How to Stay Sober During Holiday Party Season

non alcoholic drinknon alcoholic drink

Ask many hosts the ingredients of a great holiday party, and you’ll likely find good friends, good food, and a good supply of alcohol are the essentials on their lists. However, a surprisingly large number of people say they can do without that last item. It's no surprise that the Dry January phenomenon has grown, and more and more sober-curious young people are looking for alternative ways to get their buzz.

There are a lot of reasons why someone might choose not to drink on a particular night (or ever). It might be that you’re concerned about the potential health risks associated with alcohol, you don’t like the sensation of being drunk or feeling out of control, or you’ve had an unhealthy relationship with or addiction to alcohol. Whatever your reason, no one should shame you formaking a personal decision about what you put in your body — but unfortunately, it can still feel awkward to be the person not joining in with others’ drinking, and this tension is especially prevalent in the holiday season.A study published by Laguna Treatment Hospital found that Instagram posts using hashtags related to addiction recovery and sobriety peaked in October, November, and December, when attending more parties means more pressure to drink. Here are six expert tips on staying sober (and helping friends stay sober) through this booziest time of the year.

Photo by Priscilla Du Preez on Unsplash

Remember that non-drinkers don’t owe anyone an explanation.

A decision not to drink really isn’t anyone else’s business. “Not everyone is comfortable discussing their sobriety: Don’t ask anyone why they aren’t drinking or pressure them,” emphasizesDr. Paul Little, Medical Director for Laguna Treatment Hospital and San Diego Addiction Treatment Center. “Enjoy all of your guests, whether they’re drinking or not!” If you’re a non-drinker feeling self-conscious about how to respond if someone offers you alcohol, it can help to have a scripted response ready.

“The best strategy is to have something prepared for when people ask you to drink,” agrees Dr. Deni Carise, PhD, Chief Scientific Officer for Recovery Centers of America. “You don’t need an elaborate story: All you have to say is, ‘No, thank you,’ or ‘Not right now.’” If you feel pressured to come up with something more substantial, licensed clinical psychologist Dr. Kevin Gilliland, Executive Director of outpatient treatment groupInnovation360, suggests pointing to health reasons: “You don’t need to clarify what health reasons, but you can talk about your heart or even say something abut medications you’re taking that you’re not supposed to be drinking on. You can also plan a workout class the next morning or say you don’t feel well.”

Reassure yourself that most people won’t care as much as you think they will.

When you first stop drinking, it can feel like everyone at the party is judging you, but often the awkwardness is in your head. “People don’t care about the question [of why you’re not drinking] nearly as much as you think,” reassures Dr. Gilliland. “When asked, give a short answer and change the subject. That awkward discussion lasts less than a minute.” Of course, there sometimes seems to be that one person who can’t let up — which says more about them than it does about you. Laura Taylor, who founded her own line of non-alcoholic drinks called Mingle Mocktails after she chose to stop drinking, says, “I’ve learned that most people just ask out of light curiosity and are satisfied with simple responses. Those who continue to probe with more questions are often asking because they’re considering their own drinking issues.” She advises that you keep your answers short and sweet: “I’ve learned the best response is to keep it brief: There are more interesting topics to discuss at parties than my drinking habits!”

BYO(N/A)B.

Depending on the party, it can be a good idea to bring your own non-alcoholic alternative to the boozy drinks on offer. Dr. Carise assures us, “It’s okay to bring a bottle of something non-alcoholic: Ginger ale and sparkling fruit ciders are a nice alternative to champagne, and they will ensure that sobriety doesn’t stop you from participating in a holiday toast.” Being seen holding a cup of something also stops people asking if they can get you a drink. “When I first stopped drinking, it was very hard for me to be with people I used to drink with,” Taylor admits, “so I would bring my own beverages. That way I had something in my hand, which helped me avoid unwanted attention.” Serve yourself soda or even water, and no one will be any the wiser.

Invite backup.

If you don’t want to be the only sober person surrounded by drinkers, consider bringing a friend to keep you company and to support you if you’re in recovery (assuming your host is welcoming plus-ones, of course). “Life can get a little easier and less anxious when we have someone with us that knows our struggles,” encourages Dr. Gilliland. That said, if you’re specifically battling addiction, it’s ultimately still down to you to make the choice to stay sober. “You will still need to think ahead about how to handle being around alcohol and people consuming alcohol,” he cautions. Even if you don’t physically bring someone with you, the magic of technology means you can still have them on hand. Before you go, Dr. Carise recommends, “Talk to the people in your support network to develop a plan to help you get through difficult moments. This could include excusing yourself to get some fresh air or to call someone close to you to work through whatever may be going on.”

Have a way out.

As the night goes on and the guests who are drinking go from cheerfully tipsy to downright drunk, being the last sober person standing gets less appealing — and the temptation to drink increases. It’s a good idea to plan out how you’re going to get home in advance so you can end your night before that point. That can be driving yourself — one of the perks to being sober! — or using a rideshare app, or planning a public transit route, or calling a friend. Knowing exactly how you’re going to get home can be comforting if you’re worried about how people will react to your decision not to drink (especially if they’re a group that you mainly know through alcohol-fueled events) or if you’re in recovery and feeling tempted. Don’t feel pressured to stay longer than you’re prepared to: People who are drunk probably won’t remember what time you left anyway!

Be a good host to sober friends and family.

Brianne McGuire, a writer and founder of website GRAPHICPAINT, who has been sober for over six years, says, “Make non-drinking guests feel included by providing a selection of interesting alcohol-free beverages: Warm cider, fizzy juice mixes, sparkling lemonades, and artisanal sodas are all great.” The food you serve can also help, she adds. “Cookies and cakes are helpful because they trick the body, satiating both mental and physical cravings for booze.” If you’re not sure what to buy, taking the time to reach out to a teetotal guest in advance to see if they have any preferences is a really considerate touch, says Taylor. Dr. Gilliland recommends moving the bar to shift the focus from booze: “Put it in a smaller room out of the main area.” Taylor adds that your bar can also be a way to engage non-drinkers: “One party I went to let people help themselves to a mocktail or a cocktail, which was fantastic.”

Ultimately, what non-drinkers want is just to be allowed to have fun without drawing attention to what is or isn’t in their cups. All you really need to have fun is the kind of understanding friends who make any evening into a party.

So, you've stopped asking "does makeup expire" and have become a pro at spotting unhealthy particles churning in your foundation. We're proud of you, but this TikTok video suggests there's two more things you're likely overlooking: your face wash and the mold that could be growing in it *insert music from Psycho.* If anything should be considered icky, it's this.

Usually we like to make a funny joke, but we've been telling our trusted cleanser we're not pleased with its sneaky potential to betray us. It's a good thing cosmetic dermatologist Courtney Allen, FNP-C is here to ease our fears! She's the founder of Canvas Skin (recently named Nashville’s top skincare center) who has over 10 years of skincare experience so her advice is one we can rely on!

Learn about why mold develops and what you can do before it makes your skin go haywire

I'm clueless. What causes mold to grow in face wash?

Tiger Lily/Pexels

We can agree face wash is meant to tackle skincare concerns like acne, dark spots, and extreme oiliness, right? Great, because it means we're confused about how mold can destroy the thing designed to help our skin. Thankfully, Allen has the answer to our burning question!
She says, "Mold can develop in face wash due to exposure to moisture, improper storage, expired preservatives, or contamination from dirty hands or water." If this made you question how you're currently storing your face wash, you're not alone!

Concerning preservatives, she said "most skincare products have preservatives to prevent microbial growth," but they're going to eventually "degrade." The only way Allen feels this is preventably is for us to "check expiration dates and replace face wash every 6-12 months (or sooner if it lacks preservatives or is organic)."

Noted, but how can I tell what the mold will look like?

Cora Pursley/Dupe Photos

We've probably seen mold growing on old fruit or food we've left uncovered in the refrigerator, but does it look the same in face wash? Allen says, "Mold in face wash may appear as discoloration (black, green, or white spots), texture changes (clumping or separation), or an unusual smell (musty or sour)."

Now that we think about it, we've used face washes in the past that looked like it was separating or had an awful smell whenever we used it. It just never occurred to us that they could've had mold in them!

The bottom line, Allen says, is "any change in consistency or scent should be a red flag!"

How would moldy face wash affect my skin?

Polina Tankilevitch/Pexels

Imagine you think you've hit the jackpot because you found face wash that was hidden behind other beauty products under your skin. Without checking the expiration date, you eagerly start using it only to experience confusion when you have an allergic reaction.
The reason your skin's unhappy is because "using a mold-contaminated face wash can lead to skin irritation, breakouts, rashes, fungal infections, or worsening of conditions like eczema, according to Allen. Why? It's all "due to exposure to harmful bacteria and fungi," she adds. Oh and if you have sensitive skin? She feels you're "especially at risk."

What should I do if I notice a problem with my face wash?

KATRIN BOLOVTSOVA/Pexels

Stop, drop and roll! Just kidding — that's not the answer in this situation. Allen's advice is a little more than a suggestion, however. "Immediately stop using it, discard the product, and sanitize the area where it was stored," she advises. But this isn't the time to get to the internal root of the problem. "Avoid trying to 'scoop out' the mold, as contamination spreads deeper than what’s visible," she mentions.

If there's a chance you're experience irritation in the wake of finding mold in your face wash, Allen doesn't think your life will never be the same. Instead, she wants you to "wash the face with a gentle cleanser and apply a soothing, fragrance-free moisturizer."

In other words, keep it simple post-exposure to mold!

Kaboompics.com/Pexels

To be on the safe side, you should always stop using beauty products if you notice they're irritating your skin. It could be that the ingredients are too harsh OR mold has secretly found its way inside your daily cleanser. But as long as you follow Allen's advice, you'll be okay!

In light of our current administration's desire to downsize the federal government, the National Parks Service was hit with around 1,000 layoffs in February – that means the crucial workers that maintain trails and camping grounds, man visitor centers, collect park fees, keep grounds clean, and more are no longer present.

This puts the safety (and cleanliness) of our national parksat risk. Whether it’s first-time visitors that don’t fully understand the mantra of ‘pack in, pack out’ or adventurers seeking their next summit, we’ve lost some of the proper guidance that makes the parks what they are: magical!

Your next visit to America’s national parks may look different at this time as the visitor experience has lost its charm due to these mass layoffs.

As the busy season starts to pick up, we’re sharing 5 ways to visit national parks responsibly and safely.

1. Follow 'leave no trace' principles.

Rachel Vine / PEXELS

Because many National Parks workers and rangers were laid off, each parks’ efforts to keep trails, campgrounds, visitor centers, and restrooms may be minimized, irregular, or non-existent. Following ‘leave no trace’ principles implies your full responsibility for cleaning up the trash, food scraps, and more that you bring into the park.

Leaving no trace also includes staying on designated trails to prevent erosion that could impact local ecosystems and wildlife. And when it comes to wildlife, it’s best to not interact with their habitats – keep a safe distance and never feed the animals you may come across. This is also for your own safety!

For more information and guidance on how you can leave no trace, visitLNT.org.

2. Plan ahead.

Robert Forever Ago / PEXELS

If your national park itinerary includes day hiking, backpacking, or camping, planning ahead will be a key step in making sure your trip is as seamless as can be. This is especially pertinent as certain trails and areas may experience closures in light of the recent NPS layoffs.

So, what does planning ahead look like? It could be checking park websites in advance to be aware of any closures, fees, wait times, or limited services, bringing your own maps, first-aid kits, and packing plenty of food and water.

3. Get familiar with being self-sufficient.

Andy Vu / PEXELS

This next method for responsibly visiting national parks goes hand-in-hand with ‘leave no trace’ and planning ahead. Since certain park rescue and ranger positions were also affected by the cuts, you’ll want to be 100% positive that you’ve brought everything you need in case of an emergency.

You’re not entirely on your own, though. During your visit, you’re sure to run into friendly faces that know basic first aid principles, how to read a map, and how to reach out for help if it’s needed. Make a friend on the trail or campground and simply show up for each other!

4. Be patient and respectful.

Zetong Li / PEXELS

Fewer workers and rangers in the national parks may mean slower service, whether it’s waiting to enter the parks or pay for goods. Of course, a slower process puts on a strain on everyone – visitors and workers alike. Be kind to staff and fellow parks lovers, and avoid peak hours to reduce any strain on park resources.

5. Support the parks through donations and volunteer work.

Lara Jameson / PEXELS

If you can’t make it out to (or simply don’t want to visit) a national park this season, you can still show your love and support for the parks by donating directly to NPS or groups like National Parks Conservation Association.

Additionally, contacting lawmakers in your local government for better park funding can be effective in making sure your voice is heard. Finally, you could also join volunteer programs in your nearest national park for things like trail maintenance or clean-ups.

Only two states in the United States don't observe daylight saving time, observing standard time year-round: Arizona and Hawaii. After all, they argue, these states already get plenty of sun. The other 48 states – AKA the rest of us – will spring forward our clocks by one hour on Sunday, March 9, at least for now. It's been reported that it's on the table for abolishing. While it's my favorite time of year (who doesn't love the longer days?), it comes with some not so good health news. Let's get into what you can expect this daylight saving time!

Here are 12 wacky facts you may not know about daylight saving time.

Canva Studio

1. Most of us are saying it wrong.

The correct term is actually "daylight saving time" — singular, not plural. Despite common usage, "saving" is used as an adjective describing the act of conserving daylight, not a plural noun.

Shutterstock

2. The time change has been linked to more hospital visits.

The American Heart Association found that the time change showed an increase in cases of heart attack and stroke. A scientific study found a rise in cases of Atrial Fibrillation (AFib), a condition that resulted in irregular heartbeats with symptoms like chest pain, dizziness, and fatigue. The increase was more prevalent among women and occurred only during the spring daylight saving time shift, not with the fall clock change.

Shutterstock

3. There are more car accidents during this time.

Losing an hour of sleep can also impact your road safety. A study found that the spring daylight saving time transition increases the risk of fatal traffic accidents in the U.S. by 6 percent.

Andrea Piacquadio

4. DST can increase your cortisol and stress levels.

Losing sleep and disrupting your body’s natural rhythm can do more than just leave you feeling groggy — it can actually spike your cortisol levels, the hormone linked to stress. Research shows that sleep deprivation and circadian misalignment can trigger an increase in cortisol, along with inflammatory markers and cytokine imbalances. Since cortisol and inflammatory proteins are released in response to stress, chronic elevations could contribute to long-term health issues.

Shutterstock

5. We're at higher risk of depression.

Many people report mood disturbances during this time, but for those with bipolar disorder, the effects can be particularly destabilizing. For instance, a 2020 study found that the change impacts mood disorders, depression, anxiety, and substance abuse. An Australian study revealed a significant increase in male suicide rates in the weeks following the start of daylight saving time, compared to both the weeks after the return to standard time and the rest of the year.

6. Benjamin Franklin first suggested the concept.

He didn’t technically invent daylight saving time (as some have reported), but he did conceive the idea a century before it was credited to George Vernon Hudson, a New Zealand artist who formally proposed it in an 1895 paper. Benjamin Franklin observed that if people in France adjusted their schedules to sleep when it was dark and wake with the sunrise, they could save hundreds of francs on candles — making artificial lighting less necessary.

Andy Feliciotti

7. There's already buzz to make DST permanent.

The Sunshine Protection Act is a proposed U.S. law aiming to make daylight saving time permanent, eliminating the need to change clocks twice a year.

Anna Shvets

8. Farmers actually fought against it.

Contrary to popular belief, farmers have never supported daylight saving time. In fact, they opposed its implementation and, in 1919, an agricultural lobby even pushed for its repeal.

Max Vakhtbovycn

9. We may actually consume more energy because of it.

While many believe daylight saving time conserves energy, research suggests it may actually do the opposite. A University of California-Santa Barbara study indicated that daylight saving time might increase consumption. A 2017 study in the International Association for Energy Economics Journal further supports this idea, noting that longer daylight hours can lead to more air conditioning in summer and heating in cooler months.

Federico Respini

10. Daylight saving time was extended in 2007.

First started in Germany, the U.S. adopted daylight saving time in 1918 and standardized it across the country with the passage of the 1966 Uniform Time Act, which gave the federal government oversight over the time change. It originally called for the last Sunday in April to the last Sunday in October. President George W. Bush’s Energy Policy Act of 2005 extended it from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November, starting in 2007.

Bhargava Marripati

11. About 70 countries observe daylight saving time.

Countries like Canada, Mexico, New Zealand, and those in the European Union observe daylight saving time either nationwide or in select regions. Meanwhile, most African and Asian nations — including India, China, and Japan — opt out of the time change entirely.

Kaylah Matthews

12. You can beat the clock.

Despite the health risks and safety concerns of daylight saving time, you can take steps to combat fatigue and adjust within a week. Here are B+C's 5 Best Ways to Beat Daylight Saving Time Fatigue.

Now that so many people have their heads buried in smartphones and other devices 24/7, countless timeless manners that once defined social decorum have seemingly slipped into oblivion.

The truth is there's a certain charm and respect that comes with old-school etiquette that's well worth reviving. So, here are some gestures and overall manners that should've never gone out of style in the first place.

Scroll to see all the old-school manners that have almost disappeared...

1. Getting Dressed Up

Marcus Queiroga Silva

In an age where super casual attire has become the norm, it's not uncommon to see people in pajamas at the grocery store or even attending doctor's appointments. While comfort is key, and athleisure is "in," there's still something special about dressing up for an occasion.

Whether you're just running errands, attending a casual gathering, or going out for a night on the town, taking the time to put together a thoughtful outfit shows you respect yourself, the people you're with, and whatever you're doing.

2. Addressing People With Titles

cottonbro studio

Addressing someone with a title like "sir," "ma'am," or "miss" wasn't just viewed as polite in the past. It also reflected a basic level of respect and acknowledgment of someone's status or age.

Using titles may seem old-fashioned in today's world, but it can still make a meaningful impact. While it's common for people to skip formalities and dive straight into conversation, taking a moment to use a respectful title is a small gesture that makes a great first impression.

3. Offering Seats To Women, Children, And Elderly

cottonbro studio

Did chivalry on public transport die? It used to be commonplace to offer up seats on buses, trains, and subways to women, children, and the elderly. Now, people are arguably so caught up with texting and social media that they might not notice (or care) to continue this act.

This tiny act of kindness doesn't take a lot of effort, but it speaks volumes about your character. If you see someone who might need your seat more, like a pregnant woman or an older man, offer your seat to show empathy and respect.

4. Being A Friendly Neighbor

Zen Chung

Being a friendly neighbor used to be a cornerstone of suburban life, but today, it's becoming increasingly rare for people to interact with those who live right next door.

Many people now come and go without much more than a polite wave or brief nod, and the days of chatting over the fence or borrowing a cup of sugar seem like a distant memory.

Nonetheless, taking the time to be a friendly, approachable neighbor can strengthen your sense of community. Don't be afraid to introduce yourself, greet them when you pass by, and offer help when you can.

5. Saying "Please" And "Thank You"

Mizuno K

Nowadays, convenience seems to trump consideration, and it's easy to forget the power of simple politeness. Saying "please" and "thank you" probably seems like basic manners, and that's because it is. Yet, these magic words are still becoming rare to hear.

The next time someone holds the door for you or rings up your groceries at the supermarket, don't forget to thank them. Or, when you're asking a retail employee for help, say please. These small phrases go a long way in showing appreciation and respect.

6. Apologizing In Real Life

Kaboompics.com

Everybody makes mistakes, but what's your go-to way to rectify them? When you've upset a loved one, you might type out a quick text or leave them a voicemail. While that's common practice today, nothing can replace in-person apologies.

Texts simply lack depth and can feel impersonal. By getting in your car, driving to your friend or partner's house, and knocking on their front door to apologize, you're making it clear that you feel genuine remorse and value their feelings.

7. Sending "Thank You" Notes

Katya Wolf

On a similar note, sending a "thank you" text to a friend or relative after they attend an important life event, like your birthday party, graduation, baby shower, or wedding, just isn't the same as sending a handwritten thank you note. This thoughtful gesture is now a lost art.

Not only is it helpful for our mental health and relationships to actively express gratitude to those around us, but it benefits the receiver, too. Ditch your texts (or worse, the mass "thank you" group chat), and send a thank you note instead.

8. Being A Bit Modest

Polina Zimmerman

Finally, this one may be a bit controversial, but it's time to bring back a bit of modesty.

Since so much of our lives revolve around social media, what we wear and how we portray ourselves online has turned into a competition. And it has pushed many people, especially teens and young women, to opt for more revealing clothing.

This isn't meant to shame anyone or stifle self-expression. On the contrary, having some modesty is about showing respect for yourself and not allowing just anyone access to your body. Plus, longing and desire are some of the most powerful emotions, and leaving certain things up to others' imagination can add to the allure of who you are.
