Some Millennials Still Don’t Understand What Defines Sexual Assault, According to a New Study

According to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN), 54 percent of victims of sexual assault are between the ages of 18 and 34, and one out of every six women and girls are victims. In total, someone in the US is sexually assaulted every 98 seconds. But despite the fact that sexual assault and rape happen every day — especially to women — a recent study shows that some millennials still aren’t entirely clear on what that means.

The study‘s findings, obtained by the National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC) in conjunction with YouGov, raises serious concerns about the state of sex consent education and awareness. If people aren’t fully informed about what sexual assault is and isn’t, it can lead to victims not understanding their own assault, and of course means that those who commit assault might not even realize they’re victimizing others.

Overall, the study’s survey of 1,221 American adults over the month of March found that a majority of respondents across age groups DO understand that having sex with someone without their consent is sexual violence. Similarly, 83 percent agreed that groping and fondling without consent is sexual violence.

But on the whole, the study found that 18 to 34-year-olds were less aware of different kinds of sexual violence than older adults.

For instance, just 46 percent of 18 to 34-year-old adults believed that unsolicited sexual comments are sexual violence, and only 56 percent thought that watching someone in private without their consent counts as sexual violence. Perhaps most alarmingly, just 65 percent of people between 18 and 34 believed that having sex with someone who is under the influence is sexual violence. This number was much higher for older adults 55 and over: 82 percent in this age group felt having sex with someone who is intoxicated is assault.

Alcohol is involved in a startling percentage of rapes and sexual assault, particularly among college students. According to a 2015 study from the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, 90 percent of “acquaintance rape and sexual assault” on college campuses occur when either or both of the assailant or victim have been drinking. But based on the findings of the NSVRC study, there’s a significant portion of millennials who feel that assaults that occur while the victim is intoxicated aren’t assaults at all.

Samantha, a 24-year-old who currently lives in New York City, was assaulted by someone she knew in college after both of them had been drinking and smoking weed. Samantha tells us that although she told the assailant “no” at least once, he persisted, and assaulted her without a condom.

Samantha says that at first, she didn’t believe what happened to her was sexual assault because she was under the influence. “When I opened up about [the assault], I would dilute what happened, saying it wasn’t actually sexual assault/ rape” because she had been drinking. She tells us that she even felt that she was at fault for what happened because she wasn’t sober at the time of the assault.

But now, Samantha tells us she feels differently about what happened. She says that reading about assault has led her to realize and understand that “no means no, no matter the circumstance.”

Claire, who is 39 and lives in Colorado, had a similar experience. Claire tells us that she was assaulted her freshman year of college after both she and the assailant — a guy she’d been dating at the time — had been drinking. Claire tells us that, after briefly passing out, she woke up to find the man attempting to have sex with he and made him leave her bed. He then tried to assault her roommate; Claire broke things off with him the next day.

Claire says that at the time, she didn’t think what happened to her was assault and that it was difficult to process what he had done. But, like Samantha, she feels differently about all of it now. “What happened was clearly date rape,” Claire says, adding that she doesn’t blame herself for what happened anymore.

Laura Palumbo, the Communications director for NSVRC, tells Brit + Co over email that the organization’s recent study shows that “there is much more work needed to be done to help individuals understand what constitutes sexual violence.” This means that while advocates work toward awareness and education, there are also things we can do to support one another when someone experiences sexual violence.

If you are sexually assaulted, surround yourself with supportive people who will believe you, listen to you, and not pressure you to take any action that you don’t want to take. If a friend or someone you know opens up about an assault, be patient, listen to them, offer your support, and above all: Believe them if they say they’ve survived sexual violence. We clearly have a long way to go where it comes to awareness; in the meantime, we need to be there for each other.

For further resources on sexual assault prevention, awareness, or supporting a survivor of assault, visit RAINN or a Rape Crisis Center near you.

This post has been updated with additional reporting by Meredith Holser.

When I went home for my annual vacation this summer, I was very prepared to spend all week on the beach. I was not prepared, however, to spend three days too sick to leave the house and to binge watch almost an entire season of The Great British Baking Show. Despite the fact my mom and sister love it, this was one series I'd never truly paid attention to. Maybe it's because I'm always watching a high stakes drama like Lost, or because I prefer the spontaneity and experimentation of cooking rather than the measured consistency of baking. But as soon as we started the first episode, all I could think was, Oh, I get it.

Comfort shows come in all genres, but there is no denying The Great British Baking Show is a be-all & end-all of comforting, cozy TV. Not only are the players kind and generous, but the show in and of itself can teach you a few things about baking! Honestly it gives me a similar feeling to standing in my grandma's kitchen (although nothing could truly match that feeling). Series 12 is coming to Netflix this weekend, which means you can whip up some breakfast in bed and spend all morning drooling over UK baked goods (which is an average weekend for me TBH). Here's everything you need to know about the new show.

Is there a 2024 Great British Baking Show?

Yes, The Great British Baking Show season 12 is coming to Netflix this weekend! Just like the seasons we know and love, season 12 brings together a group of amateur bakers who present everything from biscuits to cakes and eclairs to judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith.

Where can I watch The Great British Bake Off 2024?

Netflix

The Great British Baking Show (known as The Great British Bake Off in the UK) will hit Netflix on September 27, 2024. We'll get a new episode every Friday until the finale on November 29. There will be 10, 60-minute episodes total.

Who are the bakers this season?

Netflix

This year's bakers include Andy, Christiaan, Dylan, Georgie, Gill, Hazel, Illiyin, Jeff, John, Mike, Nelly, and Sumayah. Judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith are returning, as are co-hosts Alison Hammond and Noel Fielding.

I think we all remember tuning into our favorite Disney show, Hannah Montana, only to see the ever-iconic "Jolene" singer, Dolly Parton, show up to feature as a guest star. I remember feeling shocked, and wondering what the relation was — only to find out that Dolly was Miley Cyrus' real-life "honorary godmother"! And this relationship runs deep!

Throughout many interviews over the years, it's clear Miley and Dolly continue to share a lot of love, admiration, and respect between them given the way they talk about each other. TBH, we couldn't love them more! With that said, here's a breakdown of their heartwarming relationship — plus all their beautiful collaborations and sweet moments they've shared.

How did Dolly Parton and Miley Cyrus meet?

As you may know, Miley's dad, Billy Ray Cyrus, is a popular country music artist. During his "Achy Breaky Heart" era — yes, it's stuck my head now, too — he connected with Dolly as they toured together. Dolly recounted more about this to the London Evening Standard last year when she said that “...of course, Miley became my goddaughter; I was her fairy godmother." She continued, "We really have a true bond; she is like a daughter or a sister to me.”

Are Miley Cyrus and Dolly Parton related?

Photo by Michael Loccisano/Getty Images for SXSW

Dolly has claimed to be Miley's "honorary godmother." She told Howard Stern recently that she's known Miley since she was born, and even retold the story of how she came to be Miley's amazing godmother. She told Howard of Billy Ray, "And he said … ‘We’re having a girl, and you’ve got to be her godmother!’ And I said: ‘Well, I’d be honored.’" And while that was the inception of this beautiful relationship, Dolly elaborated that it was really what formed between she and Miley that made it so special. She said, "So actually, Miley and I took over from there. We just stayed very, very close through the years.”

And this week, Access Hollywood has actually revealed that the two are, indeed, related by blood after all! In the interview, Ancestry revealed that Dolly and Miley are actually seventh cousins once removed! It turns out their family member that they have in common was named John Brickey who lived in Virginia in 1740. Dolly was ecstatic over the news saying, "Is that true? That's amazing! Well, we're so close, Miley and I. I would've thought we would've been at least third cousins, 10 times removed." In regards to how Miley felt about the news? She said, "I’m sure she'll get a kick out of that, but it doesn’t surprise me because she does feel like family." We didn't think we could love these two anymore, but it turns out we can!

Have they collaborated on any projects?

Photo by Emma McIntyre/Getty Images for The Recording Academy

Ever since the Hannah Montana days, these two have collaborated on projects and music! Dolly appeared on Miley's song, "Rainbowland,"and Miley returned the favor by appearing on Dolly's rendition of "Wrecking Ball" last year. The two have also covered each other's songs countless times over the years — not to mention the clear influence Dolly's music had on Miley's own songwriting in general.

In an interview with NPR, Miley discussed how Dolly helped her understand sexuality and personality in music. She says, "The best thing that she does is, she's not afraid to laugh at herself," she said. "And she pushed the boundaries for country music, by looking the way that she does, and saying the things that she says, and being sexual in that way. I mean, there's no one that's been able to make country music sexual more than Dolly!"

Our Favorite Miley and Dolly Moments

These sweet girlies have shared so many amazing moments, so keep scrolling to see their best collaborations, and all of our favorite times they've talked about each other over the years!

Miley Cyrus and Dolly Parton Singing on New Years Eve

One of my favorite, most recent, moments for this adorable duo is this stunning performance of "Wrecking Ball" and "I Will Always Love You." They combined their most popular songs into a stunning harmonious medley, while also showcasing their love and friendship for each other. This was a stunning and emotional moment for everyone tuning in to watch their New Years Eve special!

Miley Cyrus and Dolly Parton Singing "Jolene"

We all know and love this song, but I will certainly remember being introduced to "Jolene" with Miley's iconic cover when I was a kid. I love this rendition where the two pals get to sing it together, too. Their voices are so different, yet blend incredibly well together! This was yet another sweet moment for the books!

Miley Recreates Dolly Parton Classic With Jimmy Fallon

In this absolutely hilarious skit, we see Jimmy Fallon and Miley Cyrus re-create Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers' classic hit, "Islands in the Stream." And Miley, busty and all, goes fully into the character. This was such a funny moment, and we love how the two are able to poke fun at each other in respectful, yet hilarious ways.

Miley Cyrus Says Dolly Only Contacts Her Via Fax

One of our favorite things about Dolly is her drastic aversion to technology. Miley told Seth Meyers about a hilarious instance she had with Dolly about this. She claimed that Dolly doesn't mind using a phone, but whenever she needs to talk to someone over text, she'll do a fax, and then someone who works for her will scan the fax, then the scan will go into a text, which then gets sent to Miley. Whew! We're exhausted just thinking about it!

Miley says that if Dolly wants to send a demo, then it's a similarly complicated process. She'll record a cassette, which gets recorded on a flip phone, which gets recorded on an iPhone voice memo, which then gets sent to Miley. We're glad Miley's finding the humor in Dolly's anti-technology quirks!

Miley Cyrus Covers Dolly Parton's Song "Light of a Clear Blue Morning"

Miley's voice may be different than Dolly's, but you can't dispute that her growly vibrato, and yodel-edque vocals were made for country. So when she covered this stunning Dolly song, she definitely killed it and delivered a beautiful cover. Don't mind us keeping this on repeat until further notice...

Dolly Parton Talks About Being Miley's Godmother

In this Wired interview, Dolly answered common questions that she gets about herself online, and one of the questions was about Miley. In regards to the question, "Is Dolly Parton Miley Cyrus' Godmother?" Dolly said, "Well everybody knows that. I would actually say I'm the fairy godmother of Miley Cyrus." We love how fun Dolly is, and we can tell how proud she is to be Miley's godmother!

Dolly Parton Covers Miley's "Wrecking Ball"

@dollyparton When I heard 'Wrecking Ball' I almost wept in my car. When it started into the chorus it hit me like a wrecking ball! I thought how great can a song be and how great can @Miley Cyrus ♬ Wrecking Ball - Dolly Parton

Dolly talked about how beautiful Miley Cyrus' song "Wrecking Ball is", and how much she needed to cover it, on her Tiktok account. Dolly talked about how much the song meant to her, and how much it meant to have Miley sing it with her on her rock album. She concluded with, "How great can a song be?" We definitely agree, Dolly!
