way to add some sweetness to your matcha latte!

5. Pour your milk.

Minor Figures Organic Barista Oat Milk

Matcha lattes are typically served with milk for added creaminess and to break some of the natural bitterness from the powder. Generally, anywhere from 1 to 1 1 ½ cups of milk is the perfect ratio.

Amazon

The HomeFlow Co.Handheld Milk Frother

You can easily sip your homemade matcha iced or hot. For a hot drink, you can use a milk steamer, or for the less fancy, microwave it for a few minutes in a mug and froth with a handheld electric whisk.

Trader Joe's Organic Unsweetened Almond Beverage

Our favorite milks for matcha lattes include Minor Figures' Organic Barista Oat Milk, Trader Joe's Organic Unsweetened Almond Beverage, and Forager Project’s Organic Cashew Milk. The 1923 season finale probably left you with a lot of emotions and a few questions thanks to its emotional end. Namely: Is there a season 3 of 1923 coming out? Here's everything we know about whether there will be a third installment of Taylor Sheridan's hit show. Plus, the other Yellowstone spinoffs you can look forward to!

Here's everything you need to know about whether 1923 season 3 is coming.

Is there a season 3 of 1923 coming out?

Paramount+ hasn't officially confirmed or denied that 1923 season 3 is coming, but it sounds like season 2 was the final installment.

“It’s bookend," Brandon Sklenar told The Hollywood Reporter in 2023. “It’s still limited, but I think of it as one piece — there’s just a split in the middle, but it’s all one piece. It will conclude.”

Taylor Sheridan also called 1923 a two-part narrative in an interview with Deadline. So it looks like the 1923 season finale is also a series finale!

Who's in the 1923 season 3 cast?

Emerson Miller/Paramount+

If there was a world in which we got a 1923 season 3, I'm sure we'd see the return of three of our favorites:

  • Harrison Ford as Jacob Dutton: owner and protector of the Yellowstone ranch.
  • Helen Mirren as Cara Dutton: Jacob's wife and partner.
  • Brandon Sklenar as Spencer Dutton: Jacob's nephew and John's father.

What happened to Alex and Spencer in 1923?

The end of 1923 saw Alex (Julia Schlaepfer) give birth to another Dutton baby (all but confirmed to be John Dutton II, the father of Kevin Costner's John Dutton III) before succumbing to the effects of hypothermia. She dies in Spencer's (Brandon Sklenar) arms, and he goes off with Jacob (played by Harrison Ford) to enact revenge on Donald Whitfield. The Duttons kill Whitfield (Timothy Dalton) and set his home on fire.

And as the narration from Isabel May's Elsa Dutton tells us, Spencer never married again. And 45 years later, he lies at her grave and seemingly passes away. The very end of 1923 reunites the couple in a dreamy, heavenly party where they can dance together forever.

Julia told USA Today how special is was for her that Alex got a spot in the Dutton graveyard, saying, "It's such an honor. I know that everyone will be so upset about being a part of the Dutton family cemetery."

What is the next series after 1923?

There are a few TV shows you can watch after 1923, but there are also some more Yellowstone spinoffs on their way!

  • The Madison follows a New York family who now live in central Montana's Madison River valley. The cast includes Michelle Pfeiffer, Patrick J. Adams, Elle Chapman, and Beau Garrett.
  • A spinoff about Yellowstone's Rip and Beth is in development.
  • 1944is also in development, and is sure to show off the Yellowstone ranch the tail end of World War II. We're sure to see the return of Spencer Dutton and John Dutton II, just played by different characters.

Um, Julia Schlaepfer Told Us Spencer & Alex Would "Barely" Reunite Before '1923' Season 2 Premiered

Bonus Recipe: Buffalo Chicken Wrap from Half Baked Harvest!

Half Baked Harvest

As a bonus, we're throwing in one of our favorite easy and healthy wrap recipes that pushed all the right buttons on flavor. You'll combine shredded chicken, buffalo sauce, herbs, lettuce, and a little cheddar cheese, fold them up in wraps, then pan-fry until warm and crispy!

These easy wraps, made by Half Baked Harvest, come together in mere minutes. They're crunchy on the outside, cheesy on the inside. Serve with the deliciously creamy jalapeño lime ranch and additional buffalo sauce! These healthy wraps are great for both lunch and dinner, but equally fun for a game night, too!

First things first: start with the buffalo chicken. Shred up a couple of chicken breasts and toss them with homemade buffalo sauce, Greek yogurt (for creaminess), and fresh herbs. Most buffalo chicken fillings are made with cream cheese, but you can swap in yogurt for a healthier choice.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup cooked shredded chicken
  • 1/4 cup plain greek yogurt
  • 1/3 cup buffalo sauce
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh chives
  • 1 tablespoon dried parsley
  • 1 teaspoon dried dill
  • 4 large (burrito size) whole wheat or gluten-free tortillas
  • 2 cups shredded romaine lettuce
  • 1-2 jalapeños or poblano peppers, chopped
  • 3 green onions, chopped
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup shredded pepper jack cheese
  • Olive oil, for cooking

Ingredients for jalapeño ranch:

  • 1 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 1/2 cup fresh cilantro, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 cup pickled jalapeños chopped + 2 tablespoons brine
  • Juice from 1 lime
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt

To assemble:

Make a cut down the center of your tortillas, then add the chicken to one corner, and the greens to another corner, and finally the cheese to another. Fold it all up, then pan-fry. So you've got...

  • One-quarter of buffalo chicken
  • Another quarter wrap of greens n' things
  • A quarter full of ranch
  • And finally a quarter full of cheese
  • Fold it all up into one triangle

Instructions:

  1. In a bowl, combine the chicken, yogurt, buffalo sauce, chives, parsley, and dill.
  2. To make the ranch. Combine all ingredients in a bowl.
  3. To assemble, cut down from the center of the tortilla to the edge. Spread the chicken in the bottom left corner, then add a handful of the lettuce, jalapeño/poblano pepper, and green onions on the top left corner. Spread the ranch on the top right corner, and the cheese on the bottom right corner. Fold the buffalo chicken over the lettuce. Then, working clock-wise, folding that quarter over the ranch. And finally, fold that quarter over the cheese.
  4. Heat a drizzle of olive oil in a skillet, add 1 wrap and cook 2-3 minutes per side until crisp and golden brown. Serve warm with extra buffalo sauce, ranch, and lettuce.

In less than 6 months, I experienced two devastating events that forced me to gauge my relationship with self care. Tough conversations with my inner circle made me aware that I needed to embrace my "soft girl era", but I didn't know where to start. On certain parts of TikTok, it looked like I needed to surround myself with new home decor or beauty buys, while other people implied it's about living a life that's free of stress.

To cut out the noise, I took a break from social media so I could ask myself what I need to thrive. This resulted in me making a temporary decision about my fertility journey, slowly axing out foods that disrupt my hormones, and choosing things that make me feel at peace in my mind, body, and soul.

Uncover 11 ways having a "soft girl era" can help transform your self-care!

1. It Can Help You Examine Your Relationship With Social Media & The News

Ketut Subiyanto/Pexels

Do you have a healthy relationship with social media and the news, or have you been doom scrolling? I'll be the first to say I've had to set strict limits for myself because it's been too easy to stay glued to gossip sites and what's happening in the world. While it's always great to be informed, there is a such thing as information overload that can affect us mentally and emotionally.

Make an effort to find activities to occupy your time sans scrolling endlessly on Instagram, TikTok, or other news platforms.

2. It Allows You To Be Honest With Yourself If You're An Overthinker

Andrea Piacquadio/Pexels

Have you been allowing overthinking to make you feel stressed? If so, you should try writing down or repeating a few phrases to help you calm down. They're such a big help if you have anxiety because they remind you that you can be present in the moment instead of existing solely in your head.

3. It Opens You Up To Asking For Help

Ron Lach/Pexels

This should be in all caps, but I don't want you to think I'm yelling at you. It's just, I know what it's like to be hyper-independent while embodying the traits of a "strong woman." But, there's some things you can't #GirlBoss or #LuckyGirlSyndrome your way out, and it can be devastating if you don't like asking for help maneuvering a tough event.

I'm still processing an emergency situation I was in after what was supposed to be a routine doctor's visit, so I've been out of my element whenever I lean on my family and friends for emotional support. I usually like to deal with sad or scary situations by myself, but not all things are meant to be shouldered by ourselves.

What I can tell you is that asking for help and receiving it makes life a little more peaceful because there's no extra burden of hurting while trying to portray a role society claims it loves.

4. You'll Become Comfortable Journaling Your Thoughts

I sound like a broken record, but I feel strongly about journaling your thoughts. It's a way of processing things that have happened and how you feel about them. Also, it can be a place where you create lists of goals, books you want to read, hobbies you want to try, and more!

5. You'll Give Yourself Permission To Rest

Cora Pursley/Dupe

If you can, push the pause button on being available to everyone for a couple of days. Even if you're an extrovert, it never hurts to occasionally stay in bed and do nothing. Take it from someone who has a hard time resting: you're not "lazy" if you're not always going somewhere or talking to someone.

It's completely fine to reset your mind, body, and soul.

6. You'll Begin To Do Nice Things For Yourself

Abigal Westlin/Dupe

Buying myself flowers is one of my favorite things to do in my soft girl era. Instead of waiting for a man to surprise me with a bouquet outside of Valentine's Day, I regularly adorn my home with tulips or sunflowers. They bring a touch of beauty and greenery to my space which helps on WFH days that feel challenging.

7. It's A Great Way To Rediscover Your Love Of Reading

Daniela Lara/Dupe

Can you think of the one book that makes you laugh, smile, and cry tears of joy? If so, that's the book you'll want to keep near your nightstand. It'll help you break up with your dependence on screen time while also giving you a chance to let your imagination fly. The added bonus is that you'll fall back in love with reading!

8. You'll Genuinely Find Ways To Nourish Your Body.

Payton Butler/Dupe

Being a soft girl isn't just about looking good or reaching for fun things, it's also about nourishing your body with healthy meals. Sometimes we eat and drink things that our digestive system doesn't like, so I'm recommending that you make small changes to your meals.

You can create your own Mediterranean bowl à la Cava or aim to eat more fruits and veggies during the week. Whatever you choose, just remember to start small!

9. You May Even Adopt A Sober Lifestyle

Sivan Weitz/Dupe

Whether you know it or not, there's great joy in grabbing a non-alcoholic beverage with your bestie in the city. You can catch up about life, share your dreams or whatever's troubling you, and sip the greenest beverage that beats the idea of eating green eggs and ham. That's right — I'm talking about matcha.

Is it the pretty green hue we can't stop staring at or does it really taste that good? Let's compromise and say it's both!

10. Solo Activities Won't Feel Daunting

Thyra Morton/Dupe

You don't have to be the next Frida Kahlo to enjoy a paint class! I personally like to engage in coloring or painting because it helps me find something else to focus on. Though it seems simple, the art of having a fun hobby you're not trying to perfect or gain profit from sparks your inner kid's joy.

11. The Beach Will Actually Feel Relaxing For Once

Sash Gabriel/Dupe

You deserve a mini vacation that includes putting beach towel down on hot sand near the ocean so you can read your newest TBR pick. It's soothing feeling the sun on your skin while a gentle breeze blows which is why I recommend everyone try to experience it a few times per month.
