How to Reject Single Shaming and Embrace Your Solo Life

single womansingle woman

I recently bumped into my mom's friend (we'll call her Pam) at the grocery store. I hadn't seen Pam in years and we had a great conversation catching up. Days later, Pam called my mom and said, "Let me get this straight. Bridget is 38, has a great job, and tons of friends. Why is she still single? Doesn't she want kids?"

I was insulted. During our conversation, I had beamed with pride when I told Pam I'd been doing stand-up comedy and that I'm currently writing a book. Didn't she hear that? Even though I was offended, I would be lying if I never asked the same questions about another woman. I've been Pam—numerous times.

It's not my or Pam's fault that we immediately question why a woman is still single. It's ingrained in American society that a person isn't complete unless they have a significant other. Growing up, mainstream media, movies, and TV shows made one thing clear: Being partnered off is always the end goal.

Up until a few years ago, I thought it was my goal. Despite my own parents' divorce, I believed that getting married was the only way to live life, and that kids were the cherry on top.

Yet, after ending a serious relationship at age 34, instead of going for a revenge body or swiping right to find a replacement boyfriend, I did something completely out of the box for me: I signed up for a comedic writing class. Not only did I uncover my desire to write and perform comedy, but I discovered something I had never thought possible—I was happy being single!

What is Single Shaming?

In order to understand single shaming, we must understand shame. I spoke to Kelley Kitley, L.C.S.W., a Chicago-based women's mental health expert, who explained that shame is feeling embarrassed by something you did or didn't do, and knowing that other people are aware of it... which in turn, makes you feel less than or defective.

"Single shaming definitely comes from society and is extremely relatable. There's an expectation of adults to hit certain milestones in their life and one of those is to get married. Therefore, if someone is not married by a certain age, not only do others tend to think there is something wrong with that person, but that person ends up spending so much energy and focus on dating and chasing marriage, that they lose out on all these other things that would bring them joy," said Kitley.

I got so caught up in finding a husband that I dated several men I didn't have anything in common with or even really like. I would put up with poor behavior and would ignore red flags just to keep up with society's timeline. In the end, as much as it would be nice to have a plus one at a wedding, I'm much happier being on my own than with the wrong person—even if that puzzles Pam.

How to Move Past Single Shaming

Kitley and I spoke about how to get over single shaming and start living your life on your own terms. Here are five ways to do it:

Change Your Perception

Stop focusing on what you don't have and start focusing on what you do have. Take five minutes and write down five things you like about your life. Is it your job? Your friends? Your neighborhood? Now write down five things you like about yourself. Is it your hair? Your ability to make friends quickly? Your cooking skills? Are you smiling yet? Focus on the qualities you like about yourself. A partner should just be a bonus. It's like ordering your favorite pizza and the restaurant screws up and delivers two. Score! The extra pizza is great, but you would have been happy with just one.

Stop Comparing

Stop comparing yourself to your friends, siblings, coworkers, your neighbors—everyone. And DEFINITELY stop comparing your life to what your parents were doing at your age. Not only does this breed jealousy, it makes you feel less than. Besides, society has changed in major ways since our parents were young. People are getting married later (if at all) and women are much more able to have fulfilling careers. It's like comparing apples to oranges.

Embrace It

When you're single, you can do pretty much whatever you want, which is amazing. Poll your friends with partners and/or kids and ask them the last time they made a decision without having to take someone else into consideration. When you're single, you can watch whatever TV show you want, choose the takeout order, eat the last cookie. You can take two naps on a Saturday, spend too much money on a pair of shoes, and book a trip to Rome. Someday, you might have a partner and kids and these decisions might be looked at as a luxury.

Try Something New

After the break-up I mentioned earlier, I was in a rut. My life felt stale. I would go to work, come home, watch TV, and scroll social media. Most of my friends were married by then, the bar scene was getting old, and I was bored. The writing class I took changed my life immensely. Clearly not everyone is interested in writing, but find something that might pique your interest and go for it.

Allow Yourself to Feel How You Feel

Maybe you've been on all the apps and you can't figure out why you're not meeting the right person. If you're frustrated, feel frustrated. If you're sad, feel sad. If you're angry, feel angry. Like everything in life, moderation is key and swiping fatigue is real. Taking a break from the apps, dating, and the energy poured into thinking about relationships will help to reset your goals and what you value in life.

None of this is to say wanting a relationship, marriage, or kids is wrong... it's most certainly not. I adore great love stories and rom-coms. It's just that when I stopped focusing on finding a romantic relationship, I found myself. There will always be a Pam shaming you, so why do it yourself?

Andrew Garfield's relationship status is always a swoon-worthy topic. Whether he's gushing about how Emma Stone is like a shot of caffeine, he's getting flustered talking to Chicken Shop Date's Amelia Dimoldenberg, or he's kissing Demi Moore on the hand, this man is always making me blush. But it looks like he might not be single anymore if some recent outings with Monica Barbaro are any indication — including a post-Oscars party!

While neither Andrew nor Monica have spoken on the relationship rumors, a People source confirmed "they've been really lowkey and have been spending time together quietly"...and Monica shared a pretty funny moment with Amelia on the Oscars red carpet.

Here's what we know about those Andrew Garfield & Monica Barbaro relationship rumors.

March 16, 2025 — Andrew Garfield & Monica Barbaro are seen grocery shopping.

This duo definitely fanned the flames of those couple rumors when they were spotted grocery shopping in Malibu. A very realistic, domestic, and relatable Sunday! I also went grocery shopping this day, so it looks like we were on the same page ;).

Andrew wore a white tee and jeans while Monica looks cozy in a white tank and green cardigan. Both wore baseball caps. "I like that they are humble and buy the same TP as me," one Instagram user commented. Same.

March 2, 2025 — Andrew Garfield & Monica Barbaro attend an Oscar afterparty together.

After the Oscars on March 2, Monica Barbaro and Andrew Garfield left the Vanity Fair after party together...and showed up to Beyoncé and Jay-Z's after party. No big deal! Monica wore a strapless gown with gorgeous teardrop jewel detail while Andrew looks dapper in a deep gray suit.

They also happened to arrive at the Oscars red carpet at the same time...and Monica was sitting in Andrew's eye line the whole night. What a coincidence!

February 2025 — Monica Barbaro & Andrew Garfield attend Jonathan Bailey's play.

The two went viral on February 20 when they showed up to Jonathan Bailey's Richard II at the Bridge Theatre, and I'm obsessed with how locked in he is on their conversation. This man is an attentive listener if I've ever seen one!

January 2025 — Andrew Garfield & Monica Barbaro are photographed together.

Andrew and Monica were first seen together at W magazine's Best Performances party, alongside Eddie Redmayne and W's editor-at-large Lynn Hirschberg, in LA. They were already getting cozy!

What do you think about Andrew Garfield & Monica Barbaro? I'm personally obsessed. Stay tuned for the latest news on this low-key couple! I never thought I'd say this, but Meryl Streep and Martin Short are one of the cutest celebrity couples rumored to be together! I didn't see this coming and I'm certain neither did fans of Only Murders in the Building! It's like they're taking a page from Loretta Durkin and Oliver Putnam's scripts, but with the added spice of workplace romance. Even though they've yet to confirm what's going on between them, I think something's brewing and I'm not the only one!

Scroll to learn more about Meryl Streep & Martin Short's alleged romance!

When did Meryl Streep & Martin Short start dating?

The couple hasn't said anything about the beginning of their relationship, but rumors about them date back to January 2024. Despite being incredibly close at the 81st Golden Globes Awards, Martin's representative shut things down. It was said the two "are just very good friends, nothing more," but their coziness kept suggesting otherwise (via PEOPLE).

Page Six shared photos of them arriving to Giorgi Baldi late last year and they even attended a Broadway show together! Grabbing dinner is something friends would do, but lovers are also known for having date nights at restaurants.

Have they said anything about their relationship?

Meryl & Martin haven't verbally said much about their relationship, but apparently a source has intel about how they feel. "Meryl couldn’t help but fall for Martin. He is a gentleman, he keeps her laughing and is an all around positive person. She loves being around him," this anonymous person allegedly told Page Six.

Shortly after this admission, the source said the couple wasn't "looking for a relationship when they started dating," but loved ones "approve" of them being together. If you ask us, the best romances are ones that come as a surprise to both partners!

Who were they married to before?

Everyone was shocked to learn Meryl Streep and her ex-husband Don Gummer hadn't been together for "6 years," in 2023 (via PEOPLE). They would've bee celebrating 45 years of wedded bliss, but things ended well before they could do so. Meryl's rep said, "Don Gummer and Meryl Streep have been separated for more than 6 years, and while they will always care for each other, they have chosen lives apart."

As for Martin Short, he became a widower when his wife Nancy Dolman passed away in 2010 (via Newsweek). The outlet recalls a prior interview between the actor and The Hollywood Reporter where he said, "It was absolutely horrible, obviously, and as sad as anything." However he told his kids, "'I believe Mom has zoomed into our souls.'"

Though we're all about our reusable water bottles (and everything related to the Stanley tumbler), the love we have for fancy-shmancy bottled water is just undeniable. Despite the crisp, cold convenience associated with bottled drinking water, there's a *huge* rift in which brands actually taste good.

Some drinkers prefer Aquafina over Dasani (or even artesian water cuvée, like the cast of Vanderpump Rules), and that's okay – but sommelier Belinda Chang has an immeasurable wealth of knowledge to dictate which ones are worth sipping on based on their flavor (and yes, they differ).

Not every bottled water is created equal, and this expert-backed ranking is proof. Onward!

What type of bottled water is healthiest?

Pavel Danilyuk / PEXELS

Mineral water is considered the healthiest bottled drinking water since it contains additional minerals and vitamins.

What is the top-rated bottled water?

Towfiqu Barbhuiya / PEXELS

According to our ranking of the best and worst bottled waters, Roundy's bottled drinking water is #1.

Is bottled water safe to drink?

Mart Production / PEXELS

In terms of your health, all plastic bottled waters are the worst – they can contain hundreds of thousands of microplastics that harm the body. The safest bottled water you can drink is likely some filtered drinking water that you put into a reusable water bottle.

What are the top 5 worst bottled waters?

Karolina Grabowska / PEXELS

Propel, Dasani, Ice Mountain, Aquafina, and Naleczowianka are the top 5 worst bottled drinking waters, according to their taste.

What is the top 5 best drinking water?

Nerea Arance / PEXELS

According to expert water sommelier rankings, the top 5 best drinking waters are: Evian, Smeraldina, SmartWater, Fiji, and Roundy's.

Meet Sommelier Brenda Chang!

BelindaChang.com

Belinda Chang hails from Chicago, and was formerly the head of the wine and spirits program at upscale steakhouse Maple & Ash, so she knows her drinks. While she usually puts her skills towards perfect pairings of wine and sumptuous meals, Belinda welcomed Thrillist into her domain to put water to the ultimate test.

Belinda compared ten different bottled water brands by evaluating their flavor, aroma, texture and finish of each, giving them a score out of a possible 100 points. Her bottled water ratings shed light on which brands you should drink!

“A good bottled water shouldn’t have any off-putting aromas or flavors – that would be an automatic negative,” Belinda explained. “In wine, we always talk about terroir, and I think for water, it’s the same. You want it to speak of the place where it comes from. And, of course, you want it to be delicious.”

The Best Bottled Drinking Water, Ranked

10. Propel: 69/100

Propel

When it came to tasting Propel bottled water, Belinda was immediately put off by the odor, saying it smells "salty, metallic.” Ew. When it came to taste, it might not have been as bad, but it certainly wasn’t an A+.

“When it gets onto your tongue, the impact is bizarre. The texture and flavor is a lot like Gatorade, but not masked with orange or blue raspberry.”

9. Dasani: 70/100

Dasani

Dasani was another bottled drinking water that was... somewhat stinky. “See, this one does not smell good — it smells like a wine that’s been dosed with sulphates.” What’s with all the smelly water?

Belinda deemed that when it comes to Dasani, “The thirst-quenching quotient is really low on this guy.”

8. Ice Mountain: 81/100

Ice Mountain

Ice Mountain bottled drinking water got it right if you’re looking for nothing but water – tasteless water.

“It’s completely neutral in almost every way, which I think is a total positive.” In this case, definitely. Though Belinda did note a slight “mineral-y” aftertaste, a “pipe-like flavor.” No thanks.

7. Aquafina: 84/100

Aquafina

Instead of tasting pipe-like, Belinda felt Aquafina tasted “a little powdery, with some dissolved minerals and a little bit of salt.” Still, she felt that this was a decent thirst-quencher.

“For an inexpensive water that you’re just drinking because you’re in the airport and you want to hydrate before you go on a flight, I think this is a good option.”

6. Naleczowianka: 89/100

Naleczowianka

Naleczowianka bottled drinking water was another water with a “distinctive” smell — this time, a stony hint. Kinda strangely, it made Belinda think of “a salt character — I want it with a pierogi.” That’s… specific.

Overall, this one failed where it seems to matter the most, with the skilled sommelier noting, “It’s not that thirst-quenching. It dries out the palate.”

5. Evian: 90/100

Evian

Evian bottled drinking water is better when it comes to the smell, Belinda claiming it’s “really clean on the nose.” But interestingly, she also noted, “I do taste the Alps — I don’t smell them, but I taste them. And I can definitely imagine myself après-ski with a bottle of Evian.” That’s a plus for Evian!

4. Smeraldina: 92/100

Smeraldina

Smeraldina bottled drinking water scored slightly higher than Evian despite the fact that “after you have a sip of it, it feels like there’s this fine silt lying on your tongue.”

Besides that, however, “this would transport you back to the south of Italy.” Whoa. First the Alps, now Italy. We’re globetrotting with every sip.

3. Smartwater: 93/100

Smartwater

Smartwater is actually something that Belinda is familiar with herself, but admitted, “I’ve always chugged this the next morning when I’m hungover.” However, when she took some time to consider it, she claims, “it’s probably 1000% the marketing, but it does taste different,” i.e. a really interesting texture in the mid-palate, which Belinda assumes is the added electrolytes.

2. Fiji: 98/100

Fiji Water

Fiji took the runner-up spot of the best bottled water to drink, partly due to the fact that it’s “totally neutral on the nose, which [Belinda thinks] is important,” but it was also the fact that it’s a heavy water that got Belinda’s stamp of approval.

“[If] you want to drink a glass of water after a spectacular dish or, like, a great bite of a burger, you want something that cleanses, and this is it. I really love this water.”

1. Roundy's Purified Drinking Water: 99/100

Roundy's

And the bottled water winner is… Roundy’s!

First, the smell won Belinda over. “This is going to sound so weird, but it’s a little sweet-smelling — which I like!” But, of course, that wasn’t all. Taste is the major factor here, and the sommelier thought this option was delicious. “It has no pretension, it’s incredibly thirst-quenching."

"It doesn’t taste like anything, which is perfect. When you’re drinking water you just want to be drinking water, and this is the most watery of all the waters. This is the Moet Imperial of bottled water — it’s simple, it’s classic and it does exactly what it’s supposed to do. It delivers and that’s my professional opinion.”
