These Store-Bought Foods ACTUALLY Taste Better Than Homemade

Let’s be real: 99 percent of the time, homemade food is *significantly* better than the store-bought version. But there are exceptions to every rule, and Epicurious has outlined eight foods that tend to be — well, better — when bought from the store. In these eight scenarios, consider leaving it to the pros.

Crackers

Look, we’re not saying you shouldn’t attempt to make some homemade crackers, but it’s *really* difficult to get them as crispy as the store-bought versions.

Chips

Kale chips and other healthy alternatives are one thing, but if you really want the taste of a potatoey, crunchy, indulgent chip, you might as well head to the grocery store.

Ketchup

Ketchup is one of those processed foods that we KNOW isn’t 100 percent natural, and we’re okay with that. Most ketchup brands use high-fructose corn syrup in their product, and while it isn’t the healthiest ingredient, it lends itself well to the consistency.

Ice Cream Sandwiches

This one speaks for itself. Have YOU ever tried making two cookie wafers from scratch to hold an ice cream filling?

Marshmallows

We actually *love* homemade marshmallows, but its no secret that getting them into the perfect shape is a major challenge. If you’re not picky about shape, go for it — but if you want the perfect round marshmallow for your hot cocoa, you may as well buy your ‘mallows in the store.

Puff Pastry

Puff pastry tastes so good *because* of its unique flavor and texture. There’s a reason we all crave it, and as they say — if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Pizza Dough

We might not 100 percent agree about this choice — homemade pizza dough is pretty much the best — but we *can* agree that it’s uber finicky to make.

A Fresh paint color can be the dramatic upgrade you need to fall in love with your kitchen again. Four years ago, I painted my kitchen cabinets with Benjamin Moore's Adriatic Sea, and while I still like the color I'm ready to go more earthy in my aesthetic. "The biggest trend we’re seeing for kitchens and kitchen cabinets is homeowners looking to add more color and turn away from all-white kitchens and gray kitchens/kitchen cabinets," says Sue Wadden, Sherwin-Williams Director of Color Marketing.

Thinking beyond white these days, many designers are finding unique ways to pair color with stone and natural woods. "Lately, I’ve been captivated by the power of contrasting materials and colors to transform this essential room," says Amr Samaha, founder of LA-based Samaha Studio. "In our latest project, we’ve paired the timeless elegance of French white oak cabinets with a striking maroon paint." Here's a peek at Amr's design and several other designer picks for the best kitchen cabinet colors this year.

Samaha Studio

Amr's bold choice of a maroon hue adds warmth and depth, creating a kitchen that is both sophisticated and inviting. Try Farrow & Ball Preference Red No.297, Benjamin Moore Classic Burgundy, or Clare Paint Vintage to get the look. Always test a sample to make sure the color suits your specific lighting situation.

"The maroon hue does more than complement the natural wood — it elevates the entire space, turning it into a focal point that’s as visually stunning as it is functional. By embracing contrast, we’ve crafted a kitchen that not only looks beautiful but also feels like home," he says.

Sherwin Williams

"I love Sherwin Williams Dark Knight," Lauren Reyes says, principal designer + owner LA-based LVR Studios. "We’ve used this for my own kitchen’s cabinetry – it’s not a typical navy blue like we’re used to seeing as it has rich hues of dark blues and greens."

Farrow & Ball

Another favorite is Farrow & Ball’s Joa White, a light and clean taupe. "It's a nice way to achieve a “white” kitchen, but a lot warmer and very sophisticated feeling," Lauren says.

Sherwin Williams

Sue recommends Sherwin Williams'Thunderous SW 6201 for an earthy nature-inspired look. I think this is my pick too! "Dark yet calming, it is ideal for this space since it complements natural elements like wood and metal very well," she says.

Sherwin Williams

Sue is also a fan of the wine-colored trend. She recommends Carnelian SW 7580. "To add some drama and mystery into a kitchen, this deep saturated violet with warm red undertones is a beautiful choice. Although it might seem like a bolder choice, it’s easy to pair with clean neutrals, thanks to its muted tone."

Farrow & Ball

Amanda Leigh at House of Rolison seconds the redder tones for a warm and stimulating color. Her favorite? Benjamin Moore Nicholson Red. "We love coordinating a cabinet color to the vein of the slab we choose. It helps marry the materials we use without being too coordinated," she says.

Amanda's other favorite is also in the greige family, Farrow and Ball's Drop Cloth.

Whearley & Co

If you want to lean more green in your greige, Whearley & Co.'s Cooking Apple Green is a lovely neutral with a bit more tint.

Sherwin Williams

Sue adds to her fave list Sherwin Williams Color of the Year for 2024: Upward SW 6239. "This light and breezy blue that creates a beautiful coastal chic vibe to an all-white kitchen. Homeowners can take this aesthetic one step further by adding wooden accents to the space."

Theresa Butler Interiors, Marc Mauldin

Theresa Butler, principal and founder of Theresa Butler Interiors in Atlanta recently refreshed a 15-year-old kitchen with its original cabinets using Benjamin Moore Advance Paint in Marine Blue (on island) and London Fog (in cabinets).

Theresa Butler Interiors, Marc Mauldin

Theresa also used Benjamin Moore White Dove to refresh this traditional kitchen.

Benjamin Moore

Theresa also recommends Benjamin Moore Stratton Blue (a muted blue-green shown above), a soothing Ocean Air, and Peale Green, an earthy forest green, for kitchen cabinets. Love the idea of forest green too!

Lowe's

Something in the Ocean Air family is the Tranquil Waters Tintable Cabinet Paint from Magnolia Home by Joanna Gaines.

What's happening astrologically during the week of November 24 to December 1, 2024?

Sivan Weitz

Mercury goes retrograde on November 25. Do not to fear or dread these periods when Mercury is retrograde; instead, view them as a perfect opportunity to review and reevaluate your actions. Slow down, get organized, and double-check any documents before sending them out. Don’t leave things to the last minute. Pack early, and make sure you leave plenty of time if you're traveling over the holiday weekend. Flexibility and a sense of humor are essential.

On November 27, the Sun makes a beneficial trine to Mars, the planet of action. We will feel this energy all week. It should be a wonderfully optimistic time when self-confidence is high. We can be courageous and enthusiastic, so if you need to approach your superiors with a request for a raise or more responsibility, this week supports those brave actions. Be sure to exercise and move your body; dancing and playing can be especially joyful and fun. This energy is also quite attractive, so if you need extra motivation to ask someone out, you might find the courage this week to act on a crush.

Cayla Evans

Also, on November 27, Venus, the planet of love, harmony, and values, squares Chiron, the wounded healer and Shaman of the Zodiac. This challenging aspect might bring up wounds around self-worth or self-esteem. Past traumatic experiences involving relationships or finances might resurface. Balancing the Sun - Mars harmony with this challenging Venus - Chiron aspect is key. We all have the potential to heal and overcome a lack of confidence or insecurities about self-worth. We also have the opportunity to help others overcome self-consciousness or anxiety. Use the enthusiasm and optimism of Sagittarius to help one another.

There is a New Moon in Sagittarius on November 30, opposite Jupiter in Gemini. This is a perfect time to kick off the holidays, as we will find ourselves optimistic, generous, and cheerful. Be aware that Jupiter can amplify responses, leading to overindulgence, overpromising, or being overly optimistic. This is usually not a problem because everyone is feeling happy, but if you need to monitor your consumption or expenditures, pause before acting. Use Mercury retrograde as a reminder to take a breath and reevaluate any big purchases or acts of generosity. Take time to be still and plan what you’d like to accomplish this month. There is abundant energy for success if we focus and are clear about our ambitions.

I look to the sky and the planets to help navigate the world around us. If you’d like to know more about how these and other transits affect your life, please contact me for a personalized reading! SevenSistersAstrology.com

Prior to becoming a mom, I never drank coffee on a daily basis. I didn't get the hype surrounding it because eating a hearty breakfast used to give me all the energy I needed to tackle my day. If you listen closely, you can hear my mom-coded chuckle.

Though I used my Keurig here and there...I fell into the daily Starbucks habit that I haven't quit been able to shake yet. The tasty drinks felt much easier to grab and go, instead of dropping in a pod and adding creamer, hoping for that barista-made flavor. However, I finally found something that makes me feel like I'm my own at-home barista: the Ninja Espresso Machine!

What is the Ninja Espresso Machine?

Amazon

This Ninja coffee maker is a 3-in-1 machine that allows you to make espresso, classic drip coffee, and cold brews! It goes the extra mile by letting you make the following of each:

  • Espresso — double shot or quad shot
  • Drip Coffee — classic, rich, or over ice
  • Cold Brew — cold pressed expresso or cold brew coffee

Depending on your mood, you can brew anywhere from 6 to 18 oz. drinks. It's like the grandmother of coffee makers IMO — she really can do it all, and then some!

What kind of features does it have?

Jasmine Williams

What features doesn't this Ninja coffee maker have is the better question. My favorite feature so far is the weight-based dosing that helps the machine determine what you'll need for the perfect cup of coffee. What does that mean? It has a built-in scale that does the heavy lifting for you, showing you the recommended setting you need by detecting the weight of the beans before grinding.

It also has a hands-free frothing option that rivals the skills of Starbucks' baristas with its Barista Assist Technology. The four frothing features are:

  • Steamed milk
  • Thin froth
  • Thick froth
  • Cold foam

I've tried the steamed milk and cold foam options so far, and they're AMAZING. I think that's the best part of making coffee now!

Is it hard to put the Nina Espresso Maker together?

Jasmine Williams

This is probably the heaviest coffee maker I've ever had, but it doesn't bother me. I bought my fiancé a Nutri Ninja Personal & Countertop Blender last year, so I'm familiar how sturdy their products are.

However, I want to mention how heavy it is so you're not surprised when you're taking it out of the box! It took two people to slide it out in my experience, so make sure you have someone to help you. If you don't care about keeping the box the Ninja Espresso Maker comes in, you can just cut it open to make it easier for you.

Putting this machine together is simpler than it looks, though. It comes with additional pieces like the assisted tamper, a funnel (to ensure you have the right amount of ground coffee), two baskets (to determine what type of coffee you want to make: quad shot espresso, classic, cold brew, or cold-pressed), and the portafilter (AKA the longer piece which serves as the main handle when you're grinding the beans and ready to brew your coffee). Thankfully, comes with the double basket installed already.

How much counter space does it take up?

Jasmine Williams

The Ninja Espresso Machine doesn't take up as much space as I thought it would — and that's great because I live in an apartment, so that real estate is very limited in my kitchen. I was able to place it on the smaller counter by stove and still have room to place my coffee essentials next to it. But if you want to create a coffee corner, I definitely suggest placing it on a longer surface.

Do I need to use pre-ground coffee or whole beans?

Jasmine Williams

This is a great question! I usually skip the instructions when putting something together (that rushed mom life, you know?), but decided to because I didn't want to mess anything up.

It's easy to reach for pre-ground coffee, but this machine specifically requires whole beans because of the grinder feature. If you're worried about added time from the grind, don't — it really doesn't take long for the beans to be ground!

Do I have to use whole milk for the frother, or can I use something plant-based?

Jasmine Williams

You can actually use both! The cool thing about the Nina Espresso Maker is you can change the settings to whole or plant-based milk when you want to use the frothing feature! I just prefer to stick with unsweetened almond milk because it doesn't irritate my digestive system and has 0 grams of sugar in it!

Final Thoughts:

Jasmine Williams

The Ninja Espresso Maker has converted me into a coffee drinker who doesn't have to leave her house for the latest Starbucks fall drinks — or at least not all the time. 😉 The included QR code on top of the machine helped me see step-by-step installation and brewing guides, so that's a welcomed bonus that continues to make regular use so much easier.

I will say that you have to test the hardness of your water and run a pre-cycle before using the machine. A water test strip is included in the box, and this process takes a couple of minutes to do. Once you're ready to run the pre-cycle, fill the water reservoir on the side is place a 10 or 12 oz. cup under the portafilter and press brew. When the cup is full after a few minutes, dump the water in the sink and you'll be ready to brew your first cup of espresso, classic brew, latte, or ice coffee!

Ultimately, while I don't care for drinking espresso, that feature works for my Domincan fiancé — it's perfect for getting him that shot of flavor and energy some he craves in the morning. Otherwise, for all other coffee-making endeavors, I give the Ninja Expresso Maker a 5 out of 5 rating! It really has something for all coffee lovers, and it takes than less than five minutes to have a cup of cold or warm deliciousness! BRB while I brew something for my Gilmore Girls rewatch...

Mercury retrograde has arrived, and we’re in for a smidge of cosmic hiccups this holiday season! Known as the agent of chaos, this retrograde often stirs up misunderstandings and miscommunication. You might experience everything from strange vibes to falling out with friends over trivial conflicts, or even a computer crash that rivals the drama of The Family Stone, where family flaws and secrets come to light. But don’t panic — this is also a time for romantic epiphanies, much like in The Holiday, where unexpected connections bloom. I’ve got you covered with tips to navigate the last Mercury retrograde of 2024 — and for how to keep your holidays merry despite the mayhem.

Read on to understand the ins-and-outs of Mercury Retrograde — plus what it means for your horoscope right now!

What is Mercury Retrograde?

Cora Pursley

To grasp the significance of Mercury in retrograde, it’s essential to first understand what retrogrades are. As planets orbit the Sun, they follow specific paths, with some moving faster than others. Generally, the closer a planet is to the Sun, the quicker it travels. Occasionally, these planets appear to veer off their usual course; during this time, the Sun's gravitational pull brings them back into alignment, marking the onset of a retrograde period. While this phenomenon is astronomical, it resonates on a collective level, prompting reflection and introspection here on Earth.

Mercury, often referred to as the planet of communication, plays a crucial role in our thought processes, decision-making, and interactions. During its retrograde phase, which occurs multiple times each year, it's important to navigate this period with care. Here are some do’s and don’ts to keep in mind:

Do’s:

  • Reflect on past decisions and learn from previous experiences.
  • Revisit unfinished projects or ideas that require reassessment.
  • Take time for introspection and self-examination.

Don’ts:

  • Avoid making significant decisions, such as buying a home or starting major renovations. These choices may face unexpected delays and complications.
  • Steer clear of launching new projects, as they may not proceed as planned.

By being mindful during Mercury in retrograde, you can work its energy for thoughtful reflection rather than potential miscommunication and disruption. Remember, as above, so below.

Here are some common themes to expect during this period:

  1. Miscommunication in Beliefs: Discussions around ethics and worldviews may lead to misunderstandings, so clarifying intentions is crucial.
  2. Revisiting Travel Plans: If you have holiday trips or adventures in mind, be prepared for potential delays or changes. This is a good time to reassess your travel goals or revisit cherished destinations.

Aries (March 21 – April 20)

Prepare for some soul-searching between sips of eggnog and lively family chatter this holiday season. You might start to wonder if that “special holiday sweater” is really as special as you thought. Conversations could get a bit awkward, so take a deep breath and remember: that patience is key—especially when stories start to loop. Welcome any travel mishaps as unexpected adventures; they’ll turn into hilarious tales to share later!

Taurus (April 21 – May 21)

This season, it’s all about sharing—whether it’s your holiday spirit or your budget! You may need to tiptoe around sensitive topics, like who gets the last piece of the pie, so choose your words wisely. If plans get delayed, think of it as a chance to cozy up with loved ones instead of stressing out. Reflect on what matters, and don’t be afraid to indulge a little—after all, holiday treats are basically a form of self-care.

Gemini (May 22 – June 21)

Your relationships might resemble a game of charades, with everyone trying to decipher what everyone else really wants. Whether you’re flying solo or in a couple, keep an eye on those festive planning talks—they could definitely use some clarity. Use this time for personal growth, turning any communication slip-ups into lessons that brighten your celebrations and keep the fun rolling. Just remember: clarity is key, so make sure everyone’s on the same page.

Cancer (June 22 – July 22)

Prioritize your well-being and avoid the pressure of overworking yourself amidst the holiday hustle. As you juggle party prep, try not to get swept away in the festive chaos. Communication might feel like decoding a toddler’s drawing, so be clear with family and friends about what you need. Focus on self-care and balance, and you’ll navigate the whirlwind like a pro—maybe with a cozy blanket and a good movie on standby.

Leo (July 23 – August 22)

Get ready for a holiday season where your creative flair might take a few unexpected turns, like a well-rehearsed dance that suddenly goes off-script. As plans shift, practice your patience and remember what truly sparks joy for you. Reflect on those passions that make you shine, and don’t shy away from the mistakes--they often lead to the best holiday tales. Plus, a little extra glitter never hurt anyone—just try not to get it everywhere!

Virgo (August 23 – September 22)

Prepare for some family dynamics that might feel like a reality show reunion! Miscommunication could lead to some comedic misunderstandings about plans or traditions, so keep your cool. Take this time to reflect on your emotional needs and find a little order in the chaos. Strengthen those family bonds, because nothing says “holiday spirit” quite like sharing a laugh over that one family photo everyone wants to forget!

Libra (September 23 – October 22)

Expect your conversations to get a little tangled, like last year’s string lights. Short trips or outings could pop up, so embrace the unexpected adventures! Before sharing your brilliant ideas, take a moment to clarify your thoughts; nobody wants to accidentally volunteer to host the next family gathering (unless you really want to). Use these moments to deepen connections, and remember: the best holiday memories are often born from a bit of chaos.

Scorpio (October 23 – November 21)

This season, keep an eye on your spending—it’s easy to get swept up in the holiday cheer! As you tackle gift lists, take a moment to reflect on what truly matters—like the joy of giving without the post-holiday financial headache. Budgeting conversations may get tricky, so approach them with care. Mindful spending will help you enjoy a holiday filled with laughter and love, not a mountain of bills come January!

Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21)

Expect a bit of soul-searching this holiday, as you clarify your goals amidst the festive bustle. Conversations may go sideways, so take a moment to sort out your intentions before diving in. Cherish this chance for introspection and focus on what truly matters. Meaningful connections will blossom even in the chaos, turning challenges into opportunities for growth—and maybe a few good laughs along the way!

Capricorn (December 22 - January 19)

This holiday season, get ready for some introspection that might feel like unearthing old holiday memories. Past issues could bubble up, so keep your communication open to avoid any misunderstandings. Use this time to recharge and reflect on your needs. By seeing challenges as opportunities for growth, you can craft a more peaceful holiday experience—one that sets a cheerful tone for the New Year!

Aquarius (January 20 – February 19)

Friendships may take center stage, with old connections popping back up like holiday cheer. Just be ready for some communication blunders that might leave you scratching your head! Reflect on your social circles and decide who truly aligns with your vibe. Navigating these dynamics thoughtfully can lead to more meaningful connections and memorable festivities—after all, nothing beats laughter with friends over a cup of hot cocoa.

Pisces (February 20 – March 21)

This season, your career and public image might demand a bit of attention—like that one holiday decoration that always needs fixing. Communication with colleagues may hit a few snags, so be prepared for some delays. Reflect on your goals and ensure they match your true self. Staying clear and confident during festive gatherings will help you set the right tone for the year ahead—preferably one filled with good vibes and fewer awkward silences!
