This One Simple Tip Will Make Your Sourdough Starter Even Easier

sourdough starter

Sourdough is having a moment. More specifically, sourdough starters, which have seemingly taken over our TikTok FYP (just check out the channel itself). But for so many, sourdough seems too complex to actually create. It’s not the ingredients or the actual baking that seems the hardest — it’s the patience that’s required during the sourdough starter process (and waiting while it’s cooking in the oven, but who doesn’t love the smell of freshly baked bread?!). To demystify this delicately baked deliciousness and all it's prep, we chatted with expert baker, Annie Paul. Here are some the simple tips for making your sourdough starter experience less of a hassle!

First, what is sourdough starter?

The reason you're seeing those aesthetic videos of sourdough starter moving around in a bowl is because, well, it’s technically alive. The starter consists of live fermented culture (wild yeast and lactic acid bacteria) created by fresh flour and water. Why is this an essential part of the sourdough bread baking process? It causes the dough to rise. And don’t get thrown off by the term “wild yeast,” because it’s pretty much found everywhere — fruits, flowers, vegetables, etc. all carry it!

But don't worry — it may seem intimidating to keep this concoction alive, but we've got you covered with one very hot tip.

The Tip? Establish A Feeding Schedule For Your Sourdough Starter

Making a sourdough starter is approximately a seven day commitment. This can sound overwhelming, but if you stay consistent, it’s really not a hard feat! The easiest way to culture a successful starter is to establish a feeding schedule — this means adding in more fresh flour and water and allowing it to ferment for an extended period of time. You can leave it in a jar or bowl on the counter.

Depending on the recipe you're following and if your home is on the warmer side, you’ll likely be doing this twice a day with equal parts water and flour (around every 12 hours). A kitchen scale and written out time chart is one of the simplest tools to keep track of the ingredient amounts and times that your sourdough starter should be fed. Don’t know where to start? Just check out our beginner-friendly sourdough bread recipe.

PSA: You Don’t Have to Make A Sourdough Starter Yourself

To the bakers out there that are still intimated by the length of time it takes to make a good sourdough starter, you actually don’t have to make it yourself. “My best tip is to go to a bakery that makes really good sourdough bread and ask to buy some of their starter,” Annie Paul, winner of Magnolia Network’s Silos Baking Competition and bakery owner of A P Baked Goods in Michigan, said.

Paul added that most bakeries have a starter that’s “years and years old and that will really improve the flavor of your bread.” Asking your local artisanal bakery not only aids small businesses but also may get you the tastiest of results. No matter which sourdough starter path you choose (homemade or bakery bought), you will not be disappointed with a warm slice of bread and butter.

There is something about baking that's so calming — which is why so many people tend to hone in and craft the skill so often. Well, that, and the fact that you typically get a reward in the form of a delicious sweet treat at the end, as a result of your hard work. And one of the most satisfying treats to bake? Cupcakes.

Cupcakes are one of the most classic desserts, simply because they’re pretty easy to make, super versatile, and mouth-watering nearly every time (boxed mix or not!). When you make a lot of cupcakes though, either for celebrations or as a hobby, you tend to learn the tips in tricks — and these can really take your cupcakes to the next level. I've picked up that you should always bring your ingredients to room temperature, not over-mix everything, and to definitely use vanilla bean paste instead of vanilla extract. If you haven’t committed to that last baking tip yet, then you’re about to upgrade your cupcakes in a whole new and tasty way.

What Is Vanilla Bean Paste?

Kaboompics.com

Vanilla bean paste is essentially a more concentrated version of vanilla. Because it’s a paste, it has a thicker consistency than vanilla extract, which is a liquid. When you use vanilla bean paste you can see specks of a dark color — those are vanilla bean seeds. This allows for a more intense flavor of vanilla in your baked goods.

Pure vanilla extract is made from soaked vanilla beans in water and ethyl alcohol (vanilla bean paste may have traces of vanilla extract, but you can opt for alcohol-free ones — like the one Trader Joe’s carries!). This lends to a milder flavor, usually found in simple cakes, cupcakes, cookies and more. If you do go this route, make sure to opt for pure vanilla extract for optimal flavor and less ingredients mixed within it.

Why You Should Use Vanilla Bean Paste In Cupcakes

Los Muertos Crew

Vanilla acts as an enhancer in many baker kitchens because it allows for floral notes and a sweet aroma to come through the dessert. Due to the fact that vanilla bean paste has a more concentrated flavor, it offers your baked goods a much more robust taste — exactly what you want for your desserts! Instead of a muted flavor, you're sure to get better, bolder cupcakes with this trick!

Christina Polupanova

Trust us, it’s a game changer — especially for vanilla cupcakes, which don’t rely on many other ingredients for flavor other than, well, vanilla. Cake loafs, cheesecakes, cookies, and cinnamon rolls are all examples of recipes that would benefit from using the paste instead. Vanilla bean paste can easily be substituted in any baked good that calls for vanilla extract with a one to one ratio.

Amazon

Despite it not being used as frequently in recipes as vanilla extract is, vanilla bean paste is not hard to track down. You can easily find it in your local grocery store or certain online retailers (and, in some cases, it’s actually more affordable than the vanilla extract version). When you switch to vanilla bean paste you’ll never go back — and neither will your friends, because they will never stop asking you to bake them something.

Kitchen renovations are no joke – they're a major investment, so you’ll want to think twice before committing to fleeting trends — especially for big-ticket items like cabinets, countertops, and appliances. I’ll admit it: I’m still without a backsplash five years later because I can’t commit! While it’s perfectly fine to follow your heart if you love a particular look, kitchens can quickly feel outdated when you lean too heavily on short-lived fads. To help you create a timeless, stylish space, we’ve rounded up outdated kitchen trends to avoid — and easy ways to modernize if your kitchen is stuck in the past.

Scroll to see if you have these outdated kitchen trends in your house right now!

Mark McCammon

1. All-White Kitchens

The all-white kitchen craze has officially run its course, often feeling cold and sterile — like say a doctor’s office. Today’s kitchens are all about warmth and character, with palettes in soft neutrals, earthy greens, or bold, moody shades like oxblood and midnight blue. Choose a color that speaks to you for a timeless, inviting space you'll love for years to come.

2. Granite Countertops

This early 2000s trend has been overdone and feels so dated now. Marble, sleek quartz, even butcher block are more classic choices.

Curtis Adams

3. Ornate Cabinetry

The color and detail of this traditional kitchen feels drab and dated. Instead, look for flat-panel or Shaker-style cabinets with clean, minimal lines.

Terry Magallanes

4. Farmhouse Decor

This kitchen is a lesson is don'ts. The grey vinyl flooring (especially hideous!), farmhouse stools, and white cabinetry hail from a decades-old trend that needs to disappear in 2025.

Home Depot

5. Glass Mosaic Tiles

Glass mosaics, popular in the 2000s and 2010s, tend to lean toward a transitional aesthetic, which is the opposite of an organic, minimalist, or vintage-inspired design kitchen are craving now. The grout lines are bit difficult to clean too between all the tiny tiles. Zellige tile or a slab of marble are a more sophisticated look for today's kitchens.

Level 23 Media

6. Black & White

The stark contrast between black and white can come across as harsh and overly dramatic, a look that peaked in the 2010s. The farmhouse sign doesn't help warm it up either. Soften the look with earthy, natural tones.

Curtis Adams

7. Subway Tile

Subway tile is classic, so there’s no need to rip it out if it still brings you joy. However, the white subway tile paired with dark grout has overstayed its welcome. This overdone trend became so ubiquitous that it lost its charm and individuality, leaving kitchens looking more cookie-cutter than full of character.

8. Industrial Lighting

This nod to the past needs to, sorry, stay in the past. Look for organic, natural forms and lighting that reflects your kitchen's unique aesthetic.

Shutterstock

9. Tuscan Style

This rustic kitchen feels dated with its heavy, ornate features like dark wood cabinetry and trim. Go for clean, brighter spaces.

Shutterstock

10. Tile Countertops

Natural stone, marble, and wood are trending for 2025. Grout-filled countertops like this one are not. Time to go!

Max Vakhtbovycn

11. Moroccan Mosaic Tile

Kitchens are becoming elegant places to cook, eat, and gather. This busy design can look cheap. The white mid-century Eames-style chairs, sorry to say, are also out.

Andrea Davis

12. Barn Doors

Using barn doors between the kitchen and other spaces is a look that is officially out. They proved to be not that functional and the look is now dated and too kitschy. Buh bye!

If adulthood has taught me anything thus far, it’s that we’re all just looking for things to make life easier. Maybe it’s a gentle eye cream that works the wonders of an esthetician alone, or an iconic Y2K top that keeps you from hitting a wardrobe slump. Whatever your fix is, you simply can’t deny that cooking for yourself is simultaneously the most gratifying yet frustrating part of being an adult – it’s hard to manage recipe measurements, keep the food you have from going bad, and not burn whatever you’ve got going on in the oven *all* by yourself – no matter your skill level, we could all use a little help from time to time.

Though there’s not a one-size-fits-all solution to solo kitchen work, I’ve luckily found some gems that’ve immensely aided those woes. Here are the best appliances and tools I added to my mealtime workflow that have seriously made cooking *lightyears* more enjoyable.

Farberware Salad Spinner ($22)

Yes, I did in fact fall victim to the untamed TikTok hype. The amount of times I’ve had a batch of strawberries turn rotten in a matter of days is actually appalling, so I had to see what it was all about!

And the girlies were right – the hack of all hacks using a salad spinner to clean and dry your produce kept my precious store-bought berries fresher for *so* much longer, stretching my dollar a little bit further, and making breakfast time all the more satisfying. Beyond berries, I’ve started using the spinner to get veggies ready for weekly meal prep sessions.

I, of course, would be missing the point if I didn’t use this thing for actualsalads. I found that it was just as helpful in forming a big bowl of greens. Thanks to this salad spinner, I’m forever saying “bye bye, soggy lettuce.”

OXO Citrus Juicer ($12)

I went sans-juicer for making margaritas or salad dressings for the longest time, just because I simply thought I didn't need one – my buff forearms and hands were enough to get the goodness out! That’s exactly what I thought – until I had a transformative experience with a friend’s juicer one day. It was so much easier to use! The juice didn’t seep into my papercuts! *And* it measured the liquid! What a delight.

I opted for this one with a grip design that eliminates frustrating slips or spills. The best part about it is the roomy measuring cup attachment that keeps track of how much juice you’re juicin’. No more sore arms and stinging cuts for me.

Hamilton Beach Electric Kettle ($37)

Where I live, it reaches bone-chilling, teeth-chattering levels of cold in the wintertime. And though a solid jacket or scarf does me well, nothing properly warms me up like a steaming mug of tea. This electric kettle *tremendously* changed my hot beverage game, thanks to its speed and convenience!

Growing up using a traditional stovetop kettle, it took me a while to realize that eclectic kettles were… actually a thing. They can boil water so fast, it puts the OG kettles to shame. Beyond tea time, I like using this appliance to preheat my pasta water, so it doesn’t take literal eons to reach a rolling boil on the burner – a personal life hack of sorts.

Maxcocola Mug Tree ($13)

For me, it’s extremely hard to enjoy cooking in a crowded kitchen. And though this pick isn’t an appliance by definition, it’s certainly helped me organize my dishes and clear some counter space for prepping food more efficiently.

This mug tree fits up to 6 mugs (admittedly, not enough for this thrift store mug hoarder) and exemplifies that utilizing vertical space is *the* absolute move for kitchen organization. Besides being a practical tool, it’s also a fun way to display only my cutest mugs in an easy-to-see place!

Steamer Basket ($30)

I’ll admit that heating up frozen dumplings in the microwave is a complete atrocity to tradition – but that’s the old me. Thanks to a gracious gift from MìLà, their Soup Dumpling Experience, I’ve seen the light in a *properly* steamed dumpling.

Using a bamboo steamer gives those little pockets of food some actual life – every variety I’ve made thus far (the MìLà Soup Dumplings, Trader Joe’s Chicken Gyoza Potstickers, and bao buns from H-Mart) has turned out juicer and softer than the sad, microwaved dumplings I was tolerating before.

If you haven’t given bamboo steamers a chance, I urge you to try one out. The next time those Asian food cravings hit, you’ll thank yourself for making dumplings the *right* way.

Ninja Creami Breeze ($200)

Baking *is* fun and all, but sometimes I want a sweet treat to magically appear in front of me without any real work. And though I’m no stranger to the gelato shop down my street, it’s hard to avoid the thought that indulging in a frequent double scoop isn’t all that healthy for me.

The Ninja Creami Breeze is a well-rounded winner in my kitchen. It’s *ridiculously* easy to use, making healthy, protein-packed frozen desserts (to replace my pesky gelato habit) in seconds. I didn’t fully understand the wonders TikTokers spoke of until I really got my hands on it. After trying a handful of recipes, I’m all the way in.

Jessica Simpson and her husband Eric Johnson have decided to go their separate ways. After 10 years of marriage, Jessica revealed on January 13 that they've been "navigating" a "painful situation" that arose in their relationship, three months after sources told TMZ the singer reached out to a divorce attorney. But despite the shift in their relationship status, there's one thing Jessica and Eric are focusing on.

Here's what Jessica Simpson had to say about her split from Eric Johnson.

Jessica Simpson and Eric Johnson are "focusing" on their kids amid their split.

Jessica Simpson explained her decision to split from husband, former NFL tight end Eric Johnson, with whom she shares three children: 12-year-old Maxwell Drew, 11-year-old Ace Knute, and 5-year-old Birdie Mae.

"Eric and I have been living separately navigating a painful situation in our marriage," Jessica told People. "Our children come first, and we are focusing on what is best for them. We are grateful for all of the love and support that has been coming our way, and appreciate privacy right now as we work through this as a family."

The popstar celebrated her kids' return to school in September with a super sweet Instagram post. "Maxwell, Ace and Birdie y’all make your Mom beam with smiles and grace !" she says. "Keep on showin’ up for yourselves with each step of the way through this new school year! I’m so very proud of y’all for individually shining your light so that in return others feel the glow."

Jessica Simpson and Eric Johnson met in 2010 through a mutual friend, and ended up getting engaged six months after they started dating. They were married in July of 2014, where Maxwell and Ace were the flower girl and ring bearer.

The "I Wanna Love You Forever" singer celebrated their 10th anniversary with an Instagram post in May 2020, saying, "I fell head over slippers in love with this perfect man 10 YEARS ago today! By chance he knocked on my dreamy cottage door (sigh), I let him in and never let him leave. He is mine, I am his…forever."

And the couple's decision to announce their separation comes after Jessica posted about "putting up with everything I did not deserve" and about how "life is short."

"SMILE while you still have teeth," she jokes.
