The Ultimate Guide To Glowy Skin

skincareskincare

Drinking water, exercising, and sleeping a good 7 to 9 hours are the basics to a healthy skincare routine. But after a dry, cold winter, your skin likely needs a glowy reboot with a wellness plan that focuses on the skin, inside and out. We’ve got you. We partnered with our friends at ChloroGlow, natural detox supplements derived from green plants, for ways to reset your skincare routine –along with Brit + Co’s tried-and-true hacks – so you can kick off the warm-weather season keeping dryness, dullness, and blemishes at bay.

what is Chlorophyll

Photo: ChloroGlow

Chlorophyll is more than a TikTok trend.

Chlorophyll, the pigment that gives green plants their color, contains nutrients that have been reported to clear skin blemishes and reduce inflammation; help with acne, rosacea, and wrinkles; and remove impurities and toxins below the skin. Natural sources of chlorophyll include leafy vegetables like spinach, kale, wheatgrass, and broccoli.

ChloroGlow Detox Drops, which contain a water-soluble version of chlorophyll (that absorbs better in the body), can take your glass of water or any meal up a notch. Potential benefits include antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, a morning energy boost, *and* natural healing from sun damage and signs of aging.

Food can hydrate your skin too.

Yes, what you eat can have an effect on your skin's glow. Go for fresh fruits and vegetables like watermelon or cucumbers that have a high water content. Your cells will be able to absorb them easily — and you'll get tons of vitamins and minerals that leave your skin beautiful from the inside out.

Eat antioxidant-rich foods too. Load up on kale, berries, and nuts (even dark chocolate!) over processed foods that are high in refined sugars.

Cleanse and moisturize, even when you don’t want to.

Sometimes you’re just too busy in the morning or too tired at night to deal with washing your face. We get it! But a consistent skincare regimen will help remove dirt, oil and pollution debris that can clog pores and create a dull appearance.

Wash your face morning and night (giving yourself a light massage in the process or try the gua sha method) and apply moisturizer every time to hydrate skin and instantly appear more glowy. Exfoliate twice a week to get even better results.

Exercise + green juice = one-two punch.

Getting your heart rate up can help give your skin much-needed oxygen and nutrients, which help boost collagen and develop new skin cells. The result? Skin that looks glowy, even after you sweat.

Before an intense workout, liquid chlorophyll can actually help calm and balance your body. Bonus: it can also increase energy and help you maintain a healthy weight.

ChloroGlow Detox Shots, which taste mild and sweet (there's a green apple version too), can be a great booster to your favorite green juice or you can drink on its own for a powerful start to your day.

Resist the urge to pop!

Popping your pimples can create permanent scars and even more breakouts. Instead, try these DIY remedies: Dissolve an aspirin or a pinch of baking soda in a little water and then apply the paste to the spot for no more than five minutes. Aspirin and baking soda contain the same acid that many acne treatments use to exfoliate dry skin and decrease redness.

Our favorite hack? Rub an ice cube all over the area for about two minutes before applying an acne cream or a DIY face mask.

DIY steam and mask weekly.

Put your face over a bowl of boiling water, using a towel to trap the heat, and let the steam moisturize your skin for one to two minutes. You can add citrus, green tea, or essential oils to ante up the relaxing experience. You’ll remove dirt, dust and oil from your pores without aggravating your skin.

For a smoother, clearer appearance, whip up a spa-worthy mask using strawberries and some Greek yogurt to help smooth bumps and unclog pores. A little honey can also help soothe sensitive skin, and reduces irritation. Smooth it on, kick back, and try not to eat it all up.

Apply sunscreen to more than just your face.

Make sure you are applying SPF to your ears, jawline, and hairline. These are areas where dermatologists often seen cases of skin cancer, since we can often ignore them when applying sunscreen. Caring for our whole skin is key to glowy results.

Admit it: you rolled your eyes when your friend talked about scoring tickets to see Beyoncé'sRenaissance tour or Taylor Swift's The Eras Tour. You've probably even looked at her sideways when she's shared she pays 50% of her household bills because you don't think modern women should do that.

Whatever your reasoning is, you're aware that you have a habit of judging how your friend spends money and feel like you should stop. But friends shouldn't lie to each other, right? Eh, we've yet to see lying in relationships produce healthy results, but overstepping boundaries is just as worse. This is especially true if your friend doesn't always ask for your financial opinions.

Want to know why you keep doing it even though you're making your friend uncomfortable? Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Navjot "Navi" Hughesof Empower Mental Health has a few hints so pull up a chair to see what gives!

4 reasons you're lowkey obsessed with how your friends spend money

Jayda Anderson

1. You're using money as a way to compare yourself to your friend.

Seeing it worded like this sounds harsh and is sure to illicit the following responses:

  1. "Are you kidding me? I'd never do that!"
  2. "There's no comparison between my friend and I. I love them too much to do that."
  3. "It's not like I'm hurting my friend when I try to give them advice."

Even if you're not proud of it, there's a reason why comparison feels a embedded. Hughes says you're zeroing in on your friend's finances because of your "mindset." She further explains, "...we compare because money either separates you or brings you together. It's a social comparison because it's one of the most powerful tools to create the life you desire." This checks out if you and your friend are always talking about the kind of futures you want.

Here's the clincher: Hughes says, "Some are motivated by others, and some become jealous and hopeless."

Tima Miroshnichenko

2. The childhood lessons you learned about money are on full display.

Did you grow up hearing "money doesn't grow on trees" or "Anyone who doesn't save their money is being wasteful?" You may not think about it, but plays a role in how you look at other people's habits. Hughes says, "...judgment comes from our social upbringing. Some people have a scarcity mindset, so they hoard all their money." This could explain why you're less likely to spend money on things you consider frivolous while thinking your friend who does has lost a grip on reality.

The other side of this is being in a position where you didn't have to worry about money growing up. "If you are from a wealthier family, you know that money is a tool that flows." But, you're not off the hook from having negative opinions about others. You could still "judge others for not being smart and investing their money," according to Hughes.

Shaunna Levy

3. You may be jealous of your friend or annoyed with their complaints.

You can adore your friend while envying them for having the luxury to do whatever they want with their money. It's not to say they're truly in the position be carefree, but their ability to believe they'll be okay no matter what may make you see green. Then again, you may resent your friend for complaining about financial hardships they're in because of bad choices.

Like Hughes has mentioned earlier, there's so many reasons why everyone judges each other. She reiterates, "Usually, it's a place of jealousy," and it can show up differently based on your friend's circumstances.

"If your friends travel and you can't afford it, it creates discontent," she uses as an example, but "if your friends complain about not having money and bad spending habits, you may be annoyed and frustrated because their habits don't align with their perceived values," she adds.

Kaboompics.com

4. You're unable to handle the same criticism you're dishing out.

It's easy to judge others for doing something we think isn't right, but it's harder to accept the same vein of criticism. Hughes says people who consistently critique their friends' spending habits wouldn't have a hard time paying attention to their own choices if they were genuinely seeking "expert guidance on how to manage money instead of avoiding it."

For example, you could feel envious of the friend who has a good relationship with money while you're always spending it as soon as you get paid. "Some people cannot hold on to cash because they don't feel they deserve it. It's the subconscious programming that prevents them from making changes," says Hughes.

Emma Ripperdan

Here's what to do if you're truly concerned about your friend's finances

Approach the topic delicately

Sometimes we love to pose aggressive interventions with our friends because we "know" them. While this may work in some cases, it could backfire if you're adding to the guilt they're already feeling.

"If they ask for feedback or they complain in a moment, you can get curious and ask questions that allow them to realize their mistakes," suggests Hughes. Don't go thinking this is your shining moment to make your friend change, however.

"Ultimately, it's up to that person to receive feedback. If they don't want the input, it's best not to express your opinion as it doesn't impact you..." Hughes remarks.

Pavel Danilyuk

Here's how to set a firm boundary with a friend who can't keep their opinions to themselves

If you've found yourself on the receiving of constant opinions about how you spend money, we know you're annoyed. We're irritated for you because invasive questions or thoughts about money can ruin a longstanding friendship!

You can say something like, "While I appreciate your concerns, I will figure this out". You must take control of the conversation and be assertive if others are crossing a boundary. This usually reflects a lack of boundaries in relationships beyond finances- so chances are your relationship already lacks boundaries.

When you come across a cute dog up for adoption, it's extremely easy to get swept up by their adorable face and want to take them home on the spot. However, not all dogs are as low-maintenance as they might seem at first glance.

Certain breeds tend to come with a hefty price tag in terms of both time and money. From things like grooming needs to medical care, some dogs can leave new owners seriously surprised by all the hidden costs.

So, before you add a new furry friend to your family, it's important to educate yourself. Here are 12 dog breeds that may break the bank because of their surprisingly high-maintenance needs.

Scroll to see some of the most high-maintenance dog breeds you could get right now.

1. Labradoodle

Lars Mulder

While plenty of people love the characteristic Labradoodle affection and energy, these teddy bear dogs still require a decent amount of upkeep.

First of all, their high energy demands frequent exercise and mental stimulation, which can be time-consuming. Plus, their coats can be unpredictable, given that they're a mix of Poodle and Labrador.

That's why some Labradoodles might need daily grooming to prevent tangles and mats, while others will require professional grooming sessions.

2. French Bulldog

Rebecca Fogg

French Bulldogs may have an adorable and compact appearance, but their cute looks come with significant health and maintenance requirements.

Due to their short necks, flat faces, and stocky bodies, they often face a range of health problems, particularly brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS), which affects their breathing.

This condition can result in expensive veterinary visits and pet insurance premiums. Aside from that, owners will need to clean their skin rolls regularly to avoid infections.

3. Siberian Husky

Julissa Helmuth

Siberian Huskies are extremely athletic, meaning a ton of exercise is necessary. They were bred to pull sleds for up to 100 miles every single day, so to remain happy and healthy, they require a significant amount of physical activity.

Additionally, they don't enjoy being left alone, meaning doggy daycare or a reliable pet sitter is often necessary. To top it off, their thick double coats shed year-round, and you may go through multiple vacuum cleaners just to keep your home clean.

4. Afghan Hound

Ron Lach

The Afghan Hound is a stunning breed, but its luxurious coat makes it super high-maintenance. To keep their fur in good shape, owners will have to brush daily and provide baths weekly, ensuring they carefully dry their pups with a blow dryer.

Regular oil treatments and meticulous wrapping are also needed, along with the use of snoods during mealtime to protect their hair.

5. Border Collie

Helena Lopes

Since Border Collies are so active and smart, they literally need boundless amounts of exercise and mental stimulation to keep them occupied.

These dogs excel when challenged, whether through obedience training or dog sports. If they're not kept on the move, Border Collies can become bored and a huge handful. They may act hyperactive, produce excessive noise, and get destructive.

6. Akita

Zen Chung

As working dogs, Akitas are independent, strong, and can be standoffish with strangers. Their aloof nature and protective instincts also mean they require consistent, firm training and plenty of socialization from a young age.

This breed is typically quiet, clean, and relatively easy to groom. Even so, they need substantial mental stimulation to remain well-behaved.

7. Giant Schnauzer

Brett Sayles

Even though Giant Schnauzers are affectionate, they also have a strong territorial nature, and firm training is essential from the start.

Regular grooming is a key part of their care as well, particularly around their faces. Their thick coats can become matted, and consistent brushing routines are important to maintain their well-being.

8. Tibetan Mastiff

Guang Niu/Getty Images

Tibetan Mastiffs are large dogs with strong-willed personalities that can make training a challenge. They tend to be calm and don't require a bunch of exercise, yet getting them to consistently listen to commands will take patience and persistence.

This breed is known for having an independent streak, and their territorial nature means they should always be kept on a leash during any outings.

9. Chow Chow

Sharmaine Monticalbo

Chow Chows are adorable, fluffy dogs that must be consistently groomed, and it's crucial that their grooming routine starts early. It should include regular baths, brushing, and blow drying to help them get accustomed to the process.

The thick fur around their faces can be particularly challenging to wash, but it's very important to keep the region clean to prevent matting, which can be painful.

10. Old English Sheepdog

Filip Kvasnak

Everyone loves Old English Sheepdogs because of their fluffy and friendly temperament. However, their coats call for a significant amount of upkeep.

Full-body brushing several times a week is needed to prevent matting. Or, for easier maintenance, their coat can be trimmed shorter on a regular basis.

Beyond grooming, these dogs are strong and athletic as well. Plenty of playtime and outdoor activity is key to keeping them healthy.

11. Australian Cattle Dog

Loli de Elia

Australian Cattle Dogs, also known as Blue Heelers, are tireless herding canines with a strong desire to run. They have a high prey drive and protective instincts, so they're best suited for owners with wide open spaces.

This breed needs to burn off its seemingly infinite energy and requires structure to stay well-behaved. Thankfully, though, their short coats are less maintenance-intensive.

12. Pekingese

Mert Ocak

Finally, Pekingese come with a hefty maintenance load due to their unique physical traits. They have short legs, flat noses, short necks, bulging eyes, and dense coats, which is why they tend to be expensive when it comes to both grooming and healthcare.

Owners should expect higher vet bills and pet insurance costs due to breed-specific health problems. Also, Pekingese are prone to overheating, so they'll need cool areas to rest during the warmer months and a tangle-free coat to allow proper airflow.

Even though I'm not single, I swear by solo dates because they give me two things I crave the most: peace and quiet. They've become a luxury because I don't always get to be alone as a bride-to-be and mom. Someone's always excited to talk to me or express their physical love language, and I really appreciate it. But, it can be hard to decompress when stress and burnout are clouding my head like pesky thought bubbles.

My solution to the chaos? Taking a trip to a small café or a park where it's just me, my thoughts, and possibly a good Reese Witherspoon book club pick. Sometimes I even book a spa appointment if I'm feeling fancy.

Jeremiah Brent has an amazing knack for making spaces feel luxe but also totally livable. His modern-vintage aesthetic creates really timeless, soulful spaces I love. One of my favorite reality shows, Queer Eye, is lucky to have him as their newest member and interior designer. I chatted with Jeremiah this week about all things design, reality TV, his life with partner Nate Berkus (plus a few lovely wedding design tips), and his pantry organization hacks.

Also, you can score a pantry makeover with Jeremiah, thanks to Almond Breeze. Find the sweepstakes details below!

Here's what Jeremiah Brent shared with us about decor, Queer Eye, and life with Nate Berkus in an exclusive interview!

Jeremiah Brent

Your aesthetic is known for being sophisticated yet warm. What’s your best piece of advice for someone looking to make their home feel more personal?

Jeremiah: Theresa, that's my life mission with design. It’s become super-prescriptive design. The most memorable rooms and homes I've ever been in had nothing to do with how much money they spent or if it was from Architectural Digest, it just looked like them.

My biggest piece of advice would be: Really think about the moments in your day that matter most to you. Are you an early morning person who needs coffee? Are you an evening person who wants to lie down and watch TV, or are you somebody who's very ceremonial?

Do you have a spot to read a book and have a glass of wine at night? If you start creating your space for your moments instead of for other people, it just changes the way you move through your own house.

Nate & Jeremiah by Design gave viewers a glimpse into your life with Nate and your family — what was it like working so closely with your partner on screen?

Jeremiah: He's my favorite person in the world. I mean, it's not easy to work with a spouse. It can really make or break you, but my husband has always believed in my talent and my perspective creatively and we have a lot of respect for each other. What it represented was us being able to show a family like ours to the world that maybe they didn't have access to, and it was really important and I'm really proud of it. It's also this beautiful timeline of the first 10 years of our lives as a family.

Netflix

Now you’re joining Queer Eye. What’s something about working on reality TV home makeovers that people might not realize?

Jeremiah: This is going to be a weird thing to say, but I don't think people realize how real Queer Eye is. I've worked on a lot of reality television, which is aging me tremendously. [laughs] Queer Eye is different. I mean, I sat there every week watching people walk into new versions of themselves. It's an interesting thing when you see somebody the way they want to be seen and then you watch them change the way they see themselves. I got to watch my dearest friends do what they do and it was just wild. You can't produce that kind of energy.

What's one of your favorite moments on the show?

Jeremiah: There was a woman named Jen'ya who is a single mother and I was raised by a single mother, and it was particularly impactful for me because it's everything you wish you could have done for your mother growing up. To be able to have that full circle moment and say, "I know exactly what you're going through" and every chance you just can't seem to get, that felt really good.

Netflix

Let’s talk weddings. What’s one design element from Say I Do that you’d love to see more couples incorporate into their own celebrations?

Jeremiah: The people that they love, which is a weird thing to say, but I think so much about weddings becomes about the conventional, like flowers and this and that. That personalized component makes it just this really beautiful, holistic, important thing. In our wedding we tried to incorporate the people that were really part of the fabric of our lives because we wouldn't have been there without them.

What are some ways that you and Nate incorporated your closest people?

Jeremiah: My mother's recipes for our desserts, certain flowers from my grandparents, certain smells. We incorporated photos in different areas. My sister sang at our wedding, which was super special. Tons of different little things, like little nods to people we love.

What’s one design trend that makes you cringe?

Jeremiah: Acrylic furniture because of fingerprints and dust. But I support people who have it, it’s just not for me.

Enter To Win A Pantry Makeover From Jeremiah!

  • Terms & Conditions: Must be 18 or older to enter. Must be U.S.-based, excluding Alaska and Hawaii.

Given this sweepstakes, what are your best organizational hacks for the pantry?

Jeremiah: I think the pantry becomes kind of a catch-all for everything. And the next thing you know, half of it's expired. It kind of becomes like a pit where things go to die. In our own house, I'm constantly editing, even if it's just changing where things are spatially in the pantry, moving them around a little bit forces you to go through things and reassess them. And lighting. Buy simple, really inexpensive LED strip lighting that you can attach to the top of your pantry inside and light. It makes a world of a difference.

Netflix

Why you decided to partner with Almond Breeze. Do you have a go-to recipe or favorite beverage?

Jeremiah: We're really aligned for a lot of different reasons. They are crafted obviously from the best Blue Diamond almonds. They're all about sustainability. The fact that it's this wholesome plant-based almondmilk. We use it in smoothies, cereals, Poppy [my daughter] just used it in her cereal this morning. You know, life is crazy and busy and I'm traveling all the time and I love that I don't have to worry in two weeks if I need to get rid of it because it’s shelf stable. It's just a matter of aligning with a company that their priorities are in the same place as mine, as a father and as a husband.

Do you like to cook?

Jeremiah: Love to cook. It's my favorite. I love the ceremony of it, preparing something and then people coming together and then watching them eat it. It's the best.

What's your go-to recipe that's not a beverage?

Jeremiah: I'll give you two. I make a weeknight bolognese, but I actually think the recipe is from Ina Garten because I'm obsessed with her. And then I do a jalapeño pomegranate glazed ham for the holidays, which sounds like a lot of flavor and very fancy, but it's really easy and it's so good.
