Student Spotlight: Sarah Mecke On Turning Calligraphy Into A Side Hustle

We joined college student and creative business owner Sarah Mecke to talk about how making time for creativity has changed her life. As a full-time college student, Sarah could have easily made the excuse that she didn’t have time for creativity, but she committed to making the time. Sarah took our Calligraphy 101 online class two years ago, and we checked in to see how it’s going.

Watching Sarah use a calligraphy pen, you wouldn’t know that she’d just picked it up two years ago, all while being a full-time student. But sure enough, she’s managed to learn calligraphy, launch her own business AND earn a degree. In fact, she’d recently graduated when we visited her home studio in Dallas, TX. Sarah invited us over to talk about how her life has changed since taking Calligraphy 101.

The story starts midway through her college career. Sarah had always thought of herself as creative and grew up loving art. “I’d always wanted to take a Calligraphy class but in person classes are so expensive. Being a student, I didn’t really have the time or necessary funds to take a class or to spend the time and the money to go and take a class from somebody. Most classes in person are $150 or something like that.”

That’s when she discovered B+C classes, and Calligraphy 101 caught her eye.

“It was like, less than $40; it was amazing.”

Before that, she’d dabbled in hand lettering and had just launched a hand-lettering business on the side.

“Having a business and being a full-time student is very hard, especially when I am in classes that are pretty rigorous. Blowing off steam is a really big deal for me, and for my mental health, I think I needed an artistic outlet.”

“My love for Calligraphy really started with hand lettering. I would browse Pinterest, and see all these beautiful pieces that people had hand lettered. Then I realized they were actually calligraphy and not hand lettering — that’s why mine wasn’t looking as good.”

With this fledgling business underway, she enrolled in Calligraphy 101 taught by Lauren Essl. It all started at a desk in her dorm room.

“The online class really drew me in because I could watch it at any time that I wanted. I could play it back, I could pause it and I could really use my own time how I wanted. I would pause it and play it back, like four or five times for each little section. I just practiced every day. At first, it was kind of hard, but it became a lot easier.”

“I was able to incorporate my new calligraphy skill into my business and make prettier, more refined and better items for people.

Watching the letters flow from her hands, you’d think that it came naturally from the start. But her relationship with calligraphy hasn’t always been as graceful.

The first time she tried, it was a kit she bought at a craft store.

“I was absolutely terrible,” she laughs. “I think I scratched through my paper. I left a huge hole in the middle of my paper because I didn’t know how to use the pen. It was kind of a disaster.”

Sarah recently designed river rock stone name cards, invitations and a map of a client’s Nicaraguan wedding.

“I became overwhelmed once when I was taking a class, and that was [because] it was just so much information. But I was able to pause it, calm myself down, play it back again, and that absolutely fixes the problem. The first time I would get just the bits and pieces of watching the film, and then after the third or fourth time, I was actually getting the nuances, and I would seeing how she was holding the pen. I was seeing how Lauren was dipping the ink. You really pick up on the technique when you are able to watch it over and over again. I feel, in an in-person class, that you are not able to replay in your mind over and over. I don’t think you pick up as much.”

She’s come a long way since. What she’s most proud is how she’s developed her own unique style.

She’s graduated now, and the dorm room isn’t the only thing she’s outgrown. “Since [starting out], I have expanded a little bit, and so I use a different ink and I still use the same pen, which, I’m obsessed with that pen. I’ve definitely bought more nibs because it only came with one. I have like, a hundred now.”

Sarah went on to take upwards of 15 more B+C classes since then, including Calligraphy 201 (also taught by Lauren Essl). It was during that class that it really occurred to her what she was capable of with calligraphy skills.

“Lauren was able to teach us about more useful uses for calligraphy: addressing envelopes, making our own prints. She helped us take what we had made, put it into Illustrator and make it into a vector image so we can use it on anything that we want. From then, I was able to create my own logo. I kind of branched off into making anything that I want.”

Her calligraphy skills gave her business a new focus, taking it from a side hustle to a personal brand. Business is picking up, and she built her own website earlier this year. On it, you can find her line of paper goods, phone cases, clothing and mugs, all featuring her calligraphy and design work. That’s something that Sarah says she would never have thought she would be able to do.

But calligraphy is more than a business to Sarah.

“I love having a little side hustle that calms me down when I’ve had a rough day, or I have too much going on. That’s where I find my joy and that’s where I find my relaxation and I just love having that.”

Being creative is, to me, waking up with a fire to get something done, and being passionate all day long about what you are doing, even going to bed thinking about what your next project is going to be.

We closed our conversation with Sarah by asking how B+C has helped with her creativity.

“Brit + Co has helped mold me into the type of artist and the type of creative person that I want to be. I have always wanted to have certain skills that I thought I would never be able to have. I never knew that I would be able to learn Illustrator or Lightroom, and now I have been able to take what I have learned in the Brit + Co classes, and apply them to my business and make it so much more beautiful than I ever thought possible.”

And for those who believe they’re not creative, here’s what Sarah has to say about that:

“To people who feel that they are not creative, I would say, I don’t think that that’s the case. Everyone has creativity in them and it doesn’t matter if you are an amazing artist or you are a great photographer. You could be a great baker. That’s creativity. You could be really great at math, that’s creativity. You’re amazing at problem solving. You can do absolutely anything because everyone has a creative capacity.”

In our Take 5 series, sponsored by Verizon, we ask women in business about unexpected challenges, their inspirations, recent wins, and how the free Verizon Small Business Digital Ready Program has helped propel their business forward. Here, we meet Rita Suzanne, a marketing strategist for health and wellness businesses who learned to network, connect with other entrepreneurs, and build her business online and IRL.

What's an unexpected business challenge that you've had to face and how did you overcome it?

The hardest thing for me was my sister passed away and I ended up taking custody of my nieces. I ended up being a single mom of four kids. This is the thing that transitioned my whole entire life. I stopped doing web design and started my podcast Mom Owned and Operated. I wanted to reconnect with other moms and figure out how they were able to run their businesses and raise a family and take care of themselves because I wasn't able to do all three at the same time. Through that journey, I realized that I really needed to connect with other people and how important it was for my business. It helped me to create that community that I was yearning for that I didn't realize that I needed.

What's a recent small win for your business?

For me, the win was just pivoting back to something that I actually wanted to do. Also, I’ve started to say no to things that I no longer want to do.

Who is a woman in business that you look up to and why?

I have always admired and looked up to Amy Porterfield [author of Two Weeks Notice]. I listened to her all the time when I was starting out. I think that she's amazing and I love her stuff. She just seems like a very genuine person.

Is there a resource that has made an impact on you as an entrepreneur?

I listen to a lot of audio books. One of my favorites that has been huge for me is You Are A Badass by Jen Sincero. I was told when I first started my business, by a friend who was a business coach, that I have a mindset problem. Ten years ago, I had no idea even what “mindset” was. Sincero’s book helped me to see what she meant by “mindset” and helped me adjust that mindset and fix some of the things that I didn't realize were broken.

How has the Verizon Small Business Digital Ready Program helped propel your business forward?

There are a lot of things that I have loved about it. There are local networking and training opportunities, and that has been great, and the online training is very valuable. It's a great resource. I find that marketing needs a three-tiered approach, meaning you need to network it locally, socially, and then also have a very comprehensive online approach to your marketing. One of the Verizon Small Business trainings that I took was all about taking advantage of your local resources. I found that to be extremely valuable because often people think they need to just focus on social media. I don't think that people focus enough on their local community.

In our Take 5 series, sponsored by Verizon, we ask women in business about unexpected challenges, their inspirations, recent wins, and how the free Verizon Small Business Digital Ready Program has helped propel their business forward. Here, we meet La Wuandia, singer, songwriter, and promoter behind the Chicago-based global entertainment company Agape Vibes.

La Wuandia of Agape Vibes

What's the most unexpected business challenge you've faced and how did you overcome it?

When I began in the late ‘90s, it was not a surprise that financial institutions would not lend to unconventional or non-traditional businesses like a performance company and even further to a person of color, and even to a female person of color. That was one of the initial road bumps. Then, when the pandemic hit, I had to figure out how to still perform for profit. The audio isn’t great on Zoom, so I started reaching out to other groups and we started performing outdoors, and traveling around the country. They were practically giving hotel rooms away!

What’s a recent small win for you and your business?

Staying Alive. Staying Alive. [laughs] During the pandemic, so many doors closed. But I was able to support my band members who did not have nine-to-fives to fall back on. Now, whenever I do have a performance, if they have something booked, they'll find a sub for that book and come and perform with me. You got to love that integrity.

Who is a woman in business that you look up to and why?

I had the opportunity to meet [a late Supreme Court Justice]. I was a flight attendant, and when she was leaving the plane, she told me she had never experienced a flight with my service ever before. Of course, I was floating. For someone of that caliber to stop and actually recognize and acknowledge my services is truly amazing. I love her story, how she was able to balance work and life and family, then to be able to go as far as the Supreme Court. That was amazing to me.

What's a book, podcast, or resource that has made an impact on you as an entrepreneur?

I love motivational speaker Jim Rohn’s practical applications and how he helps an individual to recognize that a lot of what we are hoping to obtain is already within us, it's a matter of focus. It's a matter of keeping our thought processes positive and moving forward. And also to keep our circle with positive like-minded individuals.

How has the free Verizon Small Business program helped propel your business forward?

The one beautiful thing that I love that Verizon did was to analyze my website [via 1:1 coaching]. I started to learn how my website was being utilized in terms of the traffic and how I can make better use of it. Their digital platform also offered peer networking, peer coaching, mentoring, and it was not a long drawn-out type of programming or training. It was to the point, and then offered a way to get more information. Finally, what I learned from the Verizon program is how to pay myself and how to assess my worth. I was paying myself whatever was leftover, but I realized that was wrong. I needed to give myself a salary.

Jurassic World: Rebirth is hitting theaters this summer and I cannot stop thinking about how good Jonathan Bailey looks. The Bridgerton actor stars as paleontologist Dr. Henry Loomis alongside Scarlett Johansson's Zora and Mahershala Ali's Duncan Kincaid. Together, the team is tasked with getting DNA samples after the world has become inhospitable to dinosaurs. But, naturally, all the internet can talk about is Jonathan Bailey. (Relatable).

Here's your first look at Jonathan Bailey in Jurassic World: Rebirth.

Jonathan Bailey and Scarlett Johansson team up for a brand new mission.

In the latest image, Scarlett Johansson looks on while Jonathan Bailey examines what looks like an egg from a giant nest. And considering these two are finding DNA samples from three giant land, sea, and air creatures, it's safe to assume a dinosaur isn't far off.

While revealing the image on The Today Show, Scarlett couldn't help but gush over her costar. "How cute is Jonathan Bailey? He's the best person, he's a dreamboat," she says. "Does he love you too? He has those kind of eyes...He's the best!"

Jasin Boland/Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment

I already know that ScarJo and Jonny Bailey are going to make the ultimate team. But social media's favorite part of this whole movie is Jonathan's glasses.

"I can’t believe we’re getting a Jurassic Park movie with Jonathan Bailey in slutty glasses," one X user said. "The T Rex doesn’t stand a chance."

Oh what I wouldn't give to have Jonathan Bailey gaze into my eyes while working to save the world.

Jasin Boland/Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment

And nobody is going to kick butt like Mahershala Ali. I'd trust this man with my life.

Are you excited to see Jonathan Bailey and Scarlet Johansson in Jurassic World: Rebirth? The movie hits theaters July 2, and you can check out The 13 Most-Anticipated New Movies Coming In 2025 for more.
