Simone Biles on Returning to Olympics Training and Her Favorite Show to Binge-Watch

After capturing the heart of the nation at the 2016 Rio Olympics as a part of the gold-winning Final Five gymnastics team, Simone Biles took a well-deserved year-long hiatus from training. Even though she wasn’t grinding away in the gym every day, Biles kept herself very busy this past year — not only did the superstar athlete spend some much-needed time catching up with friends and family, but she also waltzed her way to fourth place on Dancing With the Stars, shot an inspiring Sports Illustrated spread with fellow Olympian Aly Raisman, and released a best-selling memoir titled Courage to Soar.

But after almost a year away, Biles is more than ready to head back to the gym for full-time gymnastics training. We recently got the opportunity to catch up with Biles and chat about her new Olympics training program, her goals for the upcoming year, and everything she’s loving right now (including her recent obsession with Riverdale).

Brit + Co: First of all, we’re so excited to hear that you’re returning to Olympics training in November! How are you feeling about getting back into the gym for full-time training?

Simone Biles: I’m really excited because I’ve been all over the place this past year, so it’ll be nice to go back to normal — or what feels normal to me — again, which is training.

B+C: After training with your coach Aimee Boorman for almost your entire career, it must be an interesting transition working with a new coach this fall. How are you finding the change?

SB: I’m excited about the change and the chance to work with Laurent Landi. Laurent specializes in bar work, and out of all my events, bar is a little weaker than the rest of them. Hopefully working with him will make me a little bit better at bar and boost my confidence while performing my bar routine.

B+C: We’ve heard that you’re hesitant about calling this a comeback. Why?

SB: I feel like once it’s viewed as a comeback… which everyone’s already done… they are setting expectations for me before I get to set them for myself. I don’t feel like that’s fair for them to do.

B+C: Young girls and athletes around the country were incredibly inspired by the Final Five during the 2016 Rio Olympics. What’s it like having a nation of young women look up to you?

SB: It’s an honor to have all these young kids look up to us. A long time ago we were in their same shoes, so I think it’s super exciting, especially when we get to meet the kids. It’s also important for them to hear our stories about where we came from and our backgrounds to see that if we can do it, they can do it one day too, with enough hard work and dedication.

B+C: You’ve recently partnered with Target and Always to help donate one million dollars to Girls on the Run, a national non-profit organization dedicated to help puberty-age girls realize their limitless potential. Can you tell us a little more about the partnership and what inspired you to want to work with Girls on the Run?

SB: What inspired me to partner with Girls on the Run is that it’s all about empowering kids. I love working with kids, and this program is great because it’s really about confidence-building, which is very important for everyone. I was on a team when I was younger, and I remember how that impacted my confidence, so I personally know that it does help to work with a team to build leadership skills and confidence. I am amazed and appreciative that Always and Target are doing so much to help.

B+C: Back in grade school, kids in your class used to call you swoldger (a cross between swollen and soldier). How has your own upbringing helped you want to inspire other girls to value being strong?

SB: I feel like in this day and age strong is the new beautiful, and you see more girls wanting to be involved in sports, wanting to have muscles and looking up to those kinds of role models. I think that’s pretty exciting for this generation, but when I was growing up it was a little bit different. Not a lot of kids did gymnastics, so when they saw my muscles they thought it was a little odd. I’d feel weird at school, but once I was at the gym, all the girls looked like me. We wouldn’t be able to do the things we do if we didn’t have our muscles.

B+C: What’s one tidbit of advice you wish you could give every young girl who is growing up in America today?

SB: Don’t let anybody tell you that you can’t do something. I think that’s probably the biggest tidbit of advice I give, because it does hold a lot of kids back, especially the ones who want to be athletes or whatever else they want to be — it’s okay to be the odd one out.

Brandon Sklenar has some pretty epic love stories under his belt. 1923's Alex and Spencer and It Ends With Us' Lily and Atlas are two iconic couples in pop culture right now, and I'm adding Violet and Henry from Drop (premiering in theaters April 11) to the list. What starts out as a fun first date turns terrifying when anonymous drops to her phone demand Violet kill Henry before the date's over. Whoa. That's intense.

But despite the fact this is probably the worst first date in recent cinema, Brandon Sklenar and White Lotus star Meghann Fahy's chemistry is so electric that I'll be referring to the movie as a scary rom-com from here on out. Naturally, I have to ask Brandon if he'd ever do a classic rom-com!

Here's what 1923's Brandon Sklenar had to say about starring in a rom-com in Brit + Co's Drop interview. Plus, Meghann Fahy's best dating advice!

Is Brandon Sklenar in a rom-com?

"It's possible. I'm not saying no, but it's possible," he teases. "I'd love to do a comedy at some point. Everything I have in the future is very far from, and very far from romance, but I'd say it's possible. Yeah, never say never."

As far as his dream comedy goes, Brandon tells Brit + Co, "I love Peter Sellers and I love like Chevy Chase movies. I'm like I'm a very physical guy and I'd love to be able to do something just absurd like grounded but completely absurd."

What have Meghann Fahy said about Brandon Sklenar?

The best ensemble comedies and rom-coms always have incredible casts, but I can't imagine a better duo than Brandon and Meghann. They make an incredible team in Drop, and Meghann admits if she found herself in the same situation as Violet, she wouldn't hesitate to tap Brandon in to help her.

"If sh—t went down, he'd be a good guy to be with," she says. "I feel like you got some real survival skills."

"I could do a couple of things, but most of that I learned from my friends of mine who are even gnarlier than me," he says. "I take little credit. I mean, you learn everything from somewhere, right?"

"I mean, I'm pretty good with like hand to hand combat," he continues, before Meghann tells him he's good at intimidation and he quite literally goes, "Grr, scary face. Spooky."

What is a good first date conversation?

But, more often than not, a bad date won't have any danger...just awkwardness. "I think if you're on a bad date and you realize 'I'm probably not gonna end up with this person,' just try to enjoy yourself anyway and make it about just trying to connect with somebody," Brandon says. "Just just get to know somebody for the sake of getting to know someone."

When it comes to ice breaker questions and conversation starters, Meghann loves "a final meal [question] like last meal, appetizer, main, dessert, drinks, sides, the whole bit."

"What did you want to be when you were really little growing up?" Brandon adds. "Dream scenario." (Let the record show Brandon has admitted he loved Batman growing up, and he's a leading fancast for the DCU. I'm totally here for it).

Can't get enough of this duo? Here's What Brandon Sklenar Said About Potential It Starts With Us Movie, and the first look at Meghann Fahy's Sirens on Netflix!

What happened to Van in 'Yellowjackets'?

Showtime

In Yellowjackets season 3, episode 9, the living adult women cross paths with adult Melissa after thinking she was dead for years.

When the group finds out that Melissa faked her own suicide, came up with a new identity, and married the daughter of a woman they killed in the wilderness, needless to say they feel pretty suspicious of Melissa's motives. Things get especially dicey when everyone learns that Melissa sent Shauna a tape recording of one of their notorious wilderness feasts — some of the only actual evidence of their more heinous acts during their time stranded in the woods.

While Melissa's tied up (in her own home, I might add), she turns on the fireplace and keeps the flu closed. Tai and Shauna get CO2 poisoning while Van is outside, leaving Van to save them as quickly as possible. After rescuing her friends, Van unties Melissa to confront her, but can't bring herself to kill Melissa.

Much to everyone's surprise, Melissa doesn't take this mercy with kindness. She turns the knife on Van, stabbing and killing her. Much like Van's literal bleeding heart, I was broken after that.

1923 season 2 premieres on Paramount+ February 23, and Michelle Randolph (who plays Elizabeth Dutton in the cast) is "so excited" for you to watch the new episodes — and she's been keeping up with all your fan theories!

"There are some crazy ones. I feel like the biggest fan theory thing is the family tree," she tells Brit + Co exclusively. "I've seen many different family trees and so it's like, 'OK, which one's accurate?' I actually drew my own at one point."

Here's what Michelle Randolph had to say about 1923 season 2, and the Dutton family tree, in Brit + Co's exclusive 1923 interview.

Michelle Randolph teases '1923' season 2 finally gives us answers to the Dutton family tree.

By the end of season 2, Michelle Randolph says "we might be able to fill in some blanks" in the Dutton family tree, which is a very hot topic for internet users! "I had to make my own [family tree] because all of the ones I saw on the internet were like — every single one was different. I was like 'I'm confused.'"

The Dutton family is made up of incredible cast members like Brandon Sklenar, Harrison Ford, and Helen Mirren, and Michelle reveals that the cast are just as close as their characters.

"There's a giant group chat called Giddy Up, which started during cowboy camp of season one," she says. "A cute little name, and I think I mean we all were on location in Montana and all in the same hotel, and we would get dinners after [filming], so I think even though our characters are very different and in different story lines like we all really did bond, which was really helpful to have each other throughout the chaos of of shooting a show."

The actress also says Elizabeth would connect with her 'Landman' character Ainsley.

And if you're a tried and true Taylor Sheridan fan, you've probably picked up on the fact that Michelle isn't just in 1923 — she also has a starring role as Ainsley Norris in Landman! But would Elizabeth and Ainsley get along if they met in an alternate universe?

"That would be a fun thing to witness. I think they would," she says. "They're very different, but the similarities between them is they're both young women who are finding their place in this world and I think that they both actually look at the world through very bright eyes and have a lot of hope, which is an interesting correlation between the two of them. I think Elizabeth has gone through so much more than Ainsley obviously, so there might be a difference there, but I think they would get along."

The best TV shows don't only entertain and inspire — they also make us reexamine the world we live in. And nobody is doing it like Black Mirror. Inspired in part by The Twilight Zone, this freaky Netflix show dives into a darker side of contemporary society, focusing on the doubts and hesitations we can all have when it comes to technology. Each episode of the gripping thriller is basically its own short movie, and the drama will have you on the edge of your seat the entire time because it's dealing with something we all use, and that familiarity makes it even spookier.

After Black Mirror season 6 (starring Annie Murphy, Myha'la Herrold, and Zazie Beetz) premiered in June of 2023, it became the most-watched streaming TV program in the US, and its popularity isn't slowing down anytime soon — especially with how stacked Netflix's Black Mirror season 7 cast is.

Here's everything you need to know about Black Mirror season 7, streaming on Netflix now.

Who's in Netflix's Black Mirror season 7 cast?

Netflix

The Black Mirror season 7 is one of its best yet. The lineup includes:

  • Awkwafina
  • Milanka Brooks
  • Peter Capaldi
  • Emma Corrin
  • Patsy Ferran
  • Paul Giamatti
  • Lewis Gribben
  • Osy Ikhile
  • Rashida Jones
  • Siena Kelly
  • Billy Magnussen
  • Rosy McEwen
  • Cristin Milioti
  • Chris O’Dowd
  • Issa Rae
  • Paul G. Raymond
  • Tracee Ellis Ross
  • Jimmi Simpson
  • Harriet Walter

Is there a 7th season of Black Mirror?

Netflix

Yes, Black Mirror season 7 is on Netflix now! And arguably the most-anticipated episode serves as a sequel to season 4's "USS Callister" starring Jesse Plemons, Cristin Milioti, Jimmi Simpson, Michaela Coel, and Billy Magnussen.

The season 7 announcement came with a cryptic message on X. While the tweet itself simply reads "TCKR_Confidential_NotForDistribution.mp4," the video shows an 80s desktop computer rebooting — and for a brief moment you can see "Exit Game" flash across the screen, which makes me wonder if we're reaching the end of this hit series.

When in 2025 is Black Mirror coming out?

Parisa Tag/Netflix

The Black Mirror season 7 release date was April 10, 2025. That means you can watch all episodes now!

How many episodes are in season 7 of Black Mirror?

Netflix

There are six episodes in Black Mirror season 7:

  • Season 7, Episode 1, "Common People" premiered on April 10, 2025
  • Season 7, Episode 2, "Bête Noir" premiered on April 10, 2025
  • Season 7, Episode 3, "Hotel Reverie" premiered on April 10, 2025
  • Season 7, Episode 4, "Plaything" premiered on April 10, 2025
  • Season 7, Episode 5, "Eulogy" premiered on April 10, 2025
  • Season 7, Episode 6, "USS Callister: Into Infinity" premiered on April 10, 2025

Why is a Black Mirror called a Black Mirror?

Netflix

A Black Mirror refers to all of our screens when they're dark. Cell phones, laptops, televisions — they're all Black Mirrors. This makes the series even harder to shake once you've turned it off because you realize that, while the story is fictional, these Black Mirrors are actually around us, and with us, all the time. And ever since Black Mirror season 1, we've never looked at our screens the same way!
