14 Ways to Make Money from Spring Cleaning

We’re in the middle of April and the fresh days of spring. With that comes the endless proclamations of “This weekend I’m doing some major spring cleaning!” While many tend to push it off weekend after weekend, we think we’ve found the secret to getting everyone to actually tackle the dreaded task: by promising you can make easy money doing it! We’ve previously covered some of the best online outlets for reselling clothes once you’ve sorted through what you want to keep and what you don’t for the season, so we thought of other things you could be tossing out that could make you money. If your phone’s space allows, we think you should download all these apps so you can make it rain courtesy of some spring cleaning action — without having to resort to Craigslist.

Sell Your Entertainment Devices

After emptying out the closet, scrubbing the house and even giving the dog her seasonal bath, it’s time to hit up the entertainment aisle of your home. While there are apps for selling movies, TV shows and games, there isn’t one specific to reselling the actual TV, your old camera or even that years-old smartphone. So swing by Best Buy or GameStop or visit Amazon or Gazelle to sell all your tech devices. Then, if you’ve still got a bunch of discs or even an instrument, download the below apps for those needs.

1. Decluttr: We’re sure the thought has crossed your mind of getting rid of DVDs, CDs and games before. Why have them take up space when you can easily stream them? Enter the barcode of that Friendsseries box set and make some extra cash by selling it to someone who hasn’t heard of Netflix.

DL It: Free on iOS + Android

2. Reverb: Done pretending you’re ever gonna learn how to string a guitar? After you dig up the instrument from the depths of your closet, snap a shot + upload it to this app, then watch the offers come in. Before you know it, the strummer will be in the hands of someone who will probably take advantage of the music maker.

DL It: Free on iOS + Android

 Sell and Ship Anything

If your phone’s storage space is way too full for a slew of new apps, check out one of these to get rid of everything in your sell pile in one go.

3. Mercari: Sell everything from electronics, fashion + jewelry or even things you’ve handmade by snapping a shot and creating a listing. Then, once someone snatches up your items, you print, ship and get paid. So easy, even your kids could do it.

DL It: Free on iOS + Android

4. Carousell: This secondhand marketplace allows you to clean up your clutter while making a dollar. By snapping your product and chatting with buyers of your products — makeup, shoes, dresses, kids’ attire and more — the more you post, the more you make. And declutter ;)

 Sell Your Stuff Locally

When it comes to buying and selling all your items without shipping through an app, there are a ton of options. You could go the virtual garage route, sell your items socially, keep your sales within a five mile radius or put a bunch of offers up and see what sticks. In case all those choices aren’t enough for your seller outlets, we picked out three of our faves you should definitely download STAT.

5. Saily: Snap a picture, set a price, write a quick description and get your sell on. Not only can you unload your no-longer-useful items onto others and make money in the process, but you can also follow users with similar interests so you can be notified when they upload new items to guarantee you don’t miss out on a must-have.

DL It: Free on iOS

6. Wallapop: Yes, flea markets are fun to check out on the weekend, but sometimes you want to hit them up on the daily. That’s where this app steps in, enabling you to buy and sell your previously used items where you can then turn around and get some items from other buyers. All that’s missing from this app is the quintessential flea market food trucks.

DL It: Free on iOS + Android

7. Neerbuy: This app makes selling items as easy as tweeting can be. Upload an image of your item(s), add a little description, then chat with potential interested buyers. Then once you get a buyer, easily discuss when and where to meet and make that transaction complete.

DL It: Free on iOS

Sell Your Gift Cards

Sometimes — always? — you just don’t want or know what to do with that gift card your Aunt/Grandma gave you for Christmas. Now, instead of letting it go to waste and decay in your nightstand drawer, sell it to make some cash or to buy one you’re actually going to end up using.

8 + 9. Raise + SaveYa: Both of these apps allow you to sell your gift cards for cash or buy gift cards at a discounted rate. The best part is you can sell and buy instantly and then turn that money into spent cash immediately. No one said just because you’re making money, you had to save it ;)

 Sell Your Kids’ Clothes

Your little ones grow out of their clothing fast, but sometimes you don’t have the chance to pass it on to a friend or find other uses for it. Now you have options to not only get rid of the hand-me-down piles, but you can make money too.

10. Totspot: Once you finally have the time to clean out your growing kids’ closet and drawers — if ever — create listings of all their too-small outfits and make some money on them. Everyone knows how expensive kids are, after all.

DL It: Free on iOS + Android

11. Kidizen: Create your own shop in this parent-to-parent children’s clothing marketplace. Sell in a snap, buy in a click and even discover new kids’ fashion designers in this so-cute-you’ll-want-it-all resale app.

DL It: Free on iOS

 Sell Your Home Decor

A spring cleaning session could totally involve ditching your current furniture and picking out some new pieces. There’s no need to drag everything out on your driveway for a garage sale when apps are in our world.

12. Chairish: Head to this app where you can sell your unwanted home accessories, while also picking up some vintage finds. Think of this one like a digital estate sale.

DL It: Free on iOS

13. Krrb: Looking for a curiously global classifieds app made just for you? This is it! With this app you can discover what’s around you while on the go or create your own listings of stylish houseware for others to scavenge or rummage through. Make money and connections all at once? Sold.

DL It: Free on iOS

 Sell Your Collectables

Discover some ancient treasures you used to collect and hold near and dear to your heart when you were clearing out the depths of your closet? Don’t just shove them back where you found ’em or toss them on the curb when you can make some extra cash instead.

14. Gemr: This app will be a goldmine for your closet treasures. Get rid of the newly discovered collector’s items and put them in the hands of those who will actually cherish them these days. If you actually happen to be looking to get back into the collection game after clearing some space, discover anything and everything thanks to this app’s social feed.

It’s never too early to get a start on a basic spring cleaning checklist that will make your home (and you) feel and look better. And as we all crawl out of our winter hibernation and inch towards the warmth of spring, it’s time to give your home some TLC. Staying on top of these maintenance to-dos will give you peace of mind and ultimately save you money in the long run — because we'd rather spend that money on a spring wardrobe, am I right?

I know the sheer volume of things to do can feel like a never-ending list, but there's no need to be overwhelmed or intimidated by these simple tasks! I’m here to hold your hand and walk you through each item on the checklist. Together, we’ll clean our way to a well-loved home, finding confidence along the way. And I have no doubt you've got this.

Each task on this spring cleaning checklist includes a fool-proof step-by-step guide, a time estimate, and level of difficulty so you know which ones to save for a Saturday morning, which ones to knock out after work on Tuesday, and which to add to your Sunday reset. Your home will thank you.

Deep Clean Your Most-Used Appliances

Image via Ello/Unsplash

Whether it’s your fridge, microwave, washing machine, toaster, or coffee machine — now is the perfect time to give your household appliances a good scrub with some cleaning tips. A deep clean keeps them working in tip-top shape and can keep you healthy. Over time, grease, grime, and food particles can accumulate, affecting just how well your machines work or how clean their output becomes.

How Long Should It Take: Approximately 1-2 hours, depending on the number and type of appliances.

Level of Difficulty: Moderate

How To: Each appliance will have its own cleaning requirements, but here's a general overview.

  1. Declutter or remove everything from inside the appliance. That could mean taking everything off the shelves of the fridge, or disposing of your coffee maker's filter and grounds. This is an excellent time to dispose of expired foods or takeout you’re never going to eat.
  2. Take out any removable parts and soak them in warm, soapy water. Dish soap and warm water in your sink work well.
  3. Wipe down surfaces with a suitable cleaning solution. I like vinegar and baking soda because it gets rid of odors and the chemical reaction can actually lift grime and dirt. Plus they’re both food-safe.
  4. Vacuum or wipe dust from coils, vents, filters, etc. Trust me, if you’ve never done this before — you will be horrified and never forget to do it again.
  5. Reassemble and restock.

Clear & Clean Your Gutters (& Check Your Roof While You’re Up There)

Image via Carter Baran/Unsplash

No one likes to realize their home has water damage, and regularly cleaning gutters and inspecting the roof will keep the surprises to a minimum. Leaves, debris, and even pests can accumulate in gutters, leading to clogs and water overflow that can damage your home's roof and foundation. Make sure you’ve cleared those gutters to keep rainwater flowing, especially if your home has lots of trees around it.

How Long Should It Take: 2-4 hours, depending on the size of your home

Level of Difficulty: Moderate

How To: Adjust this tip depending on if you live in a single- or multi-level home, and make sure to practice extra caution — feel free to have someone nearby keep an eye on you.

  1. Safely climb a ladder to access gutters. Have someone hold the ladder for you and make sure to wear shoes with a good tred and ankle support.
  2. Remove debris by hand or with a gutter scoop (make sure to wear safety gloves!). You’ll most likely find wet leaf clumps. Leaves fall into the gutters and when it rains, they stick together, clogging up your home’s way of redirecting water. You can use a leaf blower to lift some of the gunk too.
  3. Once the big pieces are out, flush out remaining dirt. Then, run a hose down the gutters to check for leaks. Take note of where the water funnels out and make sure it’s away from the house, ideally downhill towards your street’s gutters or another water source.
  4. Inspect the roof for damaged shingles or potential issues. Carefully walk the roof and feel for “soft spots,” where sitting water may have soaked into the roof, compromising the structural integrity. Cracks, punctures, or corrosion are common, but fixable.
  5. Make the necessary repairs or consult a professional for assistance. Many fixes can be done by simply visiting your local hardware store. But for any extensive damage, be sure to call your home insurance company first, and then a recommended professional.

Protect Your Home From Pests

Image via Oxana Doroshkevich/Unsplash

As the weather starts warming up, you may notice a few unwanted guests. Spring is a time when pests become more active, so don’t skip your pest maintenance or you’ll spend summer swatting away mosquitoes! Preventing infestations early on helps protect your home from potential damage and can make outdoor relaxation much more enjoyable.

How Long Should It Take: 1-2 hours, depending on the size of your home

Level of Difficulty: Easy to Moderate

How To:

  1. Seal cracks and crevices to prevent entry points. The first line of protection is prevention. Bugs come in through windows, doors, crawlspaces, porches, and more. Do a quick walkabout to ID any potential entry points and close them off.
  2. Remove standing water. Mosquitos love a resort-style pool so make sure your yard and surrounding areas are draining properly. Don’t let planters, wheelbarrows, chairs, or buckets fill with water. Turn them upside down to avoid creating bugs’ ideal vacation spot.
  3. Trim vegetation and keep a distance between plants and your home. Plants bring bugs and while they’re not all bad, if they’re too close to your house, they may try to break in. Keep everything manicure to avoid a breeding ground for bugs of any kind.
  4. Use natural repellents or consult with a pest control professional. Many pest control companies will come quarterly or monthly to spray and keep pests at bay. If you prefer to do it yourself, there are plenty of at-home kits or natural ways to deter bugs, like repellent plants or essential oils. Bugs are deterred by lavender, basil, peppermint, citronella, mint, and rosemary. Other solutions include neem oil, dryer sheets, vinegar, and Diatomaceous earth.
  5. Regularly inspect and clean areas prone to pests, such as basements and attics. Be vigilant, and stay on top of those suckers!

Declutter Closets/Donate:

Image via Priscilla Du Preez/Unsplash

This spring cleaning checklist definitely extends to decluttering closets, creating a more organized and spacious living environment. Donating unused items not only reduces clutter but also benefits those in need. You’ll be better to make some space and your home will be easier to maintain. Looking to make some extra money? Try these sites for selling your clothes.

How Long Should It Take: 4-6 hours, depending on the size of your closet.

Level of Difficulty: Easy

How To:

  1. Remove all items from the closet. Sometimes it has to get worse before it gets better. Don’t let the chaos deter you — it’s a crucial step in the process!
  2. Sort items into keep, donate, and discard piles. Channel your inner Marie Kondo and ask “does this bring me joy?” If the answer is no — let it go. Also consider how frequently you wear or use the item. If it’s been six months or more (and the item is in season), you can probably live without it.
  3. Clean and vacuum the closet space. Say goodbye to dust bunnies and hello to a blank slate. Wipe everything down and give your clothes or other items a clean place to live.
  4. Organize remaining items by category or use. For clothing, some people like to organize by color, others by article of clothing like jeans, sweaters, and tees. Find a system that not only looks nice but will easy to maintain. If you find yourself never putting your sweaters back on their hangers, maybe find some baskets to fold and store them in instead.
  5. Donate gently-used items to local charities or organizations. Or at least take it to your car. It’s ok if it sits there for three months. You’ll get to it eventually.

Change HVAC Filter

Image via Dan LeFebvre/Unsplash

Changing the HVAC filter on your heating and air conditioning is a simple yet crucial maintenance task that enhances indoor air quality, improves system efficiency, and extends the life of your HVAC unit. While you're at it, there are plenty of filters throughout your home that need to be cleaned or replaced including your water filters, air purifiers, and laundry filters. Keep a running list of each.

How Long Should It Take: 5-10 minutes

Level of Difficulty: Easy

How To:

  1. Turn off the HVAC system. You don’t want it to be blowing air out while you’re dusting and cleaning.
  2. Locate the filter access panel. It’s usually on a wall and looks like a grate with a small door that open and closes. You may even notice dust accumulating on the outside. Go ahead and vacuum that.
  3. Pull out the old filter and place the new one in. I buy filters in bulk so I have 6-12 at a time. I replace my filter once a month and only have to purchase filters 1-2 times a year. Each unit will have specific filters or sizes. Consider buying higher end filters if you have lots of pets or live somewhere that’s dusty or sandy often.
  4. Install a new filter, ensuring it's positioned correctly. It should slide right in, filling the existing hole in your system.
  5. Turn the HVAC system back on and keep an eye on it.

Other Home Maintenance Tasks To Add To Your Spring Cleaning Checklist

Image via Volha Flaxeco/Unsplash

  • Check your windows and doors, and their weatherstripping, to ensure a proper seal and prevent drafts.
  • If you’ve been using your fireplace all winter, give it a good clean before closing it up for the season.
  • Fluctuating temperatures can be hard on your pipes. Inspect them for leaks or corrosion.
  • Prepare your outdoor living space for epic get-togethers. Wipe down patio furniture and clean your grill.

John Snow was really on to something when he said, "Winter is coming" — especially when it comes to winter hair colors! I can talk about cute haircuts and hairstyles all day, but what I'm even more interested in are hair colors right now. This time last year, I started playing around with caramel and chocolate balayage to see how I liked it, but I didn't expect to fall in love with those shades! They seemed to add a cozy warm glow to my face that coincided with the season, and I've yet to look back!

Still, I haven't decided if I'm ready to take the plunge to dye my natural hair because I'm not sure if I want to cut it or not. Since that's another story, I decided to do what I do best when I have burning hair questions — talk to celebrity hairstylists!

As luck would have it, I talked to three experts who have a stellar clientele and knowledge about receiving a color service:

Similar to fall, Edson Ibarra says winter is about "embracing warmth and depth." He feels like "chestnut brown, caramel balayage, and copper hues" are going to "play beautifully" with the winter sun. "Subtle reds like auburn and soft cinnamon are also making a strong comeback, adding a little spice to classic looks," he adds.

The Best Trending Winter Hair Colors For 2024-2025

1. Chestnut Brown

Filipa Matos

This rich brown color is always going to be a staple no matter which season we're in. Kim Kimble feels like this is the time where colors like this will "complement the season's cozy feel." She personally feels the shade "Bold & Bright 40 Brown Sugar [by Clairol]" is "a soft, natural brown that will "bring incredible warmth to any look."

Whether you're getting a silk press or new hair color, a consultation is often recommended by stylists. Keith Shore says the reason is that "the consultation is a vital part of the color service." This gives him the chance to "assess the current condition of the hair" instead of diving straight into the process. Kimble also says, "The stylist will ask what you are looking for and if you have any color in your hair already or if it's virgin, etc. They may also do a patch or strand test to check how the hair will react to color being applied.

Once it's determined that your hair is healthy enough for the service, an appointment is usually scheduled for the big day! There are things you need to avoid doing, however. Kimble says the worst things clients can do is "irritate their scalp, scratch it aggressively, or apply really hard manipulation to it" before their color service. Keep this in mind if you're interested in trying one of the popular winter hair colors!

2. Teddy Bear Brown

Instagram/MarkMena

Kimble also swears by Clairol's Teddy Bear Brown for a a softer shade if you're afraid of going too dark. Once your color service appointment is complete, it's important to maintain your new style.

Maintaining your hair's health after receiving a color service is crucial because of the process it often goes through. Shore says, "My essential maintenance tip is hydration, which is crucial after a color treatment. I love It’s a 10 Leave-In Conditioner; it sprays in easily, prepares the hair for styling, and is perfect for clients short on time. I also recommend K18 for blondes wanting to maintain their brightness."

Kimble and Ibarra both recommend that you use sulfate-free shampoos. "You want to reach for very light, mild hydrating shampoos and conditioners. Those are important to maintain the hair color. Also, a great conditioning mask as well," says Kimble." She doesn't want you to use alcohol-based products though.

Ibarra personally recommends that you use "leave-in conditioners with UV protection to guard against sun damage, which can dull the color." He doesn't want you to skip deep-conditioning "once a week" because it "keeps the hair hydrated and shiny." And if you have a "cool-toned" color in your hair? Ibarra says, "I suggest a purple shampoo to maintain brightness and neutralize brassiness."

P.S. Kimble suggests scheduling an appointment every 2-3 months to help maintain your hair's health and color!

3. Caramel Balayage

Jasmine Williams

If you're thinking about getting a color service but are afraid to take the leap, Shore and Ibarra have the best words of encouragement for you! One thing they all agree on is taking baby steps. Shore says, "The best advice I can offer is to start small — consider adding pops of color with balayage or lowlights. This is a great way to test the waters without making a drastic change to your look."

Caramel balayage is always my go-to shade when I want a little change during this time because it's captures the essence of fall and winter beautifully. It also seems to add an extra glow because of how the the balayage is layered.

"I often suggest a gloss treatment or subtle highlights as a way to ease into change — it adds dimension without being too drastic. You can also try Overtones Color Depositing Treatment Masks or clip-in extensions to experiment with different shades," suggests Ibarra. Mainly, he doesn't want you to overthink it. "The most important thing is to have fun with it! Hair color isn’t permanent, and it’s such a great way to express yourself and explore new sides of your style."

4. Cashmere Blonde

Theo Wargo/Getty Images

What about blonde you ask? It's not impossible! "Interestingly enough, there are some blonde tones that work well on brown skin as well but it depends on which tone of blonde. I recommend tones that are warmer and not too brassy. Think neutral tones," Kimble expounds.

You can also try the blonde hair color Gigi wore during Victoria's Secret Fashion Show. Shore, "This time we went with a cashmere blonde for Gigi Hadid, which combines lowlights and glosses with strategically placed pops of color to enhance and highlight her natural tones," he says.

Based on his experience, he's noticed a trend among the other VS models. He says, "Alongside cashmere blonde, I’m noticing a shift towards more natural, tone-on-tone colors across all shades. Many of the Victoria’s Secret models are opting for less contrasting, more muted yet dimensional colors."

5. Gorgeous Copper

Kaylee Blackman

Celebrity hairstylist David Stanwell has managed to capture copper hair in all of its glory. Like Ibarra said earlier, this is one of those winter hair colors that the sun will love bouncing off of.

Both Ibarra and Kimble like to take a collaborative approach when servicing clients which makes appointments more enjoyable IMO. "It’s really a co-creation process. I start by understanding the client’s lifestyle, personality, and desired maintenance level — because hair color should enhance their life, not complicate it," says Ibarra.

Kimble says something similar in that she feels "choosing the right shade is all about enhancing natural beauty." She takes into consideration a client's skin tone and eye color to help figure out the perfect color that will "bring out those unique features." Without hesitating, she gave the perfect illustration. "For example, a subtle honey blonde like Nice 'n' Easy 8G Medium Golden Blonde can really brighten up warmer skin tones!"

Ibarra has a similar process in that he likes to look at clients' "skin undertones and natural hair color to identify shades that complement them." He also says, "I always encourage clients to bring inspiration photos, which helps us align on a vision. My goal is to help them leave feeling confident and like the best version of themselves."

6. Black

Dominique Goncalves

Like red lipstick or an acne-friendly foundation, winter hair colors aren't going to look the same on everyone. This is especially true if you have brown skin. Kimble says, "Black, chocolate browns, wine tone colors in the burgundy family and auburn all look great on brown skin."

IMO, you can never go wrong with this color because it looks amazing on everyone. Look at how well it complements Keke Palmer's gorgeous brown skin!

7. Silver Tones

Haley Sprankle

Kimble says that you can always try silver if you're not afraid and even offered shed light on the different dye processes that can used to achieve it. "Non-permanent is temporary because you wash it and it fades quicker. However, semi-permanent has a little bit of peroxide in it so delivers a deeper color deposit," she says. But, there's something you should know about semi-permanent. Kimble says "You can only deposit color" with it, but "you cannot lift."

If you want something that has an even lower chance of fading, you'll want to consider a permanent color. Kimble says, "...the color stays — reds and blondes fade, but they won't come off — and you can lift with them."

"I love the simplicity of this look because it takes less than 10 minutes to complete. I prepped my skin with e.l.f. Cosmetics' Power Grip Primer before applying Haus Labs Triclone Skin Tech Medium Coverage Foundation and Sephora's Best Skin Ever Concealer, a touch of One/Size Ultimate Blurring Setting Powder, and Ami Colé's Hydrating Lip Oil Treatment in the shade Romance (cranberry color)! IMO, the subtle pop of lip color is great for someone who doesn't want to overdo it on Christmas." — Jasmine Williams, Brit + Co's Writer.

2. Icy Blue Eye Makeup

Chloe Williams

"When I want to try something different than my classic gold lid, I love breaking out an ice blue or periwinkle shadow. ColourPop is my favorite brand to get eyeshadows from just because of how pigmented they are, and I went crazy with this LAV_ISH palette. More is more in this case, y'all! I layered Mood Boost, Escapism, Serenity, and Virtual Love all together until it was just right. I've also found that skipping eyeliner for this look helps it feel a little more carefree instead of polished, which is always fun." — Chloe Williams, Brit + Co's Entertainment Editor

3.Sunset Eyeshadow

Kenilev Terku

While it's easy for bronze looks to sway into the skin-like neutral territory, this cute Christmas makeup idea is more festive. The difference has everything to do with adding brown, gold, or even pink shimmer towards the inner corner and middle of your eyelids.

Our recommendations: Milani Gilded Mini Eyeshadow Palette or Urban Decay Naked Mini Eyeshadow Palette

4. Glittery Purple Eyeshadow

Chloe Williams

Go big or go home with a Christmas makeup look that's as bold as your holiday decor. It doesn't hold anything back with its glittery purple eyeshadow and crimson lipstick! It's going to show up in all your pictures without an issue. As an added bonus, let your nails match your eyeshadow! We have plenty of Christmas naildesigns that'll help you narrow down the right polish or press-on nails to go with this.

Our recommendation: Revolution Beauty Forever Flawless Eyeshadow Palette

5. Pink Shimmery Eyeshadow

Chloe Williams

"I love the femininity of the sugar plum fairy, which makes this all-pink look one of my favorites! I've been loving the glowy look of the L'oreal true match nude serum foundation along with peachy blush. For the eye, I use the Too Faced Chocolate Bar Palette I got in high school along with the Rare Beauty All of the Above Weightless Eyeshadow Stick in Well-being. And to finish off the look, I don't go anywhere without my L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Lipstick in Sugar Plum (fitting!). This is my third tube and it's literally like my lips but better." — Chloe Williams, Brit + Co's Entertainment Editor

6. White Gold Shimmery Eyeshadow + Nude Lip Combo

Jasmine Williams

"This is probably my favorite Christmas makeup look I've worn because I decided to be adventurous with my eyes by adding white gold glitter to them. I didn't want to go overboard so I kept it light by using the shade * from Too Faced's * palette. For my lips, I used Maybelline's SuperStay Matte Lipstick in the shade Seductress and their Lifter Lipgloss in Stone on my lips. It's a great look for anyone who plans to wear statement outfits on Christmas!" — Jasmine Williams, Brit + Co's Writer

7. Sugar Plum Ice Princess

Kayla Walden

As much as we love intricate designs and makeup looks, we know the best ones don't involve a lot of things. Kayla Walden, one of Brit + Co's Staff Writers and in-house Content Creator, knows how to create stunning looks that only involve a few products. All she did was add a sparkly white eyeshadow all over her eyelids while lining her bottom waterline with a white eyeliner.
