We Just Gave Out $25K In Small Business Grants To Women-Founded Startups

The Selfmade pitch competition is like nothing you've ever seen before! Every installment of our entrepreneurship program for female founders ends with a high-stakes, fast-paced battle of the wits. In it, we crown moguls in the making while they go head-to-head to win some serious cash prizes...and that's not even counting all the other bragging rights (like having built a business from scratch!).

If you're not familiar already, Selfmade is our immersive program that helps women take their businesses from idea to launch. Working side-by-side through lessons, coaching, workshops, mentor sessions, assignments, and more, this group of founders has put their whole selves into what we do here.

With over $25K in cash grants and prizes on the line thanks in part to our Selfmade partner Office Depot, our pitch competition gives our Selfmade squad the opportunity to show off all they've done and learned. And as you can imagine, this special showcase is always so inspiring.

Meet Our Small Business Grant Winners

Coming in first place was Bryant Liggett, Founder of The Fertility Resort, a safe space for women to connect with others on the same journey, receive the support they need via fertility coaching, have access to scientific and lifestyle resources to optimize their journey, and most importantly, to empower women to take control of their health with the tools to tackle the ups and downs of (in)fertility.

In second place was Angela Christian, Founder of Myco-Clear, the first-ever mycotoxin monitor and would continuously monitor the indoor air of one’s home, office, or school and alert the occupants of mycotoxins.

And in third place was Robin Oloyede, Founder of Colorfull Plates, a thoughtfully designed children’s dinnerware and lifestyle company with diverse characters that portray children seeing themselves doing things they imagine.

The small business runners up included:

Amy Li, Founder of Dance4Healing, a patent-pending AI telehealth platform that pairs elders, chronic disease patients, and caregivers with compatible buddies to build fun, lasting habits with Creative Arts Therapy (CAT: Music, Dance, Art) through pre-recorded and live video classes.
Angela Fraser, Founder of Berlyns, a business that takes the ease off of pet owners by providing fun, healthy treats for communities that are sustainable.
Catalina Tellez Hopkins, Founder of Catalina Straps and Bags, a social enterprise working with indigenous women of the Wayuu Tribe along the Caribbean Coast of Colombia to produce handmade straps for yoga, guitars, cameras, and handbags, made for people on the go who like to be unique, hands-free, and care about making a positive impact.
Christine Tong, Founder of Christine My Linh, illustrations and stories to guide creative women away from negative self-talk towards building their self-esteem and reminding them of their power.
Jessica Diggs, Founder of Centered, a membership-based community for doulas to help them cultivate a thriving business.
Lisa & Kristin Hurd, Founders of Lisa's 1973, a premium collection of refrigerated, organic, plant-based dressings & sauces filled with functional ingredients.

Viya Qu, Founder of unseem, a line of liberating skirts for everyone, especially for womxn to reclaim their freedom in skirts.

Meet The Top 3 Founders In Our Selfmade Pitch Competition!

When you launch a business, you have to know how to sell it: to customers, to potential investors, and to the people you bring on board. In the Selfmade Fall 2024 Pitch competition, we challenged our female entrepreneurs to sell us their big idea and compete to win over $10K in prizes to build and grow their business. The judging panel was made up of a group of inspiring women in business, including Emily Merrell, founder of Second Degree Society and Ready Set Coach; Niki Shamdasani, CEO of Sani Lifestyle Brand; and Joanne Oparu Ayebo Eriaku, business transformation strategist and founder of SOAR AI School of Readiness.

Selfmade is a unique, hands-on business membership for female founders. Our coaches support our mission to help make the dreams of female founders a reality. "Our mission is to even out the odds and offer a clear route to success for business owners who've been marginalized," Emily said during the competition.

Pitch day was filled with uplifting, celebratory moments as all members cheered on the 10 finalists. Winners were judged on creativity, inspiration, authenticity, uniqueness, and evidence of impact. The finalists were phenomenal in their pitches, but the judging panel had to make the tough decision of picking three women who really stood out. Hyacinth Tucker | The Laundry Basket

A US Army veteran and wife, Hyacinth owns and operates The Laundry Basket, a laundry subscription service that provides expert, laundry-on-demand and dry cleaning services in Maryland, DC, Northern Virginia, Northeast Ohio, and Toronto Canada. The company is committed to sustainability, offering zero-waste practices in partnership with non-profits like Impact Zero. They are also paving the way for minorities and veterans to build careers and businesses through their workforce development program. Hyacinthhas a masters of business administration and is a mom of two. When she’s not running the show, she loves traveling, reading, and playing games with her family.

Monica Casillas | Amor Movement

Founder Monica Casillas recognized that many young Latinas faced the same challenges she did in high school, experiencing the weight of generational traumas and their impact on growth and potential. Driven by her own experiences and determination, she set out to create a transformative movement with love as its guiding force. The mission behind Amor Movement is to ignite the passion and leadership potential in young Latinas in high school. The nonprofit is dedicated to equipping these future leaders with essential life skills, professional development, and civic engagement opportunities, empowering them to break barriers and create the lives of their dreams.

Yolanda's passion for clothing, accessories, and custom products inspired the creation of Skyler M Style & Wellness, named after her Cocker Spaniel who passed away from cancer in 2019. Skyler M Style & Wellness is an online boutique and pop-up shop in South Carolina that offers clothing, accessories, and custom gifts. They are also launching gift and subscription boxes that empower women to embrace their unique style while prioritizing wellness. Their carefully curated products offer a blend of fashion and self-care, solving the common struggle women face in balancing both.

Stephanie Hsu's 'Laid' Is The Spooky Rom-Com I Didn't Know I Needed

Reliving your dating history with your best friends and a glass of wine is, if you ask me, the definition of the ultimate girls' night. Trading dating horror stories usually ends with me laughing so hard I can't breathe. But in Stephanie Hsu's new romantic comedyLaid, going through her list of exes is anything but funny for one simple reason: they're all dying, and she needs to figure out why. Here's everything you need to know about the new show before it hits Peacock this December!

What is Laid about?

"Would you wanna know if you were gonna die?" Stephanie Hsu asks at the beginning of the Laid trailer. When Ruby (Stephanie) finds out her exes are all dying in strange ways, she has to go back through her relationship timelines in order to embrace the future. According to the official Peacock site, this crazy rom-com answers the age-old question of "Is there something wrong with me?" with “Yes. There is. The problem is definitely you.”

“When we started to develop Laid, we were intrigued by the idea of bringing back the old-school, traditional romantic comedy (swelling music! kisses in the rain! Anne Hathaway or someone who is also appealing!), but because we were living in such a dark time (pandemic! industry strikes!), we felt it needed to have some kind of twist,” co-showrunners & executive producers Nahnatchka Khan and Sally Bradford McKenna said in a joint statement. “Sure, it could be optimistic and heartwarming and make you believe in love again, but it should probably also have suspense, death, and blood."

I'm obsessed with the title of this show because of its double meaning, too. Not only does "laid" connect to all of Ruby's sexual encounters but it's also a nod to the fact her exes are being laid to rest. So clever!

Here, we meet Rita Suzanne, a marketing strategist for health and wellness businesses who learned to network, connect with other entrepreneurs, and build her business online and IRL.

What's an unexpected business challenge that you've had to face and how did you overcome it?

The hardest thing for me was my sister passed away and I ended up taking custody of my nieces. I ended up being a single mom of four kids. This is the thing that transitioned my whole entire life. I stopped doing web design and started my podcast Mom Owned and Operated. I wanted to reconnect with other moms and figure out how they were able to run their businesses and raise a family and take care of themselves because I wasn't able to do all three at the same time. Through that journey, I realized that I really needed to connect with other people and how important it was for my business. It helped me to create that community that I was yearning for that I didn't realize that I needed.

What's a recent small win for your business?

For me, the win was just pivoting back to something that I actually wanted to do. Also, I’ve started to say no to things that I no longer want to do.

Who is a woman in business that you look up to and why?

I have always admired and looked up to Amy Porterfield [author of Two Weeks Notice]. I listened to her all the time when I was starting out. I think that she's amazing and I love her stuff. She just seems like a very genuine person.

Is there a resource that has made an impact on you as an entrepreneur?

I listen to a lot of audio books. One of my favorites that has been huge for me is You Are A Badass by Jen Sincero. I was told when I first started my business, by a friend who was a business coach, that I have a mindset problem. Ten years ago, I had no idea even what “mindset” was. Sincero’s book helped me to see what she meant by “mindset” and helped me adjust that mindset and fix some of the things that I didn't realize were broken.

How has the Verizon Small Business Digital Ready Program helped propel your business forward?

There are a lot of things that I have loved about it. There are local networking and training opportunities, and that has been great, and the online training is very valuable. It's a great resource. I find that marketing needs a three-tiered approach, meaning you need to network it locally, socially, and then also have a very comprehensive online approach to your marketing. One of the Verizon Small Business trainings that I took was all about taking advantage of your local resources. I found that to be extremely valuable because often people think they need to just focus on social media. I don't think that people focus enough on their local community.

Ingredients:

4 cups white tea, such asPOM Pomegranate Orange Blossom White Tea
2 cups vodka, tequila, or gin
1 1/2 cups pineapple juice
2 cups orange or mandarin juice
1/2 cup water
3 cups sparkling water
Lychees and oranges, sliced for garnish
Ice

Preparation:

In a large bowl or pitcher, add white tea, spirit of choice, water, pineapple juice, mandarin juice and water.
Stir to combine.
Top with sparkling water, and garnish with lychees and orange slices.

Mandarins, such as Wonderful Halos
Food coloring markers
Scissors
Black heavyweight paper or card stock
Paring knife
Adhesive dots

Instructions:

Draw jack-o-lantern faces onto the mandarins with the food coloring marker.
Cut pairs of bat wings, leaving an extra bit – around ¼ inch – on the flat side to fold back and act as a tab. Add an adhesive dot to the tab to adhere each wing to the mandarin.
Cut pairs of small triangles for ears. Use the knife to cut small shallow slits on the top of the mandarin and tuck in the ears. (via Jodi Levine)
