6 Ways Your Smart Home Can Make You Healthier

Despite our best intentions, good habits are hard to keep. Meal prep falls apart, morning workouts get postponed due to bad weather, and early bedtimes get wiped out by Netflix marathons. Smart home tech is trying to help us get our sh*t together: These tiny AI assistants can remind us to do things, and they’re harder to ignore than those constant alerts on your smartphone. But you don’t have to take our word for it — we checked in with health and wellness pros about how they use their smart homes.

What Counts As Smart Home Tech?

When we say smart home tech, we mean gadgets that make your home “smart.” Devices like your iPad or Apple Watch don’t count because they’re just as smart when you take them outside the house. But Amazon devices like Echo & Alexa and the Google Home range would definitely fit the bill. These are called smart home “hubs” because they can control other smart stuff you can install in your house — like lights, TVs and streaming devices, security cameras, and thermostats.

If you haven’t seen the ads, here’s what you need to know: A smart home hub connects to your WiFi network. (So do any of the extras you want them to “talk” to.) When you set up your hub, you teach it to understand your voice so it can respond to your questions and commands. The result? A mostly hands-free way to do stuff like find recipes, update your grocery list, or even consult a virtual personal stylist.

Since most of us have a smartphone habit we’d like to kick — or even technology-related injuries to work on — it’s pretty huge that these devices allow us to go screen-free without sacrificing the more helpful aspects of staying connected.

How to Use Smart Home Tech for Healthy Living

1. Improve your sleep. Jeff Patton is a sleep and smart home expert with GE (or, more officially, GM of Connected Home Product Management for GE Lighting). He explains that smart lighting, like C-Sleep bulbs and the C by GE Sol, might be a big deal for people who have trouble getting up in the morning. “One of the key factors in healthy sleep habits is one many people don’t think that much about: light,” explains Patton. “What’s cool about smart home technology is we now have lighting designed to help reinforce the body’s natural rhythm to prepare the body to sleep and awaken more efficiently.” That means warm light in the evening, which Patton says may help increase melatonin, and a more blue-toned light in the morning, which can help you stay focused. Besides controlling smart lights, your home hub can help you get better sleep by eliminating any need for screen time before bed. You can use it to set an alarm, start a white noise playlist, or take you through a guided meditation session.

2. Blast those tunes. Mary Weidner, co-founder of the meal planning and training app Strongr Fastr, has one of the best home gym hacks we’ve heard all year. When she’s ready to train, she says, “Okay, Google: It’s time to work out.” Then, she explains, “[My Google Home] starts playing my workout playlist on Spotify and sets the volume to 70 percent.” That’s not an automatic feature, FYI — Weidner set it up using the device’s shortcut commands. But since most of us agree that music is the key to a great workout, this hack is a must-try for anyone who trains at home.

3. Master meal prep. When meal prep falls apart, it’s waaaay too easy to fall back on our fave food delivery services. And there’s nothing wrong with that — but sometimes, all you want is a damn vegetable. “I also use the Google Assistant to add things to my grocery list,” shares Weidner. Shopping list management is a common feature across the home hubs on the market. In fact, in some regions, you can even place a grocery order with your device. It’s called voice shopping, and we’re equal parts excited about it and concerned for our wallets. Weidner also uses her hub to keep track of those orphan vegetables that usually get lost in the depths of the crisper until way past the expiration date. For example: “Okay, Google: Remind me Friday afternoon to use the zucchini for dinner.”

4. Avoid food poisoning. “I also constantly am asking Google what temperature meat should reach when cooking. I never can remember that,” concedes Weidner (#relatable). Eventually, though, Weidner wants to graduate to a smart grill. “You just insert the temperature probe into the meat, and your phone notifies you when you should remove it from the grill.”

5. Get centered.Heidi Jones is a Fortë coach and private trainer based in NYC. Her job sometimes makes it hard to find time to herself. “I run all over the city to teach classes and meet clients at all times of the morning and evening,” she shares. In such a high-intensity work environment, Jones craves moments of virtual stillness. “I know it may sound silly to use Alexa to help me breathe deep, but if I don’t actually carve out this time, I won’t do it on my own,” she admits. “I simply say, ‘Alexa, start deep breathing,’ and she takes me through three minutes of guided breathing.” There are plenty of guided meditation options available to Google and Amazon smart home users, from relaxing background tracks to Headspace sessions.

6. Squeeze in a workout. “Something surprising to many people is the fact that there are days when it’s tough for me to get in my own workout,” says Jones. “Enter Alexa.” Jones uses the Amazon hub’s seven-minute workout — a full-body program including planks, squats, and step-ups. “I don’t have to think about it or program for myself,” she says. “And sometimes that [routine] is the only workout of the day.” If you’ve ever tried to hit the gym after a long day at the office, you know how tough it is to scrounge up the motivation to work out when you’re tired. But seven minutes? That’s totally doable. As Jones puts it, “One thing I know for sure is that any movement is better than no movement at all.”

I thought I was doing a great job of managing my anxiety... until the end of last year. It's not that I didn't have tools from therapy to calm myself down; it's more or less I wasn't in the right frame of mind to access them. The day after a panic attack, I spoke my with therapist about everything that was going on, and she asked me one of the deepest questions that I think saved my life: "Why do you think you have to control everything and everyone?"

Sensing my confusion, she decided to surprise me with this response, "You think planning for every contingency and working to prove you can juggle motherhood with everything else in your life makes you responsible. But they don't. All you're doing is sending your anxiety into overdrive." Jaw. On. The. Floor.

From my therapist to people in family who've been vocal about having 'bad nerves,' there's phrases I've learned from them that I like to repeat — like a mantra — whenever I'm rattled about something. Hopefully they help you too!

Scroll to see the 12 phrases I use to stay calm when I'm feeling anxious.

Mikhail Nilov

1. All I can control right now are my thoughts and my breathing.

Anxiety can feel like being stuck in a hot air balloon that keeps rising higher and higher. I could say it's merely 'fight or flight,' but it doesn't feel like the kind of travel anyone willing cancel plans for.

To combat the feeling of being held prisoner by it, saying something like "All I can control right now are my thoughts and breathing" is one of the easiest phrases I can remember. I repeat it as many times as I need to before I feel myself getting calmer.

Pavel Danilyuk

2. I am calm, I am safe, I have everything that I need.

Have you ever been scrolling on social media when you've felt your chest get tight while your mind is racing. Yeah, I've done it too. It's likely we're reading too many negative comments, coming across gloomy news, or feel jealous that our doesn't look like that one influencer we follow.

That's our cue to log off and tell ourselves, "I am calm, I am safe, I have everything that I need" because it's true.

3. This moment will pass, it's just a feeling.

Choosing not to let anxiety win isn't about ignoring how we feel. Our emotions are always valid, but we have to ask ourselves if we're willing to let them be the reason we do or say certain things.

If you ever have a moment where you feel you're about to say something harsh because of anxiety, remind yourself: "This moment will pass, it's just a feeling." If I don't say this to myself, someone in my inner circle will bring it up which usually catches my attention.

Andrea Piacquadio

4. You're not being chased by a lion, tiger, or bear.

It's extremely rare that any of us is being chased by a lion, tiger or bear, but anxiety probably tricks our mind into responding like we are. It's one of the greatest lies it believes so this silly, yet impactful phrase can help us relax our shoulders.

I hold tension in your upper shoulders and back when anxious so I like to say this phrase to remind myself there's no reason to lash out in 'fear' at whoever's in my vicinity.

MART PRODUCTION

5. Chances are, you'll never see this person again. Breathe.

I know the person in Target who skipped you in life keeps turning around and staring you down for no reason at all. Before you flick them off, remember that you don't even know who they are. This is probably the first time you've seen them and it'll be the last.

I personally had an experience where an elderly couple saw me standing in line at an Xfinity store with my son and decided to get in front of me because their issue was 'urgent.' When it was my turn, I let the customer service rep know I had an appointment and he immediately went to get someone to help me. To my amusement, the couple looked flabbergasted that they had to wait and I didn't even after skipping me.

That served as a reminder to remain calm even when people are being annoying and my anxiety wants to go off on them.

Andrea Piacquadio

6. My body is keeping me safe.

Getting anxiety because our bodies don't look the same as it did a few years ago is a sure way to let anxiety plague us with thoughts of what we should be doing. Instead of berating and cursing ourselves, remember that our bodies are keeping us safe. It doesn't matter if we think we need to eat healthier or not. In any given moment, our body is functioning the way it needs to so we can get through our day.

Besides healthy habits can't bloom if we're being negative!

7. This feels hard, but it's not the first time life hasn't been easy.

Life's not easy, but it doesn't mean we're destined to face hardships forever. There are ups and downs that not only teach lessons, but they also build character if we're willing to appreciate them.

Even if we could care less about both things, trust that we've made it through multiple hard moments and will be able to get through this one, eventually.

Emily Patnaude

8. I don't have to rush my way through life today or any other time.

Take a break from the rat race and breathe. People with anxiety are always thinking about all the things we want to accomplish and what we're missing out on, but rarely do we remember we don't have to rush to achieve success on our terms.

We deserve better than that so remember to say, "I don't have to rush my way through life today or any other time," when you're struggling.

Andrea Piacquadio

9. My anxiety isn't the enemy. It wants to keep me safe, but needs a little help.

Remember when Joy discovered Anxiety wasn't a bad emotion in Inside Out 2? That's a real connection that we can acknowledge because our anxiety doesn't want to hurt us. When it's hyperactive, it's doing whatever it can to keep us safe from potential bad scenarios.

Tell yourself, "My anxiety isn't the enemy. It wants to keep safe, but needs a little help," whenever you're sure that you hate it.

cottonbro studio

10. It is safe to ground myself.

Grounding ourselves has nothing to do with being in timeout. It's a means of getting connected with the present so that we're not living in our heads. Since overthinking can cause anxiety to spike, this saying is a reminder to come back to earth via meditation or walking barefoot outside for a few minutes.

Helena Lopes

11. What do I know to be true right now?

This is more of a question rather than a phrase, but it's still true. Since anxiety can believe the lie that we're in grave danger even when we're not, it helps to ask ourselves about the what's true in the current moment.

Let's say you've been in life for a little over 5 minutes and are starting to sweat because you think the person behind you thinks you're the reason the line is moving slowly. Ask yourself how many people are in front of you and if it's logical to take the blame for the line's snail pace. 9 time out of 10 your answer will debunk whatever your anxiety was telling you!

Mike Jones

12. My anxious thoughts are allowed to exit my mind with every exhale.

If you've mastered the art of saying phrases that calm you down, it doesn't hurt to repeat one more! Saying, "My anxious thoughts are allowed to exit my mind with every exhale" is another way to keep yourself calm when you're repeating things that aren't in the sound of your voice.

Taking deep breaths always calms me down in addition to repeating this phrase so I have it written in my phone, planner and journal.

Siri, play "So High School" by Taylor Swift because on January 26, the Chiefs officially became one of two teams to play in the 2025 Super Bowl and Taylor joined Travis Kelce on the field! There were laughs, hugs, and plenty of smooches, and I felt like I was witnessing the end of a rom-com play out in front of me — all on live TV. This couple makes plenty of appearances together, but I love the joy and chaos of something like a championship win because their interactions feel so authentic. Keep reading to see what Travis and Taylor said to each other after the game!

Here's everything that happened between Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce at the AFC Championship.

Taylor Swift was all smiles during Travis Kelce's post-win interview.

When the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Buffalo Bills on January 26 for the AFC Championship, Taylor Swift looked on as Travis Kelce hopped onstage with Patrick Mahomes and their coach Andy Reid. And not only did Travis give a great speech, but he broke out into a song of his own when he started singing "Get Down Tonight." We love a couple who can do it all!

"Never satisfied baby," Travis said when asked about how it felt to potentially win a third consecutive Super Bowl and break the NFL record. "When you play in front of Arrowhead Stadium like this every single AFC Championship, you kidding me?! Kansas City!"

And on the field, you can see Taylor Swift and Travis' mom Donna Kelce standing and laughing at his excitement.

And this couple just keeps proving how much they love each other.

But as exciting as the speech was, there's a moment that had fans more excited than anything: it looks like Taylor and Travis said "I love you" on the field.

While embracing and sharing a kiss after that win, Travis appears to say, "I love you so much," and Taylor seems to reply with, "I love you. I'm so proud of you" (which you can see in the video, and per People's report.)

All I can think about is Taylor talking at the end of "Daylight" about how she wants to be defined by the things she loves, not the things that she's afraid of, and the way she radiates life, love, and joy in her relationship with Travis Kelce really proves how much light he's brought into her life. To the Super Bowl we go!!!

Are you excited to see this Travis Kelce & Taylor Swift moment? Here's hoping we get another Super Bowl smooch too! Read up on Um, Travis Kelce Just Spilled On His Dream Wedding Amid Taylor Swift Engagement Rumors for more.

Starbucks fans, listen up: the chain just let us know that their spring menu may be coming sooner than you’d think.

If you've also been shelled up inside due to the frigid winter temperatures and find yourself craving everything spring, Starbucks is set to deliver in the coming months with two new menu items plus the return of a certain famed floral flavor.

Scroll on for everything we know about the Starbucks spring menu, plus the exact items to come!

Starbucks

NEW! Iced Cherry Chai

First up on the Starbucks spring menu is the all-new Iced Cherry Chai. We were huge fans of the chain's Iced Pumpkin Cream Chai over the fall, so anything that has to do with chai has our attention. Based on the same, we assume this iced chai beverage will include a cherry-flavored syrup to sweeten up the sip.

Starbucks

NEW! Jalapeño Chicken Pocket

A little birdy (AKA Starbucks!) also told us that there’s a new snack to join the 2025 spring menu. Meet the Jalapeño Chicken Pocket. The chain just dropped a similar-sounding item with their latest winter menu, the Spicy Falafel Pocket, which is essentially a savory pastry stuffed with falafel, creamy hummus, roasted red bell peppers, pickled onions, and a spicy herb sauce. Based on the Jalapeño Chicken Pocket name, it’s likely to be spicy and protein-packed. Yum!

Return of lavender

That’s right – Starbucks is reviving their lavender drinks for spring 2025. Last year, they launched three lavender-tinged bevs: the Lavender Oatmilk Latte (hot or iced), the Iced Lavender Oatmilk Matcha, and the Lavender Creme Frappuccino. We’re crossing our fingers all of them come back to menus, plus perhaps a new lavender offering!

When will the 2025 Starbucks spring menu drop?

The Starbucks spring menu is coming in March 2025. We’ll keep you posted with more official details on the menu items and exact release date!

While Mars retrograde continues, this month proves to be lovely and filled with possibilities. Now that the action planet is still in its backspin motion, it doesn’t mean you should be holding back from visualizing your dreams. Appreciate the stillness and explore different possibilities before deciding what’s right for you. Although you may feel like a sitting duck, I beg to differ. This Mars retrograde proves to be a test of our will by not being impulsive. Luckily, Mars goes direct later this month, so hang on tight before losing momentum.
