When committing to a small-space lifestyle, you make conscious choices about what you bring into your home and, more importantly, your life. It’s all about curation (and plenty of purging). For the next stop on our Tiny Spaces series tour, we’re heading to a minimalist 675-square-foot family home in Brooklyn, New York that is both beautifully curated and uber functional. After one look into Jacqueline’s apartment, you’ll be ready to simplify everything and jump on that Murphy Bed trend. Check out Jacqueline’s unique and stylish space-saving tips below, watch the video tour and tune in next Tuesday for a modern Airstream makeover you won’t want to miss.
1. Round Furniture and Open Ambience:Round furniture is your best friend when it comes to small spaces because it takes up less volume and feels a whole lot smaller. Another way to help open up your space is by using neutral hues, light wood and plenty of mirrors. This creates a softer, brighter and more open space. Jacqueline’s giant mirror does just that. It’s the oldest trick in the book and boy does it work!
2. Transforming Furniture:Jacqueline has transforming furniture in both bedrooms. Adding hidden furniture, like a Murphy bed, allows for versatility in your space and really opens up the possibilities. Looking for a home yoga studio or extra play space for the kiddos? Then this is the small-space hack for you. Plus, it gives you more room for your kids as they grow. Score!
3. Open Shelving FTW:This may not seem like a huge space saver, but it is. Open shelving is going to make you think about the objects you buy. Focal shelving like this will make you shop based more on what you need vs. what you want. Not to mention, it also gives the appearance of a more curated home.
4. Plenty of Canvas Storage Bins: Canvas storage bins are storage bags that are flexible, can move in any direction and can be folded to lay flat. We love this space saver so much that we made a DIY version of our own! You can use this piece as a catch-all near your entryway or in your kid’s room. Stash blankets, toys, dog leashes and more. Even if it’s empty, it doesn’t look out of place.
5. A Touch of Greenery: Adding plants to your living space brings the outside in, which can make your home feel bigger and more natural. They can also make your home feel airier because they produce more oxygen. Not enough room for an indoor garden? Jacqueline’s window gardens are space-saving and gorgeous.
6. Wall Sconces: When you want to save floor space, there’s no better way to make it happen than by adding a wall sconce lighting fixture. This prevents you from taking up more floor space and looks super modern. Use it in your living room, bedroom, office, etc.
